We report on fluctuations in the electron system, Cooper pairs and quasiparticles, of a superconducting aluminium film. The superconductor is exposed to pair-breaking photons (1.54 THz), which are coupled through an antenna. The change in the complex conductivity of the superconductor upon a change in the quasiparticle number is read out by a microwave resonator. A large range in radiation power can be chosen by carefully filtering the radiation from a blackbody source. We identify two regimes. At high radiation power, fluctuations in the electron system caused by the random arrival rate of the photons are resolved, giving a straightforward measure of the optical efficiency (48%). At low radiation power fluctuations are dominated by excess quasiparticles, the number of which is measured through their recombination lifetime.
We report the observation of half-integer magnetic flux quantization in mesoscopic rings of superconducting $β$-Bi$_2$Pd thin films. The half-quantum fluxoid manifests itself as a $π$ phase shift in the quantum oscillation of the critical temperature. This result verifies unconventional superconductivity of $β$-Bi$_2$Pd, in accord with the expectation of a topological superconductor. We also discuss the strong indication that $β$-Bi$_2$Pd is a spin-triplet superconductor.
Ferromagnetism and superconductivity are most fundamental phenomena in condensed matter physics. Entailing opposite spin orders, they share an important conceptual similarity: Disturbances in magnetic ordering in magnetic materials can propagate in the form of spin waves (magnons) while magnetic fields penetrate superconductors as a lattice of magnetic flux quanta (fluxons). Despite a rich choice of wave and quantum phenomena predicted, magnon-fluxon coupling has not been observed experimentally so far. Here, we clearly evidence the interaction of spin waves with a flux lattice in ferromagnet/…
Multi-gap superconductors exhibit interesting properties. In an $N$-gap superconductor, we have in general $U(1)^N$ phase invariance. This multiple-phase invariance is partially or totally spontaneously broken in a superconductor. The Nambu-Goldstone modes, as well as Higgs modes, are important and will play an important role in multi-condensate superconductors. The additional phase invariance leads to a new quantum phase, with help of frustrated Josephson effects, such as the time-reversal symmetry breaking, the emergence of massless modes and fractionally quantized-flux vortices. There is a …
Employing the standard worldline-vortex mapping, we conclude that at the critical temperature, superconductors demonstrate the magneto-halon effect with respect to the quantized net magnetic flux generated by a solenoid inserted into the system. The effect is a direct counterpart of the recently revealed halon effect in terms of the quantized particle charge of a static impurity in the two-dimensional U(1) quantum-critical environment. The flux-loop model (a.k.a. frozen lattice superconductor) with a quasi-solenoid perturbation proves to be the model of choice for qualitative and quantitative …
We report an unusual enhancement of the magnetic induction in single crystals of the magnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ , highlighting the interplay between superconducting and magnetic subsystems in this material. Contrary to the conventional Meissner expulsion of magnetic flux below the superconducting transition temperature, we observe a substantial boost of the magnetic flux density upon approaching the magnetic transition temperature, Tm. Direct imaging of the flux evolution with a magneto-optical technique, shows that the magnetic subsystem serves as an internal magnetic flux pump,…
We develop a theory of conductivity of type-II superconductors in the flux flow regime taking into account random spatial fluctuations of the system parameters, such as the gap magnitude $Δ$(r) and the diffusion coefficient D(r). We find a contribution to the conductivity that is proportional to the inelastic relaxation time $τ_{in}$, which is much longer than the elastic relaxation time. This new contribution is due to Debye-type relaxation, and it can be much larger than the conventional flux flow conductivity due to Bardeen and Stephen. The new contribution is expected to dominate in clean …
In chiral $p$-wave superconductors, magnetic flux patterns may appear spontaneously when translational symmetry is broken such as at surfaces, domain walls, or impurities. However, in the candidate material Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ no direct signs of such magnetic fields have been detected experimentally. In this paper, the flux pattern at the edge of a disk-shaped sample is examined using the phenomenological Ginzburg Landau approach. The detailed shape of the flux pattern, including self-screening, is computed numerically for different surface types by systematically scanning a range of boundary condit…
The conductivity of vortex lattices in multiband superconductors with high concentration of impurities is calculated based on microscopic kinetic theory. Both the limits of high and low fields are considered, when the magnetic induction is close to or much smaller than the critical field strength $H_{c2}$, respectively. It is shown that in contrast to single-band superconductors the resistive properties are not universal but depend on the pairing constants and ratios of diffusivities in different bands. The low-field magneto-resistance can strongly exceed Bardeen-Stephen estimation in a quanti…
A prime category of superconducting materials in which to look for spin-triplet pairing and topological superconductivity are superconductors without inversion symmetry. It is predicted that the breaking of parity symmetry gives rise to an admixture of spin-singlet / spin-triplet pairing states; a triplet pairing component, being substantial, seems all but guaranteed. However, the experimental confirmation of pair mixing in any particular material remains elusive. In this work, we perform phase-sensitive experiment to examine the pairing state of noncentrosymmetric superconductor $α-$BiPd. The…
Time-reversal symmetry (TRS) may be broken in superconductors with three or more condensates interacting repulsively, yielding two degenerate states specified by chirality of gap functions. We consider a loop of such superconductor with two halves occupied by the two states with opposite chiralities. Fractional flux plateaus are found in magnetization curve associated with free-energy minima, where the two domain walls between the two halves accommodate different inter-component phase kinks leading to finite winding numbers in a part of the whole condensates around the loop. Fractional flux pl…
The accurate understanding of flux dynamics is essential for the design and operation of superconducting circuits. The time evolution of flux-density distribution in an NbN strip by the transport current was observed using high-speed magneto-optical microscopy. It was determined that even for the dynamic penetration and exclusion of vortices under the transport current, the surface barrier is essential. This feature is important for the correct understanding of the complex behavior of state-of-the-art superconducting devices.
We have studied theoretically the space-time evolution of the thermal and electromagnetic perturbation in a superconductor with the linear current-voltage characteristic in the flux flow regime. On the basis of a linear analysis of a set of differential equations describing small perturbations of temperature and magnetic field we will found that under some conditions an instability may occur in the sample, which takes into account an inertial properties of the vortices mas
