We study an impurity immersed in the mixture of Bose ultracold gases in the regime where a quantum droplet exists. The quasi-one-dimensional geometry is considered. We find an effective attractive potential that acts by the quantum droplet onto the impurity. The bound states of the impurity in this potential are investigated. These impurity bound states can provide potential probes for the presence of quantum fluctuations effects on the droplet properties. In the case of strong impurity-BEC coupling, we study the properties of the nonlinear local modes on the impurity induced by the quantum fluctuations.
In this article we develop the framework to describe Bose-Fermi mixtures of magnetic atoms, focusing on the interaction of bosonic self-bound dipolar quantum droplets with a small number of fermions. We find an attractive interaction potential due to the dipolar interaction with several bound states, which can be occupied by one fermion each, resulting in a very weak back-action on the bosons. We conclude, that these impurities might act as unique probes giving access to inherent properties of dipolar quantum droplets.
We analytically calculate the leading quantum corrections of the ground-state energy of two- and one-dimensional weakly interacting Rabi-coupled Bose-Bose mixtures in the frame of the Bogoliubov approximation. We show that to repulsive intraspecies and attractive interspecies interactions, the effect of quantum fluctuations favors the formation of self-bound droplets. These liquidlike states are crucially affected by the Rabi coupling, leading thus to the appearance of a quantum instability. We derive meaningful formulas to describe the droplet phase in the one-dimensional case.
We demonstrate the existence of quantum droplets in two-component one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard chains. The droplets exist for any strength of repulsive intra-species interactions provided they are balanced by comparable attractive inter-species interactions. The ground-state phase diagram is presented and the different phases are characterized by examining the density profile and off-diagonal one- and two-body correlation functions. A rich variety of phases is found, including atomic superfluid gases, atomic superfluid droplets, pair superfluid droplets, pair superfluid gases and a Mott-insula…
We report on the formation of heteronuclear quantum droplets in an attractive bosonic mixture of 41K and 87Rb. We observe long-lived self-bound states, both in free space and in an optical waveguide. In the latter case, the dynamics under the effect of a species-dependent force confirms their bound nature. By tuning the interactions from the weakly to the strongly attractive regime, we study the transition from expanding to localized states, in both geometries. We compare the experimental results with beyond mean-field theory and we find a good agreement in the full range of explored interacti…
We explore the properties of weakly bound bosonic states in the strongly interacting regime. Combining a correlated-Gaussian (CG) basis set expansion with a complex scaling method, we extract the energies and structural properties of bosonic cluster states with $N\le6$ for different two-body potentials. The identification of five- and six-body resonances attached to an excited Efimov trimer provides strong support to the premise of Efimov universality in bosonic systems. Our study also reveals a rich structure of bosonic cluster states. Besides the lowest cluster states which behave as bosonic…
We use fidelity susceptibility to calculate quantum critical scaling exponents for a system consisting of $N$ identical bosons interacting with a single impurity atom in a double well potential (bosonic Josephson junction). Above a critical value of the boson-impurity interaction energy there is a spontaneous breaking of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry corresponding to a second order quantum phase transition from a balanced to an imbalanced number of particles in either the left or right hand well. We show that the exponents match those in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick and Dicke models suggesting that the …
We show that a single impurity embedded in a cold atom bosonic Mott insulator leads to a novel polaron that exhibits correlated motion with an effective mass and a linear size that nearly diverge at critical value of the on-site impurity-boson interaction strength. Cold atom technology can tune the polaron's properties and break up the composite particle into a deconfined impurity-hole and boson particle state at finite, controllable polaron momentum.
While quantum fluctuations in binary mixtures of bosonic atoms with short-range interactions can lead to the formation of a self-bound droplet, for equal intra-component interactions but an unequal number of atoms in the two components, there is an excess part that cannot bind to the droplet. Imposing confinement, as here through periodic boundary conditions in a one-dimensional setting, the droplet becomes amalgamated with a residual condensate. The rotational properties of this compound system reveal simultaneous rigid-body and superfluid behavior in the ground state and uncover that the res…
Ultradilute quantum droplets are intriguing new state of matter, in which the attractive mean-field force can be balanced by the repulsive force from quantum fluctuations to avoid collapse. Here, we present a microscopic theory of ultradilute quantum droplets in three-, one- and two-dimensional two-component Bose-Bose mixtures, by generalizing the conventional Bogoliubov theory to include the bosonic pairing arising from the interspecies attraction. Our pairing theory is fully equivalent to a variational approach and hence gives an upper bound for the energy of quantum droplets. In three dimen…

We show how exact diagonalization of small clusters can be used as a fast and reliable impurity solver by determining the phase diagram and physical properties of the bosonic single-impurity Anderson model. This is specially important for applications which require the solution of a large number of different single-impurity problems, such as the bosonic dynamical mean field theory of disordered systems. In particular, we investigate the connection between spontaneous global gauge symmetry breaking and the occurrence of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). We show how BEC is accurately signaled by…
We study a model describing $N$ identical bosonic atoms trapped in a double-well potential together with a single impurity atom, comparing and contrasting it throughout with the Dicke model. As the boson-impurity coupling strength is varied, there is a symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcation which is analogous to the quantum phase transition occurring in the Dicke model. Through stability analysis around the bifurcation point, we show that the critical value of the coupling strength has the same dependence on the parameters as the critical coupling value in the Dicke model. We also show that, …
We revisit the Bogoliubov theory of quantum droplets proposed by Petrov {[}Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{115}, 155302 (2015){]} for an ultracold Bose-Bose mixture, where the mean-field collapse is stabilized by the Lee-Huang-Yang quantum fluctuations. We show that a loophole in Petrov's theory, i.e., the ignorance of the softening complex Bogoliubov spectrum, can be naturally removed by the introduction of bosonic pairing. The pairing leads to weaker mean-field attractions, and also stronger Lee-Huang-Yang term in the case of unequal intraspecies interactions. As a result, the equilibrium density f…
Breakdown of the single-mode description of ultradilute quantum droplets in binary Bose mixtures: A perspective from a microscopic bosonic pairing theory
Recently achieved two-component dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates open exciting possibilities for the study of mixtures of ultra-dilute quantum liquids. While non-dipolar self-bound mixtures are necessarily miscible with an approximately fixed ratio between the two densities, the density ratio for the dipolar case is free. As a result, self-bound dipolar mixtures present qualitatively novel and much richer physics, characterized by three possible ground-state phases: miscible, symmetric immiscible and asymmetric immiscible, which may in principle occur at any population imbalance. Self-bound i…
We unravel the many-body dynamics of a harmonically trapped impurity colliding with a bosonic medium confined in a double-well upon quenching the initially displaced harmonic trap to the center of the double-well. We reveal that the emerging correlation dynamics crucially depends on the impurity-medium interaction strength allowing for a classification into different dynamical response regimes. For strong attractive impurity-medium couplings the impurity is bound to the bosonic bath, while for intermediate attractions it undergoes an effective tunneling. In the case of weak attractive or repul…
We study measurable quantities of bosonic and fermionic mixtures on a one-dimensional ring. These few-body ensembles consist of majority atoms obeying certain statistics (Fermi or Bose) and an impurity atom in a different hyperfine state. The repulsive interactions between majority-impurity and majority-majority are varied from weak to strong. We show that the majority-impurity repulsion is mainly responsible for the loss of coherence in the strongly interacting regime. The momentum distribution follows the $\mathcal{C}/p^4$ universal behaviour for the high momentum tail, but the contact $\mat…
Using near-exact numerical simulations we study the propagation of an impurity through a one-dimensional Bose lattice gas for varying bosonic interaction strengths and filling factors at zero temperature. The impurity is coupled to the Bose gas and confined to a separate tilted lattice. The precise nature of the transport of the impurity is specific to the excitation spectrum of the Bose gas which allows one to measure properties of the Bose gas non-destructively, in principle, by observing the impurity; here we focus on the spatial and momentum distributions of the impurity as well as its red…
We study the fate of an impurity in an ultracold heteronuclear Bose mixture, focusing on the experimentally relevant case of a $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb mixture, with the impurity in a $^{41}$K hyperfine state. Our work provides a comprehensive description of an impurity in a BEC mixture with contact interactions across its phase diagram. We present results for the miscible and immiscible regimes, as well as for the impurity in a self-bound quantum droplet. Here, varying the interactions, we find novel, exotic states where the impurity localizes either at the center or at the surface of the droplet.
We have analyzed the behavior of a mobile quantum impurity in a bath formed by a two-leg bosonic ladder by a combination of field theory (Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid) and numerical (Density Matrix Renormalization Group) techniques. Computing the Green's function of the impurity as a function of time at different momenta, we find a power law decay at zero momentum, which signals the breakdown of any quasi-particle description of the impurity motion. We compute the exponent both for the limits of weak and strong impurity-bath interactions. At small impurity-bath interaction, we find that the impur…
The detailed study of the low-energy spectrum for a mobile impurity in the one-dimensional bosonic enviroment is performed. Particularly we have considered only two analytically accessible limits, namely, the case of an impurity immersed in a dilute Bose gas, where one can use many-body perturbation techniques for low-dimensional bosonic systemsm and the case of the Tonks-Girardeau gas, for which the usual fermionic diagrammatic expansion up to the second order is applied.
We investigate the ground-state energy of a one-dimensional Fermi gas with two bosonic impurities. We consider spinless fermions with no fermion-fermion interactions. The fermion-impurity and impurity-impurity interactions are modelled with Dirac delta functions. First, we study the case where impurity and fermions have equal masses, and the impurity-impurity two-body interaction is identical to the fermion-impurity interaction, such that the system is solvable with the Bethe ansatz. For attractive interactions, we find that the energy of the impurity-impurity subsystem is below the energy of …
We demonstrate that an ultracold many-body bosonic ensemble confined in a one-dimensional (1D) double-well (DW) potential can exhibit chaotic dynamics due to the presence of a single impurity. The non-equilibrium dynamics is triggered by a quench of the impurity-Bose interaction and is illustrated via the evolution of the population imbalance for the bosons between the two wells. While the increase of the post-quench interaction strength always facilitates the irregular motion for the bosonic population imbalance, it becomes regular again when the impurity is initially populated in the highly …
The counterflow dynamics of two correlated impurities in a double-well coupled to an one-dimensional bosonic medium is explored. We determine the ground state phase diagram of the system according to the impurity-medium entanglement and the impurities two-body correlations. Specifically, bound impurity structures reminiscent of bipolarons for strong attractive couplings as well as configurations with two clustered or separated impurities in the repulsive case are identified. The interval of existence of these phases depends strongly on the impurity-impurity interactions and external confinemen…
We unravel the nonequilibrium correlated quantum quench dynamics of an impurity traveling through a harmonically confined Bose-Einstein condensate in one-dimension. For weak repulsive interspecies interactions the impurity oscillates within the bosonic gas. At strong repulsions and depending on its prequench position the impurity moves towards an edge of the bosonic medium and subsequently equilibrates. This equilibration being present independently of the initial velocity, the position and the mass of the impurity is inherently related to the generation of entanglement in the many-body system…

Quantum droplets can emerge in bosonic binary magnetic gases (BMGs) from the interplay of short- and long-ranged interactions, and quantum fluctuations. We develop an extended meanfield theory for this system and use it to predict equilibrium and dynamical properties of BMG droplets. We present a phase diagram and characterize miscible and immiscible droplet states. We also show that a single component self-bound droplet can be used to bind another magnetic component which is not in the droplet regime. Our results should be realizable in experiments with mixtures of highly-magnetic lanthanide …
We investigate the ground state properties and the nonequilibrium dynamics of a lattice trapped bosonic mixture consisting of an impurity species and a finite-sized medium. For the case of one as well as two impurities we observe that, depending on the lattice depth and the interspecies interaction strength, a transition from a strongly delocalized to a localized impurity distribution occurs. In the latter regime the two species phase separate, thereby forming a particle-hole pair. For two impurities we find that below a critical lattice depth they are delocalized among two neighboring outer l…
In this article, we illustrate the scaling properties of a family of solutions for N attractive bosonic atoms in the limit of large $N$. These solutions represent the quantized dynamics of solitonic degrees of freedom in atomic droplets. In dimensions lower than two, or $d=2-ε$, we demonstrate that the number of isotropic droplet states scales as $N^{3/2}/ε^{1/2}$, and for $ε=0$, or $d=2$, scales as ${N^2}$. The ground state energies scale as $N^{2 / ε+ 1}$ in $d=2-ε$, and when $d=2$, scale as an exponential function of N. We obtain the universal energy spectra and the generalized Tjon relatio…
We use exact Quantum Monte Carlo techniques to study the properties of quantum droplets in two-component bosonic mixtures with contact interactions in one spatial dimension. We systematically study the surface tension, the density profile and the breathing mode as a function of the number of particles in the droplet and of the ratio of coupling strengths between intra-species repulsion and inter-species attraction. We find that deviations from the predictions of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation are small in most cases of interest.
We describe the ground state of a large, dilute, neutral atom Bose- Einstein condensate (BEC) doped with N strongly coupled mutually indistinguishable, bosonic neutral atoms (referred to as "impurity") in the polaron regime where the BEC density response to the impurity atoms remains significantly smaller than the average density of the surrounding BEC. We find that N impurity atoms (N is not one) can self-localize at a lower value of the impurity-boson interaction strength than a single impurity atom. When the 'bare' short-range impurity-impurity repulsion does not play a significant role, th…
We consider a single impurity atom confined to an optical lattice and immersed in a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Interaction of the impurity with the phonon modes of the BEC leads to the formation of a stable quasiparticle, the polaron. We use a variational mean-field approach to study dispersion renormalization and derive equations describing non-equilibrium dynamics of polarons by projecting equations of motion into mean-field (MF) type wavefunctions. As a concrete example, we apply our method to study dynamics of impurity atoms in response to a suddenly applied force and expl…
We report on the experimental doping of a $^{87}$Rubidium (Rb) Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with individual neutral $^{133}$Cesium (Cs) atoms. We discuss the experimental tools and procedures to facilitate Cs-Rb interaction. First, we use degenerate Raman side-band cooling of the impurities to enhance the immersion efficiency for the impurity in the quantum gas. We identify the immersed fraction of Cs impurities from the thermalization of Cs atoms upon impinging on a BEC, where elastic collisions lead to a localization of Cs atoms in the Rb cloud. Second, further enhancement of the immersion…
The problem of an impurity particle moving through a bosonic medium plays a fundamental role in physics. However, the canonical scenario of a mobile impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) has not yet been realized. Here, we use radio frequency spectroscopy of ultracold bosonic $^{39}$K atoms to experimentally demonstrate the existence of a well-defined quasiparticle state of an impurity interacting with a BEC. We measure the energy of the impurity both for attractive and repulsive interactions, and find excellent agreement with theories that incorporate three-body correlations, …
We develop two approximate theories to describe the miscible and immiscible droplets that can occur in a binary mixture of highly magnetic bosonic atoms. In addition to allowing simpler calculations, the approximate theories provide insight into the role of quantum fluctuations in the two regimes. Results are validated by comparison to those from the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation. As an application we solve for the ground state droplets crossing the miscible-immiscible transition as function of the short-ranged interspecies interaction parameter. We consider regimes where the transition o…
We study the correlation between an impurity and a small ensemble of bosonic particles in one dimension. Our study analyzes the one-body density matrix and calculates the corresponding von Neumann entanglement entropy as a function of the interaction strength between the impurity and the bosons when all particles have the same mass. We show that the entropy grows very fast for small and moderate interaction strength and then increases slowly toward the strongly interacting regime. Then we study the effect over the quantum correlations of a mass imbalance between the impurity and the bosons. In…
We study the correlated dynamics of few interacting bosonic impurities immersed in a one-dimensional harmonically trapped bosonic environment. The mixture is exposed to a time-dependent impurity-medium interaction pulse moving it across the relevant phase separation boundary. For modulation frequencies smaller than the trapping one, the system successively transits through the miscible/immiscible phases according to the driving of the impurity-medium interactions. For strong modulations, and driving from the miscible to the immiscible regime, a significant fraction of the impurities is expelle…
We investigate cold bosonic impurity atoms trapped in a vortex lattice formed by condensed bosons of another species. We describe the dynamics of the impurities by a bosonic Hubbard model containing occupation-dependent parameters to capture the effects of strong impurity-impurity interactions. These include both a repulsive direct interaction and an attractive effective interaction mediated by the BEC. The occupation dependence of these two competing interactions drastically affects the Hubbard model phase diagram, including causing the disappearance of some Mott lobes
We unravel the ground state properties and the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of two bosonic impurities immersed in an one-dimensional fermionic environment by applying a quench of the impurity-medium interaction strength. In the ground state, the impurities and the Fermi sea are phase-separated for strong impurity-medium repulsions while they experience a localization tendency around the trap center for large attractions. We demonstrate the presence of attractive induced interactions mediated by the host for impurity-medium couplings of either sign and analyze the competition between induce…
We consider bosonic atoms in an optical lattice at integer filling, tuned to the superfluid-Mott insulator critical point, and coupled to a single, mobile impurity atom of a different species. This setup is inspired by current experiments with quantum gas microscopes, which enable tracking of the impurity motion. We describe the evolution of the impurity motion from quantum wave packet spread at short times, to Brownian diffusion at long times. This dynamics is controlled by the interplay between dangerously irrelevant perturbations at the strongly-interacting field theory describing the super…
We theoretically investigate the droplets formation in a tightly trapped one-dimensional dipolar gas of bosonic atoms. When the strength of the dipolar interaction becomes sufficiently attractive compared to the contact one, we show how a solitonic-like density profile evolves into a liquid-like droplet on increasing the number of particles in the trap. The incipient gas-liquid transition is also signalled by a steep increase of the breathing mode and a change in sign of the chemical potential. Upon a sudden release of the trap, varying the number of trapped atoms and the scattering length, th…
We analyze the properties of an impurity in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). First the quasiparticle residue of a static impurity in an ideal BEC is shown to vanish with increasing particle number as a stretched exponential, leading to a bosonic orthogonality catastrophe. Then we introduce a variational ansatz, which recovers this exact result and describes the macroscopic dressing of the impurity including its back-action onto the BEC as well as boson-boson repulsion beyond the Bogoliubov approximation. This ansatz predicts that the orthogonality catastrophe also occurs for mobile imp…
