The synthesis, structural and physical properties of iron lanthanide oxypnictide superconductors, L4Fe2As2Te1-xO4 (L = Pr, Sm, Gd), with transition temperature at ~ 25 K are reported. Single crystals have been grown at high pressure using cubic anvil technique. The crystal structure consists of layers of L2O2 tetrahedra separated by alternating layers of chains of Te and of Fe2As2 tetrahedra: -L2O2-Te-L2O2-Fe2As2-L2O2-Te-L2O2- (space group: I4/mmm, a ~ 4.0, c ~ 29.6 Å). Substitution of oxygen by fluorine increases the critical temperature, e.g. in Gd4Fe2As2Te1-xOyF4-y up to 45 K. Magnetic torque measurements reveal an anisotropy of the penetration depths of ~31.
We applied $ab$ $initio$ phonon analysis to layered titanium-oxypnictides, Na$_2$Ti$_2Pn_2$O ($Pn$ = As, Sb), and found a clear contrast between the cases with lighter/heavier pnictogen in comparisons with experiments. The result completely explains the experimental structure, $C$2/$m$ for $Pn$ = As, within the conventional electron-phonon framework, while there arise discrepancies when the pnictogen gets heavier, being in the same trend for the BaTi$_2Pn_2$O ($Pn$ = As, Sb, Bi) case. The fact implies a systematic dependence on pnictogen to tune the mechanism of the phase transition and superc…
We successfully synthesized new layered iron oxypnictide Sr2CrO2(FeAs)2 by solid-state-reaction techniques. This is the first report on the Fe-substituted Sr2Mn3As2O2-type oxypnictides to our knowledge. A pellet of stoichiometric mixtures of SrO, Cr and FeAs wrapped with tantalum foil was sintered at 900°C for 96 h. Results of x-ray diffraction measurement and Rietveld refinements show that the structure of the sample belongs to the space group of I4/mmm with the lattice constants of a = 3.9948(1) Å and c = 18.447(1) Å. Temperature dependence of the resistivity for Sr2CrO2(FeAs)2 shows semicon…
Theoretical calculations under the scheme of WIEN2k computer package had been performed on the pristine compound LaOFeAs, as well as on LaO1-xFxFeAs. One factor crucial to the manifestation of superconductivity seems to be fluorine doping; hence we search for its effect. Paying close attention to Fe d-orbitals upon doping of F by O, at first, Fe d-orbitals have dz2 symmetry, changing gradually to something akin to dx2-y2 which seems more prone to conductivity than the former one. This issue agree with the accepted results happened in the copper-based high-temperature superconductors.
A new layered oxypnictide (Fe2P2)(Sr4Sc2O6) have been synthesized by solid-state reaction. This material has an alternating layer stacking structure of anti-fluorite Fe2P2 and perovskite-based Sr4Sc2O6 oxide layers. Space group of the material is P4/nmm and lattice constants a and c are 4.016 A and 15.543 A, respectively. The interlayer Fe-Fe distance corresponding to the c-axis length is the longest ever reported in the iron-based oxypnictide systems. In both magnetization and resistivity measurements, the present compound exhibited superconductivity below 17 K, which is much higher than that…
We report single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements on Na$_2$Ti$_{2}Pn_{2}$O ($Pn$ = As, Sb) which reveal a charge superstructure that appears below the density wave transitions previously observed in bulk data. From symmetry-constrained structure refinements we establish that the associated distortion mode can be described by two propagation vectors, ${\bf q}_{1} = (1/2, 0, l)$ and ${\bf q}_{2} = (0, 1/2, l)$, with $l=0$ (Sb) or $l = 1/2$ (As), and primarily involves in-plane displacements of the Ti atoms perpendicular to the Ti--O bonds. The results provide direct evidence for phonon-ass…
Topological superconductors have long been predicted to host Majorana zero modes which obey non-Abelian statistics and have potential for realizing non-decoherence topological quantum computation. However, material realization of topological superconductors is still a challenge in condensed matter physics. Utilizing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we predict and then unveil the coexistence of topological Dirac semimetal and topological insulator states in the vicinity of Fermi energy ($E_F$) in the titanium-based oxypnictide supercon…
We have successfully prepared the new layered oxypnictides $Sr_4Sc_2O_6M_2As_2$ (M=Fe and Co). They adopt the tetragonal structure, being the same as that of $Sr_4Sc_2O_6Fe_2P_2$. The lattice constants are a=0.4045 nm and c= 0.5802 nm for M=Fe, and a=0.4045 nm and c=1.5695 nm for M=Co, respectively. Their transport and magnetic properties have been systematically studied. The temperature dependence of Hall coefficient and thermoelectric powder for $Sr_4Sc_2O_6Fe_2As_2$ compound show complicated behavior, similar to that of iron-based parent compounds LnOFeAs and $BaFe_2As_2$. It suggests that …
There has been a puzzle between experiments and theoretical predictions on the charge ordering of layered titanium-oxypnictides superconductors. Unconventional mechanisms to explain this discrepancy have been argued so far, even affecting the understanding of superconductivity on the compound. We provide a new theoretical prediction, by which the discrepancy itself is resolved without any complicated unconventional explanation. Phonon dispersions and changes of nesting vectors in Fermi surfaces are clarified to lead to the variety of superlattice structures even for the common crystal structur…
We have discovered new layered oxyarsenides (Fe2As2)(Sr4M2O6) (M = Sc, Cr: M-22426). These materials are isostructural with (Fe2P2)(Sr4Sc2O6), which was found in our previous study. The new compounds are tetragonal with a space group of P4/nmm and consist of the anti-fluorite type FeAs layer and perovskite-type blocking layer. The lattice constants are a = 4.050 A, c = 15.809 A for M = Sc and a = 3.918 A, c = 15.683 A for M = Cr. These compounds have long interlayer Fe-Fe distances corresponding to the c-axis length, the 15.8 A in Sc-22426 is the longest in the iron-based oxypnictide systems. …
Using intrinsic multiple Andreev reflections effect (IMARE) spectroscopy, we studied SnS contacts in the layered oxypnictide superconductors Sm$_{1-x}$Th$_x$OFeAs with various thorium doping and critical temperatures $T_C = 21-54$ K. We observe a scaling between both superconducting gaps and $T_C$. The determined BCS-ratio for the large gap $2Δ_L/k_BT_C = 5.0-5.7$ and its eigen BCS-ratio (in a hypothetical case of zero interband coupling) $2Δ_L/k_BT_C^L = 4.1-4.6$ both exceeding the weak-coupling limit 3.52, and for the small gap $2Δ_S/k_BT_C = 1.2-1.6$ remain nearly constant within all the $T…
The electronic and magnetic properties of cobalt-based layered oxypnictides, LaCoOX (X = P, As), are investigated. LaCoOP and LaCoOAs show metallic type conduction, and the Fermi edge is observed by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Ferromagnetic transitions occur at 43 K for LaCoOP and 66 K for LaCoOAs. Above the transition temperatures, temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is observed at the Co L2,3-edge, but not at the other edges. The calculated electronic structure shows a spin polarized ground sta…
The recent discovery of superconductivity with relatively high transition temperature Tc in the layered iron-based quaternary oxypnictides La[ O1-xFx] FeAs was a real surprise. The excitement generated can be seen by the number of subsequent works published within a very short period of time. Although there exists superconductivity in alloy that contains Fe element, LaOMPn (with M= Fe, Ni; and Pn=P and As) is the first system where Fe-element plays the key role to the occurrence of superconductivity. LaOMPn has a layered crystal structure with an Fe-based plane. It is quite natural to ask whet…
Very recently, the tetragonal BiOCuS was synthesized and declared as a new superconducting system with Fe-oxypnictide - related structure. Here, based on first-principle FLAPW-GGA calculations, the structural parameters, electronic bands picture, density of states and electron density distribution for BiOCuS are investigated for the first time. Our results show that, as distinct from related metallic-like FeAs systems, BiOCuS phase behaves as an ionic semiconductor with the calculated indirect band gap at about 0.48 eV. The superconductivity for BiOCuS may be achieved exclusively by doping of …
The magnetic properties of the layered oxypnictide LaMnAsO have been revisited using neutron scattering and magnetization measurements. The present measurements identify the Néel temperature $T_N$ = 360(1) K. Below $T_N$ the critical exponent describing the magnetic order parameter is $β$ = 0.33$-$0.35, consistent with a three dimensional Heisenberg model. Above this temperature, diffuse magnetic scattering indicative of short-range magnetic order is observed, and this scattering persists up to $T_{SRO}$ = 650(10) K. The magnetic susceptibility shows a weak anomaly at $T_{SRO}$ and no anomaly …
A neptunium analogue of the LaFeAsO tetragonal layered compound has been synthesized and characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. The occurrence of long-range magnetic order below a critical temperature T_N = 57 K is suggested by anomalies in the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and specific heat curves. Below T_N, powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic structure of the Np sublattice, with an ordered magnetic moment of 1.70(0.07) μ_B aligned along the crystallographic c-axis. No magnetic order ha…
We investigate interplay between magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity in the effective five-band Hubbard model for iron-oxypnictide superconductors on the basis of the fluctuation-exchange approximation. As for the normal-state properties, we find the pseudogap behavior in the NMR relaxation rate and the spectral weight in the electron-doped region, while we cannot find such behavior in the hole-doped region. The pseudogap behavior originates from the band structure effect, that is, existence of high density of states just below the Fermi level. Solving the superconducting Eliashberg eq…
Using intrinsic multiple Andreev reflections effect (IMARE) spectroscopy, we studied ballistic superconductor - normal metal - superconductor (SnS) contacts in layered oxypnictide superconductors NdFeAsO$_{0.6}$H$_{0.36}$ with critical temperatures $T_c = 45-48$ K. We directly determined the magnitude of two bulk superconducting order parameters, the large gap $Δ_L \approx 10.4$ meV, and a possible small gap $Δ_S \approx 1.8$ meV, and their temperature dependence. Additionally, a resonant coupling with a characteristic bosonic mode was observed. The boson energy at 4.2 K, $\varepsilon_0 = 10.5…
Less than two years after the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in oxypnictide LaFeAs(O,F) several families of superconductors based on Fe layers (1111, 122, 11, 111) are available. They share several characteristics with cuprate superconductors that compromise easy applications, such as the layered structure, the small coherence length, and unconventional pairing, On the other hand the Fe-based superconductors have metallic parent compounds, and their electronic anisotropy is generally smaller and does not strongly depend on the level of doping, the supposed order parameter symm…
