A search for the Z(3930) resonance in gamma gamma production of the DDbar system has been performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 384 fb^-1 recorded by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The DDbar invariant mass distribution shows clear evidence of the Z(3930) state with a significance of 5.8 sigma. We determine mass and width values of (3926.7 +- 2.7 +- 1.1) MeV/c^2 and (21.3 +- 6.8 +- 3.6) MeV, respectively. A decay angular analysis provides evidence that the Z(3930) is a tensor state with positive parity and C-parity (J^PC = 2^++); therefore we identify the Z(3930) state as the chi_c2(2P) meson. The value of the partial width Gamma_(gamma gamma)xB(Z(3930)-> DDbar) is found to be (0.24 +- 0.05 +- 0.04) keV.
The BaBar and Belle experiments have recently presented evidence for D-Dbar mixing. We explain the following points: (i) The measurements imply width difference $y \sim 0.01$. In the limit of small CP violation, the CP-odd state is longer-lived; (ii) $y\sim0.01$ is consistent with the Standard Model. It suggests that SU(3) breaking from phase space effects is likely to play a major role; (iii) There is no evidence for either large mass splitting or CP violation. Consequently, there is no hint for new physics; (iv) The stronger bounds on the mass splitting and on CP violation imply that, if squ…
We present a measurement of the branching fractions of the 22 decay channels of the B0 and B+ mesons to Dbar(*)D(*)K, where the D(*) and Dbar(*) mesons are fully reconstructed. Summing the 10 neutral modes and the 12 charged modes, the branching fractions are found to be B(B0 -> Dbar(*)D(*)K) = (3.68 +- 0.10 +- 0.24)% and B(B+ -> Dbar(*)D(*)K) = (4.05 +- 0.11 +- 0.28)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are based on 429 fb^-1 of data containing 471.10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the BaBar detector at the SLAC National A…
We report a study of DsJ*(2317)+ and DsJ(2460)+ meson production in B decays. We observe the decays B+ -> DsJ(*)+ Dbar(*)0 and B0 -> DsJ(*)+ D(*)- with the subsequent decays DsJ*(2317)+ -> Ds+ pi0, DsJ(2460)+ -> Ds+ gamma, and DsJ(2460)+ -> Ds*+ pi0. Based on a data sample of 122.1 million BBbar pairs collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B factory, we obtain branching fractions for these modes, including the previously unseen decays B -> DsJ(*)+ D*. In addition, we perform an angular analysis of DsJ(2460)+ -> Ds+ gamma decays to test the different DsJ(2460)+ spin hypotheses.
We present a study of resonances in exclusive decays of $B$ mesons to $\bar{D}^{(*)} D^{(*)} K$. We report the observation of the decays $B \to \Dbar^{(*)} D^+_{s1}(2536)$ where the $D^+_{s1}(2536)$ is reconstructed in the $D^{*0}K^+$ and $D^{*+} K^0_S$ decay channels. We report also the observation of the decays $B \to ψ(3770) K$ where the $ψ(3770)$ decays to $\Dbar^0 D^0$ and $D^- D^+$. In addition, we present the observation of an enhancement for the $\Dbar^{*0} D^0$ invariant mass in the decays $B \to \Dbar^{*0} D^0 K$, at a mass of $(3875.1 {}^{+0.7}_{-0.5} \pm 0.5)$ MeV/$c^2$ with a widt…
We report on a search for new resonant states in the process gamma gamma --> D Dbar. A candidate C-even charmonium state is observed in the vicinity of 3.93 GeV/c^2. The production rate and the angular distribution in the gamma gamma center-of-mass frame suggest that this state is the previously unobserved chi'_(c2), the 2^3P_2 charmonium state.

A search for charmonium and other new states is performed in a study of exclusive initial-state-radiation production of D Dbar events from electron-positron annihilations at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 384 fb-1 and was recorded by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II storage ring. The D Dbar mass spectrum shows clear evidence of the psi(3770) plus other structures near 3.9, 4.1, and 4.4 GeV/c^2. No evidence for Y(4260) -> D Dbar is observed, leading to an upper limit of B(Y(4260) -> D Dbar)/B(Y(4260) -> J/psi pi+ pi-) < 1.0 at …
The search for rare B decays and direct CP violation at BABAR is described. The following measurements (based on integrated luminosities ranging from 56.4 to 81.9fb-1) are summarized: the inclusive branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries of B+ to h+h-h+ (h=pi, K), the exclusive branching fractions of B+ to K+pi-pi+ (where significant signals are observed in the B+ to K*0(892)pi+, B+ to f0(980)K+, B+ to chic0 K+, B+ to Dbar0 pi+ and B^+ to higher K*0 pi+ channels), the branching fractions of B+ to rho0rho+ and B+ to rho0 K*+, and finally, the branching fractions, the longitudinal componen…
We use $(121\pm1)$ million $Υ(3S)$ and $(98\pm1)$ million $Υ(2S)$ mesons recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II $e^+e^-$ collider at SLAC to perform a study of radiative transitions involving the $χ_{b\mathrm{J}}(1P,2P)$ states in exclusive decays with $μ^+μ^-γγ$ final states. We reconstruct twelve channels in four cascades using two complementary methods. In the first we identify both signal photon candidates in the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMC), employ a calorimeter timing-based technique to reduce backgrounds, and determine branching-ratio products and fine mass splittings. These …
We report preliminary results on the measurement of branching fractions of exclusive decays of neutral and charged B mesons into two-body final states containing a charmonium state and a light strange meson. The charmonium mesons considered are J/psi, psi(2S) and chic_c1, and the light mesons are either K or K*. We use a sample of about 124 million BBbar events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
We report measurements of charmonium resonances (J/Psi, Psi(2S),Chi_c1) using about 25 fb^-1 of data collected by the BABAR detector around the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We present measurements of inclusive charmonium production of charmonium in B decays and from the continuum, as well as exclusive branching ratios of B mesons into charmonium final states. We present also a measurement of the B0 -> K*0 gamma branching ratio and a search for the decay B0 -> gamma gamma.
We present some recent measurements performed using 514 fb-1 of $e^+e^-$ collisions collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric collider at SLAC. First we present a study of the decay tau -> K K_S nu, we measure the branching fraction B(tau -> K K_S nu), the mass spectrum of the K K_S system and obtain the spectral function. Our results are in agreement with and improve previous measurements. We then report a search for a dark boson A' produced in the reaction e+e- -> gamma A' in invisible final states A' -> chi anti-chi . We find no evidence for such processes and set 90% confi…
We search for the factorization-suppressed decays B -> chi_c0 K(*) and B -> chi_c2 K(*), with chi_c0 and chi_c2 decaying into J/psi gamma using a sample of 124 10^6 BBbar events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
We point out that the very recent discoveries of BaBar (2317) and CLEO II (2460) are consistent with the general pattern of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in hadrons built of heavy and light quarks, as originally suggested by us in 1992, and independently by Bardeen and Hill in 1993. The splitting between the chiral doublers follows from a mixing between the light constituent quark mass and the velocity of the heavy quark, and vanishes for a zero constituent quark mass. The general strictures of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking constrain the axial charges in the chiral multiplet, …
We report on the search for the factorization suppressed decays B -> chi_c0 K(*) and B -> chi_c2 K(*), with chi_c0 and chi_c2 decaying into J/psi gamma. We use a sample of 124 million BBbar events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. No significant signal is found and upper bounds for the branching fractions are obtained. All results are preliminary.
From e+e- collision data acquired with the CLEO detector at CESR, we observe the non-D Dbar decay psi(3770)->gamma chi_c1 with a statistical significance of 6.6 standard deviations, using the two-photon cascades to J/psi and J/psi->l+l-. We determine sigma(e+e- -> psi(3770)) x BR(psi(3770)->gamma chi_c1) =(18.0 pm3.3 pm2.5) pb and branching fraction BR(psi(3770)->gamma chi_c1)=(2.8+-0.5+-0.4) x 10^-3. We set 90% C.L. upper limits for the transition to chi_c2 (chi_c0) : sigma x BR < 5.7 pb (< 282 pb) and BR < 0.9 x 10^-3 (<44 x 10^-3). We also determine Gamma(psi(3770)->gamma chi_c1)/Gamma(psi(…
We present the observation of the decay B0 -> chi_c0K*0 as well as evidence of B+ -> chi_c0K*+, with an 8.9 and a 3.6 standard deviation significance, respectively, using a data sample of 454 million Y(4S) -> BB decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B meson factory located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The measured branching fractions are: B(B0 -> chi_c0K*0) = (1.7 +/- 0.3 +/- 0.2) * 10^{-4} and B(B+ -> chi_c0K^*+) = (1.4 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.2) * 10^{-4}, where the first quoted errors are statistical and the second are systematic. We obtain a branching fraction u…
In this talk, I review the recent experimental results on charmonium spectroscopy from BESIII, Belle, BaBar and CLEOc. Below the open-charm threshold, the masses and widths of spin-singlet states eta_c, eta_c(2S), h_c are measured with high precision. Above the threshold, chi_{c2}(2P) is identified in the process gamma gamma -> chi_{c2}(2P) -> gamma D bar{D}; Evidence of X(3823) is found in the M(chi_{c1} gamma) invariant-mass distribution for B -> gamma chi_{c1} K decays, the measured properties are consistent with the missing psi_2(1^{2}D_2) state.
We perform the first three-dimensional measurement of the amplitudes of $B\to ψ(2S) K^*$ and $B\to χ_{c1} K^*$ decays and update our previous measurement for $B\to J/ψK^*$. We use a data sample collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP2 storage ring, corresponding to 232 million $B\bar B$ pairs. The longitudinal polarization of decays involving a $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ $χ_{c1}$ meson is found to be larger than that with a $1^{--}$ $J/ψ$ or $ψ(2S)$ meson. No direct {\it CP}-violating charge asymmetry is observed.
We reconstruct the charmonium mesons J/psi, psi(2S) and chi_C1 using a sample of 8.46 x 10^6 B-anti-B events collected by the BABAR detector operating at e^+e^- center of mass energies near the Y(4S) resonance. By measuring rates relative to the branching fraction of the J/psi, we obtain preliminary inclusive B branching fractions of (0.25+/-0.02+/-0.02)% to the psi(2S) and (0.39+/-0.04+/-0.04)% to the chi_C1, and set a 90% confidence level limit of 0.24% on decays through the chi_C2.
We search for single-photon decays of the Upsilon(1S) resonance, Upsilon->gamma+invisible, where the invisible state is either a particle of definite mass, such as a light Higgs boson A0, or a pair of dark matter particles, chi chi-bar. Both A0 and chi are assumed to have zero spin. We tag Upsilon(1S) decays with a dipion transition Upsilon(2S)->pi+pi-Upsilon(1S) and look for events with a single energetic photon and significant missing energy. We find no evidence for such processes in the mass range m_A0<=9.2 GeV and m_chi<=4.5 GeV in the sample of 98e6 Upsilon(2S) decays collected with the B…
We report a study of the process gamma gamma -> X -> eta_c pi+ pi-, where X stands for one of the resonances chi_{c2}(1P), eta_c(2S), X(3872), X(3915), or chi_{c2}(2P). The analysis is performed with a data sample of 473.9 fb^{-1} collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. We do not observe a significant signal for any channel, and calculate 90% confidence-level upper limits on the products of branching fractions and two-photon widths Gamma(X -> gamma gamma)BR(X -> eta_c pi+ pi-): 15.7 eV for chi_{c2}(1P), 133 eV for eta_c(2S), 11.1 eV for X(3…
A recent analysis of data on the two photon production of the $η_c$ and its decay to $K(Kπ)$ has determined the $Kπ$ $S$-wave amplitude in a "model-independent" way assuming primarily that the additional kaon is a spectator in this decay. The purpose of this paper is to fit these results, together with classic $Kπ$ production data from LASS, within a formalism that implements unitarity for the di-meson interaction. This fixes the $I=1/2$ $Kπ\to Kπ$ $S$-wave amplitude up to 2.4 GeV. This resolves the Barrelet ambiguity in the original LASS analysis, and constrains the amount of inelasticity in …
We study inclusive di-pion decays using a sample of 108 x 10^6 Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BABAR detector. We search for the decay mode Upsilon(3S) --> pi+ pi- h_b(1P) and find no evidence for the bottomonium spin-singlet state h_b(1P) in the invariant mass distribution recoiling against the pi+ pi- system. Assuming the h_b(1P) mass to be 9.900 GeV/c^2, we measure the upper limit on the branching fraction B[Upsilon(3S) --> pi+ pi- h_b(1P)] < 1.2 x 10^{-4}, at 90% confidence level. We also investigate the chi_{bJ}(2P) --> pi+ pi- chi_{bJ}(1P), Upsilon(3S) --> pi+ pi- Upsilon(2S), and U…
In a study of B+ --> J/psi gamma K+ decays, we find evidence for the radiative decay X(3872) --> J/psi gamma with a statistical significance of 3.4 sigma. We measure the product of branching fractions BF(B+ --> X(3872) K+).BF(X(3872) --> J/psi gamma) = (3.3 +/- 1.0 +/- 0.3) x 10^-6, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We also measure the branching fraction BF(B+ --> chi_c1 K+) = (4.9 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.4) x 10^-4. These results are obtained from (287+/-3) million BBar decays collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B Factory at SLAC.
A search is presented for the decay Y(1S) -> gamma A0, A0 -> cc-bar, where A0 is a candidate for the CP-odd Higgs boson of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model. The search is based on data collected with the BABAR detector at the Y(2S) resonance. A sample of Y(1S) mesons is selected via the decay Y(2S) -> pi+pi-Y(1S). The A0 -> cc-bar decay is identified through the reconstruction of hadronic D0, D+, and D*(2010)+ meson decays. No significant signal is observed. The measured 90% confidence-level upper limits on the product branching fraction B(Y(1S) -> gamma A0) x B(A0 -> cc-bar) …
We study the processes gamma gamma -> K^0_S K pi and gamma gamma -> K+ K- pi+ pi- pi0 using a data sample of 519.2 fb-1 recorded by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at center-of-mass energies near the Upsilon(nS) (n = 2,3,4) resonances. We observe the eta_c(1S), chi_c0(1P) and eta_c(2S) resonances produced in two-photon interactions and decaying to K+K-pi+pi-pi0, with significances of 18.1, 5.4 and 5.3 standard deviations (including systematic errors), respectively, and report 4.0sigma evidence of the chi_c2(1P) decay to this final state. We measure the eta_c(2S…
We use 111+/-1 million Upsilon(3S) and 89+/-1 million Upsilon(2S) events recorded by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B-factory at SLAC to perform a study of radiative transitions between bottomonium states using photons that have been converted to e+e- pairs by the detector material. We observe Upsilon(3S) -> gamma chi_b0,2(1P) decay, make precise measurements of the branching fractions for chi_b1,2(1P,2P) -> gamma Upsilon(1S) and chi_b1,2(2P) -> gamma Upsilon(2S) decays, and search for radiative decay to the eta_b(1S) and eta_b(2S) states.
Using a sample of 122 million Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC, we search for the $h_b(1P)$ spin-singlet partner of the P-wave chi_{bJ}(1P) states in the sequential decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi0 h_b(1P), h_b(1P) --> gamma eta_b(1S). We observe an excess of events above background in the distribution of the recoil mass against the pi0 at mass 9902 +/- 4(stat.) +/- 2(syst.) MeV/c^2. The width of the observed signal is consistent with experimental resolution, and its significance is 3.1sigma, including systematic uncertainties. …
