Cut generation and lifting are key components for the performance of state-of-the-art mathematical programming solvers. This work proposes a new general cut-and-lift procedure that exploits the combinatorial structure of 0-1 problems via a binary decision diagram (BDD) encoding of their constraints. We present a general framework that can be applied to a wide range of binary optimization problems and show its applicability for second-order conic inequalities. We identify conditions for which our lifted inequalities are facet-defining and derive a new BDD-based cut generation linear program. Such a model serves as a basis for a max-flow combinatorial algorithm over the BDD that can be applied to derive valid cuts more efficiently. Our numerical results show encouraging performance when incorporated into a state-of-the-art mathematical programming solver, significantly reducing the root node gap, increasing the number of problems solved, and reducing the run-time by a factor of three on average.
We study how the lift-and-project procedure applies to the multiparametric analysis of conic linear optimization (CLO) problems. We first introduce the concept of a pair of primal and dual conic representable sets and define the set-valued mappings between them. We then explore a novel kind of duality of mpCLOs, which allows us to generalize as well as treat previous results for the mulitparametric analysis in a unified framework. In particular, we discuss the behavior of the optimal partition of a conic representable set. This leads to the invariant region decomposition of a conic representab…
This paper studies disjunctive cutting planes in Mixed-Integer Conic Programming. Building on conic duality, we formulate a cut-generating conic program for separating disjunctive cuts, and investigate the impact of the normalization condition on its resolution. In particular, we show that a careful selection of normalization guarantees its solvability and conic strong duality. Then, we highlight the shortcomings of separating conic-infeasible points in an outer-approximation context, and propose conic extensions to the classical lifting and monoidal strengthening procedures. Finally, we asses…
In this paper, we study cut generating functions for conic sets. Our first main result shows that if the conic set is bounded, then cut generating functions for integer linear programs can easily be adapted to give the integer hull of the conic integer program. Then we introduce a new class of cut generating functions which are non-decreasing with respect to second-order cone. We show that, under some minor technical conditions, these functions together with integer linear programming-based functions are sufficient to yield the integer hull of intersections of conic sections in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
A mixed-integer convex (MI-convex) optimization problem is one that becomes convex when all integrality constraints are relaxed. We present a branch-and-bound LP outer approximation algorithm for an MI-convex problem transformed to MI-conic form. The polyhedral relaxations are refined with $\mathcal{K}^*$ cuts derived from conic certificates for continuous primal-dual conic subproblems. Under the assumption that all subproblems are well-posed, the algorithm detects infeasibility or unboundedness or returns an optimal solution in finite time. Using properties of the conic certificates, we show …
In this paper we consider the use of extended formulations in LP-based algorithms for mixed integer conic quadratic programming (MICQP). Extended formulations have been used by Vielma, Ahmed and Nemhauser (2008) and Hijazi, Bonami and Ouorou (2013) to construct algorithms for MICQP that can provide a significant computational advantage. The first approach is based on an extended or lifted polyhedral relaxation of the Lorentz cone by Ben-Tal and Nemirovski (2001) that is extremely economical, but whose approximation quality cannot be iteratively improved. The second is based on a lifted polyhed…
In this paper, we present a method to determine if a lift-and-project cut for a mixed-integer linear program is irregular, in which case the cut is not equivalent to any intersection cut from the bases of the linear relaxation. This is an important question due to the intense research activity for the past decade on cuts from multiple rows of simplex tableau as well as on lift-and-project cuts from non-split disjunctions. While it is known since Balas and Perregaard (2003) that lift-and-project cuts from split disjunctions are always equivalent to intersection cuts and consequently to such mul…
We address high-dimensional zero-one random parameters in two-stage convex conic optimization problems. Such parameters typically represent failures of network elements and constitute rare, high-impact random events in several applications. Given a sparse training dataset of the parameters, we motivate and study a distributionally robust formulation of the problem using a Wasserstein ambiguity set centered at the empirical distribution. We present a simple, tractable, and conservative approximation of this problem that can be efficiently computed and iteratively improved. Our method relies on …
Balas introduced disjunctive cuts in the 1970s for mixed-integer linear programs. Several recent papers have attempted to extend this work to mixed-integer conic programs. In this paper we study the structure of the convex hull of a two-term disjunction applied to the second-order cone, and develop a methodology to derive closed-form expressions for convex inequalities describing the resulting convex hull. Our approach is based on first characterizing the structure of undominated valid linear inequalities for the disjunction and then using conic duality to derive a family of convex, possibly n…
Exponents and logarithms are fundamental components in many important applications such as logistic regression, maximum likelihood, relative entropy, and so on. Since the exponential cone can be viewed as the epigraph of perspective of the natural exponential function or the hypograph of perspective of the natural logarithm function, many mixed-integer convex programs involving exponential or logarithm functions can be recast as mixed-integer exponential conic programs (MIECPs). However, unlike mixed-integer linear programs (MILPs) and mixed-integer second-order conic programs (MISOCPs), MIECP…
Making cut generating functions (CGFs) computationally viable is a central question in modern integer programming research. One would like to find CGFs that are simultaneously good, i.e., there are good guarantees for the cutting planes they generate, and efficient, meaning that the values of the CGFs can be computed cheaply (with procedures that have some hope of being implemented in current solvers). We investigate in this paper to what extent this balance can be struck. We propose a family of CGFs which, in a sense, achieves this harmony between good and efficient. In particular, we provide…
Comparing metric measure spaces (i.e. a metric space endowed with aprobability distribution) is at the heart of many machine learning problems. The most popular distance between such metric measure spaces is theGromov-Wasserstein (GW) distance, which is the solution of a quadratic assignment problem. The GW distance is however limited to the comparison of metric measure spaces endowed with a probability distribution. To alleviate this issue, we introduce two Unbalanced Gromov-Wasserstein formulations: a distance and a more tractable upper-bounding relaxation. They both allow the comparison of m…
This paper deals with the non-convex power system state estimation (PSSE) problem, which plays a central role in the monitoring and operation of electric power networks. Given a set of noisy measurements, PSSE aims at estimating the vector of complex voltages at all buses of the network. This is a challenging task due to the inherent nonlinearity of power flows, for which existing methods lack guaranteed convergence and theoretical analysis. Motivating by these limitations, we propose a novel convexification framework for the PSSE using semidefinite programming (SDP) and second-order cone prog…
Alternating current optimal power flow (AC OPF) is one of the most fundamental optimization problems in electrical power systems. It can be formulated as a semidefinite program (SDP) with rank constraints. Solving AC OPF, that is, obtaining near optimal primal solutions as well as high quality dual bounds for this non-convex program, presents a major computational challenge to today's power industry for the real-time operation of large-scale power grids. In this paper, we propose a new technique for reformulation of the rank constraints using both principal and non-principal 2-by-2 minors of t…
This paper studies a stochastic congested location problem in the network of a service system that consists of facilities to be established in a finite number of candidate locations. Population zones allocated to each open service facility together creates a stream of demand that follows a Poisson process and may cause congestion at the facility. The service time at each facility is stochastic and depends on the service capacity and follows a general distribution that can differ for each facility. The service capacity is selected from a given (bounded or unbounded) interval. The objective of o…
