We propose a scheme to control quantum coherence of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by a single impurity atom immersed in the BEC. We show that the single impurity atom can act as a single atom valve (SAV) to control quantum coherence of the two-component BEC. It is demonstrated that the SAV can realize the on-demand control over quantum coherence at an arbitrary time. Specially, it is found that the SAV can also control higher-order quantum coherence of two-component BEC. We investigate the long-time evolution of quantum coherence of the two-component BEC. It is indicated that the single impurity atom can induce collapse and revival phenomenon of quantum coherence of the two-component BEC. Collapse-revival configurations of quantum coherence can be manipulated by the initial-state parameters of the impurity atom and the impurity-BEC interaction strengths.
We present a new generalized Dicke model, an impurity-doped Dicke model (IDDM), by the use of an impurity-doped cavity-Bose-Einstein condensate. It is shown that the impurity atom can induce Dicke quantum phase transition (QPT) from the normal phase to superradiant phase at a critic value of the impurity population. It is found that the IDDM exhibits continuous Dicke QPT with an infinite number of critical points, which is significantly different from that observed in the standard Dicke model with only one critical point. It is revealed that the impurity-induced Dicke QPT can happen in an arbi…
Using near-exact numerical simulations we study the propagation of an impurity through a one-dimensional Bose lattice gas for varying bosonic interaction strengths and filling factors at zero temperature. The impurity is coupled to the Bose gas and confined to a separate tilted lattice. The precise nature of the transport of the impurity is specific to the excitation spectrum of the Bose gas which allows one to measure properties of the Bose gas non-destructively, in principle, by observing the impurity; here we focus on the spatial and momentum distributions of the impurity as well as its red…
We investigate a temporal evolution of an impurity atom in a one-dimensional trapped Bose gas following a sudden change of the boson-impurity interaction strength. Our focus is on the effects of inhomogeneity due to the harmonic confinement. These effects can be described by an effective one-body model where both the mass and the spring constant are renormalized. This is in contrast to the classic renormalization, which addresses only the mass. We propose an effective single-particle Hamiltonian and apply the multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method for bosons to explore its…
We study the quantum dynamics of the two impurities in a trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We explore the effect of impurity-BEC and impurity-impurity interaction strengths on the dynamics of impurities inside the Bose-Einstein condensate. By studying the auto-correlation function of impurities and the BEC, we analyze and quantify the trapping of impurities inside the BEC. We find out that for the small value of inter-species coupling strength the BEC starts to oscillate inside the trap. For mild coupling strengths, attractive and repulsive impurities are captured a…
Using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (TDMRG) we theoretically study the collision of a one-dimensional gas of interacting bosons with an impurity trapped in a shallow box potential. We study the dynamic response of both the impurity and the bosonic gas and find an approximate independence of the sign of the interaction (attractive or repulsive) between the impurity and the bosons. This sign-independence breaks down when the interaction energy is of the same order as the box potential depth, leading to resonant pair tunneling. Our predictions can be tested using contemp…
We study the properties of an impurity immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas, i.e., of a Bose polaron. In the perturbatively-tractable of limit weak impurity-boson interactions many of its properties are known to depend only on the scattering length. Here we demonstrate that for strong (unitary) impurity-boson interactions all static quasiproperties of a Bose polaron in a dilute Bose gas, such as its energy, its residue, its Tan's contact and the number of bosons trapped nearby the impurity, depend on the impurity-boson potential via a single parameter.
The mobile impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is a paradigmatic many-body problem. For weak interaction between the impurity and the BEC, the impurity deforms the BEC only slightly and it is well described within the Fröhlich model and the Bogoliubov approximation. For strong local attraction this standard approach, however, fails to balance the local attraction with the weak repulsion between the BEC particles and predicts an instability where an infinite number of bosons is attracted toward the impurity. Here we present a solution of the Bose polaron problem beyond the Bogoliubov a…
By using simple and efficient method we discuss properties of a single impurity immersed in three-dimensional Bose gas with the interaction between particles tuned to unitary limit. Particularly, adopting the mean-field-like approximation we present the first estimations for the low-momentum parameters of the impurity spectrum, namely, the binding energy, the effective mass and the quasiparticle residue both for repulsive and attractive Bose polarons in the unitary gas.
A weakly interacting Bose gas with a single static impurity is studied in one dimension. The local spectral density is evaluated and an analytic expression valid for positive strengths of the impurity coupling to the bosons, at all distances and at all frequencies is obtained using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approximation.
We employ the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to study acoustic emission generated in a uniform Bose gas by a static impurity. The impurity excites a sound-wave packet, which propagates through the gas. We calculate the shape of this wave packet in the limit of long wave lengths, and argue that it is possible to extract properties of the impurity by observing this shape. We illustrate here this possibility for a Bose gas with a trapped impurity atom -- an example of a relevant experimental setup. Presented results are general for all one-dimensional systems described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equ…
We study an impurity immersed in the mixture of Bose ultracold gases in the regime where a quantum droplet exists. The quasi-one-dimensional geometry is considered. We find an effective attractive potential that acts by the quantum droplet onto the impurity. The bound states of the impurity in this potential are investigated. These impurity bound states can provide potential probes for the presence of quantum fluctuations effects on the droplet properties. In the case of strong impurity-BEC coupling, we study the properties of the nonlinear local modes on the impurity induced by the quantum fl…
We study the correlation between an impurity and a small ensemble of bosonic particles in one dimension. Our study analyzes the one-body density matrix and calculates the corresponding von Neumann entanglement entropy as a function of the interaction strength between the impurity and the bosons when all particles have the same mass. We show that the entropy grows very fast for small and moderate interaction strength and then increases slowly toward the strongly interacting regime. Then we study the effect over the quantum correlations of a mass imbalance between the impurity and the bosons. In…
We present a new theoretical framework for describing an impurity in a trapped Bose system in one spatial dimension. The theory handles any external confinement, arbitrary mass ratios, and a weak interaction may be included between the Bose particles. To demonstrate our technique, we calculate the ground state energy and properties of a sample system with eight bosons and find an excellent agreement with numerically exact results. Our theory can thus provide definite predictions for experiments in cold atomic gases.
We investigate the behavior of a harmonically trapped system consisting of an impurity in a dilute ideal Bose gas after the boson-impurity interaction is suddenly switched on. As theoretical framework, we use a field theory approach in the space-time domain within the T-matrix approximation. We establish the form of the corresponding T-matrix and address the dynamical properties of the system. As a numerical application, we consider a simple system of a weakly interacting impurity in one dimension where the interaction leads to oscillations of the impurity density. Moreover, we show that the a…
We proposed the non-perturbative scheme for calculation of the impurity spectrum in the Bose system at zero temperature. The method is based on the path-integral formulation and describes an impurity as a zero-density ideal Fermi gas interacting with Bose system for which the action is written in terms of density fluctuations. On the example of the $^3$He atom immersed in the liquid helium-4 a good consistency with experimental data and results of Monte Carlo simulations is shown.
We consider the effects of finite temperature on the scattering of impurity atoms in a BoseEinstein condensate, showing that the scattering rate is enhanced by the thermal atoms. Collisions can increase or decrease the impurity energy. Below the Landau velocity only the first process occurs, i.e., the collisions cool the condensate. Above the critical velocity the dissipative collisions prevail over the cooling ones for sufficiently low temperatures. These considerations are applied to a recent experiment.
We exactly analyze, on the mean-field level, the low-momentum properties of a single impurity atom loaded in the dilute one-dimensional Bose gas with two- and three-body short-range interactions. Particularly the Bose polaron binding energy and the quasiparticle residue are calculated for the considered system in the broad region of parameters change. We also explore the generic mean-field formula for the polaron effective mass which was shown to depend on the density profile of bath particles with a motionless impurity immersed.
We study the fate of an impurity in an ultracold heteronuclear Bose mixture, focusing on the experimentally relevant case of a $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb mixture, with the impurity in a $^{41}$K hyperfine state. Our work provides a comprehensive description of an impurity in a BEC mixture with contact interactions across its phase diagram. We present results for the miscible and immiscible regimes, as well as for the impurity in a self-bound quantum droplet. Here, varying the interactions, we find novel, exotic states where the impurity localizes either at the center or at the surface of the droplet.
The detailed study of the low-energy spectrum for a mobile impurity in the one-dimensional bosonic enviroment is performed. Particularly we have considered only two analytically accessible limits, namely, the case of an impurity immersed in a dilute Bose gas, where one can use many-body perturbation techniques for low-dimensional bosonic systemsm and the case of the Tonks-Girardeau gas, for which the usual fermionic diagrammatic expansion up to the second order is applied.
When an impurity is immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate, impurity-boson interactions are expected to dress the impurity into a quasiparticle, the Bose polaron. We superimpose an ultracold atomic gas of $^{87}$Rb with a much lower density gas of fermionic $^{40}$K impurities. Through the use of a Feshbach resonance and RF spectroscopy, we characterize the energy, spectral width and lifetime of the resultant polaron on both the attractive and the repulsive branches in the strongly interacting regime. The width of the polaron in the attractive branch is narrow compared to its binding energy, e…
We investigate the open dynamics of an atomic impurity embedded in a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard lattice. We derive the reduced evolution equation for the impurity and show that the Bose-Hubbard lattice behaves as a tunable engineered environment allowing to simulate both Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics in a controlled and experimentally realisable way. We demonstrate that the presence or absence of memory effects is a signature of the nature of the excitations induced by the impurity, being delocalized or localized in the two limiting cases of superfluid and Mott insulator, respectively…
We develop a systematic perturbation theory for the quasiparticle properties of a single impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Analytical results are derived for the impurity energy, the effective mass, and residue to third order in the impurity-boson scattering length. The energy is shown to depend logarithmically on the scattering length to third order, whereas the residue and effective mass are given by analytical power series. When the boson-boson scattering length equals the boson-impurity scattering length, the energy has the same structure as that of a weakly interacting Bose…
We explore the time evolution of two impurities in a trapped one-dimensional Bose gas that follows a change of the boson-impurity interaction. We study the induced impurity-impurity interactions and their effect on the quench dynamics. In particular, we report on the size of the impurity cloud, the impurity-impurity entanglement, and the impurity-impurity correlation function. The presented numerical simulations are based upon the variational multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method for bosons. To analyze and quantify induced impurity-impurity correlations, we employ an effe…
We study the thermalization dynamics of an impurity cloud inside a Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperature, introducing a suitable Boltzmann equation. Some values of the temperature and of the initial impurity energy are considered. We find that, below the Landau critical velocity, the macroscopic population of the initial impurity state reduces its depletion rate. For sufficiently high velocities the opposite effect occurs. For appropriate parameters the collisions cool the condensate. The maximum cooling per impurity atom is obtained with multiple collisions.
We investigate the properties of an impurity immersed in a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature using quantum Monte-Carlo methods. The interactions between bosons are modeled by a hard sphere potential with scattering length $a$, whereas the interactions between the impurity and the bosons are modeled by a short-range, square-well potential where both the sign and the strength of the scattering length $b$ can be varied by adjusting the well depth. We characterize the attractive and the repulsive polaron branch by calculating the binding energy and the effective mass of the impurity. Furthermore…
We study the dynamics of a quantum impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate as an open quantum system in the framework of the quantum Brownian motion model. We derive a generalized Langevin equation for the position of the impurity. The Langevin equation is an integrodifferential equation that contains a memory kernel and is driven by a colored noise. These result from considering the environment as given by the degrees of freedom of the quantum gas, and thus depend on its parameters, e.g. interaction strength between the bosons, temperature, etc. We study the role of the memory on the …
Polarons, self-localized composite objects formed by the interaction of a single impurity particle with a host medium, are a paradigm of strong interaction many-body physics. We show that dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC's) are the first medium known to self-localize the same impurity particles both in a Landau-Pekar polaron state akin to that of self-localized electrons in a dielectric lattice, and in a bubble state akin to that of electron bubbles in helium. We also show that the BEC-impurity system is fully characterized by just two dimensionless coupling constants, and that it can…
We study a single impurity driven by a constant force through a 1D Bose gas using a Lieb-Liniger based approach. Our calculaton is exact in the interaction amongst the particles in the Bose gas, and is perturbative in the interaction between the gas and the impurity. In contrast to previous studies of this problem, we are able to handle arbitrary interaction strength for the Bose gas. We find very good agreement with recent experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 150601 (2009)].
We analyze the properties of an impurity in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). First the quasiparticle residue of a static impurity in an ideal BEC is shown to vanish with increasing particle number as a stretched exponential, leading to a bosonic orthogonality catastrophe. Then we introduce a variational ansatz, which recovers this exact result and describes the macroscopic dressing of the impurity including its back-action onto the BEC as well as boson-boson repulsion beyond the Bogoliubov approximation. This ansatz predicts that the orthogonality catastrophe also occurs for mobile imp…
We unravel the nonequilibrium correlated quantum quench dynamics of an impurity traveling through a harmonically confined Bose-Einstein condensate in one-dimension. For weak repulsive interspecies interactions the impurity oscillates within the bosonic gas. At strong repulsions and depending on its prequench position the impurity moves towards an edge of the bosonic medium and subsequently equilibrates. This equilibration being present independently of the initial velocity, the position and the mass of the impurity is inherently related to the generation of entanglement in the many-body system…
We investigate the crossover of the impurity-induced dynamics, in trapped one-dimensional Bose polarons subject to radio frequency (rf) pulses of varying intensity, from an adiabatic to a diabatic regime. Utilizing adiabatic pulses for either weak repulsive or attractive impurity-medium interactions, a multitude of polaronic excitations or mode-couplings of the impurity-bath interaction with the collective breathing motion of the bosonic medium are spectrally resolved. We find that for strongly repulsive impurity-bath interactions, a temporal orthogonality catastrophe manifests in resonances i…
Motivated by a recent experiment [J. Catani et al., arXiv:1106.0828v1 preprint, 2011], we study breathing oscillations in the width of a harmonically trapped impurity interacting with a separately trapped Bose gas. We provide an intuitive physical picture of such dynamics at zero temperature, using a time-dependent variational approach. In the Gross-Pitaevskii regime we obtain breathing oscillations whose amplitudes are suppressed by self trapping, due to interactions with the Bose gas. Introducing phonons in the Bose gas leads to the damping of breathing oscillations and non-Markovian dynamic…
In this paper we consider the effect of self-localization of a quantum impurity in Bose-Einstein condensate. Space correlation function of the impurity is evaluated with the help of the imaginary-time path integral approach. Employing the Feynman's variational method we calculate the impurity correlation function as well as the energy of the system associated with the impurity. The effect of self-localization predicted before within Gross-Pitaevskii approach is recovered by our treatment. The strong coupling regime with negative ground state energy is reached by variational method, and corresp…
We study the properties of Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC)-impurity mixtures at finite temperature employing the Balian-Vénéroni (BV) variational principle. The method leads to a set of coupled nonlinear equations of motion for the condensate and its normal and anomalous fluctuations on the one hand, and for the impurity on the other. We show that the obtained equations satisfy the energy and number conserving laws. Useful analytic expressions for the chemical potential and the radius of both condensate and anomalous components are derived in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi (TF) approximation…
We investigate the formation of magnetic Bose polaron, an impurity atom dressed by spin-wave excitations, in a one-dimensional spinor Bose gas. In terms of an effective potential model the impurity is strongly confined by the host excitations which can even overcome the impurity-medium repulsion leading to a self-localized quasi-particle state. The phase diagram of the attractive and self-bound repulsive magnetic polaron, repulsive non-magnetic (Fr{\" o}hlich-type) polaron and impurity-medium phase-separation regimes is explored with respect to the Rabi-coupling between the spin components, sp…
Experiments have demonstrated that atoms excited to specific Rydberg states within Bose-Einstein condensates cause significant excitation of phonons. If the Rydberg atom is brought into an electronic superposition state, this coupling to phonons leads to decoherence. We provide the theoretical basis for the treatment of the latter. To this end, we evaluate Rydberg-phonon coupling coefficients using a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. From these coefficients, we calculate bath correlation functions, spectral densities and re-organisation energies. All these quantify the influe…
We study the properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC)-impurity mixture at finite temperature employing the time dependent Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov (TDHFB) theory which is a set of coupled nonlinear equations of motion for the condensate and its normal and anomalous fluctuations on the one hand, and for impurity on the other. The numerical solutions of these equations in the static quasi-1D regime show that the thermal cloud and the anomalous density are deformed as happens to the condensate and the impurity becomes less localized at nonzero temperatures. Effects of the BEC fluctuations on…
By means of linear stability analysis (LSA) and direct numerical simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii(GP)equations, we address the impurity induced modulational instability (MI) and the associated nonlinear dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We explore the dual role played by the impurities within the BECs -- the instigation of MI and the dissipation of the initially generated solitary waves. Because of the impurities, the repulsive BECs are even modulationally unstable and this tendency towards MI increases with increasing impurity fraction and superfluid-impurity coupling s…
We investigate radiation spectra arising from accelerated point-like impurities in the homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate. A general formula for the radiation spectrum is obtained in the integral form as a function of given impurity trajectory. The Planckian spectrum is obtained for a special accelerated motion, which is shown to be unphysical. Non-Planckian spectrum is found in the case of a uniformly accelerated impurity. We compare our result with similar settings as discussed in other quantum many-body systems.
We investigate a Bose-Einstein condensate in strong interaction with a single impurity particle. While this situation has received considerable interest in recent years, the regime of strong coupling remained inaccessible to most approaches due to an instability in Bogoliubov theory arising near the resonance. We present a nonlocal extension of Gross-Pitaevskii theory that is free of such divergences and does not require the use of the Born approximation in any of the interaction potentials. We find a new dynamical transition regime between attractive and repulsive polarons, where an interacti…
We consider the real time dynamics of an initially localized distinguishable impurity injected into the ground state of the Lieb-Liniger model. Focusing on the case where integrability is preserved, we numerically compute the time evolution of the impurity density operator in regimes far from analytically tractable limits. We find that the injected impurity undergoes a stuttering motion as it moves and expands. For an initially stationary impurity, the interaction-driven formation of a quasibound state with a hole in the background gas leads to arrested expansion -- a period of quasistationary…
We investigate the problem of an infinitely heavy impurity interacting with a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature. When the impurity-boson interactions are short ranged, we show that boson-boson interactions induce a quantum blockade effect, where a single boson can effectively block or screen the impurity potential. Since this behavior depends on the quantum granular nature of the Bose gas, it cannot be captured within a standard classical-field description. Using a combination of exact quantum Monte Carlo methods and a truncated basis approach, we show how the quantum correlations between bo…
We study the quantum motion of an impurity atom immersed in a Bose Einstein condensate in arbitrary dimension. The Bogoliubov excitations of the Bose Einstein condensate act as a bosonic bath for the impurity. We present a detailed derivation of the $d$-dimensional Langevin equations that describe the quantum dynamics of the system, and of the associated generalized tensor that describes the spectral density in the full generality. When the impurity is not trapped, we calculate the mean square displacement, showing that the motion is super diffusive. We obtain also explicit expressions for the…
We investigate the drag force on a moving impurity in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate. We prove rigorously that the superfluid critical velocity is zero when the impurity moves in all but one directions, in contrast to the case of liquid helium and superconductor where it is finite in all directions. We also find that when the impurity moves in all directions except two special ones, the drag force has nonzero transverse component at small velocity. When the velocity becomes large and the states of the upper band are also excited, the transverse force becomes very small due to op…
We consider the motion of a point-like impurity through a three-dimensional two-component Bose-Einstein condensate subject to Weyl spin-orbit coupling. Using linear-response theory, we calculate the drag force felt by the impurity and the associated anisotropic critical velocity from the spectrum of elementary excitations. The drag force is shown to be generally not collinear with the velocity of the impurity. This unusual behavior is a consequence of condensation into a finite-momentum state due to the spin-orbit coupling.
In this paper a Gaussian impurity moving through an equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate at T = 0 is studied. The problem can be described by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is solved perturbatively. The analysis is done for systems of 2 and 3 spatial dimensions and generalises the work by [G.E. Astrakharchik and L.P. Pitaevskii, Phys. Rev. A 70, 013608 (2004)]. The Bogoliubov equation solutions for the condensate perturbed by a finite impurity are calculated in the co-moving frame, which are formally equivalent up to a dimension dependent form factor for general dimensions. From those solu…
We unravel the many-body dynamics of a harmonically trapped impurity colliding with a bosonic medium confined in a double-well upon quenching the initially displaced harmonic trap to the center of the double-well. We reveal that the emerging correlation dynamics crucially depends on the impurity-medium interaction strength allowing for a classification into different dynamical response regimes. For strong attractive impurity-medium couplings the impurity is bound to the bosonic bath, while for intermediate attractions it undergoes an effective tunneling. In the case of weak attractive or repul…
In ultracold atomic gases, a unique interplay arises between phenomena known from condensed matter physics, few-body physics and chemistry. Similar to an electron in a solid, an impurity in an ultracold gas can get dressed by excitations from the medium, forming a quasiparticle called the polaron. We study how dressing of an impurity leads to a modification of its chemical reactivity. Using a Gaussian state variational method in the frame of the impurity, we demonstrate that three-body correlations lead to an instability of the polaron. This instability is connected to an Efimov resonance, but…
We compare and contrast the mean-field and many-body properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double well potential with a single impurity atom. The mean-field solutions display a rich structure of bifurcations as parameters such as the boson-impurity interaction strength and the tilt between the two wells are varied. In particular, we study a pitchfork bifurcation in the lowest mean-field stationary solution which occurs when the boson-impurity interaction exceeds a critical magnitude. This bifurcation, which is present for both repulsive and attractive boson-impurity interaction…
We describe the ground state of a large, dilute, neutral atom Bose- Einstein condensate (BEC) doped with N strongly coupled mutually indistinguishable, bosonic neutral atoms (referred to as "impurity") in the polaron regime where the BEC density response to the impurity atoms remains significantly smaller than the average density of the surrounding BEC. We find that N impurity atoms (N is not one) can self-localize at a lower value of the impurity-boson interaction strength than a single impurity atom. When the 'bare' short-range impurity-impurity repulsion does not play a significant role, th…
We study how macroscopic superpositions of coherent states produced by the nondissipative dynamics of binary mixtures of ultracold atoms are affected by atom losses. We identify different decoherence scenarios for symmetric or asymmetric loss rates and interaction energies in the two modes. In the symmetric case the quantum coherence in the superposition is lost after a single loss event. By tuning appropriately the energies we show that the superposition can be protected, leading to quantum correlations useful for atom interferometry even after many loss events.
