Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) support propagating waves with arbitrarily large wavevectors over broad spectral ranges, and are uniquely valuable for engineering radiative thermal transport in the near field. Here, by employing a rational design approach based on the electromagnetic local density of states, we demonstrate the ability of HMMs to substantially rectify radiative heat flow. Our idea is to establish a forward-biased scenario where the two HMM-based terminals of a thermal diode feature overlapped hyperbolic bands which result in a large heat current, and suppress the reverse heat flow by creating spectrally mismatched density of states as the temperature bias is flipped. As an example, we present a few high-performance thermal diodes by pairing HMMs made of polar dielectrics and metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) materials in the form of periodic nanowire arrays, and considering three representative kinds of substrates. Upon optimization, we theoretically achieve a rectification ratio of 324 at a 100 nm gap, which remains greater than 148 for larger gap sizes up to 1 um over a wide temperature range. The maximum rectification represents an almost 1000-fold increase compared to a bulk diode using the same materials, and is twice that of state-of-the-art designs. Our work highlights the potential of HMMs for rectifying radiative heat flow, and may find applications in advanced thermal management and energy conversion systems.
The total intensity of light transmitted at non-normal incidence thorough planar metamaterials can be different for forward and backward propagation. For metamaterial patterns of different symmetries we observe this effect for circularly or linearly polarized light.
We present an effective method to generate second harmonic (SH) waves using nonlinear metamaterial composed of coupled split ring resonators (CSRRs) with varactor (variable capacitance) diodes. The CSRR structure has two resonant modes: a symmetric mode that resonates at the fundamental frequency and an anti-symmetric mode that resonates at the SH frequency. Resonant fundamental waves in the symmetric mode generate resonant SH waves in the anti-symmetric mode. The double resonance contributes to effective SH radiation. In the experiment, we observe 19.6 dB enhancement in the SH radiation in co…
We design and analyze photo-metamaterials with each meta-atom containing both photodiode and light-emitting diode. Illumination of the photodiode by the light-emitting diode gives rise to an additional optical feedback within each unit cell, which strongly affects resonant properties and nonlinear response of the meta-atom. In particular, we demonstrate that symmetry breaking occurs upon a certain threshold magnitude of the incident wave intensity resulting in an abrupt emergence of second-harmonic generation, which was not originally available, as well as in the reduced third-harmonic signal.
We demonstrate a controllable electromagnetic wave reflector/absorber for different polarizations with metamaterial involving electromagnetic resonant structures coupled with diodes. Through biasing at different voltages to turn ON and OFF the diodes, we are able to switch the structure between nearly total reflection and total absorption of a particularly polarized incident wave. By arranging orthogonally orientated resonant cells, the metamaterial can react to different polarized waves by selectively biasing the corresponding diodes. Both numerical simulations and microwave measurements have…
A thermal diode transports heat mainly in one preferential direction rather than in the opposite direction. This behavior is generally due to the non-linear dependence of certain physical properties with respect to the temperature. Here we introduce a radiative thermal diode which rectifies heat transport thanks to the phase transitions of materials. Rectification coefficients greater than 70% and up to 90% are shown, even for small temperature differences. This result could have important applications in the development of futur contactless thermal circuits or in the conception of radiative c…
This work numerically investigates the radiative properties of film-coupled metamaterials made of a two-dimensional metallic concave grating on a continuous metal film separated by an ultrathin dielectric spacer. Spectrally-selective absorption is demonstrated in the visible and near-infrared regime, and underlying mechanisms are elucidated to be either localized magnetic polaritons (MPs) or surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The unique behaviors of MPs and SPPs are explained with the help of electromagnetic field distributions at respective resonance frequencies. An inductor-capacitor model i…
We propose a polarization modulation scheme of electromagnetic (EM) waves through reflection of a tunable metamaterial reflector/absorber. By constructing the metamaterial with resonant unit cells coupled by diodes, we demonstrate that the EM reflections for orthogonal polarized incident waves can be tuned independently by adjusting the bias voltages on the corresponding diodes. Owing to this feature, the reflected EM waves can be electrically controlled to a linear polarization with continuously tunable azimuth angle from 0o to 90o at the resonant frequency, or an elliptical polarization with…
In this letter, we study the near-field radiative heat transfer between two metamaterial substrates coated with silicon carbide (SiC) thin films. It is known that metamaterials can enhance the near-field heat transfer over ordinary materials due to excitation of magnetic plasmons associated with s polarization, while strong surface phonon polariton exists for SiC.By careful tuning of the optical properties of metamaterial it is possible to excite electrical and magnetic resonance for the metamaterial and surface phonon polaritons for SiC at different spectral regions, resulting in the enhanced…
We propose a mechanism to substantially rectify radiative heat flow by matching thin films of metal-to-insulator transition materials and polar dielectrics in the electromagnetic near field. By leveraging the distinct scaling behaviors of the local density of states with film thickness for metals and insulators, we theoretically achieve rectification ratios over 140-a 10-fold improvement over the state of the art-with nanofilms of vanadium dioxide and cubic boron nitride in the parallel-plane geometry at experimentally feasible gap sizes (~100 nm). Our rational design offers relative ease of f…
Rectification of heat flow via a thermal diode is not only of fundamental interest, but can also enable a range of novel applications in thermal management and energy conversion. However, despite decades of extensive research, large rectification ratios of practical importance have yet to be demonstrated. Here, we theoretically achieve giant rectification ratios (3 to almost 5 orders of magnitude) by leveraging near-field radiative thermal transport between two parallel planes. Guided by a rational design approach centering on the electromagnetic local density of states (LDOS), we employ a thi…
We present a thermal rectification device concept based on far-field radiative exchange between two selective emitters. Rectification is achieved due to the fact that one of the selective emitters radiative properties are independent on temperature whereas the other emitter properties are strongly temperature dependent. A simple device constituted by two multilayer samples made of metallic (Au) and semiconductor (Si and HDSi) thin films is proposed. This device shows a rectification up to 70% with a temperature difference ΔT = 200 K, a rectification ratio that has never been achieved so far wi…
A hyperbolic metamaterial (HM) resonator is analyzed as a nano-antenna for enhancing the radiative emission of quantum emitters in its vicinity. It has been shown that the spontaneous emission rate by an emitter near a hyperbolic metamaterial substrate is enhanced dramatically due to very large density of states. However, enhanced coupling to the free-space, which is central to applications such as solid-state lighting, has not been investigated significantly. Here, we numerically demonstrate approximately 100 times enhancement of the free-space radiative emission at 660 nm wavelength by utili…
Above-light-line surface plasmon polaritons can arise at the interface between a metal and epsilon-near-zero metamaterial. This unique feature induces unusual fast-wave non-radiative modes in a epsilon-near-zero material/metal bilayer. Excitation of this peculiar mode leads to wide-angle perfect absorption in low-loss ultrathin metamaterials. The ratio of the perfect absorption wavelength to the thickness of the epsilon-near-zero metamaterial can be as high as 10^4; the electromagnetic energy can be confined in a layer as thin as λ/10000. Unlike conventional fast-wave leaky modes, these fast-w…
We explore the near-field radiative thermal energy transfer properties of hyperbolic metamaterials. The presence of unique electromagnetic states in a broad bandwidth leads to super-planckian thermal energy transfer between metamaterials separated by a nano-gap. We consider practical phonon-polaritonic metamaterials for thermal engineering in the mid-infrared range and show that the effect exists in spite of the losses, absorption and finite unit cell size. For thermophotovoltaic energy conversion applications requiring energy transfer in the near-infrared range we introduce high temperature h…
Localized cavity resonances due to nanostructures at material surfaces can greatly enhance radiative heat transfer (RHT) between two closely placed bodies owing to stretching of cavity states in momentum space beyond light line. Based on such understanding, we numerically demonstrate the possibility of ultra-broadband super-Planckian RHT between two plates patterned with trapezoidal-shaped hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) arrays. The phenomenon is rooted not only in HMM's high effective index for creating sub-wavelength resonators, but also its extremely anisotropic isofrequency contour. The two …
Several classical analogues of electromagnetically induced transparency in metamaterials have been demonstrated. A simple two-resonator model can describe their absorption spectrum qualitatively, but fails to provide information about the scattering properties-e.g., transmission and group delay. Here we develop an alternative model that rigorously includes the coupling of the radiative resonator to the external electromagnetic fields. This radiating two-oscillator model can describe both the absorption spectrum and the scattering parameters quantitatively. The model also predicts metamaterials…
Recently, near-field radiative heat transfer enhancement across nanometer vacuum gaps has been intensively studied between two hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) due to unlimited wavevectors and high photonic density of state. In this work, we theoretically analyze the energy conversion performance of a thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cell made of In0.2Ga0.8Sb when paired with a HMM emitter composed of tungsten nanowire arrays embedded in Al2O3 host at nanometer vacuum gaps. Fluctuational electrodynamics integrated with effective medium theory and anisotropic thin-film optics is used to calculate the ne…
Coupled surface plasmon/phonon polaritons and hyperbolic modes are known to enhance radiative transport across nanometer vacuum gaps but usually require identical materials. It becomes crucial to achieve strong near-field energy transfer between dissimilar materials for applications like near-field thermophotovoltaic and thermal rectification. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate extraordinary near-field radiative transport between a nanostructured metamaterial emitter and a graphene-covered planar receiver. Strong near-field coupling with two orders of magnitude enhancement in the spect…
Engineering the photonic density of states (PDOS) using resonant microcavities or periodic dielectric media gives control over a plethora of classical and quantum phenomena associated with light. Here, we show that nanostructured metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion, possess a broad bandwidth singularity in the PDOS, an effect not present in any other photonic system, which allows remarkable control over light-matter interactions. A spectacular manifestation of this non-resonant PDOS alteration is the broadband Purcell effect, an enhancement in the spontaneous emission of a light source, w…
As an emerging electricity-free cooling technology, radiative cooling employs outer space as the heat sink. With this, a sky-facing thermal emitter is usually required. Due to the black-body radiation limit at ambient temperature, the maximum cooling power density for a single-faced radiative cooling device is ~156.9 W/m2. Here we report a double-sided radiative cooling architecture using graded nanocomposite metamaterials (GNM) designed for a vertically aligned thermal emitter. This GNM structure possesses an optical absorption of over 90% throughout the solar spectrum, and exceeds 90% reflec…
We investigate the response of terahertz metamaterials made of split-ring resonators depending on the unit cell density. It is shown that the fundamental resonance has its highest Q factor for a period of one-third the resonance wavelength. Increasing or decreasing the period from that optimal period reduces the Q factor. All observations are explained by understanding radiative coupling as the dominant loss mechanism at low densities, whereas the strong inter SRR coupling enhances non-radiative losses at high densities. Our results allow designing metamaterials with adjustable Q factors and p…
We report the broadband (~ 25 nm) enhancement of radiative decay rate of colloidal quantum dots by exploiting the hyperbolic dispersion of a one-dimensional nonmagnetic metamaterial structure.
We reveal and study the topological transition in a metamaterial formed by parallel nanowires of polaritonic material. When the dispersion transits from the elliptic (epsilon-positive) to hyperbolic (epsilon-indefinite) regime, a very specific isofrequency surface arises which implies an extraordinary Purcell factor in spite of noticeable optical losses.
Nonreciprocal transmission forms the basic operation mechanism of optical diodes and isolators and requires the tantalizing task of breaking the Lorentz reciprocity law. In this work, strong nonreciprocal transmission is demonstrated by using a compact nonlinear parity-time (PT) symmetric system based on epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials photonically doped with gain and loss defects and separated by an ultrathin air gap. The nonlinear response of this scalable configuration is triggered at relatively low optical intensities due to the strong electric field confinement in the defects. The extre…
We review the properties of hyperbolic metamaterials and show that they are promising candidates as substrates for nano-imaging, nano-sensing, fluorescence engineering and for controlling thermal emission. Hyperbolic metamaterials can support unique bulk modes, tunable surface plasmon polaritons as well as surface hyperbolic states (Dyakonov plasmons) that can be used for a variety of applications. We compare the effective medium predictions with practical realizations of hyperbolic metamaterials to show their potential for radiative decay engineering, bio-imaging, sub-surface sensing, meta-pl…
We demonstrate achieving the far-field super-resolution imaging can be realized by using a planar hyperbolic metamaterial lens (PHML), beyond the Fabry-Perot resonance condition. Although the thickness of the PHML is much larger than wavelength, the PHML not only can transmit radiative waves and evanescent waves with high transmission, but also can collect all the waves in the image region with the amplitudes of them being the same order of magnitude. We present a design for a PHML to realize the far-field super-resolution imaging, with the distance between the sources and the images 10 times …
A plasmonic "molecule" consisting of a radiative element coupled with a sub-radiant (dark) element is theoretically investigated. The plasmonic "molecule" shows close resemblance to the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an atomic system. Because of its sub-wavelength dimension, this EIT-like "molecule" can be used as building block to construct a "slow light" plasmonic metamaterial.
This paper proposes an experiment to easily detect radiative heat transfer in the microwave range. Following an idea given by Pendry more than a decade ago [1], we show that a 3D array of tungsten 2micron radius wires with a 1 cm period makes a low cost material exhibiting a surface plasmon in the microwave range around 2.9 GHz. Such a heated material should exhibit an emission peak near the plasmon frequency well above ambient emission. Analysis of the signal detected in the near-field should also be a tool to analyze how homogenization theory applies when the distance to the material is of t…
Metamaterials are engineered materials composed of small electrical circuits producing novel interactions with electromagnetic waves. Recently, a new class of metamaterials has been created to mimic the behavior of media displaying electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Here we introduce a planar EIT metamaterial that creates a very large loss contrast between the dark and radiative resonators by employing a superconducting Nb film in the dark element and a normal-metal Au film in the radiative element. Below the critical temperature of Nb, the resistance contrast opens up a transpare…
We provide detailed comparisons between experimental findings and numerical simulations of large cooperatively interacting, spatially disordered metamaterial arrays, consisting of asymmetrically split rings. Simulation methods fully incorporate strong field-mediated inter-meta-atom interactions between discrete resonators and statistical properties of disorder, while approximating the resonators' internal structure. Despite the large system size, we find a qualitative agreement between the simulations and experiments, and characterize the microscopic origins of the observed disorder response. …
We develop a theoretical description of radiative thermal conductivity in hyperbolic metamaterials. We demonstrate a dramatic enhancement of the radiative thermal transport due to the super-singularity of the photonic density of states in hyperbolic media, leading to the radiative heat conductivity which can be comparable to the non-radiative contribution.
The management of the abundant eggshell biowaste produced worldwide has become a problematic issue due to the generated odor and microorganisms after directly disposing eggshell biowaste in landfills. Herein, we propose a novel method to convert the hazardous eggshell biowaste to valuable resources for energy management applications. Eggshell-based films are fabricated by embedding eggshell powders into polymer matrix to achieve highly efficient sub-ambient daytime radiative cooling. Benefiting from the Mie scattering of eggshell particles/air pores in the solar spectrum and strong emission of…
Bound state in the continuum (BIC) is a mathematical concept with an infinite radiative quality factor (Q) that exists only in an ideal infinite array. It was first proposed in quantum mechanics, and extended to general wave phenomena such as acoustic, water, elastic, and electromagnetic waves. In photonics, it is essential to achieve high Q resonances for enhanced light-mater interactions that could enable low-threshold lasers, ultrasensitive sensors, and optical tweezers. Here, we demonstrate dual bound states in the continuum in a subwavelength planar metamaterial cavity that reveal symmetr…
We develop a general formalism to describe the propagation of a near-resonant electromagnetic field in a medium composed of magnetodielectric resonators. As the size and the spatial separation of nanofabricated resonators in a metamaterial array is frequently less than the wavelength, we describe them as discrete scatterers, supporting a single mode of current oscillation represented by a single dynamic variable. We derive a Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism for the coupled electromagnetic fields and oscillating currents in the length gauge, obtained by the Power-Zienau-Woolley transformati…
Metamaterials possess artificial bulk and surface electromagnetic states. Tamed dispersion properties of surface waves allow one to achieve controllable super-Planckian radiative heat transfer (RHT) process between two closely spaced objects. We numerically demonstrate enhanced RHT between two 2D grooved metal plates by a full-wave scattering approach. The enhancement originates from both transverse magnetic spoof surface plasmon polaritons and a series of transverse electric bonding- and anti-bonding waveguide modes at surfaces. The RHT spectrum is frequency-selective, and highly geometricall…
Similar to the diode in electronics, a thermal diode is a two-terminal device that allows heat to transfer easier in one direction (forward bias) than in the opposite direction (reverse bias). Unlike conductive and convective thermal diodes, a photonic thermal diode operates in a contactless mode and may afford a large operating temperature range. In this work, a novel near-field photonic thermal diode with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and indium antimonide (InSb) is proposed and theoretically demonstrated. The temperature dependence of the interband absorption of InSb is used to couple (or d…
Here, we develop a theory of radiative heat transfer based on an equivalent electrical network representation for the hot material slabs in an arbitrary multilayered environment with arbitrary distribution of temperatures and electromagnetic properties among the layers. Our approach is fully equivalent to the known theories operating with the fluctuating current density, while being significantly simpler in analysis and applications. A practical example of the near-infrared heat transfer through the micron gap filled with an indefinite metamaterial is considered using the suggested method. The…
Controlling light propagation using artificial photonic crystals and electromagnetic metamaterials is an important topic in the vibrant field of photonics. Notably, chiral edge states on the surface or at the interface of photonic Chern insulators can be used to make reflection-free waveguides. Here, by both theoretical analysis and electromagnetic simulations, we demonstrate that gyromagnetic hyperbolic metamaterials (GHM) are photonic Chern insulators with superior properties. As a novel mechanism, the simultaneous occurrence of the hyperbolic and gyromagnetic effects in these metamaterials …
Radiative heat transfer between uniform plates is bounded by the narrow range and limited contribution of surface waves. Using a combination of analytical calculations and numerical gradient-based optimization, we show that such a limitation can be overcome in complicated multilayer geometries, allowing the scattering and coupling rates of slab resonances to be altered over a broad range of evanescent wavevectors. We conclude that while the radiative flux between two inhomogeneous slabs can only be weakly enhanced, the flux between a dipolar particle and an inhomogeneous slab---proportional to…
Radiative thermal diodes based on two-element structures rectify heat flows thanks to a temperature dependence of material optical properties. The heat transport asymmetry through these systems, however, remains weak without a significant change in material properties with the temperature. Here we explore the heat transport in three-element radiative systems and demonstrate that a strong asymmetry in the thermal conductance can appear because of many-body interactions, without any dependence of optical properties on the temperature. The analysis of transport in three-body systems made with pol…
To improve the light extraction efficiency of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), we developed a novel substrate, i.e., a metamaterial based flat Moire micro-lens array formed using double nanoimprint, termed Mlens-array, consisting of a hexagonal moiré pattern pillar array. By choosing a low refractive index dielectric material for the pillar array and a high refractive index dielectric material for the layer capped on top of the pillar array, we fabricated the Mlens-array behaving as a conventional convex optical micro-lens array. The Mlens-array was fabricated on a 4-inch wafer-size glas…
In the present work, we theoretically demonstrate, for the first time, that near field radiative transport between 1D periodic grating microstructures separated by subwavelength vacuum gaps can be significantly enhanced by exciting magnetic resonance or polariton. Fluctuational electrodynamics that incorporates scattering matrix theory with rigorous coupled wave analysis is employed to exactly calculate the near field radiative heat flux between two SiC gratings. Besides the well known coupled surface phonon polaritons (SPhP), an additional spectral radiative heat flux peak, which is due to ma…
We demonstrate that the broadband divergence of the photonic density of states in hyperbolic metamaterials leads to giant increase in radiative heat transfer, beyond the limit set by the Stefan-Boltzmann law. The resulting radiative thermal "hyper-conductivity" may approach or even exceed heat conductivity via electrons and phonons in regular solids.
Hyperbolic metamaterials show exceptional optical properties, such as near-perfect broadband absorption, due to their geometrically-engineered optical anisotropy. Many of their proposed applications, such as thermophotovoltaics or radiative cooling, require high-temperature stability. In this work we examine Ag/a-Si multilayers as a model system for the thermal stability of hyperbolic metamaterials. Using a combination of nanotomography, finite element simulations and optical spectroscopy, we map the thermal and optical instability of the metamaterials. Although the thermal instability initiat…
We investigate the optical properties of sub-wavelength layered metal/dielectric structures, also known as hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), using exact analytical Kronig Penney (KP) model. We show that hyperbolic isofrequency surfaces exist for all combinations of layer permittivities and thicknesses, and the largest Purcell enhancements (PE) of spontaneous radiation are achieved away from the nominally hyperbolic region. Detailed comparison of field distributions, dispersion curves, and Purcell factors (PF) between the HMMs and Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) guided modes in metal/dielectri…
