We investigate electronic thermal rectification in ferromagnetic insulator-based superconducting tunnel junctions. Ferromagnetic insulators coupled to superconductors are known to induce sizable spin splitting in the superconducting density of states, and also lead to efficient spin filtering if operated as tunnel barriers. The combination of spin splitting and spin filtering is shown to yield a substantial self-amplification of the electronic heat diode effect due to breaking of the electron-hole symmetry in the system which is added to the thermal asymmetry of the junction. Large spin splitting and large spin polarization can potentially lead to thermal rectification efficiency exceeding 5 .10^4 for realistic parameters in a suitable temperature range, thereby outperforming up to a factor of 250 the heat diode effect achievable with conventional superconducting tunnel junctions. These results could be relevant for improved mastering of the heat currents in innovative phase-coherent caloritronic nanodevices, and for enhanced thermal management of quantum circuits at the nanoscale.
We study the optical rectification in a metallic tunnel junction. We consider a planar junction in a Kretschmann configuration and measure the photon-assisted tunneling under infrared illumination at $λ= 1.5\, μ\mathrm{m}$. To address the microscopic mechanism at the origin of the optical rectification, we compare the photon assisted current and the current-voltage characteristics of the junction measured on a voltage range much greater than $V_0=\frac{hc}{eλ}=0.825 \, \mathrm{V}$. The experimental results do not agree with the Tucker theory based on the exchange of energy quanta between elect…
This work explores different mechanisms that induce thermal rectification in the nanoscale. The presence of interacting energy channels combined with simple asymmetries is sufficient for promoting the desired behavior. We use simple quantum dot configurations, identifying the basic properties that enhance rectification for each case: the size of a quantum dot state space (which suggests the use of scaled up systems with many interacting channels), tunneling asymmetries due to coherent tunneling in a double quantum dot, or quantum interference in a triangular triple quantum dot. An efficient an…
Electrically-contacted optical gap antennas are nanoscale interface devices enabling the transduction between photons and electrons. This new generation of devices captures visible to near infrared electromagnetic radiation and converts the incident energy in a direct-current (DC) electrical signal. The nanoscale rectenna is usually constituted of metal elements (e.g. gold). Light absorption by the metal contacts may lead to additional thermal effects which need to be taken into account to understand the complete photo- response of the device. The purpose of this communication is to discuss th…
Nonlinear devices, such as transistors, enable contemporary computing technologies. We theoretically investigate nonlinear effects, bearing a high fundamental scientific and technical relevance, in magnonics with emphasis on superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids. Accounting for finite magnon chemical potential, we theoretically demonstrate magnonic spin-Joule heating, the spin analogue of conventional electronic Joule heating. Besides suggesting a key contribution to magnonic heat transport in a broad range of devices, it provides insights into the thermal physics of non-conserved bosonic excitat…
Spintronic rf detectors were demonstrated, recently, for energy harvesting and wireless communication at low input power. Here we report on the optimization of the rectified output dc voltage using magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) with strong perpendicular anisotropy (PMA) of both the polarizing and the free layer. The magnetization of the polarizing layer is fixed out of plane, while the free layer thickness is adjusted so that its magnetization orientation changes from in plane to out of plane. The rectification dc output voltage lies in the mV range for moderate rf powers, with a signal to n…
We analyze the heat current traversing a quantum dot sandwiched between a ferromagnetic and a superconducting electrode. The heat flow generated in response to a voltage bias presents rectification as a function of the gate potential applied to the quantum dot. Remarkably, in the thermally driven case the heat shows a strong diode effect with large asymmetry ratios that can be externally tuned with magnetic fields or spin-polarized tunneling. Our results thus demonstrate the importance of hybrid systems as promising candidates for thermal applications.
Spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) is a common method used to measure spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayer structures. In the course of a measurement, other resonant processes such as spin pumping (SP) and heating can cause spin current or heat flows between the layers, inducing additional resonant voltage signals via the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) and Nernst effects (NE). In the standard ST-FMR geometry, these extra artifacts exhibit a dependence on the angle of an in-plane magnetic field that is identical to the rectification signal from the SOTs. We sh…

Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) have attracted strong research interest within the last decades due to their potential use as nonvolatile memory such as MRAM as well as for magnetic logic applications. Half-metallic magnets (HMMs) have been suggested as ideal electrode materials for MTJs to achieve an extremely large tunnel-magnetoresistance (TMR) effect. Despite their high TMR ratios, MTJs based on HMMs do not exhibit current rectification, i.e., a diode effect, which was achieved in a magnetic tunnel junction concept based on HMMs and type-II spin-gapless semiconductors (SGSs). The proposed…
The rectification of electromagnetic waves to direct currents is a crucial process for energy harvesting, beyond-5G wireless communications, ultra-fast science, and observational astronomy. As the radiation frequency is raised to the sub-terahertz (THz) domain, ac-to-dc conversion by conventional electronics becomes challenging and requires alternative rectification protocols. Here we address this challenge by tunnel field-effect transistors made of bilayer graphene (BLG). Taking advantage of BLG's electrically tunable band structure, we create a lateral tunnel junction and couple it to an ant…
We theoretically explore the behavior of thermal transport in the topological SQUIPT, in the linear and nonlinear regime. The device consists of a topological Josephson junction based on a two-dimensional topological insulator in contact with two superconducting leads, and a probe tunnel coupled to the topological edge states of the junction. We compare the performance of a normal metal and a graphene probe, showing that the topological SQUIPT behaves as a passive thermal rectifier and that it can reach a rectification coefficient of up to $~ 145\%$ with the normal metal probe. Moreover, the i…
We investigate the rectification of heat current carried by electrons through a double quantum dot (DQD) system under a temperature bias. The DQD can be realized by molecules such as suspended carbon nanotube and be described by the Anderson-Holstein model in presence of electron-phonon interaction. Strong electron-phonon interaction can lead to formation of polaronic states in which electronic states are dressed by phonon cloud. Dressed tunneling approximation (DTA), which is nonperturbative in dealing with strong electron-phonon interaction, is employed to obtain the heat current expression.…
Resonant magneto-tunneling between normal and ferromagnetic electrodes in relation to the three-terminal spin transport
最近提出的机制[Y。Song和H. Dery,Phys. Rev. Lett.
We present a comprehensive and systematic study of thermal rectification in a prototypical low-dimensional quantum system -- a non-linear resonator: we identify necessary conditions to observe thermal rectification and we discuss strategies to maximize it. We focus, in particular, on the case where anharmonicity is very strong and the system reduces to a qubit. In the latter case, we derive general upper bounds on rectification which hold in the weak system-bath coupling regime, and we show how the Lamb shift can be exploited to enhance rectification. We then go beyond the weak-coupling regime…
