The recoil properties of fragments produced by the interaction of 4.4 GeV deuteron with 197Au target have been studied. New experimental data on recoil properties for 90 nuclei, varying from 24Na to 198Au, were obtained. The technique applied was the {thick-target thick-catcher} and induced activity method. The deuteron beam was obtained from the Nuclotron of the Laboratory of High Energies (LHE), Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna. The experimental data were analyzed on the basis of the standard two-step vector model formalism. From this analysis we could find evidence to support the existence of several different mechanisms, such as spallation, fission and fragmentation, in the reaction investigated. Fission contributed appreciably to the formation of products in the mass region of 65 < A < 120. The kinematic characteristics of residual nuclei formed in the present deuteron-induced reaction have been compared to those from proton-induced reactions with gold target.
The $^{2}$H$(e,e'p)n$ cross sections have been measured at negative 4-momentum transfers of $Q^{2} = 4.5\pm0.5$ (GeV/c)$^{2}$ and $Q^{2} = 3.5\pm0.5$ (GeV/c)$^{2}$ reaching neutron recoil (missing) momenta up to $p_{\mathrm{r}}\sim$1.0 GeV/c. The data have been obtained at fixed neutron recoil angles $5^{\circ}\leqθ_{nq}\leq95^{\circ}$ with respect to the 3-momentum transfer $\vec{q}$. The new data agree well with the previous data which reached $p_{\mathrm{r}}\sim550$ MeV/c. At $θ_{nq}=35^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$, final state interactions (FSI), meson exchange currents (MEC) and isobar confi…
We report on charged hadron production in deuteron-gold reactions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Our measurements in the deuteron-direction cover 1.4 < eta < 2.2, referred to as forward rapidity, and in the gold-direction -2.0 < eta < -1.4, referred to as backward rapidity, and a transverse momentum range p_T = 0.5-4.0 GeV/c. We compare the relative yields for different deuteron-gold collision centrality classes. We observe a suppression relative to binary collision scaling at forward rapidity, sensitive to low momentum fraction (x) partons in the gold nucleus, and an enhancement at backward rapidit…
We present transverse momentum (p_T) spectra of charged hadrons measured in deuteron-gold and nucleon-gold collisions at \sqrts = 200 GeV for four centrality classes. Nucleon-gold collisions were selected by tagging events in which a spectator nucleon was observed in one of two forward rapidity detectors. The spectra and yields were investigated as a function of the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, ν, suffered by deuteron nucleons. A comparison of charged particle yields to those in p+p collisions show that the yield per nucleon-nucleon collision saturates with νfor high momentum p…
The recoil properties of the product nuclei from the interaction of 3.65 GeV/nucleon protons and deuterons with $^{118}Sn$ target have been studied by the method of catching foils on the beams of LHE JINR. The mathematical formalism of the standard two step vector model was used for the analysis of experimental results. The obtained results for the protons are compared with the ones obtained for the deuterons. The total energy of the deuterons beam was 3.65GeV/nucleon. It is interesting to note that the forward velocity v and the recoil nuclei kinetic energy increases linearly with the increas…
The independent cross section ratio for production of nuclei from 197Au targets irradiated with 4 GeV deuterons have been measured by off-line gamma-spectroscopy. On the basis of the measured independent cross section ratio of 198m, gAu the average intrinsic angular momentum of the primary nucleus was estimated by means of a simple statistical-model analysis based on the formalism developed by Huizenga and Vandenbosch.
Investigations of cross-sections of deuteron induced nuclear reactions on gold were extended up to 50 MeV by using the standard stacked foil irradiation technique and high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. New cross-sections are reported for the $^{197}$Au(d,xn)$^{197m,197g,195m,195g,193m,193g}$Hg and $^{197}$Au(d,x)$^{198m,198g,196m,196g,195,194}$Au nuclear reactions. The application for production of the medically relevant isotopes $^{198}$Au and $^{195m,195g,197m,197g}$Hg is discussed, including the comparison with other charged particle induced production routes. The possible use of the $…
A new calculation of R_{dAu} has been performed using the 2003 d+Au data and the higher-statistics 2005 p+p data. These nuclear modification factors are compared to calculations using nuclear-modified PDFs and a J/psi breakup cross section is extracted. These values are then used to project the cold nuclear matter effects in Au+Au collisions. Additionally, a more data-driven projection is performed.
The relative velocity correlation function of pairs of intermediate mass fragments has been studied for d+Au collitions at 4.4 GeV. Experimental correlation functions are compared to that obtained by multibody Coulomb trajectory calculations under the assumption of various decay timees of the fragmenting system. The combined approach with the empirically modified intranuclear cascade code followed by the statistical multifragmentation model was used to generate the starting conditions for these calculations. The fragment emossion time is found to be less than 40 fm/c.
The cross sections of 110 radioactive nuclide with mass numbers 22 < A < 198 amu from the interaction of 2.2 GeV/nucleon deuterons from the Nuclotron of the Laboratory of High Energies (LHE), Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) at Dubna with a 197Au target are investigated using induced activity method. The results including charge and mass distributions are parameterized in terms of 3-parameter equation in order to complete the real isobaric distribution. Using data from charge distribution total mass-yield distribution was obtained. The analysis of the mass-yield distribution allows …
We consider hadron production in deuteron gold collisions at RHIC in the forward rapidity region. Treating the target nucleus as a Color Glass Condensate and the projectile deuteron as a dilute system of valence quarks, we obtain good agreement with the BRAHMS minimum bias data on charged hadron production in the forward rapidity ($y=3.2$) and low $p_t$ region. We provide predictions for neutral pion production in minimum bias deuteron gold collisions in the forward rapidity region, $y=3.8$, measured by the STAR collaboration at RHIC.
We present a new analysis of J/psi production yields in deuteron-gold collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV using data taken by the PHENIX experiment in 2003 and previously published in [S.S. Adler et al., Phys. Rev. Lett 96, 012304 (2006)]. The high statistics proton-proton J/psi data taken in 2005 is used to improve the baseline measurement and thus construct updated cold nuclear matter modification factors R_dAu. A suppression of J/psi in cold nuclear matter is observed as one goes forward in rapidity (in the deuteron-going direction), corresponding to a region more sensitive to initial state …
We calculate azimuthal correlations in dAu collisions at different rapidities and centralities and argue that experimentally observed depletion of the back-to-back pick can be quantitatively explained by gluon saturation in the Color Glass Condensate of the Gold nucleus.
All of the experimental data points presented in the original paper are correct and unchanged (including statistical and systematic uncertainties). However, herein we correct a comparison between the experimental data and a theoretical picture, because we discovered a mistake in the code used. All of the most probable sigma_breakup values differ by less than 0.4 mb from those originally presented. However, the one standard deviation uncertainties (that include contributions from both the statistical and systematic uncertainties on the experimental data points) are approximately 30-60% larger t…
Quasi-free photoproduction of $η'$ mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the combined Crystal Barrel - TAPS detector. The experiment was done at a tagged photon beam of the ELSA electron accelerator in Bonn for incident photon energies from the production threshold up to 2.5 GeV. The $η'$-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons. The quasi-free proton data are in good agreement with the results for free protons, indicating that nuclear effects have no significant impact. The coincidence with recoil neutrons provides the first d…

$^{2}\mathrm{H}(e,e'p)n$ cross sections have been measured at 4-momentum transfers of $Q^{2} = 4.5 \pm 0.5$ (GeV/c)$^{2}$ over a range of neutron recoil momenta, $p_{\mathrm{r}}$, reaching up to $\sim1.0$ GeV/c. The data were obtained at fixed neutron recoil angles $θ_{nq} = 35^\circ$, $45^\circ$ and $75^{\circ}$ with respect to the 3-momentum transfer $\vec q$. The new data agree well with previous data which reached $p_{\mathrm{r}}\sim500$ MeV/c. At $θ_{nq} = 35^\circ$ and $45^\circ$, final state interactions (FSI), meson exchange currents (MEC) and isobar currents (IC) are suppressed and th…
We report the measurement of charged hadron production at different pseudo-rapidity values in deuteron+gold as well as proton+proton collisions at $sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200GeV at RHIC. The nuclear modification factors $R_{dAu}$ and $R_{cp}$ are used to investigate new behaviors in the deuteron+gold system as function of rapidity and the centrality of the collisions respectively.
We present a review of parton saturation/Color Glass Condensate physics in the context of deuteron-gold ($d+Au$) collisions at RHIC. Color Glass Condensate physics is a universal description of all high energy hadronic and nuclear interactions. It comprises classical (McLerran-Venugopalan model and Glauber-Mueller rescatterings) and quantum evolution (JIMWLK and BK equations) effects both in small-$x$ hadronic and nuclear wave functions and in the high energy scattering processes. Proton-nucleus (or $d+A$) collisions present a unique opportunity to study Color Glass Condensate predictions, sin…
Experimental results on heavy-quark production in proton-proton, deuteron-gold, and gold-gold collisions at sqrt(s_(NN)) = 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are reviewed.
The d(e,e'p) cross section at a momentum transfer of 3.5 (GeV/c)^2 was measured over a kinematical range that made it possible to study this reaction for a set of fixed missing momenta as a function of the neutron recoil angle theta_nq and to extract missing momentum distributions for fixed values of theta_nq up to 0.55 GeV/c. In the region of 35 (deg) <= theta_nq <= 45 (deg) recent calculations, which predict that final state interactions are small, agree reasonably well with the experimental data. Therefore these experimental reduced cross sections provide direct access to the high momentum …
Transverse momentum spectra of proton, deuteron and triton in gold-gold (Au-Au) collisions at 54.4 GeV are analyzed in different centrality bins by the blast wave model with Tsallis statistics. The model results are approximately in agreement with the experimental data measured by STAR Collaboration in special transverse momentum ranges. We extracted the kinetic freeze out temperature, transverse flow velocity and freeze out volume from the transverse momentum spectra of the particles. It is observed that the kinetic freeze out temperature is increasing from central to peripheral collisions. H…
We report on two-particle azimuthal angle correlations between charged hadrons at forward/backward (deuteron/gold going direction) rapidity and charged hadrons at mid-rapidity in deuteron-gold (d+Au) and proton-proton (p+p) collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Jet structures are observed in the correlations which we quantify in terms of the conditional yield and angular width of away side partners. The kinematic region studied here samples partons in the gold nucleus carrying nucleon momentum fraction x~0.1 to x~0.01. Within this range, we find no x dependence of the jet structure in d+Au colli…
The transverse momentum spectra of charged particles produced in proton(deuteron)-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at high energies are analyzed by the Hagedorn thermal model and the standard distribution in terms of multi-component. The experimental data measured in central and peripheral gold-gold (Au-Au) and deuteron-gold ($d$-Au) collisions by the PHENIX Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), as well as in central and peripheral lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-lead ($p$-Pb) collisions by the ALICE Collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are fitted by the t…
Using the forward time projection chambers of the STAR experiment at the Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider we measure the centrality dependent Lambda and Anti-Lambda yields and inverse slope parameters in d+Au collisions at forward and backward rapidities y = +- 2.75. The contributions of different processes to stopping and baryon transport are probed exploiting the inherent asymmetry of the d+Au system. Comparisons to model calculations show that the baryon transport on the deuteron side is due to multiple collisions of the deuteron nucleons with gold participants. On the gold side, …
The recoil properties of the product nuclei from the interaction of 2.2 GeV/nucleon 12-C ions from Nuclotron of the Laboratory of High Energies (LHE), Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) at Dubna with a 118-Sn target have been studied using catcher foils. The experimental data were analyzed using the mathematical formalism of the standard two-step vector model. The results for 12-C ions are compared with those for deuterons and protons. Three different Los Alamos versions of the Quark-Gluon String Model (LAQGSM) were used for comparison with our experimental data.
The current normalization of the cross section of inclusive high-pT particle production in deuteron-gold collisions measured RHIC relies on Glauber calculations for the inelastic d-Au cross section. These calculations should be corrected for diffraction. Moreover, they miss the Gribov's inelastic shadowing which makes nuclei more transparent (color transparency). The magnitude of this effect rises with energy and it may dramatically affect the normalization of the RHIC data. We evaluate these corrections employing the light-cone dipole formalism and found a rather modest corrections for the cu…
The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured single electron spectra in proton-proton, deuteron-gold and gold-gold collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The photonic contribution (photon conversions and Daltiz decays) is subtracted from the inclusive spectra resulting in non-photonic electron spectra. The principal source of non-photonic electrons is the semi-leptonic decay of charm and bottom mesons. The implications for heavy flavor production in hot and cold nuclear systems are discussed.
We discuss the process of deep-inelastic electron scattering (DIS) on the polarized deuteron with detection of a nucleon in the nuclear fragmentation region ("spectator tagging"). We cover (a) the general structure of the semi-inclusive DIS cross section on a spin-1 target; (b) the tagged structure functions in the impulse approximation, where deuteron structure is described by the $NN$ light-front wave function; (c) the extraction of free neutron structure through on-shell extrapolation in the recoil proton momentum. As an application we consider the extraction of the neutron spin structure f…
High precision measurements of induced and transferred recoil proton polarization in d(polarized gamma, polarized p})n have been performed for photon energies of 277--357 MeV and theta_cm = 20 degrees -- 120 degrees. The measurements were motivated by a longstanding discrepancy between meson-baryon model calculations and data at higher energies. At the low energies of this experiment, theory continues to fail to reproduce the data, indicating that either something is missing in the calculations and/or there is a problem with the accuracy of the nucleon-nucleon potential being used.
Results are presented of an ongoing analysis of direct photon production in s_(NN)=200GeV deuteron-gold collisions with the STAR experiment at RHIC. A significant excess of direct photons is observed near mid-rapidity 0<y<1 and found to be consistent with next-to-leading order pQCD calculations including the contribution from fragmentation photons.
The spectra of charged hadrons produced near mid-rapidity in d+Au, p+Au and n+Au collisions at 200 GeV center of mass energy per nucleon pair are presented as a function of transverse momentum and centrality. These measurements were performed using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Nucleon-nucleus interactions were extracted from the d+Au data by identifying the deuteron spectators. The deuteron spectators were measured using two calorimeters; one that detected forward-going single neutrons and a newly installed calorimeter that detected forward-going single pr…
Measuring Compton scattered photons and recoil neutrons in coincidence, quasi-free Compton scattering by the neutron has been investigated at MAMI (Mainz) at $theta^{lab}_γ=136^o$ in an energy range from 200 to 400 MeV. From the data a polarizability difference of $α_n - β_n = 9.8 \pm 3.6(stat)^{+2.1}_{-1.1}(syst)\pm 2.2(model)$ in units of $10^{-4}fm^3$ has been determined. In combination with the polarizability sum $α_n+β_n= 15.2\pm 0.5$ deduced from photo absorption data, the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities, $α_n=12.5\pm 1.8(stat)^{+1.1}_{-0.6}(syst)\pm 1.1(model)$ and $β_n =…

Precise data for quasi-free photoproduction of $η$ mesons off the deuteron have been measured at the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up to 2.5 GeV. The $η$-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and neutrons. Possible nuclear effects like Fermi motion and re-scattering can be studied via a comparison of the quasi-free reaction off the bound proton to $η$-production off the free proton. No significant effects beyond the folding of the free cross section with the momentum distribution of the bound protons hav…
We consider production of prompt photons in high energy gold-gold and deuteron-gold collisions in the forward rapidity region of RHIC ($y \sim 3.8$). In this kinematics, the projectile partons typically have large $x_{bj}$ while the target partons are mostly at very small $x_{bj}$ so that the primary partonic collisions involve valence quarks from the projectile and gluons from the target. We take the target nucleus to be a Color Glass Condensate while the projectile deuteron or nucleus is treated as a dilute system of partons. We show that the photon production cross section can be written as…
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) studies nuclear matter under a variety of conditions. Cold nuclear matter is probed with deuteron-gold collisions, while hot nuclear matter(possibly a quark-gluon plasma (QGP)) is created in heavy-ion collisions. The distribution of spin in polarized nucleons is measured with polarized proton collisions, and photoproduction is studied using the photons that accompany heavy nuclei. The deuteron-gold data shows less forward particle production than would be expected from a superposition of $pp$ collisions, as expected due to saturation/shadowing. Partic…
Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up to 2.5 GeV at the Bonn ELSA accelerator. The eta-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons, which allows a detailed comparison of the quasi-free n(gamma, eta)n and p(gamma, eta)p reactions. The excitation function for eta-production off the neutron shows a pronounced bump-like structure at W=1.68 GeV (E_g ~ 1 GeV), which is absent for the proton.
We show that an unambiguous way of determining the universal limiting fragmentation region is to consider the derivative ($d^2n/dη^2$) of the pseudo-rapidity distribution per participant pair. In addition, we find that the transition region between the fragmentation and the central plateau regions exhibits a second kind of universal behavior that is only apparent in $d^2n/dη^2$. The $\sqrts$ dependence of the height of the central plateau $(dn/dη)_{η=0}$ and the total charged particle multiplicity $n_{\rm total}$ critically depend on the behavior of this universal transition curve. Analyzing a…
The vector and tensor analysing powers, $A_y$ and $A_{yy}$, of the $\vec{p}d \to n\{pp\}_{s}$ charge-exchange reaction have been measured at a beam energy of 600 MeV at the COSY-ANKE facility by using an unpolarised proton beam incident on an internal storage cell target filled with polarised deuterium gas. The low energy recoiling protons were measured in a pair of silicon tracking telescopes placed on either side of the target. Putting a cut of 3 MeV on the diproton excitation energy ensured that the two protons were dominantly in the $^{1}S_{0}$ state, here denoted by $\{pp\}_{s}$. The pola…
I discuss recent experimental data on the Cronin effect in deuteron-gold collisions at the top RHIC energy, in a pseudorapidity range [-2,3]. Two theoretical approaches are compared and contrasted: the pQCD-based Glauber-Eikonal model and Colour Glass Condensate models. Neither can describe the Cronin effect over the whole pseudorapidity interval up to now explored experimentally, its most mysterious and intriguing part being at negative rapidity.
We collected the experimental data of transverse momentum spectra of identified particles produced in proton-proton ($p$-$p$), deuteron-gold ($d$-Au or $d$-$A$), gold-gold (Au-Au or $A$-$A$), proton-lead ($p$-Pb or $p$-$A$), and lead-lead (Pb-Pb or $A$-$A$) collisions measured by the ALICE, CMS, LHCb, NA49, NA61/SHINE, PHENIX, and STAR collaborations at different center-of mass energies. The multisource thermal model at the quark level or the participant quark model is used to describe the experimental data. The free parameters, the effective temperature $T$, entropy index-related $n$, and rev…
