Branching instability in the flux creep regime of type-II superconductors

We study theoretically the space-time evolution of the thermal and electromagnetic perturbation in a superconductor with a nonlinear current-voltage characteristics in the flux creep regime. On the basis of a linear analysis of a set of differential equations describing small perturbations of temperature and electromagnetic field, it is found that under some conditions a branching instability may occur in a superconductor sample.

Flux Creep and Flux Jumping

We consider the flux jump instability of the Bean's critical state arising in the flux creep regime in type-II superconductors. We find the flux jump field, $B_j$, that determines the superconducting state stability criterion. We calculate the dependence of $B_j$ on the external magnetic field ramp rate, $\dot B_e$. We demonstrate that under the conditions typical for most of the magnetization experiments the slope of the current-voltage curve in the flux creep regime determines the stability of the Bean's critical state, {\it i.e.}, the value of $B_j$. Blow-up instability in the vortex sate of type II superconductors

A theoretical study of small thermal and electromagnetic perturbations in type-II superconductors is studied in the flux creep regime with a power-law voltage-current characteristics. The space-time evolution of temperature and electric field was calculated using the heat diffusion equation, coupled with Maxwell's equations and material law, assuming that heat diffusion is small that the magnetic diffusion. An explicit blow-up-like solution is obtained, which describes the time and space evolution of the electromagnetic field and temperature due to flux jump instabilities.

This work is devoted to analysis of the nonlinear dynamics of interrelated thermal and electromagnetic perturbations in a superconductor caused by dissipative effects involved in the viscous motion of the magnetic flux. The thermomagnetic instability in superconducting films with adjacent metal layer

Dendritic flux avalanches is a frequently encountered consequence of the thermomagnetic instability in type-II superconducting films. The avalanches, potentially harmful for superconductor-based devices, can be suppressed by an adjacent normal metal layer, even when the two layers are not in thermal contact. Instability of flux flow and production of vortex-antivortex pairs by current-driven Josephson vortices in layered superconductors

We report numerical simulations of the nonlinear dynamics of Josephson vortices driven by strong dc currents in layered superconductors. Dynamic equations for interlayer phase differences in a stack of coupled superconducting layers were solved to calculate a drag coefficient $η(J)$ of the vortex as a function of the perpendicular dc current density $J$. Dendritic flux avalanches and nonlocal electrodynamics in thin superconducting films

We present numerical and analytical studies of coupled nonlinear Maxwell and thermal diffusion equations which describe nonisothermal dendritic flux penetration in superconducting films. We show that spontaneous branching of propagating flux filaments occurs due to nonlocal magnetic flux diffusion and positive feedback between flux motion and Joule heat generation. The branching is triggered by a thermomagnetic edge instability which causes stratification of the critical state.
