We describe a numerical scheme for exactly simulating the heat current behavior in a quantum harmonic chain with self-consistent reservoirs. Numerically-exact results are compared to classical simulations and to the quantum behavior under the linear response approximation. In the classical limit or for small temperature biases our results coincide with previous calculations. At large bias and for low temperatures the quantum dynamics of the system fundamentally differs from the close-to-equilibrium behavior, revealing in particular the effect of thermal rectification for asymmetric chains. Since this effect is absent in the classical analog of our model, we conclude that in the quantum model studied here thermal rectification is a purely quantum phenomenon, rooted in the quantum statistics.
The amount of heat an integer quantum Hall edge state can carry in equilibrium is quantized in universal units of the heat flux quantum $J_q= \frac{πk_B^2}{12 \hbar}T^2$ per edge state. We adress the question of how heat transport in realistic one dimensional devices can differ from the usual chiral Luttinger liquid theory. We show that a local measurement can reveal a nonquantized amount of heat carried by the edge states, despite a globally equilibrium situation. More specifically, we report a heat enhancement effect in edge states interacting with ohmic reservoirs in the presence of nonloca…
We discuss whether, and under which conditions, it is possible to realize a heat engine simply by dynamically modulating the couplings between the quantum working medium and thermal reservoirs. For that purpose, we consider the paradigmatic model of a quantum harmonic oscillator, exposed to a minimal modulation, that is, a monochromatic driving of the coupling to only one of the thermal baths. We demonstrate, at any order in the system/bath coupling strength, that in this setup non--Markovianity of the bath is a necessary condition to obtain a heat engine. In addition, we identify suitable str…
The fluctuations of the heat current in a quantum dot coupled to electron reservoirs are calculated at finite frequency, voltage and temperature using the nonequilibrium Green function technique. The non-symmetrized heat noise is expressed as an integral on energy containing four contributions, each of which includes transmission amplitudes, electron-hole pair distribution functions and energy difference factors. The effect of the asymmetry of the couplings between the quantum dot and the reservoirs is studied. Features of the heat noise are highlighted and discussed for an equilibrium and an …
We investigate the transport properties of an anharmonic oscillator, modeled by a single-site Bose-Hubbard model, coupled to two different thermal baths using the numerically exact thermofield based chain-mapping matrix product states (TCMPS) approach. We compare the effectiveness of TCMPS to probe the nonequilibrium dynamics of strongly interacting system irrespective of the system-bath coupling against the global master equation approach in Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad form. We discuss the effect of on-site interactions, temperature bias as well as the system-bath couplings on the s…
We propose a quantum absorption refrigerator using the quantum physics of resonant tunneling through quantum dots. The cold and hot reservoirs are fermionic leads, tunnel coupled via quantum dots to a central fermionic cavity, and we propose configurations in which the heat absorbed from the (very hot) central cavity is used as a resource to selectively transfer heat from the cold reservoir on the left, to the hot reservoir on the right. The heat transport in the device is particle---hole symmetric; we find two regimes of cooling as a function of the energy of the dots---symmetric with respect…
Harmonic oscillator chains connecting two harmonic reservoirs at different constant temperatures cannot act as thermal diodes, irrespective of structural asymmetry. However, here we prove that perfectly harmonic junctions can rectify heat once the reservoirs (described by white Langevin noise) are placed under temperature gradients, which are asymmetric at the two sides, an effect that we term "temperature-gradient harmonic oscillator diodes". This nonlinear diode effect results from the additional constraint -- the imposed thermal gradient at the boundaries. We demonstrate the rectification b…
