We prepare a superposition of two motional states by addressing lithium atoms immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium with a species-selective potential. The evolution of the superposition state is characterized by the populations of the constituent states as well as their coherence. The latter we extract employing a novel scheme analogous to the spin-echo technique. Comparing the results directly to measurements on freely-evolving fermions allows us to isolate the decoherence effects induced by the bath. In our system, the decoherence time is close to the maximal possible value since the decoherence is dominated by population relaxation processes. The measured data are in good agreement with a theoretical model based on Fermi's golden rule.
We demonstrate a two-pulse Ramsey-type interferometer for non-classical motional states of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an anharmonic trap. The control pulses used to manipulate the condensate wavefunction are obtained from Optimal Control Theory and directly optimised to maximise the interferometric contrast. They permit a fast manipulation of the atomic ensemble compared to the intrinsic decay and many-body dephasing effects, and thus to reach an interferometric contrast of 92% in the experimental implementation.
We study the dissipative dynamics of neutral atoms in anisotropic harmonic potentials, immersed in a reservoir species that is not trapped by the harmonic potential. Considering initial motional excitation of the atoms along one direction, we explore the resulting spontaneous emission of reservoir excitations, across a range of trap parameters from strong to weak radial confinement. In different limits these processes are useful as a basis for analogies to laser cooling, or as a means to introduce controlled dissipation to many-body dynamics. For realistic experimental parameters, we analyse t…
In this paper, we study the problem of an impurity with infinite mass and the Casimir force between two impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Our calculation results shows that the Casimir force decays exponentially in distance at large distance.
We report on the immersion of a spin-qubit encoded in a single trapped ion into a spin-polarized neutral atom environment, which possesses both continuous (motional) and discrete (spin) degrees of freedom. The environment offers the possibility of a precise microscopic description, which allows us to understand dynamics and decoherence from first principles. We observe the spin dynamics of the qubit and measure the decoherence times (T1 and T2), which are determined by the spin-exchange interaction as well as by an unexpectedly strong spin-nonconserving coupling mechanism.
We have created a triply quantum degenerate mixture of bosonic $^{41}$K and two fermionic species $^{40}$K and $^6$Li. The boson is shown to be an efficient coolant for the two fermions, spurring hopes for the observation of fermionic superfluids with imbalanced masses. We observe multiple heteronuclear Feshbach resonances, in particular a wide s-wave resonance for the combination $^{41}$K-$^{40}$K, opening up studies of strongly interacting {\it isotopic} Bose-Fermi mixtures. For large imbalance, we enter the polaronic regime of dressed impurities immersed in a bosonic or fermionic bath.
We study the diffusive behavior of a Bose polaron immersed in a coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). Polaron superdiffuses if it couples in the same manner to both components, i.e. either attractively or repulsively to both of them. This is the same behavior as that of an impurity immersed in a single BEC. Conversely, the polaron exhibits a transient nontrivial subdiffusive behavior if it couples attractively to one of the components and repulsively to the other. The anomalous diffusion exponent and the duration of the subdiffusive interval can be controlled with th…
We theoretically study the static and dynamic behavior of a BEC immersed in a large Fermi sea of ultracold atoms under conditions of tunable interspecies interaction. The degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture is kept in an elongated trap, typical for a single-beam optical dipole trap. We focus on the case of repulsive Bose-Fermi interaction and develop mean-field models to simulate the system over a wide range of repulsion strength. We further get analytical solutions in the regimes of phase separation and weak interaction. We obtain static density profiles and the frequency of the radial breathing mo…
Both mixtures of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and systems with atoms trapped in optical lattices have been intensely explored theoretically, mainly due to the exceptional developments on the experimental side. We investigate the properties of ultracold atomic impurities (bosons) immersed in a vortex lattice of a second Bose-condensed species. In contrast to the static optical-lattice configuration, the vortex lattice presents intrinsic dynamics given by its Tkachenko modes. These excitations induce additional correlations between the impurities, which consist in a long-range attractive pot…
By analyzing breathing mode of a Bose-Einstein condensate repulsively interacting with a polarized fermionic cloud, we further the understanding of a Bose-Fermi mixture recently realized by Lous et al. [\textit{Phys. Rev. Lett.} \textbf{120}, 243403]. We show that a hydrodynamic description of a domain wall between bosonic and fermionic atoms reproduces experimental data of Huang et al. [\textit{Phys. Rev. A} \textbf{99}, 041602(R)]. Two different types of interaction renormalization are explored, based on lowest order constrained variational and perturbation techniques. In order to replicate …
We unravel the nonequilibrium correlated quantum quench dynamics of an impurity traveling through a harmonically confined Bose-Einstein condensate in one-dimension. For weak repulsive interspecies interactions the impurity oscillates within the bosonic gas. At strong repulsions and depending on its prequench position the impurity moves towards an edge of the bosonic medium and subsequently equilibrates. This equilibration being present independently of the initial velocity, the position and the mass of the impurity is inherently related to the generation of entanglement in the many-body system…
We unravel the nonequilibrium dynamics of two fermionic impurities immersed in a one-dimensional bosonic gas following an interspecies interaction quench from weak to strong repulsions. Monitoring the temporal evolution of the single-particle density of each species we reveal the existence of four distinct dynamical regimes. For weak interspecies repulsions both species either perform a breathing motion or the impurity density splits into two parts which interact and disperse within the bosonic cloud. Turning to strong interactions we observe the formation of dark-bright states within the mean…
We investigate a system consisting of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate interacting dispersively with a Fabry-Perot optical cavity where the two components of the condensate are resonantly coupled to each other by another classical field. The key feature of this system is that the atomic motional degrees of freedom and the internal pseudo-spin degrees of freedom are coupled to the cavity field simultaneously, hence an effective spin-orbital coupling within the condensate is induced by the cavity. The interplay among the atomic center- of-mass motion, the atomic collective spin and the c…
We investigate inelastic collision dynamics of a single cold ion in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We observe rapid ion-atom-atom three-body recombination leading to formation of weakly bound molecular ions followed by secondary two-body molecule-atom collisions quenching the rovibrational states towards deeper binding energies. In contrast to previous studies exploiting hybrid ion traps, we work in an effectively field-free environment and generate a free low-energy ionic impurity directly from the atomic ensemble via Rydberg excitation and ionization. This allows us to implement an energy-resol…
We present a comprehensive discussion of the ground-state properties of dilute $D$-dimensional Bose gas interacting with a few static impurities. Assuming the short-ranged character of the boson-impurity interaction, we calculate the energy of three- and two-dimensional Bose systems with one and two impurities immersed.
We consider a mobile impurity immersed in a Bose gas at finite temperature. Using perturbation theory valid for weak coupling between the impurity and the bosons, we derive analytical results for the energy and damping of the impurity for low and high temperatures, as well as for temperatures close to the critical temperature $T_c$ for Bose-Einstein condensation. These results show that the properties of the impurity vary strongly with temperature. In particular, the energy exhibits a non-monotonic behavior close to $T_c$, and the damping rises sharply close to $T_c$. We argue that this behavi…
We investigate transport dynamics of a single low-energy ionic impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The impurity is implanted into the condensate starting from a single Rydberg excitation, which is ionized by a sequence of fast electric field pulses aiming to minimize the ion's initial kinetic energy. Using a small electric bias field, we study the subsequent collisional dynamics of the impurity subject to an external force. The fast ion-atom collision rate, stemming from the dense degenerate host gas and the large ion-atom scattering cross section, allows us to study a regime of frequent c…
When an impurity is immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate, impurity-boson interactions are expected to dress the impurity into a quasiparticle, the Bose polaron. We superimpose an ultracold atomic gas of $^{87}$Rb with a much lower density gas of fermionic $^{40}$K impurities. Through the use of a Feshbach resonance and RF spectroscopy, we characterize the energy, spectral width and lifetime of the resultant polaron on both the attractive and the repulsive branches in the strongly interacting regime. The width of the polaron in the attractive branch is narrow compared to its binding energy, e…
We investigate the problem of a single ion in a radio-frequency trap and immersed in an ultracold Bose gas either in a condensed or a non-condensed phase. We develop master equation formalism describing the sympathetic cooling and we determine the cooling rates of ions. We show that cold atomic reservoir modifies the stability diagram of the ion in the Paul trap creating the regions where the ion is either cooled or heated due to the energy quanta exchanged with the time-dependent potential.
We investigate the quantum phases of ultracold atoms trapped in a vortex lattice using a mixture of two bosonic species (A and B), in the presence of an artificial gauge field. Heavy atoms of species B are confined in the array of vortices generated in species A, and they are described through a Bose-Hubbard model. In contrast to the optical-lattice setups, the vortex lattice has an intrinsic dynamics, given by its Tkachenko modes. Including these quantum fluctuations in the effective model for B atoms yields an extended Bose-Hubbard model, with an additional "phonon"-mediated long-range attra…
We show that a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas that is immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate can undergo a transition to a crystal-like Mott state with regular spacing between the atoms without any externally imposed lattice potential. We characterize this phase transition as a function of the interspecies interaction and temperature of the TG gas, and show how it can be measured via accessible observables in cold atom experiments. We also develop an effective model that accurately describes the system in the pinned insulator state and which allows us to derive the critical temperature of the transi…
The properties of a dilute Bose gas with the non-Gaussian quenched disorder are analysed. Being more specific we have considered a system of bosons immersed in the classical bath consisting of the non-interacting particles with infinite mass. Making use of perturbation theory up to second order we have studied the impact of environment on the ground-state thermodynamic and superfluid characteristics of the Bose component.
By using simple and efficient method we discuss properties of a single impurity immersed in three-dimensional Bose gas with the interaction between particles tuned to unitary limit. Particularly, adopting the mean-field-like approximation we present the first estimations for the low-momentum parameters of the impurity spectrum, namely, the binding energy, the effective mass and the quasiparticle residue both for repulsive and attractive Bose polarons in the unitary gas.
We propose a scheme to obtain the Heisenberg-limited parameter estimation precision by immersing atoms in a thermally equilibrated quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate reservoir. We show that the collisions between the dipolar atoms and the immersed atoms can result in a controllable nonlinear interaction through tuning the relative strength and the sign of the dipolar and contact interaction. We find that the repulsive dipolar interaction reservoir is preferential for the spin squeezing and the appearance of an entangled non-Gaussian state. As a useful resource for quantum m…
We formulate a general scheme for calculation of thermodynamic properties of ideal Bose gas with microscopic number of static impurities immersed, when the system is loaded in the harmonic trapping potential with quasi-1D and quasi-2D configurations. The binding energy of a single impurity and a detailed study of the medium-induced Casimir-like forces between two impurities in trapped Bose gas are numerically calculated in wide range of temperatures and interaction strengths.
We propose a scheme to control quantum coherence of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by a single impurity atom immersed in the BEC. We show that the single impurity atom can act as a single atom valve (SAV) to control quantum coherence of the two-component BEC. It is demonstrated that the SAV can realize the on-demand control over quantum coherence at an arbitrary time. Specially, it is found that the SAV can also control higher-order quantum coherence of two-component BEC. We investigate the long-time evolution of quantum coherence of the two-component BEC. It is indicated that …
We exactly analyze, on the mean-field level, the low-momentum properties of a single impurity atom loaded in the dilute one-dimensional Bose gas with two- and three-body short-range interactions. Particularly the Bose polaron binding energy and the quasiparticle residue are calculated for the considered system in the broad region of parameters change. We also explore the generic mean-field formula for the polaron effective mass which was shown to depend on the density profile of bath particles with a motionless impurity immersed.
We study entanglement and squeezing of two uncoupled impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We treat them as two quantum Brownian particles interacting with a bath composed of the Bogoliubov modes of the condensate. The Langevin-like quantum stochastic equations derived exhibit memory effects. We study two scenarios: (i) In the absence of an external potential, we observe sudden death of entanglement; (ii) In the presence of an external harmonic potential, entanglement survives even at the asymptotic time limit. Our study considers experimentally tunable parameters.
The detailed study of the low-energy spectrum for a mobile impurity in the one-dimensional bosonic enviroment is performed. Particularly we have considered only two analytically accessible limits, namely, the case of an impurity immersed in a dilute Bose gas, where one can use many-body perturbation techniques for low-dimensional bosonic systemsm and the case of the Tonks-Girardeau gas, for which the usual fermionic diagrammatic expansion up to the second order is applied.
We study the properties of an impurity immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas, i.e., of a Bose polaron. In the perturbatively-tractable of limit weak impurity-boson interactions many of its properties are known to depend only on the scattering length. Here we demonstrate that for strong (unitary) impurity-boson interactions all static quasiproperties of a Bose polaron in a dilute Bose gas, such as its energy, its residue, its Tan's contact and the number of bosons trapped nearby the impurity, depend on the impurity-boson potential via a single parameter.
We discuss properties of a single impurity atom immersed in the spin-$1/2$ dilute Fermi gas with equal populations of two species in the deep Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) phase. In this limit, when an almost undepleted BEC of the tightly bound molecules of spin-up and spin-down fermions is formed, we calculate the parameters of an impurity spectrum. It is justified that the leading-order contribution to the impurity energy, while being determined by the two- and three-body scattering processes, is dominated by the former ones.
The properties of impurity immersed in the dilute $D$-dimensional Bose gas at temperatures close to the second-order phase transition point are considered. Particularly by means of the $1/N$-expansion we calculated the leading-order polaron energy and the damping rate in the limit of vanishing boson-boson interaction. It is show that the perturbative effective mass and the quasiparticle residue diverge logarithmically in the long-length limit signalling the non-analytic behavior of impurity spectrum and a non-pole structure of a polaron Green's function in the infrared region, respectively.
The properties of a Bose polaron immersed in a dilute two-dimensional medium at finite temperatures are discussed. Assuming that the impurity is weakly-coupled to the bath particles we have perturbatively calculated the polaron energy, effective mass, quasiparticle residue and damping rate. The parameters of impurity spectrum are found to be well-defined in the whole temperature region whereas the pole structure of the impurity Green's function is visible only at absolute zero. At any finite temperatures the quasiparticle residue is logarithmically divergent signalling of the branch-cut behavi…
We exactly calculate the full temperature dependence of Casimir-like forces appearing between two and three static impurities loaded in the ideal Bose gas below the Bose-Einstein condensation transition point. Assuming the short-ranged character of the boson-impurity interaction, the calculation procedure presented here can be easily extended on a Bose system with an arbitrary number of impurities immersed.
The detailed mean-field treatment of the Bose polaron problem in two and three dimensions is presented. Particularly, assuming that impurity is immersed in the dilute Bose gas and interacts with bosons via the hard-sphere two-body potential, we calculate the low-momentum parameters of its spectrum, namely, the binding energy and the effective mass. The limits of applicability of the mean-field approach to a problem of mobile impurity in Bose-Einstein condensates are discussed by comparing our results to the Monte Carlo simulations data.
We study an impurity immersed in the mixture of Bose ultracold gases in the regime where a quantum droplet exists. The quasi-one-dimensional geometry is considered. We find an effective attractive potential that acts by the quantum droplet onto the impurity. The bound states of the impurity in this potential are investigated. These impurity bound states can provide potential probes for the presence of quantum fluctuations effects on the droplet properties. In the case of strong impurity-BEC coupling, we study the properties of the nonlinear local modes on the impurity induced by the quantum fl…
We calculate the phase diagram of identical fermions in a 2-dimensional (2D) lattice immersed in a 3D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The fermions exchange density fluctuations in the BEC, which gives rise to an attractive induced interaction. The resulting zero temperature phase diagram exhibits topological $p_x+ip_y$ superfluid phases as well as a phase separation region. We show how to use the flexibility of the Bose-Fermi mixture to tune the induced interaction, so that it maximises the pairing between nearest neighbour sites, whereas phase separation originating from long range interactio…
Recently, two independent experiments reported the observation of long-lived polarons in a Bose-Einstein condensate, providing an excellent setting to study the generic scenario of a mobile impurity interacting with a quantum reservoir. Here, we expand the experimental analysis by disentangling the effects of trap inhomogeneities and the many-body continuum in one of these experiments. This makes it possible to extract the energy of the polaron at a well-defined density as a function of the interaction strength. Comparisons with quantum Monte-Carlo as well as diagrammatic calculations show goo…
We consider the tunneling properties of a single fermionic impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. For strong boson-fermion interaction, we show the existence of a tunnel resonance where a large number of bosons and the fermion tunnel simultaneously. We give analytical expressions for the lineshape of the resonance using degenerate Brillouin-Wigner theory. We finally compute the time-dependent dynamics of the mixture. Using the fermionic tunnel resonances as beam splitter for wave-functions, we construct a Mach-Zehnder interferometer that allows complete pop…
We study the Casimir potential between two impurities immersed in a spin-orbit coupled BoseEinstein condensate (BEC) with plane-wave order. We find that, by exchanging the virtual phonons/excitations, a remarkable anisotropic oscillating potential with both positive and negative parts can be induced between the impurities, with the period of the oscillation depending on the spin-orbit coupling strength. As a consequence, this would inevitably lead to a non-central Casimir force, which can be tuned by varying the strength of spin-orbit coupling . These results are elucidated for BECs with one-d…
We study a resonant Bose-Fermi mixture at zero temperature by using the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo method. We explore the system from weak to strong boson-fermion interaction, for different concentrations of the bosons relative to the fermion component. We focus on the case where the boson density $n_B$ is smaller than the fermion density $n_F$, for which a first-order quantum phase transition is found from a state with condensed bosons immersed in a Fermi sea, to a Fermi-Fermi mixture of composite fermions and unpaired fermions. We obtain the equation of state and the phase diagram, and…
Cooper pairing caused by an induced interaction represents a paradigm in our description of fermionic superfluidity. Here, we present a strong coupling theory for the critical temperature of $p$-wave pairing between spin polarised fermions immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The fermions interact via the exchange of phonons in the condensate, and our self-consistent theory takes into account the full frequency/momentum dependence of the resulting induced interaction. We demonstrate that both retardation and self-energy effects are important for obtaining a reliable value of the critical te…
We consider self-localization of a small number of Bose particles immersed in a large homogeneous superfluid mixture of fermions in three and one dimensional spaces. Bosons distort the density of surrounding fermions and create a potential well where they can form a bound state analogous to a small polaron state. In the three dimensional volume we observe the self-localization for repulsive interactions between bosons and fermions. In the one dimensional case bosons self-localize as well as for attractive interactions forming, together with a pair of fermions at the bottom of the Fermi sea, a …
We propose and investigate a pump-probe spectroscopy scheme to unveil the time-resolved dynamics of fermionic or bosonic impurities immersed in a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. In this scheme a pump pulse initially transfers the impurities from a noninteracting to a resonantly interacting spin-state and, after a finite time in which the system evolves freely, the probe pulse reverses this transition. This directly allows to monitor the nonequilibrium dynamics of the impurities as the dynamical formation of coherent attractive or repulsive Bose polarons and signatures of their i…
By means of Quantum Monte Carlo methods we calculate the binding energy of an impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate at T = 0. The focus is on the attractive branch of the Bose polaron and on the role played by the mass imbalance between the impurity and the surrounding particles. For an impurity resonantly coupled to the bath, we investigate the dependence of the binding energy on the mass ratio and on the interaction strength within the medium. In particular, we determine the equation of state in the case of a static (infinite mass) impurity, where three-body correlations are irrele…
We unravel the polaronic properties of impurities immersed in a correlated trapped one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Bose mixture. This setup allows for the impurities to couple either attractively or repulsively to a specific host, thus offering a highly flexible platform for steering the emergent polaronic properties. Specifically, the polaronic residue peak and strength of induced interactions can be controlled by varying the coupling of the impurities to the individual bosonic components. In particular, it is possible to maintain the quasiparticle character for larger interaction strengths as comp…
We present a theoretical study of the BEC-BCS crossover in the Bose-Einstein-Condensate regime (BEC), in the case of an unequal number of fermions of two species. We take full account of the composite nature of the dimers made of fermions. In the limit of low densities, we calculate the ground state energy of the system, or equivalentely the chemical potentials of each species as well as the one-particle gap and the energy of an "impurity" immersed in a Fermi sea. For the chemical potentials we go up to order (density)^{4/3}.The results found involve the exact atom-dimer a_{AD} and dimer-dimer…
We study the ground state properties and nonequilibrium dynamics of two spinor bosonic impurities immersed in a one-dimensional bosonic gas upon applying an interspecies interaction quench. For the ground state of two non-interacting impurities we reveal signatures of attractive induced interactions in both cases of attractive or repulsive interspecies interactions, while a weak impurity-impurity repulsion forces the impurities to stay apart. Turning to the quench dynamics we inspect the time-evolution of the contrast unveiling the existence, dynamical deformation and the orthogonality catastr…
We propose to use a one-dimensional system consisting of identical fermions in a periodically driven lattice immersed in a Bose gas, to realise topological superfluid phases with Chern numbers larger than 1. The bosons mediate an attractive induced interaction between the fermions, and we derive a simple formula to analyse the topological properties of the resulting pairing. When the coherence length of the bosons is large compared to the lattice spacing and there is a significant next-nearest neighbour hopping for the fermions, the system can realise a superfluid with Chern number +/- 2. We s…
An impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate is no longer accurately described by the Fröhlich Hamiltonian as the coupling between the impurity and the boson bath gets stronger. We study the dominant effects of the two-phonon terms beyond the Fröhlich model on the ground-state properties of the polaron using Feynman's variational path-integral approach. The previously reported discrepancy in the effective mass between the renormalization group approach and this theory is shown to be absent in the beyond-Fröhlich model on the positive side of the Feshbach resonance. Self-trapping, charact…
The well-known Yukawa and Efimov potentials are two different mediated interaction potentials. The first one arises in quantum field theory from the exchange of virtual particles. The second one is mediated by a real particle resonantly interacting with two other particles. This Letter shows how two impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate can exhibit both phenomena. For a weak impurity-boson attractive interactionattraction with the condensate, the two impurities form two polarons that interact through a weak Yukawa attraction mediated by virtual excitations. For a resonant attractio…
We investigate the quantum dynamics of a harmonically trapped particle (e.g. an ion) that is immersed in a Bose--Einstein condensate. The ultracold environment acts as a refrigerator, and thus, the influence on the motion of the ion is dissipative. We study the fully coupled quantum dynamics of particle and Bose gas in a linearized regime, treating the quasi-particle excitations of the gas as a (non-Markovian) environment for the particle dynamics. The density operator of the latter follows a known non-Markovian master equation with a highly non-trivial bath correlation function that we determ…
We propose a new protocol to examine many-polaron properties in a cold atom experiment. Initially, polaronic clouds are prepared around the opposite edges of a majority gas cloud. After time evolution, the collision of two clouds exhibits various polaronic effects. To see how {\it collective} properties of many polarons with mediated interactions appear in the case in which the impurity and majority gases are composed of mass-balanced fermions with different spin components, we perform a nonlinear hydrodynamic simulation for collisional dynamics of two Fermi polaronic clouds. We found that the…
