We present a thermal rectification device concept based on far-field radiative exchange between two selective emitters. Rectification is achieved due to the fact that one of the selective emitters radiative properties are independent on temperature whereas the other emitter properties are strongly temperature dependent. A simple device constituted by two multilayer samples made of metallic (Au) and semiconductor (Si and HDSi) thin films is proposed. This device shows a rectification up to 70% with a temperature difference ΔT = 200 K, a rectification ratio that has never been achieved so far with radiation-based rectifiers. Further optimization would allow larger rectification values. Presented results might be useful for energy conversion devices, smart radiative coolers / insulators engineering and thermal modulators development.
Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) support propagating waves with arbitrarily large wavevectors over broad spectral ranges, and are uniquely valuable for engineering radiative thermal transport in the near field. Here, by employing a rational design approach based on the electromagnetic local density of states, we demonstrate the ability of HMMs to substantially rectify radiative heat flow. Our idea is to establish a forward-biased scenario where the two HMM-based terminals of a thermal diode feature overlapped hyperbolic bands which result in a large heat current, and suppress the reverse heat f…
We demonstrate the possibility to rectify the nanoscale radiative heat flux between two nanoparticles by coupling them with the nonreciprocal surface modes of a magneto-optical substrate in a Voigt configuration. When the non-reciprocal medium supports a surface wave in the spectral window where heat exchanges take place the rectification coefficient can reach large values opening so the way to the design of true thermal diodes.
We propose a mechanism to substantially rectify radiative heat flow by matching thin films of metal-to-insulator transition materials and polar dielectrics in the electromagnetic near field. By leveraging the distinct scaling behaviors of the local density of states with film thickness for metals and insulators, we theoretically achieve rectification ratios over 140-a 10-fold improvement over the state of the art-with nanofilms of vanadium dioxide and cubic boron nitride in the parallel-plane geometry at experimentally feasible gap sizes (~100 nm). Our rational design offers relative ease of f…
A thermal diode based on the asymmetric radiative heat transfer between nanoparticles assisted by the nonreciprocal graphene plasmons waveguides is proposed in this work. The thermal diode system consists of two particles and a drift-biased suspended graphene sheet in close proximity of them. Nonreciprocal graphene plasmons are induced by the drift currents in the graphene sheet, and then couple to the waves emitted by the particles in near-field regime. Based on the asymmetry with respect to their propagation direction of graphene plasmons, the thermal rectification between the two particles …
Rectification of heat flow via a thermal diode is not only of fundamental interest, but can also enable a range of novel applications in thermal management and energy conversion. However, despite decades of extensive research, large rectification ratios of practical importance have yet to be demonstrated. Here, we theoretically achieve giant rectification ratios (3 to almost 5 orders of magnitude) by leveraging near-field radiative thermal transport between two parallel planes. Guided by a rational design approach centering on the electromagnetic local density of states (LDOS), we employ a thi…
Similar to the diode in electronics, a thermal diode is a two-terminal device that allows heat to transfer easier in one direction (forward bias) than in the opposite direction (reverse bias). Unlike conductive and convective thermal diodes, a photonic thermal diode operates in a contactless mode and may afford a large operating temperature range. In this work, a novel near-field photonic thermal diode with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and indium antimonide (InSb) is proposed and theoretically demonstrated. The temperature dependence of the interband absorption of InSb is used to couple (or d…
Harmonic oscillator chains connecting two harmonic reservoirs at different constant temperatures cannot act as thermal diodes, irrespective of structural asymmetry. However, here we prove that perfectly harmonic junctions can rectify heat once the reservoirs (described by white Langevin noise) are placed under temperature gradients, which are asymmetric at the two sides, an effect that we term "temperature-gradient harmonic oscillator diodes". This nonlinear diode effect results from the additional constraint -- the imposed thermal gradient at the boundaries. We demonstrate the rectification b…
This mini-review addresses a bedrock problem for the advance of phononics: the building of feasible and efficient thermal diodes. We revisit investigations in classical and quantum systems. For the classical anharmonic chains of oscillators, the most used model for the study of heat conduction in insulating solids, we recall the ubiquitous occurrence of thermal rectification in graded systems, and we show that the match between graded structures and long range interactions is an efficient mechanism to increase the rectification factor. For the cases of genuine quantum models, we present the sp…
The density of states of proximitized normal nanowires interrupting superconducting rings can be tuned by the magnetic flux piercing the loop. Using these as the contacts of a single-electron transistor allows to control the energetic mirror asymmetry of the conductor, this way introducing rectification properties. In particular, we show that the system works as a diode that rectifies both charge and heat currents and whose polarity can be reversed by the magnetic field and a gate voltage. We emphasize the role of dissipation at the island. The coupling to substrate phonons enhances the effect…
We investigate the photon-mediated thermal transport between a superconducting electrode and a normal metal. When the quasiparticle contribution can be neglected, the photon-mediated channel becomes an efficient heat transport relaxation process for the superconductor at low temperatures, being larger than the intrinsic contribution due to the electron-phonon interaction. Furthermore, the superconductor-normal metal system acts as a nearly-perfect thermal diode, with a rectification factor up to $10^8$ for a realistic aluminum superconducting island. The rectification factor can be also tuned …
As one of the basic components of phononics, thermal diodes transmit heat current asymmetrically similar to electronic rectifiers and diodes in microelectronics. Heat can be conducted through them easily in one direction while being blocked in the other direction. In this work, we report an easily-fabricated mesoscale chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond thermal diode without sharp temperature change driven by the gradient grain structure of CVD diamond membranes. We build a spectral model of diamond thermal conductivity with complete phonon dispersion relation to show significant thermal re…
With the objective to understand microscopic principles governing thermal energy flow in nanojunctions, we study phononic heat transport through metal-molecule-metal junctions using classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Considering a single-molecule gold-alkanedithiol-gold junction, we first focus on aspects of method development and compare two techniques for calculating thermal conductance: (i) The Reverse Nonequilibrium MD (RNEMD) method, where heat is inputted and extracted at a constant rate from opposite metals. In this case, the thermal conductance is calculated from the nonequ…
We report temperature-dependent current-voltage (I - V - T) and output light power-voltage or current (P - V - T) or (P - I - T) characteristics of 1550 nm tunneling injection quantum dot (TI QD) laser diodes. Experimental data is accompanied by physical models that distinguish between different current flow and light emission mechanisms for different applied voltages and temperature ranges. Three exponential regimes in the I - V characteristics were identified for low bias levels where no optical radiation takes place. At the lowest bias levels, the diffusion-recombination mechanism based on …
We investigate the heat transport properties of a three-level system coupled to three thermal baths, assuming a model based on superconducting circuit implementations. The system-bath coupling is mediated by resonators which serve as frequency filters for the different qutrit transitions. Taking into account the finite quality factors of the resonators, we find thermal rectification and circulation effects not expected in configurations with perfectly-filtered couplings. Heat leakage in off-resonant transitions can be exploited to make the system work as an ideal diode where heat flows in the …
Radiative thermal diodes based on two-element structures rectify heat flows thanks to a temperature dependence of material optical properties. The heat transport asymmetry through these systems, however, remains weak without a significant change in material properties with the temperature. Here we explore the heat transport in three-element radiative systems and demonstrate that a strong asymmetry in the thermal conductance can appear because of many-body interactions, without any dependence of optical properties on the temperature. The analysis of transport in three-body systems made with pol…
In present article the radiative thermal current and radiative resistance are introduced and investigated in a system of parallel slabs. The system is placed in an environment with a constant temperature and subjected to a constant temperature gradient, which causes a radiative energy flux through the system. We have calculated the steady-state temperatures profile of the system, assuming that the material and thickness of the middle slab could be different from the other slabs. We propose the exact formulation for calculating the thermal current and thermal resistances in both linear and nonl…
Recent breakthroughs in quantum-dot circuit-quantum-electrodynamics (circuit-QED) systems are important both from a fundamental perspective and from the point of view of quantum photonic devices. However, understanding the applications of such setups as potential thermoelectric diodes and transistors has been missing. In this paper, via the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function approach, we show that cavity-coupled double quantum-dots can serve as excellent quantum thermoelectric diodes and transistors. Using an enhanced perturbation approach based on polaron-transformations, we find non-mon…
In this work, we present expressions for radiative heat transfer between pairs of spheres in a linear chain and between individual spheres and their environment. The expressions are valid for coated spheres of arbitrary size, spacing, and isotropic optical properties. The spheres may be small and closely-spaced, which violates the assumptions foundational to classical radiative transfer. We validate our results against existing formulations of radiative heat transfer, namely the thermal discrete dipole and boundary element methods. Our results have important implications for the modeling and i…

We investigate electronic thermal rectification in ferromagnetic insulator-based superconducting tunnel junctions. Ferromagnetic insulators coupled to superconductors are known to induce sizable spin splitting in the superconducting density of states, and also lead to efficient spin filtering if operated as tunnel barriers. The combination of spin splitting and spin filtering is shown to yield a substantial self-amplification of the electronic heat diode effect due to breaking of the electron-hole symmetry in the system which is added to the thermal asymmetry of the junction. Large spin splitt…
The field of thermotronics aims to develop thermal circuits that operate with temperature biases and heat currents just as how electronic circuits are based on voltages and electric currents. Here, we investigate a thermal half-wave rectifier based on a quantum two-level system (a qubit) that is driven by a periodically modulated temperature difference across it. To this end, we present a non-equilibrium Green's function technique, which we extend to the time domain to account for the time-dependent temperature in one of two thermal reservoirs connected to the qubit. We find that the qubit act…
We discuss the design of the thermal analog of logic gates in systems made of a collection of nanoparticles. We demonstrate the possibility to perform NOT, OR, NOR, AND and NAND logical operations at submicrometric scale by controlling the near-field radiative heat exchanges between their components. We also address the important point of the role played by the inherent non-additivity of radiative heat transfer in the combination of logic gates. These results pave the way to the development of compact thermal circuits for information processing and thermal management, which might also be reali…
