We investigate inelastic collision dynamics of a single cold ion in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We observe rapid ion-atom-atom three-body recombination leading to formation of weakly bound molecular ions followed by secondary two-body molecule-atom collisions quenching the rovibrational states towards deeper binding energies. In contrast to previous studies exploiting hybrid ion traps, we work in an effectively field-free environment and generate a free low-energy ionic impurity directly from the atomic ensemble via Rydberg excitation and ionization. This allows us to implement an energy-resolved field-dissociation technique to trace the relaxation dynamics of the recombination products. Our observations are in good agreement with numerical simulations based on Langevin capture dynamics and provide complementary means to study stability and reaction dynamics of ionic impurities in ultracold quantum gases.
In this paper, we study the problem of an impurity with infinite mass and the Casimir force between two impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Our calculation results shows that the Casimir force decays exponentially in distance at large distance.
We establish an experimental method for a detailed investigation of inelastic collisional properties between ytterbium (Yb) in the metastable ${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$ state and ground state lithium (Li). By combining an optical lattice and a direct excitation to the ${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$ state we achieve high selectivity on the collisional partners. Using this method we determine inelastic loss coefficients in collisions between $^{174}$Yb(${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$) with magnetic sublevels of $m_J=0$ and $-2$ and ground state $^6$Li to be $(4.4\pm0.3)\times10^{-11}~\mathrm{cm}^3/\mathrm{s}$ and $(4.7\pm0.8)\t…
We have created a triply quantum degenerate mixture of bosonic $^{41}$K and two fermionic species $^{40}$K and $^6$Li. The boson is shown to be an efficient coolant for the two fermions, spurring hopes for the observation of fermionic superfluids with imbalanced masses. We observe multiple heteronuclear Feshbach resonances, in particular a wide s-wave resonance for the combination $^{41}$K-$^{40}$K, opening up studies of strongly interacting {\it isotopic} Bose-Fermi mixtures. For large imbalance, we enter the polaronic regime of dressed impurities immersed in a bosonic or fermionic bath.
We investigate transport dynamics of a single low-energy ionic impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The impurity is implanted into the condensate starting from a single Rydberg excitation, which is ionized by a sequence of fast electric field pulses aiming to minimize the ion's initial kinetic energy. Using a small electric bias field, we study the subsequent collisional dynamics of the impurity subject to an external force. The fast ion-atom collision rate, stemming from the dense degenerate host gas and the large ion-atom scattering cross section, allows us to study a regime of frequent c…
Both mixtures of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and systems with atoms trapped in optical lattices have been intensely explored theoretically, mainly due to the exceptional developments on the experimental side. We investigate the properties of ultracold atomic impurities (bosons) immersed in a vortex lattice of a second Bose-condensed species. In contrast to the static optical-lattice configuration, the vortex lattice presents intrinsic dynamics given by its Tkachenko modes. These excitations induce additional correlations between the impurities, which consist in a long-range attractive pot…
By analyzing breathing mode of a Bose-Einstein condensate repulsively interacting with a polarized fermionic cloud, we further the understanding of a Bose-Fermi mixture recently realized by Lous et al. [\textit{Phys. Rev. Lett.} \textbf{120}, 243403]. We show that a hydrodynamic description of a domain wall between bosonic and fermionic atoms reproduces experimental data of Huang et al. [\textit{Phys. Rev. A} \textbf{99}, 041602(R)]. Two different types of interaction renormalization are explored, based on lowest order constrained variational and perturbation techniques. In order to replicate …
We prepare a superposition of two motional states by addressing lithium atoms immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium with a species-selective potential. The evolution of the superposition state is characterized by the populations of the constituent states as well as their coherence. The latter we extract employing a novel scheme analogous to the spin-echo technique. Comparing the results directly to measurements on freely-evolving fermions allows us to isolate the decoherence effects induced by the bath. In our system, the decoherence time is close to the maximal possible value since…
We unravel the nonequilibrium correlated quantum quench dynamics of an impurity traveling through a harmonically confined Bose-Einstein condensate in one-dimension. For weak repulsive interspecies interactions the impurity oscillates within the bosonic gas. At strong repulsions and depending on its prequench position the impurity moves towards an edge of the bosonic medium and subsequently equilibrates. This equilibration being present independently of the initial velocity, the position and the mass of the impurity is inherently related to the generation of entanglement in the many-body system…
We unravel the nonequilibrium dynamics of two fermionic impurities immersed in a one-dimensional bosonic gas following an interspecies interaction quench from weak to strong repulsions. Monitoring the temporal evolution of the single-particle density of each species we reveal the existence of four distinct dynamical regimes. For weak interspecies repulsions both species either perform a breathing motion or the impurity density splits into two parts which interact and disperse within the bosonic cloud. Turning to strong interactions we observe the formation of dark-bright states within the mean…
Hybrid ion-atom systems provide an excellent platform for studies of state-resolved quantum chemistry at low temperatures, where quantum effects may be prevalent. Here we study theoretically the process of vibrational relaxation of an initially weakly bound molecular ion due to collisions with the background gas atoms. We show that this inelastic process is governed by the universal long-range part of the interaction potential, which allows for using simplified model potentials applicable to multiple atomic species. The product distribution after the collision can be estimated by making use of…
We studied spin-dependent two-body inelastic collisions in F=2 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensates both experimentally and theoretically. The 87Rb condensates were confined in an optical trap and selectively prepared in various spin states in the F=2 manifold at a magnetic field of 3.0 G. Measured atom loss rates are found to depend on spin states of colliding atoms. We measured two fundamental loss coefficients for two-body inelastic collisions with the total spin of 0 and 2; the coefficients determine loss rates for all the spin pairs. The experimental results for mixtures of all the spin combina…
We devise a microscopic scattering approach to probe the excitation spectrum of a Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that the experimentally accessible scattering cross section exhibits universal Ericson fluctuations, with characteristic properties rooted in the underlying classical field equations.
We consider a mobile impurity immersed in a Bose gas at finite temperature. Using perturbation theory valid for weak coupling between the impurity and the bosons, we derive analytical results for the energy and damping of the impurity for low and high temperatures, as well as for temperatures close to the critical temperature $T_c$ for Bose-Einstein condensation. These results show that the properties of the impurity vary strongly with temperature. In particular, the energy exhibits a non-monotonic behavior close to $T_c$, and the damping rises sharply close to $T_c$. We argue that this behavi…
We investigate the quantum phases of ultracold atoms trapped in a vortex lattice using a mixture of two bosonic species (A and B), in the presence of an artificial gauge field. Heavy atoms of species B are confined in the array of vortices generated in species A, and they are described through a Bose-Hubbard model. In contrast to the optical-lattice setups, the vortex lattice has an intrinsic dynamics, given by its Tkachenko modes. Including these quantum fluctuations in the effective model for B atoms yields an extended Bose-Hubbard model, with an additional "phonon"-mediated long-range attra…
We investigate the problem of a single ion in a radio-frequency trap and immersed in an ultracold Bose gas either in a condensed or a non-condensed phase. We develop master equation formalism describing the sympathetic cooling and we determine the cooling rates of ions. We show that cold atomic reservoir modifies the stability diagram of the ion in the Paul trap creating the regions where the ion is either cooled or heated due to the energy quanta exchanged with the time-dependent potential.
We study the diffusive behavior of a Bose polaron immersed in a coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). Polaron superdiffuses if it couples in the same manner to both components, i.e. either attractively or repulsively to both of them. This is the same behavior as that of an impurity immersed in a single BEC. Conversely, the polaron exhibits a transient nontrivial subdiffusive behavior if it couples attractively to one of the components and repulsively to the other. The anomalous diffusion exponent and the duration of the subdiffusive interval can be controlled with th…
Correlation properties in ultracold Fermi gas with negative scattering length and its impact on the three-body recombination is analyzed. We find that Cooper pairing enhances the recombination rate in contrast to the decrease of this rate accompanying Bose-Einstein condensation in a Bose gas. This trend is characteristic for all interval of temperatures T<Tc.
We theoretically study the static and dynamic behavior of a BEC immersed in a large Fermi sea of ultracold atoms under conditions of tunable interspecies interaction. The degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture is kept in an elongated trap, typical for a single-beam optical dipole trap. We focus on the case of repulsive Bose-Fermi interaction and develop mean-field models to simulate the system over a wide range of repulsion strength. We further get analytical solutions in the regimes of phase separation and weak interaction. We obtain static density profiles and the frequency of the radial breathing mo…
We report the first realization of a quantum degenerate mixture of bosonic $^{87}$Rb and fermionic $^{171}$Yb atoms in a hybrid optical dipole trap with a tunable, species-dependent trapping potential. $^{87}$Rb is shown to be a viable refrigerant for the non-interacting $^{171}$Yb atoms, cooling up to $2.4 \times 10^5$ $^{171}$Yb atoms to a temperature of $T/T_F = 0.16(2) $ while simultaneously forming a $^{87}$Rb BEC of $3.5 \times 10^5$ atoms. Furthermore we demonstrate our ability to independently tailor the potentials for each species, which paves the way for studying impurities immersed …
Preparation of molecular quantum gas promises novel applications including quantum control of chemical reactions, precision measurements, quantum simulation and quantum information processing. Experimental preparation of colder and denser molecular samples, however, is frequently hindered by fast inelastic collisions that heat and deplete the population. Here we report the formation of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of spinning $g-$wave molecules by inducing pairing interactions in an atomic condensate. The trap geometry and the low temperature of the molecules help reducing …
By using simple and efficient method we discuss properties of a single impurity immersed in three-dimensional Bose gas with the interaction between particles tuned to unitary limit. Particularly, adopting the mean-field-like approximation we present the first estimations for the low-momentum parameters of the impurity spectrum, namely, the binding energy, the effective mass and the quasiparticle residue both for repulsive and attractive Bose polarons in the unitary gas.
We study experimentally and theoretically the dynamics of apparent dark soliton stripes in an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that for the trapping strengths corresponding to our experimental setup, the transverse confinement along one of the tight directions is not strong enough to arrest the formation of solitonic vortices or vortex rings. These solitonic vortices and vortex rings, when integrated along the transverse direction, appear as dark soliton stripes along the longitudinal direction thereby hiding their true character. The latter significantly modifies the interaction dy…
Rydberg atoms immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate interact with the quantum gas via electron-atom and ion-atom interaction. To suppress the typically dominant electron-neutral interaction, Rydberg states with principal quantum number up to $n = 190$ are excited from a dense and tightly trapped micron-sized condensate. This allows us to explore a regime where the Rydberg orbit exceeds the size of the atomic sample by far. In this case, a detailed lineshape analysis of the Rydberg excitation spectrum provides clear evidence for ion-atom interaction at temperatures well below a microkelvin. Ou…
It is shown that the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a dissipative periodic potential, nonlinear losses and linear pump allow for the existence of stable nonlinear Bloch states which are attractors. The model describes a Bose-Einstein condensate with inelastic two- and three-body interactions loaded in an optical lattice with losses due to inelastic interactions of the atoms with photons.
We exactly analyze, on the mean-field level, the low-momentum properties of a single impurity atom loaded in the dilute one-dimensional Bose gas with two- and three-body short-range interactions. Particularly the Bose polaron binding energy and the quasiparticle residue are calculated for the considered system in the broad region of parameters change. We also explore the generic mean-field formula for the polaron effective mass which was shown to depend on the density profile of bath particles with a motionless impurity immersed.
We report on controlled doping of an ultracold Rb gas with single neutral Cs impurity atoms. Elastic two-body collisions lead to a rapid thermalization of the impurity inside the Rb gas, representing the first realization of an ultracold gas doped with a precisely known number of impurity atoms interacting via s-wave collisions. Inelastic interactions are restricted to a single three-body recombination channel in a highly controlled and pure setting, which allows to determine the Rb-Rb-Cs three-body loss rate with unprecedented precision. Our results pave the way for a coherently interacting h…
We study the effect of Efimov physics (in the few-body sector) to the spectral response of Bose polaron, a many-body system consisting of an impurity immersed in a bath of bosonic atoms. We find that the Efimov correlation can be greatly enhanced by increasing the mass ratio between the bosons and the impurity, which results in visible signatures in the rf spectrum of the polaron. Using a diagrammatic approach up to the third-order virial expansion, we show how the mass imbalance and the enhanced three-body effect modify the line shape and the width of the polaron spectrum. Moreover, we study …
We study the properties of an impurity immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas, i.e., of a Bose polaron. In the perturbatively-tractable of limit weak impurity-boson interactions many of its properties are known to depend only on the scattering length. Here we demonstrate that for strong (unitary) impurity-boson interactions all static quasiproperties of a Bose polaron in a dilute Bose gas, such as its energy, its residue, its Tan's contact and the number of bosons trapped nearby the impurity, depend on the impurity-boson potential via a single parameter.
We discuss properties of a single impurity atom immersed in the spin-$1/2$ dilute Fermi gas with equal populations of two species in the deep Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) phase. In this limit, when an almost undepleted BEC of the tightly bound molecules of spin-up and spin-down fermions is formed, we calculate the parameters of an impurity spectrum. It is justified that the leading-order contribution to the impurity energy, while being determined by the two- and three-body scattering processes, is dominated by the former ones.
The properties of impurity immersed in the dilute $D$-dimensional Bose gas at temperatures close to the second-order phase transition point are considered. Particularly by means of the $1/N$-expansion we calculated the leading-order polaron energy and the damping rate in the limit of vanishing boson-boson interaction. It is show that the perturbative effective mass and the quasiparticle residue diverge logarithmically in the long-length limit signalling the non-analytic behavior of impurity spectrum and a non-pole structure of a polaron Green's function in the infrared region, respectively.
The full momentum dependence of spectrum of a point-like impurity immersed in a dilute one-dimensional Bose gas is calculated on the mean-field level. In particular we elaborate, to the finite-momentum Bose polaron, the path-integral approach whose semi-classical approximation leads to the conventional mean-field treatment of the problem while quantum corrections can be easily accounted by standard loop expansion techniques. The extracted low-energy parameters of impurity spectrum, namely, the binding energy and the effective mass of particle, are shown to be in qualitative agreement with the …
We propose to track position and velocity of mobile Rydberg excited impurity atoms through the elastic interactions of the Rydberg electron with a host condensate. Tracks first occur in the condensate phase, but are then naturally converted to features in the condensate density or momentum distribution. The condensate thus acts analogous to the cloud or bubble chambers in the early days of elementary particle physics. The technique will be useful for exploring Rydberg-Rydberg scattering, rare inelastic processes involving the Rydberg impurities, coherence in Rydberg motion and forces exerted b…
We exactly calculate the full temperature dependence of Casimir-like forces appearing between two and three static impurities loaded in the ideal Bose gas below the Bose-Einstein condensation transition point. Assuming the short-ranged character of the boson-impurity interaction, the calculation procedure presented here can be easily extended on a Bose system with an arbitrary number of impurities immersed.
The detailed mean-field treatment of the Bose polaron problem in two and three dimensions is presented. Particularly, assuming that impurity is immersed in the dilute Bose gas and interacts with bosons via the hard-sphere two-body potential, we calculate the low-momentum parameters of its spectrum, namely, the binding energy and the effective mass. The limits of applicability of the mean-field approach to a problem of mobile impurity in Bose-Einstein condensates are discussed by comparing our results to the Monte Carlo simulations data.
Advancing our understanding of non-equilibrium phenomena in quantum many-body systems remains among the greatest challenges in physics. Here, we report on the experimental observation of a paradigmatic many-body problem, namely the non-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum impurity immersed in a bosonic environment. We use an interferometric technique to prepare coherent superposition states of atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensate with a small impurity-state component, and monitor the evolution of such quantum superpositions into polaronic quasiparticles. These results offer a systematic picture of…
We produce ${^{84}\mathrm{Sr}_2}$ molecules using Bose-enhanced Raman photoassociation. We apply the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) technique on a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to produce more than $8 \times 10^3$ ultracold molecules. This chemical reaction is only made possible because of the Bose enhancement of the optical transition dipole moment between the initial atomic state and an intermediate molecular state. We study the effect of Bose enhancement by measuring the transition Rabi frequency in a BEC and by comparing it with measurements for two atoms in sites of a Mott i…
In this paper, we investigate the impact of higher-order interactions on the modulational instability (MI) of Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) immersed in an optical lattice potential. We derive the new variational equations for the time evolution of amplitude, phase of modulational perturbation, and effective potential for the system. Through effective potential techniques, we find that high density attractive and repulsive BECs exhibit new character with direct impact over the MI phenomenon. Results of intensive numerical investigations are presented and their convergence with the above semi…
We study an impurity immersed in the mixture of Bose ultracold gases in the regime where a quantum droplet exists. The quasi-one-dimensional geometry is considered. We find an effective attractive potential that acts by the quantum droplet onto the impurity. The bound states of the impurity in this potential are investigated. These impurity bound states can provide potential probes for the presence of quantum fluctuations effects on the droplet properties. In the case of strong impurity-BEC coupling, we study the properties of the nonlinear local modes on the impurity induced by the quantum fl…
We have achieved Bose-Einstein condensation of $^{40}$Ca, the first for an alkaline earth element. The influence of elastic and inelastic collisions associated with the large ground state s-wave scattering length of $^{40}$Ca was measured. From these findings, an optimized loading and cooling scheme was developed that allowed us to condense about $2 \cdot 10^4$ atoms after laser cooling in a two-stage magneto-optical trap and subsequent forced evaporation in a crossed dipole trap within less than 3 s. The condensation of an alkaline earth element opens novel opportunities for precision measure…
We consider the quantum mechanical many-body problem of a single impurity particle immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas. The impurity interacts with the bosons via a two-body potential. We study the Hamiltonian of this system in the mean-field limit and rigorously show that, at low energies, the problem is well described by the Fröhlich polaron model.
Using Boltzmann's equation, we study the effect of three-body losses on the momentum distribution of a homogeneous unitary Bose gas in the dilute limit where quantum correlations are negligible. We calculate the momentum distribution of the gas and show that inelastic collisions are quantitatively as important as a second order virial correction.
We use recently developed angulon theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 203001 (2015)] to study the rotational spectrum of a cyanide molecular anion immersed into Bose-Einstein condensates of rubidium and strontium. Based on $\textit {ab initio}$ potential energy surfaces, we provide a detailed study of the rotational Lamb shift and many-body-induced fine structure which arise due to dressing of molecular rotation by a field of phonon excitations. We demonstrate that the magnitude of these effects is large enough in order to be observed in modern experiments on cold molecular ions. Furthermore, we int…
We calculate the phase diagram of identical fermions in a 2-dimensional (2D) lattice immersed in a 3D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The fermions exchange density fluctuations in the BEC, which gives rise to an attractive induced interaction. The resulting zero temperature phase diagram exhibits topological $p_x+ip_y$ superfluid phases as well as a phase separation region. We show how to use the flexibility of the Bose-Fermi mixture to tune the induced interaction, so that it maximises the pairing between nearest neighbour sites, whereas phase separation originating from long range interactio…
We consider the tunneling properties of a single fermionic impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. For strong boson-fermion interaction, we show the existence of a tunnel resonance where a large number of bosons and the fermion tunnel simultaneously. We give analytical expressions for the lineshape of the resonance using degenerate Brillouin-Wigner theory. We finally compute the time-dependent dynamics of the mixture. Using the fermionic tunnel resonances as beam splitter for wave-functions, we construct a Mach-Zehnder interferometer that allows complete pop…
We study the Casimir potential between two impurities immersed in a spin-orbit coupled BoseEinstein condensate (BEC) with plane-wave order. We find that, by exchanging the virtual phonons/excitations, a remarkable anisotropic oscillating potential with both positive and negative parts can be induced between the impurities, with the period of the oscillation depending on the spin-orbit coupling strength. As a consequence, this would inevitably lead to a non-central Casimir force, which can be tuned by varying the strength of spin-orbit coupling . These results are elucidated for BECs with one-d…
We report the realization of a BEC of metastable helium-4 atoms (4He*) in an all optical potential. Up to 10^5 spin polarized 4He* atoms are condensed in an optical dipole trap formed from a single, focused, vertically propagating far off-resonance laser beam. The vertical trap geometry is chosen to best match the resolution characteristics of a delay-line anode micro-channel plate detector capable of registering single He* atoms. We also confirm the instability of certain spin state combinations of 4He* to two-body inelastic processes, which necessarily affects the scope of future experiments…
Recent measurements of Efimov resonances in a number of ultracold atom species have revealed an unexpected universality, in which three-body scattering properties are determined by the van der Waals length of the two-body interaction potential. To investigate whether this universality extends to heteronuclear mixtures, we measure loss rate coefficients in an ultracold trapped gas of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms. We find an Efimov-like resonance in the rate of inelastic collisions between $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb Feshbach molecules and $^{87}$Rb atoms. However, we do not observe any Efimov-related res…
We consider a quantum impurity immersed in a dipolar Bose Einstein condensate and study the properties of the emerging polaron. We calculate the energy, effective mass and quasi-particle residue of the dipolar polaron and investigate their behaviour with respect to the strength of zero-range contact and a long-range dipolar interactions among the condensate atoms and with the impurity. While quantum fluctuations in the case of pure contact interactions typically lead to an increase of the polaron energy, dipole-dipole interactions are shown to cause a sign reversal. The described signatures of…
We investigate the dynamical instability of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with higher-order interactions immersed in an optical lattice with weak driving harmonic potential. For this, we compute both analytically and numerically a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation with higher-order nonlinearity and external potentials generated by magnetic and optical fields. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive the ordinary differential equations for the time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbation. Through an effective potential, we obtain the modulational in…
We study entanglement and squeezing of two uncoupled impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We treat them as two quantum Brownian particles interacting with a bath composed of the Bogoliubov modes of the condensate. The Langevin-like quantum stochastic equations derived exhibit memory effects. We study two scenarios: (i) In the absence of an external potential, we observe sudden death of entanglement; (ii) In the presence of an external harmonic potential, entanglement survives even at the asymptotic time limit. Our study considers experimentally tunable parameters.
We develop a systematic perturbation theory for the quasiparticle properties of a single impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Analytical results are derived for the impurity energy, the effective mass, and residue to third order in the impurity-boson scattering length. The energy is shown to depend logarithmically on the scattering length to third order, whereas the residue and effective mass are given by analytical power series. When the boson-boson scattering length equals the boson-impurity scattering length, the energy has the same structure as that of a weakly interacting Bose…
Coarsening dynamics theory has successfully described the equilibration of a broad class of systems.By studying the relaxation of a periodic array of microcondensates immersed in a Fermi gas which can mediate long-range spin interactions to simulate frustrated classical magnets, we show that coarsening dynamics can be suppressed by geometrical frustration. The system is found to eventually approach a metastable state which is robust against random field noise and characterized by finite correlation lengths with the emergence of topologically stable Z2 vortices. We find universal scaling laws w…
We show that a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas that is immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate can undergo a transition to a crystal-like Mott state with regular spacing between the atoms without any externally imposed lattice potential. We characterize this phase transition as a function of the interspecies interaction and temperature of the TG gas, and show how it can be measured via accessible observables in cold atom experiments. We also develop an effective model that accurately describes the system in the pinned insulator state and which allows us to derive the critical temperature of the transi…
We investigate the interaction of a laser-cooled trapped ion (Ba$^+$ or Rb$^+$) with an optically confined $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The system features interesting dynamics of the ion and the atom cloud as determined by their collisions and their motion in their respective traps. Elastic as well as inelastic processes are observed and their respective cross sections are determined. We demonstrate that a single ion can be used to probe the density profile of an ultracold atom cloud.
