A topological graph drawn on a cylinder whose base is horizontal is \emph{angularly monotone} if every vertical line intersects every edge at most once. Let $c(n)$ denote the maximum number $c$ such that every simple angularly monotone drawing of a complete graph on $n$ vertices contains at least $c$ pairwise disjoint edges. We show that for every simple complete topological graph $G$ there exists $Δ$, $0<Δ<n$, such that $G$ contains at least $\max \{\frac nΔ, c(Δ)\}$ pairwise disjoint edges. By combining our result with a result of Tóth we obtain an alternative proof for the best known lower bound of $Ω(n^\frac 13)$ on the maximum number of pairwise disjoint edges in a simple complete topological graph proved by Suk. Our proof is based on a result of Ruiz-Vargas.
The Harary-Hill Conjecture States that the number of crossings in any drawing of the complete graph $ K_n $ in the plane is at least $Z(n):=\frac{1}{4}\left\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\right\rfloor \left\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\right\rfloor \left\lfloor \frac{n-2}{2}\right\rfloor\left\lfloor \frac{n-3}{2}\right\rfloor$. In this paper, we settle the Harary-Hill conjecture for {\em shellable drawings}. We say that a drawing $D$ of $ K_n $ is {\em $ s $-shellable} if there exist a subset $ S = \{v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_ s\}$ of the vertices and a region $R$ of $D$ with the following property: For all $1 \leq i < j \…
Given a complete simple topological graph $G$, a $k$-face generated by $G$ is the open bounded region enclosed by the edges of a non-self-intersecting $k$-cycle in $G$. Interestingly, there are complete simple topological graphs with the property that every odd face it generates contains the origin. In this paper, we show that every complete $n$-vertex simple topological graph generates at least $Ω(n^{1/3})$ pairwise disjoint 4-faces. As an immediate corollary, every complete simple topological graph on $n$ vertices drawn in the unit square generates a 4-face with area at most $O(n^{-1/3})$. F…
A plane drawing of a graph is {\em cylindrical} if there exist two concentric circles that contain all the vertices of the graph, and no edge intersects (other than at its endpoints) any of these circles. The {\em cylindrical crossing number} of a graph \(G\) is the minimum number of crossings in a cylindrical drawing of \(G\). In his influential survey on the variants of the definition of the crossing number of a graph, Schaefer lists the complexity of computing the cylindrical crossing number of a graph as an open question. In this paper we settle this by showing that this problem is NP-comp…
A monotone cylindrical graph is a topological graph drawn on an open cylinder with an infinite vertical axis satisfying the condition that every vertical line intersects every edge at most once. It is called simple if any pair of its edges have at most one point in common: an endpoint or a point at which they properly cross. We say that two edges are disjoint if they do not intersect. We show that every simple complete monotone cylindrical graph on $n$ vertices contains $Ω(n^{1-ε})$ pairwise disjoint edges for any $ε>0$. As a consequence, we show that every simple complete topological graph (d…
For a simple drawing $D$ of the complete graph $K_n$, two (plane) subdrawings are compatible if their union is plane. Let $\mathcal{T}_D$ be the set of all plane spanning trees on $D$ and $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{T}_D)$ be the compatibility graph that has a vertex for each element in $\mathcal{T}_D$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding trees are compatible. We show, on the one hand, that $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{T}_D)$ is connected if $D$ is a cylindrical, monotone, or strongly c-monotone drawing. On the other hand, we show that the subgraph of $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{T}_D)$ …
The biplanar crossing number of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of crossings over all possible drawings of the edges of $G$ in two disjoint planes. We present new bounds on the biplanar crossing number of complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs. In particular, we prove that the biplanar crossing number of complete bipartite graphs can be approximated to within a factor of $3$, improving over the best previously known approximation factor of $4.03$. For complete graphs, we provide a new approximation factor of $3.17$, improving over the best previous factor of $4.34$. We provide similar…
Schnyder woods are decompositions of simple triangulations into three edge-disjoint spanning trees crossing each other in a specific way. In this article, we define a generalization of Schnyder woods to $d$-angulations (plane graphs with faces of degree $d$) for all $d\geq 3$. A \emph{Schnyder decomposition} is a set of $d$ spanning forests crossing each other in a specific way, and such that each internal edge is part of exactly $d-2$ of the spanning forests. We show that a Schnyder decomposition exists if and only if the girth of the $d$-angulation is $d$. As in the case of Schnyder woods ($…
We study two decomposition problems in combinatorial geometry. The first part deals with the decomposition of multiple coverings of the plane. We say that a planar set is cover-decomposable if there is a constant m such that any m-fold covering of the plane with its translates is decomposable into two disjoint coverings of the whole plane. Pach conjectured that every convex set is cover-decomposable. We verify his conjecture for polygons. Moreover, if m is large enough, we prove that any m-fold covering can even be decomposed into k coverings. Then we show that the situation is exactly the opp…
A graph $G$ is a non-separating planar graph if there is a drawing $D$ of $G$ on the plane such that (1) no two edges cross each other in $D$ and (2) for any cycle $C$ in $D$, any two vertices not in $C$ are on the same side of $C$ in $D$. Non-separating planar graphs are closed under taking minors and are a subclass of planar graphs and a superclass of outerplanar graphs. In this paper, we show that a graph is a non-separating planar graph if and only if it does not contain $K_1 \cup K_4$ or $K_1 \cup K_{2,3}$ or $K_{1,1,3}$ as a minor. Furthermore, we provide a structural characterisation of…
A "clique minor" in a graph G can be thought of as a set of connected subgraphs in G that are pairwise disjoint and pairwise adjacent. The "Hadwiger number" h(G) is the maximum cardinality of a clique minor in G. This paper studies clique minors in the Cartesian product G*H. Our main result is a rough structural characterisation theorem for Cartesian products with bounded Hadwiger number. It implies that if the product of two sufficiently large graphs has bounded Hadwiger number then it is one of the following graphs: - a planar grid with a vortex of bounded width in the outerface, - a cylindr…
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, we define $\textsf{v-cover}_{H}(G)$ (resp. $\textsf{e-cover}_{H}(G)$) as the minimum number of vertices (resp. edges) whose removal from $G$ produces a graph without any minor isomorphic to ${H}$. Also $\textsf{v-pack}_{H}(G)$ (resp. $\textsf{v-pack}_{H}(G)$) is the maximum number of vertex- (resp. edge-) disjoint subgraphs of $G$ that contain a minor isomaorphic to $H$. We denote by $θ_r$ the graph with two vertices and $r$ parallel edges between them. When $H=θ_r$, the parameters $\textsf{v-cover}_{H}$, $\textsf{e-cover}_{H}$, $\textsf{v-pack}_{H}$, and $\textsf…
