Part 1 of "Project X: Accelerator Reference Design, Physics Opportunities, Broader Impacts". Part 1 contains the volume Preface and a description of the conceptual design for a high-intensity proton accelerator facility being developed to support a world-leading program of Intensity Frontier physics over the next two decades at Fermilab. Subjects covered include performance goals, the accelerator physics design, and the technological basis for such a facility. Part 2 is available as arXiv:1306.5009 [hep-ex] and Part 3 is available as arXiv:1306.5024 [physics.acc-ph].
Development of energy-efficient fast cycling accelerator magnets is critical for the next generation of proton rapid cycling synchrotrons (RCS) for neutrino research and booster accelerators of future muon colliders. We see a unique opportunity for having such magnets to be built on base of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS). Besides being superconducting at relatively high temperatures, rare-earth HTS tapes have shown very small AC losses compared to low-temperature NbTi superconductor cables. Recent tests of the HTS-based 0.5 m long two-bore superconducting accelerator magnet have shown …
The Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) [1] has been developed at Fermilab to provide powerful proton beams to the laboratorys experiments. An 800-MeV superconducting linear accelerator-a centerpiece of the project-is currently under construction in Batavia, Illinois (USA). After completion, the superconducting linac will be the starting point for the 1.2 MW (Phase 1) and 2.4-MW (Phase 2) proton beam that is needed for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) at Fermilab [2]. Due to unavoidable loss of a fraction of the beam in the accelerator components, a certain level of radiation will be…
The opportunity offered by the ESSnuSB project to exploit the larger leptonic CP violation signal at the second oscillation maximum and the requirements of this project on the ESS accelerator complex
The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e$^+$e$^-$-collider under development by the CLIC accelerator collaboration, hosted by CERN. The CLIC accelerator has been optimised for three energy stages at centre-of-mass energies 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV. CLIC uses a novel two-beam acceleration technique, with normal-conducting accelerating structures operating in the range of 70-100 MV/m. The report describes recent achievements in accelerator design, technology development and prototyping, system tests and beam tests. Large-scale CLIC-specific beam tests have tak…

Experimental results and simulation models show that crystals might play a relevant role for the development of new generations of high-energy and high-intensity particle accelerators and might disclose innovative possibilities at existing ones. In this paper we describe the most advanced manufacturing techniques of crystals suitable for operations at ultra-high energy and ultra-high intensity particle accelerators, reporting as an example of potential applications the collimation of the particle beams circulating in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which will be upgraded through the additio…
This manuscript is devoted to the description of the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) project and its physics program focused on measurements involving heavy quarks. It summarizes the report submitted to the US 2021 Snowmass Process and European Strategy on Particle Physics. The proposed electron-positron collider based on established technologies will provide high instantaneous luminosities at center-of-mass energies from the Z resonance through the ZH and WW and up to the $t\bar{t}$ threshold. This will allow a very rich set of fundamental measurements as well as the study of heavy-fl…
