This experimental study of driven intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) in an electronic circuit lattice with saturable nonlinearity follows the theoretical work of Hadzievski and coworkers. They proposed that a saturable nonlinearity could introduce transition points where localized excitations in nonintegrable lattices would move freely. In our experiments MOS capacitors provide the saturable nonlinearity in an electric lattice. Because of the soft nonlinearity driver locked, auto-resonance stationary ILMs are observed below the bottom of a linear frequency band of the lattice. With decreasing driver frequency the width of the ILM changes in a step-wise manner as does the softening of the barrier between site-centered and bond-centered ILM locations in agreement with theoretical expectations. However, the steps show hysteresis between up and down frequency scans and such hysteresis inhibits the free motion of ILMs.
We study systematically the scattering of solitons on localized impurities in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with a saturable nonlinearity. We show that, apart from the generic scenario of the outcome of the scattering process, namely the emergence of a reflected and a transmitted soliton, other effects can occur. In particular, it is found that, in the case of an attractive impurity, a soliton trapped at the impurity can coexist with the reflected and transmitted ones. This effect, which resembles the behaviour of a quantum particle interacting with a narrow impurity, has …
We investigate the switching dynamics in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric fiber coupler composed of a saturable nonlinear material as the core. In such a saturable nonlinear medium, bistable solitons may evolve due to the balance between dispersion and saturable nonlinearity, which we extend in the context of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric coupler. Our investigations of power-controlled and phase-sensitive switching show richer soliton switching dynamics than the currently existing conventional counterparts, which may lead to ultrafast and efficient all-optical switching dynamics at very low power owi…
We consider the asymmetric transmission properties of a Discrete Nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger type dimer with a saturable nonlinear intersite coupling between the dimer sites, in addition to a cubic onsite nonlinearity and asymmetric linear onsite potentials. In contrast to previously studied cases with pure onsite nonlinearities, the transmission coefficient for stationary transmission is shown to be a multivalued function of the transmitted intensity, in regimes of low saturability and small or moderate transmitted intensity. The corresponding backward transfer map is analyzed analytically and nu…
We report a novel spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomenon and ghost states existed in the framework of the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger (FNLS) equation with focusing saturable nonlinearity and PT-symmetric potential. The continuous asymmetric soliton branch bifurcates from the fundamental symmetric one as the power exceeds some critical value. Intriguingly, the symmetry of fundamental solitons is broken into two branches of asymmetry solitons (alias ghost states) with complex conjugate propagation constants, which is solely in fractional media. Besides, the dipole (antisymmetry) and tripo…
The virial theorem and ground state energy estimate of nonlinear Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with square root and saturable nonlinearities in nonlinear optics
The dynamics and stability of continuous-wave and multi-pulse structures are studied theoretically, for a generalized model of passively mode-locked fiber laser with an arbitrary nonlinearity. The model is characterized by a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with saturable nonlinearity of a general form ($I^m/(1+ΓI)^n$), where $I$ is the field intensity, $m$ and $n$ are two positive real numbers and $Γ$ is the optical field saturation power. The analysis of fixed-point solutions of the governing equations, reveals an interesting loci of singular points in the amplitude-frequency plane consistin…
We study the amplitude dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) solitons in a fast collision described by the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a saturable nonlinearity and weak nonlinear loss. We extend the perturbative technique for calculating the collision-induced dynamics of two one-dimensional (1D) solitons to derive the theoretical expression for the collision-induced amplitude dynamics in a fast collision of two 2D solitons. Our perturbative approach is based on two major steps. The first step is the standard adiabatic perturbation for the calculations on the energy balance of pertu…
The propagation dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) ring-Airy beams is studied in the framework of the fractional Schrödinger equation, which includes saturable or cubic self-focusing or defocusing nonlinearity and Lévy index ((LI) alias for the fractionality) taking values $1\leqα\leq 2$. The model applies to light propagation in a chain of optical cavities emulating fractional diffraction. Management is included by making the diffraction and/or nonlinearity coefficients periodic functions of the propagation distance, $ζ$. The management format with the nonlinearity coefficient decaying as $1/ζ$…
Three-dimensional (3D) topological materials exhibit much richer phenomena than their lower-dimensional counterparts. Here, we propose self-localized topological states (i.e., topological solitons) in a 3D nonlinear photonic Chern insulator. Despite being in the bulk and self-localized in all 3D, the topological solitons at high-symmetry points K and K' rotate in the same direction, due to the underlying topology. Specifically, under the saturable nonlinearity the solitons are stable over a broad frequency range. Our results highlight how topology and nonlinearity interact with each other and …
Nonlinearities in lattices with topological band structures can induce topological interfaces in the bulk of structures and give rise to bulk solitons in the topological bandgaps. Here we study a photonic Chern insulator with saturable nonlinearity and show the existence of topological bulk solitons. The fundamental bulk solitons exhibit as semi-vortex solitons, where only one pseudospin component has a nonzero vorticity. The bulk solitons have equal angular momentum at different valleys. This phenomenon is a direct outcome of the topology of the linear host lattice and the angular momentum ca…
While the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice is integrable, the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which is more significant for physical applications, is not. We prove closeness of the solutions of both systems in the sense of a "continuous dependence" on their initial data in the $l^2$ and $l^{\infty}$ metrics. The most striking relevance of the analytical results is that small amplitude solutions of the Ablowitz-Ladik system persist in the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger one. It is shown that the closeness results are also valid in higher dimensional lattices as well as for generalised nonlinearit…
The Ablowitz-Ladik system, being one of the few integrable nonlinear lattices, admits a wide class of analytical solutions, ranging from exact spatially localised solitons to rational solutions in the form of the spatiotemporally localised discrete Peregrine soliton. Proving a closeness result between the solutions of the Ablowitz-Ladik and a wide class of Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger systems in a sense of a continuous dependence on their initial data, we establish that such small amplitude waveforms may be supported in the nonintegrable lattices, for significant large times. The nonintegrab…
For a one-dimensional linear lattice, earlier work has shown how to systematically construct a slowly-decaying linear potential bearing a localized eigenmode embedded in the continuous spectrum. Here, we extend this idea in two directions: The first one is in the realm of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation, where the linear operator of the Schrodinger type is considered in the presence of a Kerr focusing or defocusing nonlinearity and the embedded linear mode is continued into the nonlinear regime as a discrete solitary wave. The second case is the Klein-Gordon setting, where the pres…
