We study spin transport in nonitinerant one-dimensional quantum spin chains. Motivated by possible applications in spintronics, we consider rectification effects in both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic systems. We find that the crucial ingredients in designing a system that displays a nonzero rectification current are an anisotropy in the exchange interaction of the spin chain combined with an offset magnetic field. For both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic systems we can exploit the gap in the excitation spectrum that is created by a bulk anisotropy to obtain a measurable rectification effect at realistic magnetic fields. For antiferromagnetic systems we also find that we can achieve a similar effect by introducing a magnetic impurity, obtained by altering two neighboring bonds in the spin Hamiltonian.
Relative weight of the inverse spin Hall and spin rectification effects for metallic Py,Fe/Pt and insulating YIG/Pt bilayers estimated by angular dependent spin pumping measurements
In the absence of an external magnetic field and a spin-polarized charge current, an antiferromagnetic system supports two degenerate magnon modes. An applied thermal bias activates the magnetic dynamics, leading to a magnon flow from the hot to the cold edge (magnonic spin Seebeck current). Both degenerate bands contribute to the magnon current but the orientations of the magnetic moments underlying the magnons are opposite in different bands. Therefore, while the magnon current is nonzero, the net spin current is zero.
Over the last two decades organic spintronics has developed into a striving field with exciting reports of long spin diffusion lengths and spin relaxation times in organic semiconductors (OSCs). Easily processed and inexpensive, OSCs are considered a potential alternative to inorganic materials for use in spintronic applications. Spin currents have been detected in a wide range of materials, however, there is still uncertainty over the origin of the signals. Recently, we explored spin transport through an organic semiconductor with lateral spin injection and detection architectures, where the …
In order to reveal mechanisms to control and manipulate spin currents, we perform a detailed investigation of the dephasing effects in the open XX model with a Lindblad dynamics involving global dissipators and thermal baths. Specifically, we consider dephasing noise modelled by current preserving Lindblad dissipators acting on graded versions of these spin systems, that is, systems in which the magnetic field and/or the spin interaction are growing (decreasing) along the chain. In our analysis, we study the non-equilibrium steady-state via the covariance matrix using the Jordan-Wigner approac…
We study the nonequilibrium Seebeck spin transport across metal-magnetic insulator interfaces. The conjugate-converted thermal-spin transport is assisted by the exchange interaction at the interface, between conduction electrons in the metal lead and localized spins in the insulating magnet lead. We predict the rectification and negative differential spin Seebeck effect and resolve their microscopic mechanism, as a consequence of the strongly-fluctuated electronic density of states in the metal lead. The rectification of spin Peltier effect is also discussed. The phenomena predicted here are r…
Nonlinear devices, such as transistors, enable contemporary computing technologies. We theoretically investigate nonlinear effects, bearing a high fundamental scientific and technical relevance, in magnonics with emphasis on superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids. Accounting for finite magnon chemical potential, we theoretically demonstrate magnonic spin-Joule heating, the spin analogue of conventional electronic Joule heating. Besides suggesting a key contribution to magnonic heat transport in a broad range of devices, it provides insights into the thermal physics of non-conserved bosonic excitat…
Spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) is a common method used to measure spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayer structures. In the course of a measurement, other resonant processes such as spin pumping (SP) and heating can cause spin current or heat flows between the layers, inducing additional resonant voltage signals via the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) and Nernst effects (NE). In the standard ST-FMR geometry, these extra artifacts exhibit a dependence on the angle of an in-plane magnetic field that is identical to the rectification signal from the SOTs. We sh…
We show that for a quantum wire with a local asymmetric scattering potential the principal channels for charge and heat rectification decouple and renormalise differently under electron interactions, with heat rectification generally being more relevant. The polarisation of the rectification results from quantum interference and is tuneable through external gating. Furthermore, for spin polarised or helical electrons and sufficiently strong interactions a regime can be obtained in which heat transport is strongly rectified but charge rectification is very weak.
Spin pumping is a technique widely used to generate the pure spin current and characterize the spin-charge conversion in various systems. The reversing sign of the symmetric Lorentzian charge current with respect to opposite magnetic field is generally accepted as the key criterion to identify its pure spin current origin. However, we herein find that the rectified voltage due to the planar Hall effect can exhibit similar spurious signal, complicating and even misleading the analysis. The distribution of microwave magnetic field and induction current has strong influence on the magnetic field …
Periodically driven Kitaev chains are known to exhibit novel Floquet Majorana fermions and anomalous Floquet end modes. The fact that `quasienergy in Floquet systems is periodic' poses a difficulty in defining the ground state in periodically driven systems. To overcome this problem, we start with the ground state of the undriven Kitaev chain and gradually switch on the periodic driving in chemical potential over a timescale $τ$. The extent to which the single particle eigenstates of the undriven system get distributed among the Floquet states upon driving can be characterized by inverse parti…

Spintronic rf detectors were demonstrated, recently, for energy harvesting and wireless communication at low input power. Here we report on the optimization of the rectified output dc voltage using magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) with strong perpendicular anisotropy (PMA) of both the polarizing and the free layer. The magnetization of the polarizing layer is fixed out of plane, while the free layer thickness is adjusted so that its magnetization orientation changes from in plane to out of plane. The rectification dc output voltage lies in the mV range for moderate rf powers, with a signal to n…
