The production of $c\bar{c}c\bar{c}$, $b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}b\bar{b}$ pairs considering double parton scattering at LHC energies is investigated. We estimate the contribution of saturation effects to the different final states and predict the energy dependence of the cross sections. Moreover, we estimate the ratio between the double and single parton scattering cross sections for the full rapidity range of the LHC and for the rapidity range of the LHCb experiment. For the full rapidity range we confirm a previous prediction, namely that for charm production the double parton scattering contribution becomes comparable with the single parton scattering one at LHC energies. We also demonstrate that this result remains valid when one introduces saturation effects in the calculations. Finally we show that the production of $c\bar{c}b\bar{b}$ contributes significantly to bottom production. For the LHCb kinematical range the ratio is strongly reduced.
Partons are defined as the quanta in a Fock space description of a hadron. Gluon saturation is described in the Weizsäcker-Williams approximation for a large nucleus. The elements of DGLAP and BFKL evolution are given with the BFKL equation derived in a large-$N_c$ dipole formalism. A more general discussion of saturation is given in terms of a dipole scattering on a nucleon or nucleus. Possible evidence for saturation at HERA is discussed.
The phenomenology of gluon saturation at small parton momentum fraction, Bjorken-x, in the proton and in the nucleus is introduced. The experimentally-accessible kinematic domains at the nucleus-nucleus colliders RHIC and LHC are discussed. Finally, the saturation hints emerging from measurements at RHIC and the perspectives for LHC are described.
We introduce a generalized definition of parton distribution functions (PDFs) for a more consistent all-order treatment of power corrections. We present a new set of modified DGLAP evolution equations for nuclear PDFs, and show that the resummed $α_s A^{1/3}/Q^2$-type of leading nuclear size enhanced power corrections significantly slow down the growth of gluon density at small-$x$. We discuss the relation between the calculated power corrections and the saturation phenomena.
The idea of partons and the utility of using light-cone gauge in QCD are introduced. Saturation of quark and gluon distributions are discussed using simple models and in a more general context. The Golec-Biernat W\usthoff model and some simple phenomenology are described. A simple, but realistic, equation for unitary, the Kovchegov equation, is discussed, and an elementary derivation of the JIMWLK equation is given.
This is a personal summary of the meeting "Saturation, the Color Glass Condensate and Glasma: What Have we Learned from RHIC?" that took place at BNL in May 2010. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the status of high density QCD and parton saturation, and to review the progress that RHIC has allowed in the field.
It is argued that the gluon density introduced by A.Mueller in relation to the saturation phenomenon is different from the standardly defined one, which turned out to have a soliton-like form in the numerical calculations. It is shown that A.Mueller's densities obtained from the latter possess the same saturation properties as originally predicted.
Quark and gluon distributions in the light-cone wavefunction of a high energy hadron or nucleus are calculated in the saturation regime. One loop calculations are performed explicitly using the equivalence between the parton distribution in the light-cone wavefunction and the production distribution of that parton in a current-nucleon (nucleus) scattering. We argue that, except for some overall numerical factors, the Weizsacker- Williams wavefunction correctly gives the physics of the gluon distribution in a light-cone wavefunction.
A new geometrical scaling method with gluon saturation rapidity limit is proposed to study the gluon saturation feature of the central rapidity region of relativistic nuclear collisions. The net-baryon number is essentially transported by valence quarks that probe the saturation regime in the target by multiple scattering. We take advantage of the gluon saturation model with geometric scaling of the rapidity limit to investigate the net baryon distributions, nuclear stopping power and gluon saturation features in the SPS and RHIC energy regions. Predictions for net-baryon rapidity distribution…
We report on the results obtained in the study of the parton saturation effects, taken into account through the multiscattering Glauber-Mueller approach, applied to the Drell-Yan (DY) process described in the color dipole picture. As a main result, one shows that those effects play an important role in the estimates of the DY differential cross section atRHIC energies.
We construct diffractive parton distributions in the model of DIS diffraction in which the diffractive state is formed by the $q\bar{q}$ and $q\bar{q}g$ components. The interaction of such systems with the proton is described by the dipole cross section given by the saturation model. We find Regge factorization property with the measured at HERA depenedence on energy. The found parton distributions are evolved with the DGLAP evolution equations to make a comparison with the data.
We study the gluon parton densities [parton distribution functions (PDFs), transverse momentum distributions (TMDs), generalized parton distributions (GPDs)] and form factors in soft-wall AdS/QCD. We show that the power behavior of gluon parton distributions and form factors at large values of the light-cone variable and large values of square momentum is consistent with quark counting rules. We also show that the transverse momentum distributions derived in our approach obey the model-independent Mulders-Rodrigues inequalities without referring to specific model parameters. All gluon parton d…
We derive the medium-induced, coherent gluon radiation spectrum associated with the hard forward scattering of an energetic parton off a nucleus, in the saturation formalism and within the Gaussian approximation for the relevant correlators of Wilson lines. The calculation reproduces the simple expression for the spectrum previously obtained in the opacity expansion formalism, and rigorously specifies its validity range. The connection between the calculations in the opacity expansion and saturation formalisms is made apparent. This study may serve as a first step in order to implement consist…
In this contribution we briefly review the current status of the dipole models and parton saturation on the basis of results presented at the HERA-LHC workshops in the years 2006-2008. The problem of foundations of the dipole models is addressed within the QCD formalism. Some limitations of the models and open problems are pointed out. Furthermore, we review and compare the currently used dipole models and summarise the applications to describe various sets of HERA data. Finally we outline some of the theoretical approaches to the problem of multiple scattering and saturation.
Progresses towards the calculation and the understanding of NLO/NLL contributions to Deep Inelastic Scattering at low x with gluon saturation are being reviewed.
The quark saturation behavior at low $Q^2$ is shown in a numeric solution of the DGLAP equation with parton recombination corrections, which resembles the widely discussed JIMWLK saturation of gluons. Our calculation suggests that the partonic saturation can be interpreted as a dynamical balance between the splitting and the fusion processes of partons, without any other condensation mechanisms added. The nuclear shadowing saturation at small $x$ resulted from the proposed quark saturation is also discussed.
We review diffractive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in the light of the collinear factorization theorem. This theorem allows to define diffractive parton distributions in the leading twist approach. Due to its selective final states, diffractive DIS offers interesting insight into the form of the diffractive parton distributions which we explore with the help of the saturation model. We find Regge-like factorization with the correct energy dependence measured at HERA. A remarkable feature of diffractive DIS is the dominance of the twist-4 contribution for small diffractive masses. We quantif…
We develop a quasiclassical theory of the synchrotron-like gluon radiation. Our calculations show that the parton energy loss due to the synchrotron gluon emission may be important in the jet quenching phenomenon if the plasma instabilities generate a sufficiently strong chromomagnetic field. Our gluon spectrum disagrees with that obtained by Shuryak and Zahed within the Schwinger's proper time method.
The leading order single inclusive soft gluon production in high energy proton-nucleus (pA) collisions has been studied by various approaches for more than two decades. The first correction due to the gluon saturation in proton was analytically attempted recently through a diagrammatic approach in which only partial results were obtained. An important feature of the first saturation correction is that it includes both initial state and final state interactions. In this paper, we present the complete result derived from the Color Glass Condensate framework. Our approach is to analytically solve…
We note that the phenomenon of perturbative saturation leads to transverse momentum broadening in the spectrum of partons produced in hadronic collisions. This broadening has a simple interpretation as parton level Cronin effect for systems in which saturation is generated by the "tree level" Glauber-Mueller mechanism. For systems where the broadening results form the nonlinear QCD evolution to high energy, the presence or absence of Cronin effect depends crucially on the quantitative behavior of the gluon distribution functions at transverse momenta kt outside the so called scaling window. We…
A simplest case, where a contribution to a color ordered multi-gluon amplitude, describing a three body partonic interaction, can split into two weakly correlated two-body gluon scattering amplitudes and may thus contribute to a Double Parton Interaction, is briefly discussed. We find that the color ordered amplitude is not enhanced in the typical configuration generated by a DPI, where the transverse momenta of final state gluons are compensated pairwise, while a dominant contribution to the multi-gluon amplitude is due to terms proportional to the fusion amplitude of two initial state gluons…

We study radiative parton energy loss in an expanding quark-gluon plasma with magnetic monopoles. We find that for realistic number density of thermal monopoles obtained in lattice simulations parton rescatterings on monopoles can considerably enhance energy loss for plasma produced in $AA$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. However, contrary to previous expectations, monopoles do not lead to the surface dominance of energy loss.
We outline arguments for the cancellation of soft singularities in transition probabilities and parton distributions with incoming partons and Wilson lines, and with observed jets or heavy colored particles in the final states. We show the cancellation of Glauber gluons and divergent phases, relating finite remainders to corrections that arise from restrictions on final states in factorized cross sections.
These lecture notes are a combination of two lectures and a contribution to the celebration of Andrzej Białas' birthday at the LI Cracow School of Theoretical Physics in June 2011. I here discuss the dynamics of particle production in high energy reactions. It includes parton cascades and hadronization in e+e--ann., small x evolution including the Double Leading Log approximation and the BFKL equation, saturation at high densities and the BK equation, and finally the Lund Dipole Cascade model for high energy collisions, which is implemented in the DIPSY MC.
The gluon radiation induced by multiple scattering of a hard parton in expanding quark-gluon plasma is investigated. The radiative energy loss of hard parton jet is shown to decrease considerably when angular size of extracted jet goes up, but the fraction of loss survives even for the reasonable wide cone of angles due to the coherent effects taking into account the rescattering of the radiated gluons in the QCD medium. The possible application to the jet quenching phenomenon in heavy ion collisions at LHC energies is discussed.
Deep inelastic scattering at low x can be described by essentially only two fitted parameters. The interpretation of J/Psi photoproduction in terms of the gluon structure function is elaborated upon.
We discuss how the UN2LOPS scheme for matching NNLO calculations to parton showers can be applied to processes with large higher-order perturbative QCD corrections. We focus on Higgs-boson production through gluon fusion as an example. We also present an NNLO fixed-order event generator for this reaction.
We consider a novel mechanism for J/Psi production in nuclear collisions arising due to the high density of gluons. We calculate the resulting J/Psi production cross section as a function of rapidity and centrality. We evaluate the nuclear modification factor and show that the rapidity distribution of the produced J/Psi's is significantly more narrow in AA collisions due to the gluon saturation effects. Our results indicate that gluon saturation in the colliding nuclei is a significant source of J/Psi suppression that can be disentangled from the quark-gluon plasma effects.
The propagation of hard partons through spatially extended matter leads to medium-modifications of their fragmentation pattern. Here, we review the current status of calculations of the corresponding medium-induced gluon radiation, and how this radiation affects hadronic observables at collider energies.
We calculate the unintegrated gluon distribution at low intrinsic transverse momenta and its parameters are found from the best description of the SPS and LHC data on the $pp$ collision in the soft kinematical region. It allows us to study the saturation of the gluon density at low $Q^2$ more carefully and find the saturation scale.
We study parton distributions for two partons, a quark and a gluon, in the light-front dressed quark model, with focus on correlations between the two partons. The model calculation leads to sizable spin-spin and spin-kinematic correlations of interest for studies of double parton scattering (DPS) in high-energy collisions. In particular, we find that the transverse dependence of the double parton distributions (DPDs) does not factorize within the model. The results gives insight to the strengths of correlations in different kinematical regions, which can help in constructing input DPDs in cro…
We report on the interesting possibility of instanton-driven gluon saturation in lepton-nucleon scattering at small Bjorken-x. The explicitly known instanton gauge field serves as a concrete realization of an underlying non-perturbative saturation mechanism associated with strong classical fields. The conspicuous, intrinsic instanton size scale known from lattice simulations, turns out to determine the saturation scale. The ``colour glass condensate'' can be identified in our approach with the QCD-sphaleron state, dominating instanton-induced processes in the softer regime.
Parton distributions in the small $x$ region are numerically predicted by using a modified DGLAP equation with the GRV-like input distributions. We find that gluon recombination at twist-4 level obviously suppresses the rapid growth of parton densities with $x$ decrease. We show that before the saturation scale $Q^2_s$ is reached, saturation and partial saturation appear in the small $x$ behavior of parton distributions in nucleus and free proton, respectively. The antishadowing contributions to the saturation phenomena are also discussed.
We present an overview of theoretical aspects of the phenomenon of gluon saturation in high energy scattering in Quantum Chromo Dynamics. Then we review the state-of-the-art of saturation-based phenomenological approaches to the study and characterisation of the initial state of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions performed at RHIC and the LHC. Our review focuses mostly in the Color Glass Condensate effective theory, although we shall also discuss other approaches in parallel.
Motivated by the desire to understand the nucleon mass structure in terms of light-cone distributions, we introduce the twist-four parton distribution function $F(x)$ whose first moment is the gluon condensate in the nucleon. We present the equation of motion relations for $F(x)$ and discuss the possible existence of the delta function (`zero mode') contribution at $x=0$. We also perform one-loop calculations for quark and gluon targets.
We evaluate the unintegrated gluon distribution of the proton starting from a parametrization of the color dipole cross section including DGLAP evolution and saturation effects. To this end, we perform the Fourier-Bessel transform of $σ(x,r)/α(r)$. At large transverse momentum of gluons we match the so-obtained distribution to the logarithmic derivative of the collinear gluon distribution. We check our approach by calculating the proton structure function $F_L(x,Q^2)$ finding good agreement with HERA data.
A modification of the collinear evolution equations as an appropriate approach to improve the behavior of parton distribution functions in the region of small longitudinal momentum fractions, and to find more theoretical arguments to clarify the possible appearence of saturation regime is suggested. It is argued that parton diffusion in the rapidity space at large parton densities along the space-time evolution could result in the emergence of a natural saturation scale on which freezing actually occurs.
We discuss the energy loss of energetic parton jets in quark-gluon plasma above the deconfinement temperature $T_c$ by the interaction with scalar and pseudoscalar glueballs. It is shown that the loss by this mechanism is quite important and may play the important role of the observed jet-quenching.
We show that the inclusion of parton density effects in the perturbative small-x evolution reduces the strength of the powerlike growth of total hadronic cross sections.
Our approach to low-x deep inelastic scattering based on the ell-perp factorization of perturbative QCD (the color-dipole picture) yields parameter-free absolute predictions for J/Psi production. The connection of J/Psi production to the low-x saturation scale and to the gluon structure function is clarified.
Employing a newly developed pQCD inspired parton cascade we simulate the space time evolution of gluons which are produced initially in a heavy ion collision at RHIC energy. The inelastic $gg \leftrightarrow ggg$ interactions are for the first time implemented obeying full detailed balance. The numerical results show that thermalization of gluons is mainly driven by the inelastic gluonic interactions and reaches equilibrium at $1\sim 2$ fm/c. In simulations for noncentral collisions considerable partonic elliptic flow $v_2$ is generated being comparable with the experimental data.
We propose a formalism for calculating the event cross-section of parton interactions. In this formalism, we use the light-front bound-state wave function to expand scattering initial state. This leads to an expression of the cross-section in terms of square of wave functions which can be used to define the parton distribution functions. The probability interpretation of the partonic interactions among hadron-hadron scattering is naturally achieved. We apply this formalism to calculate the 4-particle final state cross-section for single parton, double parton and gluon splitting interactions. W…
We derive the complete Wilson renormalization group equation which governs the evolution of the gluon distribution and other gluonic observables at low $x$ and arbitrary density.
In the framework of a toy model which possesses the main features of QCD in the high energy limit, we conduct a numerical study of scattering amplitudes constructed from parton splittings and projectile-target multiple interactions, in a way that unitarizes the amplitudes without however explicit saturation in the wavefunction of the incoming states. This calculation is performed in two different ways. One of these formulations, the closest to field theory, involves the numerical resummation of a factorially divergent series, for which we develop appropriate numerical tools. We accurately comp…
We calculate the classical gluon field of a fast projectile passing through a dense medium. We show that this allows us to calculate both the initial state gluon production in proton-nucleus collisions and the final state gluon radiation off a hard parton produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions. This unified description of these two phenomena makes the relation between the saturation scale $Q_s$ and the transport coefficient $\hat q$ more transparent. Also, we discuss the validity of the eikonal approximation for gluon propagation inside the nucleus in proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC energy.
We argue that the collinear factorization of the fragmentation functions in high energy hadron and nuclei collisions breaks down at transverse momenta kT < Qs/g due to high parton densities in the colliding hadrons and/or nuclei. We calculate, at next-to-leading order in projectile parton density and to all orders in target parton density, the double-inclusive cross section for production of a pair of gluons in the scalar J^(PC)=0^(++) channel. Using the low energy theorems of QCD we find the inclusive cross section for pi-meson production.
Gluon distribution function at small x is computed using the extended McLerran-Venugopalan model. A lipatov like enhancement is seen as well as a non-trivial transverse momentum dependence which is estimated. It is shown that gluon density saturates at small x which would lead to unitarization of cross sections computed with this distribution function.
We consider the influence of parton saturation in the Color Glass Condensate on the back-to-back azimuthal correlations of high $p_T$ hadrons in $pA$ (or $dA$) collisions. When both near--side and away--side hadrons are detected at mid-rapidity at RHIC energy, the effects of parton saturation are constrained to transverse momenta below the saturation scale $p_T \leq Q_s$; in this case the back-to-back correlations do not disappear but exhibit broadening. However when near-side and away-side hadrons are separated by several units of rapidity, quantum evolution effects lead to the depletion of b…
The CCFM equation and its extended form with a quadratic term (KGBJS equation) are solved with fixed and running coupling constant. The solution of the KGBJS equation is compared to gluon densities resulting from the CCFM and BK equations. As the saturation scale $Q_s$ now becomes available as a function of the hard scale $p$ we observe that low values of $p$ impede its growth with $\frac 1 x$. Also, at values much larger than partons transversal momentum the saturation effects become independent on the hard scale what we call liberation of saturation scale. We also introduce the hard-scale-re…
We construct a Gaussian approximation to the effective theory for the Colour Glass Condensate which describes correctly the gluon distribution both in the low density regime at high transverse momenta (above the saturation scale $Q_s$), and in the high density regime below $Q_s$, and provides a simple interpolation between these two regimes. At high momenta, the effective theory reproduces the BFKL dynamics, while at low momenta, it exhibits gluon saturation and, related to it, colour neutrality over the short distance scale $1/Q_s \ll 1/Λ_{QCD}$. Gauge--invariant quantities computed within th…
We present the numerical solution of the non-linear evolution equation for DIS on nuclei for $x = 10^{-2} ÷10^{-7}$. We demonstrate that the solution to the non-linear evolution equation is quite different from the Glauber - Mueller formula which was used as the initial condition for the equation. We illustrate the energy profit for performing DIS experiments on nuclei. However, it turns out that the gain is quite modest: $x_{Au} \simeq 5 x_{\rm proton} $ for the same parton density. We find that the saturation scale $Q^2_s \propto A^{1/3}$. For gold the saturation scale $Q_{s,Au} \simeq 1.5 G…
