A precise measurement of the cross section for the process e+e- --> K+K-(gamma) from threshold to an energy of 5 GeV is obtained with the initial-state radiation (ISR) method using 232 fb^{-1} of data collected with the BaBar detector at e+e- center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. The measurement uses the effective ISR luminosity determined from the e+e- --> mu+mu-(gamma)gamma_ISR process with the same data set. The corresponding lowest-order contribution to the hadronic vacuum polarization term in the muon magnetic anomaly is found to be a_mu^{KK, LO}=(22.93 +- 0.18_{stat} +- 0.22_{syst}) * 10^{-10}. The charged kaon form factor is extracted and compared to previous results. Its magnitude at large energy significantly exceeds the asymptotic QCD prediction, while the measured slope is consistent with the prediction.

Recent BABAR and Belle results on rare B decays involving photons or lepton pairs are reviewed. New preliminary limits from both experiments for B-->rho gamma and B-->omega gamma, and from BABAR for B --> K nu nu and B --> tau nu are presented. Also summarized from the past year are Belle measurements of B-->Xs l+l- and B0-->K2(1430) gamma, preliminary BABAR measurements of B-->Xs gamma, and preliminary results from BABAR and Belle on B-->K(*)l+l-. No significant deviations from Standard Model predictions have yet been found.
We perform a measurement of the tau -> l gamma nu anti-nu (l = e, mu) branching fractions for a minimum photon energy of 10 MeV in the tau rest frame, using 431fb^-1 of e^+e^- collisions collected at the center-of-mass energy of the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II storage rings. We find B(tau -> mu gamma nu anti-nu ) = (3.69pm0.03pm0.10)x10^-3, and B(tau -> e gamma nu anti-nu ) = (1.847pm0.015pm0.052)x10^-2, where the first quoted error is statistical, and the second is systematic. These results are substantially more precise than previous measurements.
A sample of 23 million B B-bar events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider is used in a search for direct CP violation in charmless two-body B decays, quasi two-body B decays, and the radiative penguin decays B to K* gamma. No evidence for direct CP violation is found in the considered modes and 90% confidence level limits are reported. We also present a limit on the branching fraction of the decay B0 to gamma gamma.
The time-dependent CP asymmetries in fully reconstructed B0 --> D(*)pi/rho decays (new preliminary result), and in partially reconstructed B0 --> D(*)pi decays, are measured with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory at SLAC, using 232 million Y(4S) -> BB decays. We combine the above results and, using other measurements and theoretical assumptions, we interpret them in terms of the angles of the unitarity triangle describing the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. We find |sin(2beta+gamma)|>0.64(0.42) at 68%(90%) confidence level using a frequentistic approach and |2beta+gamma|=…

These results represent a substantial improvement with respect to ex…
The BABAR experiment has completed its first year of data-taking during which 21 $fb^{-1}$ of data were accumulated. We present preliminary results on two types of charmless B decays based on this data sample. The first, $B^0 \to K^{*0}γ$, is a so-called electromagnetic penguin. And the second, $B^0 \to h^+h^{'-}$, where $h^{(')}$ can be either a pion or kaon, can come from either penguin diagrams or Cabibbo suppressed tree diagrams.
A search for the Z(3930) resonance in gamma gamma production of the DDbar system has been performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 384 fb^-1 recorded by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The DDbar invariant mass distribution shows clear evidence of the Z(3930) state with a significance of 5.8 sigma. We determine mass and width values of (3926.7 +- 2.7 +- 1.1) MeV/c^2 and (21.3 +- 6.8 +- 3.6) MeV, respectively. A decay angular analysis provides evidence that the Z(3930) is a tensor state with positive parity and C-…
We present an update on total and partial branching fractions and on CP asymmetries in the semi-inclusive decay B -> Xs l+l-. Further, we summarize our results on branching fractions and CP asymmetries for semi-inclusive and fully-inclusive B -> Xs gamma decays. We present the first result on the CP asymmetry difference of charged and neutral B -> Xs gamma$ decays yielding the first constraint on the ratio of Wilson coefficients Im (C8/C7).
We discuss the design, implementation and performance of the radiation monitoring and protection system used by the Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) in the BaBar detector. Using 12 reverse-biased PIN photodiodes mounted around the beampipe near the IP, we are able to provide instantaneous radiation dose rates, absorbed dose integrals, and active protection that aborts the circulating beams in the PEP-II storage ring when radiation levels exceed user-defined thresholds. The system has reliably protected the SVT from excessive radiation damage and has also served as a key diagnostic tool in understa…

The results of the measurement of the eta_c mass, total and two-photon widths are also presented.
We report recent results in the search for the rare B meson decays B-->rho gamma and B0-->pi0 pi0. These results are based on 56.4 1/fb collected by the BaBar Collaboration at the SLAC PEP-II e+e- B Factory. We set new 90% confidence level upper limits BR(B0 --> rho0 gamma) < 1.5 x 10^-6, BR(B+ --> rho+ gamma) < 2.8 x 10^-6, and BR(B0 --> pi0 pi0) < 3.4 x 10^-6.
We present a search for the radiative leptonic decays B+ -> e+ nu gamma and B+ -> mu+ nu gamma using data collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory. We fully reconstruct the hadronic decay of one of the B mesons in Upsilon(4S) -> B+B- and then search for evidence of the signal decay within the rest of the event. This method provides clean kinematic information on the signal's missing energy and high momentum photon and lepton, and allows for a model-independent analysis of this decay. Using a data sample of 465 million B-meson pairs, we obtain sensitivity to branching fractions o…

We present measurements of inclusive charmonium production of charmonium in B decays and from the continuum, as well as exclusive branching ratios of B mesons into charmonium final states. We present also a measurement of the B0 -> K*0 gamma branching ratio and a search for the decay B0 -> gamma gamma.
The precise measurement of the cross section e+e- --> pi+ pi-(gamma) from threshold to an energy of 3 GeV, using events with Initial State Radiation (ISR) collected with the BABAR detector, is presented. The ISR luminosity is determined from a study of the leptonic process e+e- --> mu+ mu- gamma(gamma), and the method is tested by the comparison with the next-to-leading order (NLO) QED prediction. The leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly calculated using the BABAR pi pi cross section measured from threshold to 1.8 GeV is (514.1 +- 2.2(stat) +- 3.1(syst)) * 10^{-10}.…
We report on the measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle gamma through a Dalitz analysis of neutral D decays to K0s pi- pi+ in the processes B-+ -> D^(*) K-+ and B-+ -> D K^*-+, D^* -> D pi0, D gamma, with the Babar detector at the SLAC PEP-II e^+ e^- asymmetric-energy collider.
The ISR method has been largely exploited by the BABAR experiment, for measuring numerous channels of the cross section e+e- into hadrons. For the pi+pi-(gamma) and K+K-(gamma) channels, BABAR has pioneered the method based on the ratio between the hadronic mass spectra and the mu+mu-(gamma) one. This method allows to cancel many systematic uncertainties in the ratio, hence the precise measured cross sections. Many multihadronic channels have also been studied using the ISR method, and cross sections have been published. These experimental results have also been exploited for phenomenological …
We search for a light Higgs boson, $A^0$, in the radiative decay $Υ(3S)\toγA^0$, $A^0\toτ^+τ^-$, $τ^+\to e^+ν_e \barν_τ$ or $τ^+\to μ^+ ν_μ \barν_τ$. The data sample contains 122 million $Υ(3S)$ events recorded with the \babar detector. We find no evidence for a narrow structure in the studied $τ^+τ^-$ invariant mass region of $4.03<m_{τ^+τ^-}<10.10$ \gevcc. We exclude at the 90% confidence level (C.L.) a low mass Higgs decaying to $τ^+τ^-$ with a product branching fraction ${\cal {B}}(Υ(3S)\toγA^0)\times {\cal {B}}(A^0\toτ^+τ^-)$ $>(1.5-16)\times 10^{-5}$ across the $m_{τ^+τ^-}$ range. We als…
With 12.3 fb-1 collected by the BaBar experiment in 2001, the mixing parameter y = Delta(Gamma)/(2 Gamma) is determined from the ratio of the D0 lifetimes measured in the D0 --> K- pi+ and in the D0 --> K- K+ decay modes. The preliminary result y = (-1.0 +- 2.2(stat.) +- 1.7(syst.))% is obtained. Also presented is the status of measuring the mixing parameters y and x^2 = [Delta(M)/Gamma]^2 from a simultaneous fit to the time evolution of the decay time distributions of Cabibbo-favored right-sign (D0 --> K- pi+) and doubly Cabibbo-suppressed wrong-sign (D0 --> K+ pi-) decays. The wrong-sign dec…
A precise measurement of the cross section of the process $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-(γ)$ from threshold to an energy of 3GeV is obtained with the initial-state radiation (ISR) method using 232fb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the BaBar detector at $e^+e^-$ center-of-mass energies near 10.6GeV. The ISR luminosity is determined from a study of the leptonic process $e^+e^-\toμ^+μ^-(γ)γ_{\rm ISR}$, which is found to agree with the next-to-leading-order QED prediction to within 1.1%. The cross section for the process $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-(γ)$ is obtained with a systematic uncertainty of 0.5% in the dominant $ρ$ re…
Electro-weak penguin and leptonic decays provide an indirect probe for physics beyond the Standard Model and contribute to the determination of Standard Model parameters. Copious quantities of B mesons produced at the B-Factories permit precision measurements of the electro-weak penguin decays and searches for leptonic decays. We review the current experimental status of b -> s(d) gamma, B^0 -> D^{*0} gamma, b -> s l^+ l^- and finally B->tau nu decays at BaBar.
The process e+e- --> p anti-p gamma is studied using 469 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider, at an e+e- center-of-mass energy of 10.6 GeV. From the analysis of the p anti-p invariant mass spectrum, the energy dependence of the cross section for e+e- --> p anti-p is measured from threshold to 4.5 GeV. The energy dependence of the ratio of electric and magnetic form factors, |G_E/G_M|, and the asymmetry in the proton angular distribution are measured for p anti-p masses below 3 GeV. We also measure the branching fractions for the decays J/psi -…
We present a measurement of the total width, Gamma_tot, and mass, M, of the eta_c meson with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-factory at SLAC. The results based on a data sample of 88 fb^-1 are Gamma_tot = (33.3 +- 2.5(stat.) +- 0.8(sys.))MeV and M = (2983.3 +- 1.2 +- 1.8) MeV. An enhancement observed around 3.63 GeV can be interpreted as an evidence for the eta_c(2S) state. In addition a preliminary measurement of the tau lepton lifetime using 30.2 fb^-1 is described. The measured tau lifetime is: (290.8 +- 1.5(stat.) +- 1.6(syst.))fs.

From the analysis of the baryon-antibaryon mass spectra the cross sections for e+e- --> Lambda anti-Lambda, Lambda anti-Sigma0, Sigma0 anti-Sigma0 are measured in the dibaryon mass range from threshold up to 3 GeV/c^2. The ratio of electric and magnetic form factors, |G_E/G_M|, is measured for e+e- --> Lambda anti-Lambda, and limits on the relative phase between Lambda for…
New Babar results on exclusive e+e- -> hadrons reactions at low c.m. energy with a baryon-antibaryon or K\bar{K} pair in the final state are presented. Cross sections are measured using the initial state radiation technique from the threshold up to 4--5 GeV. From the measured e+e- -> proton\antiproton, Lambda\Lbar, Sigma0\Sigbar0, Lambda\Sigbar0(Sigma0\Lbar) cross sections we derive effective baryon form factors and compare them with predictions. We measure the K\bar{K}π(η), K+K-ππ, K+K-3π, K+K-4π, K+K-K+K- final states and also study their internal structure. A new Y(2175) state is observed i…
We present some recent measurements of rare flavor-changing neutral current B decays, using data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider at SLAC. First, we search for the rare process B+ -> K+ tau- tau+ and we do not find evidence for signal. The measured branching fraction is (1.31+0.66-0.61(stat.)+0.35-0.25(sys.)) x 10-3 with an upper limit, at the 90% confidence level, of B(B+ -> K+ tau+ tau-) < 2.25 x 10-3. We then study the lepton forward-backward asymmetry AFB and the longitudinal K* polarization FL in the rare decays B -> K* l+ l-, where l+ l- is either e+ e- or mu…
In the present paper we review recent experimental results from the BaBar experiment concerning the measurement of the CKM angles. A particular highlight is given to the novel independent determination of the angle alpha from B0 -> a_1(1260)+/- pi -/+ and to the recent full-luminosity updates of several angle gamma measurements.
The photon spectrum in B->X_{s,d} γdecay, where X_s(d) is any strange (non-strange) hadronic state, is studied using data samples of $e^+e^- \rightarrow Υ(4S) \to B B-bar decays collected by the Babar and Belle experiments. Here I present the latest measurements of the branching fraction and spectral mo ments from B -> X_s gamma$ decays by Belle and the direct CP asymmetry of B->X_{s+d} gamma measured at Babar. The determination of |V_{td}/V_{ts}|^2$ i also presented.
b to s transitions are flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes that play an important role in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Contributions from virtual particles in the loop are predicted to deviate observables, such as the branching fraction, from their SM expectations. Using data from the BaBar experiment, we present the first search for the rare decay B to K tau tau. The BABAR results on the measurement of the angular asymmetries of B to Kstar l l, where l is an electron or muon, are also reported. In addition, using a time-dependent analysis of B to KS0 pi…
The process e+e- --> pi+ pi- pi0 gamma has been studied at a center-of-mass energy near the Y(4S) resonance using a 89.3 fb-1 data sample collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II collider. From the measured 3pi mass spectrum we have obtained the products of branching fractions for the omega and phi mesons, B(omega --> e+e-)B(omega --> 3pi)=(6.70 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.27)10-5 and B(phi --> e+e-)B(phi --> 3pi)=(4.30 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.21)10-5, and evaluated the e+e- --> pi+ pi- pi0 cross section for the e+e- center-of-mass energy range 1.05 to 3.00 GeV. About 900 e+e- --> J/psi gamma --> pi+ pi- pi0…
The BaBar experiment has discovered a narrow state, denoted as D*_{sJ}(2317)+, near 2.32 GeV/c^2 in the D+s pi^0 invariant mass distribution from inclusive $e^{+}e^{-}$ interactions at center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. The same experiment has hinted the presence of a second new state near 2.46 GeV/c^2 in the D+_s pi^0 gamma mass spectrum. These discoveries have triggered CLEO and Belle experiments in their own search for new states coupled to D+_s meson. They have confirmed the existence of the D*_{sJ}(2317)^+ state and established the evidence for the second state denoted as D*_{sJ}(2458…
We review recent results of the BABAR and BELLE Collaborations on the the alpha and gamma angles of the unitary triangle, on the B to K pi pi Dalitz-plot analyses, and on the searches for baryonic B decays and for B to DD decays.
We study the process $e^+e^-\to J/ψπ^{+}π^{-}$ with initial-state-radiation events produced at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy collider. The data were recorded with the BaBar detector at center-of-mass energies 10.58 and 10.54 GeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 454 $\mathrm{fb^{-1}}$. We investigate the $J/ψπ^{+}π^{-}$ mass distribution in the region from 3.5 to 5.5 $\mathrm{GeV/c^{2}}$. Below 3.7 $\mathrm{GeV/c^{2}}$ the $ψ(2S)$ signal dominates, and above 4 $\mathrm{GeV/c^{2}}$ there is a significant peak due to the Y(4260). A fit to the data in the range 3.74 -- 5.50 $\mathrm{G…
The e+e- -> p anti-p cross section is determined over a range of p anti-p masses, from threshold to 4.5 GeV/c^2, by studying the e+e- -> p anti-p gamma process. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 232 fb^-1, collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring, at an e+e- center-of-mass energy of 10.6 GeV. The mass dependence of the ratio of electric and magnetic form factors, |G_E/G_M|, is measured for p anti-p masses below 3 GeV/c^2; its value is found to be significantly larger than 1 for masses up to 2.2 GeV/c^2. We also measure J/psi -> p anti-p and psi(2S) -> …
We present herein the most recent BABAR results on direct CP asymmetry measurements in B -> Xs gamma, on partial branching fraction and CP asymmetry measurements in B -> Xs l+l-, on a search for B -> pi/eta l+l- decays, on a search for lepton number violation in B -> X-l+l'+ modes and a study of B-> omega omega and B-> omega phi decays.
The BABAR Collaboration performed a search for xi(2220) production in the initial-state radiation process e^+e^- --> gamma J/psi, J/psi --> gamma K^+K^- or J/psi --> gamma K^0_SK^0_S. No evidence for the xi(2220) resonance has been found. The 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of branching fractions are sensitive to the spin and helicity hypotheses. These upper limits are of the order 10^-5, below the values reported in previous experiments. Also at BABAR, the decays B --> J/psi pi^+ pi^- pi^0 K are studied to search for the decay X(3872) --> J/psi omega. This search yields a fou…
We present some recent BABAR measurements of the magnitudes of the elements Vub and Vcb of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix, and of the angles alpha and gamma of the unitary triangle of the standard model of the electroweak interactions. Most of the measurements presented here are based on the full BABAR Y(4S) dataset, consisting of about 467 million B anti-B pairs.
The status of analysis of processes with hard photon emitted from the initial state (ISR) at BABAR is presented. We tag events by the presence of a hard photon in the detector, then reconstruct mu+mu- and several exclusive hadronic final states. The invariant mass of the final state determines an effective collision center of mass energy at which these measurements can be compared with results from direct e+e- annihilation process. The first results on e+e- --> 2h+2h-, where h=pi,K and on e+e- --> J/psi, obtained with a sample of 89.3/fb, are presented. Measurements of inclusive eta, pi+, K+ a…
The charmonium-like states, Y(4260), Y(4350), produced via initial state radiation, as well as the X(3872), and Y(3940), produced in B meson decays from the BABAR B-factory are reviewed. These mesons do not seem consistent with conventional charmonium models, and several alternate hypotheses have been proposed to explain these new discoveries.
We present an update of the study of the Y(4260) resonance, produced in the process $e^+e^-\toγ_{ISR} π^+π^-J/ψ$ using initial-state radiation events at the PEP-II $e^+e^-$ storage rings. This study is based on 454fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded with the {\slshape B\kern-0.1em{\smaller A}\kern-0.1em B\kern-0.1em{\smaller A\kern-0.2em R}} detector at a center-of-mass energy in the $Υ(4S)$ resonance region. From a fit with a single non-relativistic Breit-Wigner shape we obtain updated parameters for the Y(4260) resonance which are $m_Y = 4252 \pm6 ^{+2}_{-3}$MeV/c$^2$ and $Γ_Y = 105 \pm 18^{+4}_{-6}$…
We study the process $e^+e^-\toψ(2S)π^{+}π^{-}$ with initial-state-radiation events produced at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy collider. The data were recorded with the \BaBar detector at center-of-mass energies at and near the $Υ(\mathrm{nS})$ (n = 2, 3, 4) resonances and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 520$fb^{-}$. We investigate the $ψ(2S)π^{+}π^{-}$ mass distribution from 3.95 to 5.95 $GeV/c^{2}$, and measure the center-of-mass energy dependence of the associated $e^+e^-\to ψ(2S)π^{+}π^{-}$ cross section. The mass distribution exhibits evidence of two resonant structures. A fit to …
A precise measurement of the ratio of hadron to muon production in e^+e^- collisions, denoted by R(s), is a necessary input for the interpretation of current precision electroweak measurements. We describe a method for measuring R(s) with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B-factory using initial-state radiation events.
On behalf of the Babar and Belle collaborations, we report on the measurement of the angle gamma and on the sum of angles 2 beta+gamma of the Unitarity Triangle.
We present the first observation of the bottomonium ground state eta_b(1S) in the photon energy spectrum using a sample of 109+/-1 million of Upsilon(3S) events recorded at the Upsilon(3S) energy with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B factory at SLAC. A peak at E_gamma = 921.2 {+2.1}{-2.8}(stat) +/- 2.4(syst) MeV observed with a significance of 10 standard deviations in the photon energy spectrum is interpretated as being due to the radiative transition Upsilon(3S) -> gamma eta_b(1S). This photon energy corresponds to an eta_b(1S) mass of 9388.9 {+3.1}{-2.3}(stat) +/- 2.7(syst) MeV/c2. The hy…
I will review the latest developments in determining the CP-violating phases of the CKM matrix elements from measurements by the BaBar and BELLE experiments at the high-luminosity B factories (PEP-II and KEKB). The emphasis will be on the angle gamma/phi_3 of the Unitarity Triangle, which is the relative phase arg(-V_ud V_ub^*/V_cd V_cb^*), or the CP-violating phase of the b to u transition in the commonly used Wolfenstein convention.
