We show how the high order finite element spaces of differential forms due to Raviart-Thomas-Nédelec-Hiptmair fit into the framework of finite element systems, in an elaboration of the finite element exterior calculus of Arnold-Falk-Winther. Based on observations by Bossavit, we provide new low order degrees of freedom. As an alternative to existing choices of bases, we provide canonical resolutions in terms of scalar polynomials and Whitney forms.
Mesh sensitivity of finite element solution for linear elliptic partial differential equations is analyzed. A bound for the change in the finite element solution is obtained in terms of the mesh deformation and its gradient. The bound shows how the finite element solution changes continuously with the mesh. The result holds in any dimension and for arbitrary unstructured simplicial meshes, general linear elliptic partial differential equations, and general finite element approximations.

In this paper we introduce a procedure, based on the method of equivariant moving frames, for formulating continuous Galerkin finite element schemes that preserve the Lie point symmetries of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations. Our methodology applies to projectable and non-projectable symmetry group actions, to ordinary differential equations of arbitrary order, and finite element approximations of arbitrary polynomial degree. Several examples are included to illustrate various features of the symmetry-preserving process. We summarise extensive numerical experiments sho…
In this paper, a symmetrized two-scale finite element method is proposed for a class of partial differential equations with symmetric solutions. With this method, the finite element approximation on a fine tensor product grid is reduced to the finite element approximations on a much coarse grid and a univariant fine grid. It is shown by both theory and numerics including electronic structure calculations that the resulting approximation still maintains an asymptotically optimal accuracy. Consequently the symmetrized two-scale finite element method reduces computational cost significantly.
We address fundamental aspects in the approximation theory of vector-valued finite element methods, using finite element exterior calculus as a unifying framework. We generalize the Clément interpolant and the Scott-Zhang interpolant to finite element differential forms, and we derive a broken Bramble-Hilbert Lemma. Our interpolants require only minimal smoothness assumptions and respect partial boundary conditions. This permits us to state local error estimates in terms of the mesh size. Our theoretical results apply to curl-conforming and divergence-conforming finite element methods over sim…
We consider a mixed dimensional elliptic partial differential equation posed in a bulk domain with a large number of embedded interfaces. In particular, we study well-posedness of the problem and regularity of the solution. We also propose a fitted finite element approximation and prove an a priori error bound. For the solution of the arising linear system we propose and analyze an iterative method based on subspace decomposition. Finally, we present numerical experiments and achieve rapid convergence using the proposed preconditioner, confirming our theoretical findings.
We develop a unified theory for continuous in time finite element discretisations of partial differential equations posed in evolving domains including the consideration of equations posed on evolving surfaces and bulk domains as well coupled surface bulk systems. We use an abstract variational setting with time dependent function spaces and abstract time dependent finite element spaces. Optimal a priori bounds are shown under usual assumptions on perturbations of bilinear forms and approximation properties of the abstract finite element spaces. The abstract theory is applied to evolving finit…
We consider the least-squares finite element method (lsfem) for systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations and establish an optimal error estimate for this method when piecewise linear elements are used. The main assumptions are that the vector field is sufficiently smooth and that the local Lipschitz constant, as well as the operator norm of the Jacobian matrix associated with the nonlinearity, are sufficiently small when restricted to a suitable neighborhood of the true solution for the considered initial value problem. This theoretic optimality is further illustrated numerically, …
In this paper, we study the existence, regularity, and approximation of the solution for a class of nonlinear fractional differential equations. {In order to do this}, suitable variational formulations are defined for a nonlinear boundary value problems with Riemann-Liouville and Caputo fractional derivatives together with the homogeneous Dirichlet condition. We {investigate} the well-posedness and also the regularity of the corresponding weak solutions. Then, we develop a Galerkin finite element approach {\color{blue}for} the numerical approximation of the weak formulations and {drive a prior…
A unified construction of the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements of any order $k$ is developed on any shape of polytope in $\mathbb R^n$ with constraints $m\leq n$ and $k\geq m$. As a vital tool in the construction, a generalized Green's identity for $H^m$ inner product is derived. The $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are then used to approximate solutions of the $m$-harmonic equation. After establishing a bound on the jump related to the weak continuity, the optimal error estimate of the canonical interpolation, and the norm equivalence of the stabilization term, the optimal erro…
Sparse spectral methods for solving partial differential equations have been derived in recent years using hierarchies of classical orthogonal polynomials on intervals, disks, and triangles. In this work we extend this methodology to a hierarchy of non-classical orthogonal polynomials on disk slices (e.g. a half-disk) and trapeziums. This builds on the observation that sparsity is guaranteed due to the boundary being defined by an algebraic curve, and that the entries of partial differential operators can be determined using formulae in terms of (non-classical) univariate orthogonal polynomial…
In this paper, we present numerical procedures to compute solutions of partial differential equations posed on fractals. In particular, we consider the strong form of the equation using standard graph Laplacian matrices and also weak forms of the equation derived using standard length or area measure on a discrete approximation of the fractal set. We then introduce a numerical procedure to normalize the obtained diffusions, that is, a way to compute the renormalization constant needed in the definitions of the actual partial differential equation on the fractal set. A particular case that is s…
The Virtual Element Method is well suited to the formulation of arbitrarily regular Galerkin approximations of elliptic partial differential equations of order $2p_1$, for any integer $p_1\geq 1$. In fact, the virtual element paradigm provides a very effective design framework for conforming, finite dimensional subspaces of $H^{p_2}(Ω)$, $Ω$ being the computational domain and $p_2\geq p_1$ another suitable integer number. In this study, we first present an abstract setting for such highly regular approximations and discuss the mathematical details of how we can build conforming approximation s…
In this paper we consider the numerical approximation of a general second order semi-linear parabolic partial differential equation. Equations of this type arise in many contexts, such as transport in porous media. Using finite element method for space discretization and the exponential Rosenbrock-Euler method for time discretization, we provide a rigorous convergence proof in space and time under only the standard Lipschitz condition of the nonlinear part for both smooth and nonsmooth initial solution. This is in contrast to very restrictive assumptions made in the literature, where the autho…
These lecture notes for a graduate course present an introduction to the mathematical theory of finite element methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Covered are conforming and nonconforming (in particular, discontinuous Galerkin and mixed methods) for elliptic partial differential equations and Galerkin methods for parabolic equations.

In this paper we present a new Eulerian finite element method for the discretization of scalar partial differential equations on evolving surfaces. In this method we use the restriction of standard space-time finite element spaces on a fixed bulk mesh to the space-time surface. The structure of the method is such that it naturally fits to a level set representation of the evolving surface. The higher order version of the method is based on a space-time variant of a mesh deformation that has been developed in the literature for stationary surfaces. The discretization method that we present is o…
The Virtual Element Method (VEM) is a very effective framework to design numerical approximations with high global regularity to the solutions of elliptic partial differential equations. In this paper, we review the construction of such approximations for an elliptic problem of order $p_1$ using conforming, finite dimensional subspaces of $ H^{p_2}(Ω)$, where $p_1$ and $p_2$ are two integer numbers such that $p_2 \geq p_1 \geq 1$ and $Ω\in R^2$ is the computational domain. An abstract convergence result is presented in a suitably defined energy norm. The space formulation and major aspects suc…
The $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements of any order $k$ on any shape of polytope in $\mathbb R^n$ with constraints $m>n$ and $k\geq m$ are constructed in a universal way. A generalized Green's identity for $H^m$ inner product with $m>n$ is derived, which is essential to devise the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements. By means of the local $H^m$ projection and a stabilization term using only the boundary degrees of freedom, the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are proposed to approximate solutions of the $m$-harmonic equation. The norm equivalence of the stabilization on the kerne…
We consider a fractional order viscoelasticity problem modelled by a power-law type stress relaxation function. This viscoelastic problem is a Volterra integral equation of the second kind with a weakly singular kernel where the convolution integral corresponds to fractional order differentiation/integration. We use a spatial finite element method and a finite difference scheme in time. Due to the weak singularity, fractional order integration in time is managed approximately by linear interpolation so that we can formulate a fully discrete problem. In this paper, we present a stability bound …
We develop a general framework for construction and analysis of discrete extension operators with application to unfitted finite element approximation of partial differential equations. In unfitted methods so called cut elements intersected by the boundary occur and these elements must in general by stabilized in some way. Discrete extension operators provides such a stabilization by modification of the finite element space close to the boundary. More precisely, the finite element space is extended from the stable interior elements over the boundary in a stable way which also guarantees optima…
The structural analysis, i.e., the investigation of the differential-algebraic nature, of circuits containing simple elements, i.e., resistances, inductances and capacitances is well established. However, nowadays circuits contain all sorts of elements, e.g. behavioral models or partial differential equations stemming from refined device modelling. This paper proposes the definition of generalized circuit elements which may for example contain additional internal degrees of freedom, such that those elements still behave structurally like resistances, inductances and capacitances. Several compl…
