A layered antiferromagnetic superconductor in the mixed state may posses magnetic domains created along the Josephson vortices. This may happen when an external magnetic field is strong enough to flip over magnetic moments, lying in the phase core of the Josephson vortex, from their ground state configuration. The formation of the domain structure of the vortices modifies the surface energy barrier of the superconductor. During this process the entrance of the flux is stopped and a newly created state exhibits perfect shielding. Such behavior should be visible as a plateau on the dependence of flux density as a function of the external magnetic field. The end of the plateau determines the critical field, which we call the second critical field for flux penetration.
The electromagnetic response of a system with two planes per unit cell involves, in addition to the usual intraband contribution, an added interband term. These transitions affect the temperature dependence and the magnitude of the zero temperature c-axis penetration depth. When the interplane hopping is sufficiently small, the interband transitions dominate the low temperature behaviour of the penetration depth which then does not reflect the linear temperature dependence of the intraband term and in comparison becomes quite flat even for a d-wave gap. It is in this regime that the pseudogap …
The influence of antiferromagnetic order on the mixed state of a superconductor may result in creation of spin-flop domains along vortices. This may happen when an external magnetic field is strong enough to flip over magnetic moments in the vortex core from their ground state configuration. The formation of domain structure causes modification of the surface energy barrier, and creation of the new state in which magnetic flux density is independent of the applied field. The modified surface energy barrier has been calculated for parameters of the antiferromagnetic superconductor DyMo$_{6}$S$_…
We present an analysis of previously published measurements of the London penetration depth of layered organic superconductors. The predictions of the BCS theory of superconductivity are shown to disagree with the measured zero temperature, in plane, London penetration depth by up to two orders of magnitude. We find that fluctuations in the phase of the superconducting order parameter do not determine the superconducting critical temperature as the critical temperature predicted for a Kosterlitz--Thouless transition is more than an order of magnitude greater than is found experimentally for so…
Effective magnetic penetration depth and microwave surface impedance are derived for anisotropic layered superconductors in the shape of spheres and long cylinders, where the external magnetic field is applied in the plane of the highly conducting layers to induce out-of-plane screening currents. The results are extended by analytic continuation to highly anisotropic conductors and to lossy superconductors at high frequency. The electrodynamics for the general case of a superconductor or metal with arbitrary anisotropy are presented. The treatment is then specialized to layered materials with …
The paper reviews a concept of induced spin-flop domain inside vortices in an antiferromagnetic superconductor. Such phenomenon may occur when an external magnetic field is strong enough to flip over magnetic moments in the core of the vortex from their ground state configuration. The formation of the domain structure inside vortices modifies the surface energy barrier of the superconductor. During this process the entrance of the flux is stopped and a newly created state exhibits perfect shielding. Such behavior should be visible as a plateau on the dependence of flux density as a function of…
Layered organic superconductors are on the verge of the Mott insulator. We use Gutzwiller variational method to study a Hubbard model including a spin exchange coupling term. The ground state is found to be a Gossamer superconductor at small on-site Coulomb repulsion U and an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at large U, separated by a first order phase transition. Our theory is qualitatively consistent with major experiments reported in organic superconductors.
The influence of the antiferromagnetic order on the superconductor in the mixed state results in creation of spin-flop domains along the cores of the vortex lines. It is shown that this phenomenon makes possible crossover from quantum creep regime to thermal one, and vice versa, at constant temperature. To do this one needs to simply change the intensity or the direction of applied magnetic field in the basal ${\bf ab}$ plane of layered structure.
The intrinsic pinning in high-temperature superconductor with long range antiferromagnetic order of rare-earth ions confined to the isolating planes is described. The interaction of antiferromagnetic and superconducting subsystems in the mixed state may lead to the creation of spin-flop domain along the vortex core. It is shown that the behavior of several physical quantities such as magnetization, activation energy, current-voltage characteristic and flux creep changes when the direction of the external field changes in the basal a-b plane. It is also shown that the decay of the trapped flux …
The magnetic penetration depth as a function of temperature in Bi4O4S3 was studied by muon-spin-spectroscopy measurements. The superfluid density of Bi4O4S3 is found to be very low. The dependence of penetration depth on temperature possibly suggests the existence of two s-wave type energy gaps with the zero-temperature values of 0.93(3) and 0.09(4) meV. The upturn in the temperature dependence of the upper critical field close to Tc further supports multi-gap superconductivity in Bi4O4S3. The presence of two superconducting energy gaps is consistent with theoretical and other experimental stu…
We report on magnetic characteristics in four-layered high-T_c superconductors Ba_2Ca_3Cu_4O_8(F_yO_{1-y})_2 with apical fluorine through Cu- and F-NMR measurements. The substitution of oxygen for fluorine at the apical site increases the carrier density (N_h) and T_c from 55 K up to 102 K. The NMR measurements reveal that antiferromagnetic order, which can uniformly coexist with superconductivity, exists up to N_h = 0.15, which is somewhat smaller than N_h = 0.17 being the quantum critical point (QCP) for five-layered compounds. The fact that the QCP for the four-layered compounds moves to a …
Recent ESR data shows rotation of the antiferromagnetic (AF) easy axis in lightly doped layered cuprates upon lowering the temperature. We account for the ESR data and show that it has significant implications on spin and charge ordering according to the following scenario: In the high temperature phase AF domain walls coincide with (110) twin boundaries of an orthorhombic phase. A magnetic field leads to annihilation of neighboring domain walls resulting in antiphase boundaries. The latter are spin carriers, form ferromagnetic lines and may become charged in the doped system. However, hole or…
We report on measurements of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth of a very high quality single crystal of nonmagnetic superconductor LaPt3Si without inversion symmetry. The results are compared with those previously reported for the isostructural antiferromagnetic superconductor CePt3Si. At low temperatures, the penetration depth follows a BCS exponential behavior that implies an isotropic energy gap in LaPt3Si, in contrast to a linear response that indicates line nodes in CePt3Si. These line nodes have been argued to be protected by symmetry or accidentally generated …
The proximity of antiferromagnetic order in high-temperature superconducting materials is considered a possible clue to the electronic excitations which form superconducting pairs. Here we study the transverse and longitudinal spin excitation spectrum in a one-band model in the pure spin density wave (SDW) state and in the coexistence state of SDW and the superconductivity. We start from a Stoner insulator and study the evolution of the spectrum with doping, including distinct situations with only hole pockets, with only electron pockets and with pockets of both types. In addition to the usual…
We report on generic trends in the behavior of the interlayer penetration depth $λ_c$ of several different classes of quasi two-dimensional superconductors including high-T$_c$ cuprates, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, transition metal dichalcogenides and organic materials of the $(BEDT-TTF)_2X$ - series. Analysis of these trends reveals two distinct patterns in the scaling between the values of $λ_c$ and the magnitude of the c-axis DC conductivity $σ_{DC}$: one realized in the systems with a ground state formed out of well defined quasiparticles and the other seen in systems in which the quasiparticles are no…
The electronic and magnetic properties of BaTi$_{2}$As$_{2}$O have been investigated using both the first-principles and analytical methods. The full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave calculations show that the most stable state is a site-selective antiferromagnetic (AFM) metal with a $\text{2}\times \text{1}\times \text{1}$ magnetic unit cell containing two nonmagnetic Ti atoms and two other Ti atoms with antiparallel moments. Further analysis to Fermi surface and spin susceptibility shows that the site-selective AFM ground state is driven by the Fermi surface nesting and the Coulomb …
A simplified model of c axis transport in the high T_c superconductors is presented. Expressions are found for the c axis optical conductivity, the d.c. resistivity, and the c axis penetration depth. Within the framework of this model, the pseudogap in the optical conductivity arises naturally as a result of the layered band structure of the high T_c materials. We discuss the occurence of the pseudogap in terms of three parameters: a band gap Delta_{ps}, a temperature dependent scattering rate Gamma(T), and the strength of the interlayer coupling t_{perp}. We are also able to find analytic exp…
We report measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth $Δλ$(T) in single crystals of ErNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C down to $\sim$0.1 K using a tunnel-diode based, self-inductive technique at 21 MHz. We observe four features: (1) a slight dip in $Δλ$(T) at the N$\acute{e}$el temperature $T_{N}$ = 6.0 K, (2) a peak at $T_{WFM}$ = 2.3 K, where a weak ferromagnetic component sets in, (3) another maximum at 0.45 K, and (4) a final broad drop down to 0.1 K. Converting to superfluid density $ρ_{s}$, we see that the antiferromagnetic order at 6 K only slightly depresses superconductivity. We seek to e…
We have magnetically imaged interlayer Josephson vortices emerging from an ac face of single crystals of the single layer cuprate high-Tc superconductor (Hg,Cu)Ba2CuO4+d. These images provide a direct measurement of the c-axis penetration depth of about 10 microns. This length is a factor of 10 longer than predicted by the interlayer tunneling model for the mechanism of superconductivity in layered compounds, indicating that the condensation energy available through this mechanism is 100 times smaller than is required for superconductivity.
In the mixed state of layered superconductor the antiferromagnetic order of magnetic ions can create the spin-flop domains along the phase cores of the Josephson vortices. The paper discusses how this feature affects the macroscopic quantum tunnelling of the Josephson vortices. It is shown that the action and hence the activation energy is rendered temperature dependent so that the quantum tunnelling rate becomes temperature dependent below the crossover temperature. It is also shown that in constant temperature thermal or quantum creep may occur, depending on the direction or intensity of the…
We report on the observation of high-T_c superconductivity (SC) emerging with the background of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in the five-layered cuprate Ba_2Ca_4Cu_5O_10(F,O)_2 through 19F-NMR and zero-field Cu-NMR studies. The measurements of spectrum and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates 19(1/T_1) of 19F-NMR give convincing evidence for the AFM order taking place below T_N = 175 K and for the onset of SC below T_c = 52 K, hence both coexisting. The zero-field Cu-NMR study has revealed that AFM moments at Cu sites are 0.14 mu_B at outer CuO_2 layers and 0.20 mu_B at inner ones. We rem…
I derive an approximate analytic solution for the in-plane vortex (fluxon) in layered superconductors and stacked Josephson junctions (SJJ's) with arbitrary number of layers. The validity of the solution is verified by numerical simulation. It is shown that in SJJ's with large number of thin layers, phase/current and magnetic field of the fluxon are decoupled from each other. The variation of phase/current is confined within the Josephson penetration depth, $λ_J$, along the layers, while magnetic field decays at the effective London penetration depth, $λ_c \gg λ_J$. For comparison with real hi…
In an ultrasonic experiment, we have investigated the temperature profile of the velocity of longitudinal elastic waves propagating along a direction perpendicular to the layers in the organic superconductors kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2X, X = Cu(SCN)_2 and Cu[N(CN)_2]Br. Although a small decrease of the velocity is observed at the superconducting transition, the most anomalous behavior is obtained in the normal metallic state where an important softening is identified around 40-50 K. In order to characterize the origin of this anomaly, we have studied its behavior under the application of hydrostatic p…
The Josephson plasma resonance in layered superconductors with alternating critical current densities is investigated in a low perpendicular magnetic field. In the vortex solid phase the current densities and the squared bare plasma frequencies decrease linearly with the magnetic field. Taking into account the coupling due to charge fluctuations on the layers, we extract from recent optical data for SmLa_{1-x} Sr_x CuO_{4-delta} the Josephson penetration length lambda_{ab} approximately 1100 A parallel to the layers at T=10 K.
We have studied the newly found superconductor compound LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs through the first-principles density functional theory calculations. We find that the parent compound LaOFeAs is a quasi-2-dimensional antiferromgnetic semimetal with most carriers being electrons and with a magnetic moment of $2.3μ_B$ located around each Fe atom on the Fe-Fe square lattice. Furthermore this is a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin density wave due to the Fermi surface nesting, which is robust against the F-doping. The observed superconduction happens on the Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic layer, suggesting a…
In the recent Comment [V. M. Krasnov, Phys. Rev. B vol. 65, 096503 (2002)], the author claims to have ''disproved'' our theoretical conclusion [S. V. Kuplevakhsky, Phys. Rev. B vol. 60, 7496 (1999); Phys. Rev. B vol. 63, 054508 (2001)] that isolated Josephson vortices in layered superconductors and stacked junctions are absolutely unstable in the presence of an external field. We show that this claim has no grounds. Moreover, by solving an appropriate boundary value problem, we obtain a complete classification of soliton (vortex) solutions to coupled static sine-Gordon equations. We also discu…
The complex surface impedance of a number of GdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals has been measured at 10, 15 and 21 GHz using a cavity perturbation technique. At low temperatures a marked increase in the effective penetration depth and surface resistance is observed associated with the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic alignment of the Gd spins. The effective penetration depth has a sharp change in slope at the Néel temperature, $T_N$, and the surface resistance peaks at a frequency dependent temperature below 3K. The observed temperature and frequency dependence can be described by a mod…
We provide a set of computational experiments based on \textit{ab initio} calculations to elucidate whether a cuprate-like antiferromagnetic insulating state can be present in the phase diagram of the low-valence layered nickelate family (R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$, R= rare-earth, $n=1-\infty$) in proximity to half-filling. It is well established that at $d^9$ filling the infinite-layer ($n=\infty$) nickelate is metallic, in contrast to cuprates wherein an antiferromagnetic insulator is expected. We show that for the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) reduced phases of the series (finite $n$) an antiferrom…
Superconducting ($S$) thin film superlattices composed of Nb and a normal metal spacer ($N$) have been extensively utilized in Josephson junctions given their favorable surface roughness compared to Nb films of comparable thickness. In this work, we characterize the London penetration depth and Ginzburg-Landau coherence lengths of $S/N$ superlattices using polarized neutron reflectometry and electrical transport. Despite the normal metal spacer layers being only approximately 8% of the total superlattice thickness, we surprisingly find that the introduction of these thin $N$ spacers between $S…
We report an investigation of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ on single crystals of the layered superconductor Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$, where the crystal structure has quasi-one-dimensional characteristics. A linear temperature dependence of $Δλ(T)$ is observed for $T\ll T_c$, in contrast to the exponential decay of fully gapped superconductors. This indicates the existence of line nodes in the superconducting energy gap. A detailed analysis shows that the normalized superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$, which is converted from $Δλ(T)$, can be well described by a multigap scenario, with nodes in one…
The synthesis, structural and physical properties of iron lanthanide oxypnictide superconductors, L4Fe2As2Te1-xO4 (L = Pr, Sm, Gd), with transition temperature at ~ 25 K are reported. Single crystals have been grown at high pressure using cubic anvil technique. The crystal structure consists of layers of L2O2 tetrahedra separated by alternating layers of chains of Te and of Fe2As2 tetrahedra: -L2O2-Te-L2O2-Fe2As2-L2O2-Te-L2O2- (space group: I4/mmm, a ~ 4.0, c ~ 29.6 Å). Substitution of oxygen by fluorine increases the critical temperature, e.g. in Gd4Fe2As2Te1-xOyF4-y up to 45 K. Magnetic torq…
Application of a tunnel-diode resonator (TDR) technique for studies of the vortex response in magnetic superconductors is described. Operating at very small excitation fields and sufficiently high frequency, TDR was used to probe small-amplitude linear AC response in several types of single crystals where long-range magnetic order coexists with bulk superconductivity. Full local - moment ferromagnetism destroys superconductivity and can coexist with it only in a narrow temperature range ($\sim 0.3$ K). In contrast, weak ferromagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic orders can coexist with bulk su…
We present a local probe study of the magnetic superconductor, ErNi$_2$B$_2$C, using magnetic force microscopy at sub-Kelvin temperatures. ErNi$_2$B$_2$C is an ideal system to explore the effects of concomitant superconductivity and ferromagnetism. At 500 mK, far below the transition to a weakly ferromagnetic state, we directly observe a structured magnetic background on the micrometer scale. We determine spatially resolved absolute values of the magnetic penetration depth $λ$ and study its temperature dependence as the system undergoes magnetic phase transitions from paramagnetic to antiferro…
The anisotropic superconducting properties of a Rb(x)Fe(2-y)Se(2) single crystal with transition temperature 32 K were investigated by means of SQUID and torque magnetometry, probing the effective magnetic penetration depth and the magnetic penetration depth anisotropy. Interestingly, the anisotropy is found to be temperature independent in the superconducting state, but strongly field dependent. This unusual anisotropic behavior, together with a large zero-temperature effective magnetic penetration depth is possibly related to a superconducting state heavily biased by the coexisting antiferro…
The aim of this work is to investigate the temperature dependencies both in CuO2-plane and out-of plane resistivities in electron-doped Nd2-xCexCuO4 for x from 0.135 up to 0.15 in order to analyze the anisotropy of the electrical transport in the process of the evolution from antiferromagnetic (AF) order in underdoped region to superconducting (SC) order in optimally doped region.
The half-Heusler compounds YPdBi and TbPdBi, while having similar band structure, exhibit different magnetic properties. YPdBi is a diamagnet, while TbPdBi shows antiferromagnetic order below 5.5 K. Both are superconductors with T${_c}\approx$1 K for YPdBi and T${_c}\approx$1.75 K for TbPdBi. Such a contrast in properties between these two compounds opens a question about the effects of band structure or magnetic correlations on superconductivity. Using the combination of a tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) and a commercial dilution refrigerator, we measured temperature dependent magnetic penetrat…
In high-transition temperature (high-Tc) copper oxides, it is generally believed that antiferromagnetism plays a fundamental role in the superconducting mechanism because superconductivity occurs when mobile electrons or holes are doped into the antiferromagnetic parent compounds. The recent discovery of superconductivity in the rare-earth (R) iron-based oxide systems [RO1-xFxFeAs] has generated enormous interest because these materials are the first noncopper oxide superconductors with Tc exceeding 50 K. The parent (nonsuperconducting) LaOFeAs material is metallic but shows anomalies near 150…
We examine the Meissner state nonlinear electrodynamic effects on the field and angular dependence of the low temperature penetration depth, $λ$, of superconductors in several kinds of unconventional pairing states, with nodes or deep minima (``quasinodes'') in the energy gap. Our calculations are prompted by the fact that, for typical unconventional superconducting material parameters, the predicted size of these effects for $λ$ exceeds the available experimental precision for this quantity by a much larger factor than for others. We obtain expressions for the nonlinear component of the penet…
We report on generic trends in the behavior of the interlayer penetration depth $λ_c$ of several different classes of quasi two-dimensional superconductors including cuprates, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, transition metal dichalcogenides and organic materials of the $(BEDT-TTF)_2X$-series. Analysis of these trends reveals two distinct patterns in the scaling between the values of $λ_c$ and the magnitude of the DC conductivity: one realized in the systems with a Fermi liquid (FL) ground state and the other seen in systems with a marked deviation from the FL response. The latter pattern is found primarily in …
Critical temperature reduction $ΔT_c$ is considered for a thin film of a layered superconductor (S) with a rough surface covered by a thick layer of a normal metal (N). The roughness of the SN interface increases the penetration of electrons from the normal metal into the superconductor and leads to an enhancement of the proximity effect. The value of $ΔT_c$ induced by the roughness of the SN interface can be much higher than $ΔT_c$ for a film with a plain surface for an extremely anisotropic layered superconductor with the coherence lengths $ξ_a,ξ_b\ggξ_c$.
The phase diagram of the layered organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl has been accurately measured from a combination of $^{1}$H NMR and AC susceptibility techniques under helium gas pressure. The domains of stability of antiferromagnetic and superconducting long-range orders in the pressure {\it vs} temperature plane have been determined. Both phases overlap through a first-order boundary that separates two regions of inhomogeneous phase coexistence. The boundary curve is found to merge with another first order line related to the metal-insulator transition in the paramagnet…
Ru based perovskites demonstrate an amazing richness in their magnetic properties, including 3D and quasi-2D ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, and unconventional superconductivity. Tendency to ferromagnetism, stemming from the unusually large involvement of O in magnetism in ruthenates, leads to ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in Sr2RuO4 and eventually to p-wave superconductivity. A related compound Ca2RuO4 was measured to be antiferromagnetic, suggesting a possibility of antiferromagnetic fluctuations in Sr2RuO4 as well. Here we report first principles calculations that demonstrate that in …
Magnetotransport theory of layered superconductors in the flux flow steady state is revisited. Longstanding controversies concerning observed Hall sign reversals are resolved. The conductivity separates into a Bardeen-Stephen vortex core contribution, and a Hall conductivity due to moving vortex charge. This charge, which is responsible for Hall anomaly, diverges logarithmically at weak magnetic field. Its values can be extracted from magetoresistivity data by extrapolation of vortex core Hall angle from the normal phase. Hall anomalies in YBCO, BSCCO, and NCCO data are consistent with theoret…
We have revisited the magnetic penetration depth data on the electron-doped cuprates Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-y) and La(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-y). It is proposed that the transition between the nodal-gap-like and nodeless-gap-like behaviors upon electron-doping [see, e.g., M. Kim et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 87001 (2003)] can be due to a scattering of the quasiparticles in the d-wave superconducting state by an incipient or weak antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave. This conjecture is supported by the inelastic neutron scattering and angle-resolved photoemission experiments on some closely related electron-do…
From the first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of compound Na$_2$Ti$_2$Pn$_2$O (Pn = As or Sb). We find that in the ground state Na$_2$Ti$_2$As$_2$O is a blocked checkerboard antiferromagnetic semiconductor with a small band gap of about 0.15 eV, in contrast, Na$_2$Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O is a bi-collinear antiferromagnetic semimetal, both with a small moment of about 0.5$μ_B$ around each Ti atom. We show that there is a strong Fermi surface nesting in Na$_2$Ti$_2$Pn$_2$O. And we verify that the blocked checkerboard and bi-collinear antiferromagnetic state…
I study the effect of quantum and thermal phase fluctuations on the in-plane and c-axis superfluid stiffness of layered d-wave superconductors. First, I show that quantum phase fluctuations in the superconductor can be damped in the presence of external screening of Coulomb interactions, and suggest an experiment to test the importance of these fluctuations, by placing a metal in close proximity to the superconductor to induce such screening. Second, I show that a combination of quantum phase fluctuations and the linear temperature dependence of the in-plane superfluid stiffness leads to a lin…
We investigate the influence of columnar defects in layered superconductors on the thermally activated penetration of pancake vortices through the surface barrier. Columnar defects, located near the surface, facilitate penetration of vortices through the surface barrier, by creating ``weak spots'', through which pancakes can penetrate into the superconductor. Penetration of a pancake mediated by an isolated column, located near the surface, is a two-stage process involving hopping from the surface to the column and the detachment from the column into the bulk; each stage is controlled by its o…
The layered bismuth oxy-sulfide materials, which are structurally related to the Fe-pnictides/chalcogenides and cuprates superconductors, have brought substantial attention for understanding the physics of reduced dimensional superconductors. We have examined the pairing symmetry of recently discovered BiCh$_2$-based superconductor, La$_\mathrm{1-x}$Ce$_\mathrm{x}$OBiSSe with $x$ = 0.3, through transverse field (TF) muon spin rotation measurement, in addition we present the results of magnetization, resistivity and zero field (ZF) muon spin relaxation measurements. Bulk superconductivity has b…
Based on the effective four-band model we analyze the spin response in the normal and superconducting states of the Fe-pnictide superconductors. While the normal state spin excitations are dominated by the continuum of the interorbital antiferromagnetic fluctuations and the intraband spin density wave fluctuations, the unconventional superconductivity yields different feedback. The resonance peak in form of the well-defined spin exciton occurs {\it only} for the interband scattering at the antiferromagnetic momentum ${\bf Q}_{AFM}$ for the $s_\pm$ (extended s-wave) superconducting order parame…
We have studied the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of 51V nuclei in the superconductor/ferromagnet thin film heterostructures Ni/V/Ni and Pd{1-x}Fe{x}/V/Pd{1-x}Fe{x} in the normaland superconducting state. Whereas the position and shape of the NMR line in the normal state for the trilayers is identical to that observed in a single V-layer, in the superconducting state the line shape definitely changes, developing a systematic distortion of the high-field wing of the resonance line. We consider this as the first experimental evidence for the penetration of ferromagnetism into the superconduct…
We investigate the superheating fields $H_{sh}$ of semi-infinite superconductors and layered superconductors in the diffusive limit by using the well-established quasiclassical Green's function formalism of the BCS theory. The coupled Maxwell-Usadel equations are self-consistently solved to obtain the spatial distributions of the magnetic field, screening current density, penetration depth, and pair potential. We find the superheating field of a semi-infinite superconductor in the diffusive limit is given by $H_{sh} = 0.795 H_{c0}$ at the temperature $T \to 0$. Here $H_{c0}$ is the thermodynam…
We report muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and magnetization measurements, together with synthesis and characterization, of the Li-intercalated layered superconductors Li$_{x}$HfNCl and Li$_{x}$ZrNCl with/without co-intercalation of THF (tetrahydrofuran) or PC (propylene carbonate). The 3-dimensional (3-d) superfluid density $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superconducting carrier density / effective mass), as well as the two dimensional superfluid density $n_{s2d}/m^{*}_{ab}$ (2-dimensional (2-d) area density of superconducting carriers / ab-plane effective mass), have been derived from the $μ$SR results of the ma…
Based on a microscopic model, we study the interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in a multi-layered system, where two superconductors are separated by an antiferromagnetic region. Within a self-consistent mean-field theory, this system is solved numerically. We find that the antiferromagnetism in the middle layers profoundly affects the supercurrent flowing across the junction, while the phase difference across the junction influences the development of antiferromagnetism in the middle layers. This study may not only shed new light on the mechanism for high-$T_{c}$ superco…
Strontium intercalation between van der Waals bonded layers of topological insulator Bi2Se3 is found to induce superconductivity with a maximum Tc of 2.9 K. Transport measurement on single crystal of optimally doped sample Sr0.1Bi2Se3 shows weak anisotropy (1.5) and upper critical field Hc2(0) equals to 2.1 T for magnetic field applied per-pendicular to c -axis of the sample. The Ginzburg-Landau coherence lengths are Xi-ab = 15.3 Å and Xi_c = 10.2 Å. The lower critical field and zero temperature penetration depth Lambda(0) are estimated to be 0.35 mT and 1550 nm respectively. Hall and Seebeck …
I show that for a κ-type organic (BEDT-TTF)_2-X molecular crystal, a superconducting state with T_c ~ 10 K and gap nodes on the Fermi surface can be caused by short-ranged antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Using a two-band description for the anti-bonding orbitals on a BEDT-TTF dimer of the κ-type salt, and an intermediate local Coulomb repulsion between two holes on one dimer, the magnetic interaction and the superconducting gap-function are determined self consistently within the fluctuation exchange approximation. The pairing interaction is predominantly caused by inter-band coupling and…
Coexistence of phases, characterized by different electronic degrees of freedom, commonly occurs in layered superconductors. Among them, alkaline intercalated chalcogenides are model systems showing microscale coexistence of paramagnetic (PAR) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases, however, temporal behavior of different phases is still unknown. Here, we report the first visualization of the atomic motion in the granular phase of K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. Unlike the PAR phase, the AFM texture reveals an intermittent dynamics with avalanches as in martens…
The renormalization of the magnetic field penetration depth $λ$ owing to the electron-electron correlation is discussed with its application to high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates. The formula for the current carried by quasiparticle with the Umklapp scattering is derived, on the basis of which we investigate how the value of $λ^{-2}$ deviates from that of $n/m^*$ where $n$ and $m^*$ are the carrier density and the effective mass respectively. Although this deviation is small in the case of weak momentum dependence of the vertex, this is large and negative owing to the non-negligible value of the backfl…
We report on the phase diagram for charge-stripe order in La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4), determined by neutron and x-ray scattering studies and resistivity measurements. From an analysis of the in-plane resistivity motivated by recent nuclear-quadrupole-resonance studies, we conclude that the transition temperature for local charge ordering decreases monotonically with x, and hence that local antiferromagnetic order is uniquely correlated with the anomalous depression of superconductivity at x = 1/8. This result is consistent with theories in which superconductivity depends on the existence of c…
Recent high-precision measurements employing different experimental techniques have unveiled an anomalous peak in the doping dependence of the London penetration depth which is accompanied by anomalies in the heat capacity in iron-pnictide superconductors at the optimal composition associated with the hidden antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. We argue that finite temperature effects can be a cause of observed features. Specifically we show that quantum critical magnetic fluctuations under superconducting dome can give rise to a nodal-like temperature dependence of both specific heat and…
