We employ the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to study acoustic emission generated in a uniform Bose gas by a static impurity. The impurity excites a sound-wave packet, which propagates through the gas. We calculate the shape of this wave packet in the limit of long wave lengths, and argue that it is possible to extract properties of the impurity by observing this shape. We illustrate here this possibility for a Bose gas with a trapped impurity atom -- an example of a relevant experimental setup. Presented results are general for all one-dimensional systems described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and can also be used in nonatomic systems, e.g., to analyze light propagation in nonlinear optical media. Finally, we calculate the shape of the sound-wave packet for a three-dimensional Bose gas assuming a spherically symmetric perturbation.
We study the propagation of the two sound modes in two-dimensional Bose gases across the Berezinksii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition using classical-field dynamics, which is motivated by recent measurements of Christodoulou et al. Nature 594, 191 (2021). Based on the dynamic structure factor, we identify the two sound modes as the Bogoliubov (B) and the non-Bogoliubov (NB) sound mode below the transition, and as the diffusive and the normal sound mode above the transition. The NB sound mode velocity is higher than the B sound mode velocity, which we refer to as the weak-coupling regime of…
We present an alternative method for determining the sound velocity in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, based on thermodynamic global variables. The total number of trapped atoms was as a function of temperature carefully studied across the phase transition, at constant volume. It allowed us to evaluate the sound velocity resulting in consistent values from the quantum to classical regime, in good agreement with previous results found in literature. We also provide some insight about the dominant sound mode (thermal or superfluid) across a wide temperature range.
We propose a generalization of the Feynman path integral using squeezed coherent states. We apply this approach to the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates, which gives an effective low energy description that contains both a coherent field and a squeezing field. We derive the classical trajectory of this action, which constitutes a generalization of the Gross Pitaevskii equation, at linear order. We derive the low energy excitations, which provides a description of second sound in weakly interacting condensates as a squeezing oscillation of the order parameter. This interpretation is also su…
Motivated by recent experiments in Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 145301 (2018), we study sound propagation in a two-dimensional (2D) Bose gas across the superfluid-thermal transition using classical field dynamics. Below the transition temperature we find a Bogoliubov and a non-Bogoliubov mode, above it we find the normal sound mode and the diffusive mode, as we determine from the dynamical structure factor. Our simulations of the experimental procedure agree with the measured velocities, and show that below the transition temperature the measurements detect the Bogoliubov mode. Above the transition, …
A Bose gas trapped in a one-dimensional optical superlattice has emerged as a novel superfluid characterized by tunable lattice topologies and tailored band structures. In this work, we focus on the propagation of sound in such a novel system and have found new features on sound velocity, which arises from the interplay between the two lattices with different periodicity and is not present in the case of a condensate in a monochromatic optical lattice. Particularly, this is the first time that the sound velocity is found to first increase and then decrease as the superlattice strength increase…
A unified model of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate is proposed, combining of the logarithmic and Gross-Pitaevskii nonlinear terms in a wave equation, where the Gross-Pitaevskii term describes two-body interactions, as suggested by standard perturbation theory; while the logarithmic term is essentially non-perturbative, and takes into account quantum vacuum effects. The model is shown to have excellent agreement with sound propagation data in the condensate of cold sodium atoms known since the now classic works by Andrews and collaborators. The data also allowed us to place constraints on two…
In superfluid systems several sound modes can be excited, as for example first and second sound in liquid helium. Here, we excite propagating and standing waves in a uniform two-dimensional Bose gas and we characterize the propagation of sound in both the superfluid and normal regime. In the superfluid phase, the measured speed of sound is well described by a two-fluid hydrodynamic model, and the weak damping rate is well explained by the scattering with thermal excitations. In the normal phase the sound becomes strongly damped due to a departure from hydrodynamic behavior.
Superfluid $^4$He at a finite temperature is described by the two-fluid model with the normal fluid component and the superfluid component. We formulate the two-fluid model for two-component BECs, namely two-superfluid model, starting from the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The two-superfluid model well corresponds to the two-fluid model in superfluid $^4$He.In a special condition, the two sound modes in the two-superfluid model behave like first and second sounds in the two-fluid model of superfluid $^4$He.
We theoretically investigate sound modes in a weakly-interacting collisional Bose gas in $D$ dimensions. Using the Landau's two-fluid hydrodynamics and working within the Bogoliubov theory, we observe the hybridization of the first and second sound modes for $D\ge 2$. To model the recent measurements of the sound velocities in 2D, obtained in the weakly-interacting regime and around the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature, we derive a refined calculation of the superfluid density, finding a fair agreement with the experiment. In the 1D case, for which experimental results ar…
We theoretically investigate first and second sound of a two-dimensional (2D) atomic Bose gas in harmonic traps by solving Landau's two-fluid hydrodynamic equations. For an isotropic trap, we find that first and second sound modes become degenerate at certain temperatures and exhibit typical avoided crossings in mode frequencies. At these temperatures, second sound has significant density fluctuation due to its hybridization with first sound and has a divergent mode frequency towards the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. For a highly anisotropic trap, we derive the simplified o…
We study the propagation of a density wave in a magnetically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperatures. The thermal cloud is in the hydrodynamic regime and the system is therefore described by the two-fluid model. A phase-contrast imaging technique is used to image the cloud of atoms and allows us to observe small density excitations. The propagation of the density wave in the condensate is used to determine the speed of sound as a function of the temperature. We find the speed of sound to be in good agreement with calculations based on the Landau two-fluid model.
We consider the mass-imbalanced sensibility for the emergence of vortex patterns in the Bose-Einstein condensed binary mixture of rubidium-cesium ($^{85}$Rb-$^{133}$Cs), confined in quasi-two-dimensional harmonic traps, with one species linearly perturbed in one direction. Non-dipolar coupled species are chosen to highlight mass symmetry effects. We first analyze the condensed mixture in the unperturbed non-rotating regime, where radial phase separation is verified in the immiscible regime, which occurs for large ratio between inter- and intra-species repulsive interactions. By going to the li…
Using Landau's theory of two-fluid hydrodynamics we investigate the sound modes propagating in a uniform weakly-interacting superfluid Bose gas for values of temperature, up to the critical point. In order to evaluate the relevant thermodynamic functions needed to solve the hydrodynamic equations, including the temperature dependence of the superfluid density, we use Bogoliubov theory at low temperatures and the results of a perturbative approach based on Beliaev diagrammatic technique at higher temperatures. Special focus is given on the hybridization phenomenon between first and second sound…
In the present work we determine the speed of sound in a Bose-Einstein condensate confined by an isotropic harmonic oscillator trap. The deduction of this physical parameter is done resorting to the $N$-body Hamiltonian operator. The single-particle eigenfunctions that have been employed in this formalism are those stemming from the corresponding harmonic oscillator potential, and an expression for the dependence of this speed on the temperature is also deduced. These functions are used in the calculation of the scaterring length, etc. The situation for a Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium is …
In the present work the case of a chromium Bose-Einstein condensate is considered. The model includes not only the presence of the so-called contact interaction but also a long range and anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction has been included. Some thermodynamical properties are analyzed. For instance, the size of the condensate, chemical potential, speed of sound, number of particles, etc., are deduced. It will be shown that this dipole-dipole interaction implies the emergence of anisotropy, for example, in the speed of sound. The possible use of this anisotropy as a tool for the analyze of d…
We study the second sound dipole mode in a partially Bose-Einstein condensed gas. This mode is excited by spatially separating and releasing the center-of-mass of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with respect to the thermal cloud, after which the equilibration is observed. The oscillation frequency and the damping rate of this mode is studied for different harmonic confinements and temperatures. The measured damping rates close to the collisionless regime are found to be in good agreement with Landau damping. For increasing hydrodynamicity of the cloud we observe an increase of the damping.
Using Landau's theory of two-fluid hydrodynamics, we investigate first and second sound propagating in a two-dimensional Bose gas. We study the temperature and interaction dependence of both sound modes and show that their behaviour exhibits a deep qualitative change as the gas evolves from the weakly interacting to the strongly interacting regime. Special emphasis is given to the jump of both sounds at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, caused by the discontinuity of the superfluid density. We find that the excitation of second sound through a density perturbation becomes weaker …
We study the propagation of anisotropic sound and shock waves in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in three dimensions (3D) as well as in quasi-two (2D, disk shape) and quasi-one (1D, cigar shape) dimensions using the mean-field approach. In 3D, the propagation of sound and shock waves are distinct in directions parallel and perpendicular to dipole axis with the appearance of instability above a critical value corresponding to attraction. Similar instability appears in 1D and not in 2D. The numerical anisotropic Mach angle agrees with theoretical prediction. The numerical sound velocity in all …
The collective modes of a quantum liquid shape and impact its properties profoundly, including its emergent phenomena such as superfluidity. Here we present how a two-dimensional Bose gas responds to a moving lattice potential. In particular we discuss how the induced heating rate depends on the interaction strength and the temperature. This study is motivated by the recent measurements of Sobirey {\it et al.} arXiv:2005.07607 (2020), for which we provide a quantitative understanding. Going beyond the existing measurements, we demonstrate that this probing method allows to identify first and s…
Using linear response theory within the Random Phase Approximation, we investigate the propagation of sound in a uniform two dimensional (2D) Bose gas in the collisionless regime. We show that the sudden removal of a static density perturbation produces a damped oscillatory behavior revealing that sound can propagate also in the absence of collisions, due to mean-field interaction effects. Our analysis points out the crucial role played by Landau damping. We support our predictions by performing numerical simulations with the stochastic (projected) Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The results are co…
We study sound propagation in Bose-condensed gases in a highly-elongated harmonic trap at finite temperatures. This problem is studied within the framework of Zaremba-Nikuni-Griffin (ZNG) formalism, which consistent of a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation for the condensate and the kinetic equation for a thermal cloud. We extend the ZNG formalism to deal with a highly-anisotropic trap potential, and use it to simulate sound propagation using the trap parameters corresponding to the experiment on sound pulse propagation at finite temperature. We focus on the high-density two-fluid hydro…
We develop a microscopic theory of sound damping due to Landau mechanism in dilute gas with Bose condensate. It is based on the coupled evolution equations of the parameters describing the system. These equations have been derived in earlier works within a microscopic approach which employs the Peletminskii-Yatsenko reduced description method for quantum many-particle systems and Bogoliubov model for a weakly nonideal Bose gas with a separated condensate. The dispersion equations for sound oscillations were obtained by linearization of the mentioned evolution equations in the collisionless app…
Disorder modifies the sound-wave excitation spectrum of Bose-Einstein condensates. We consider the classical hydrodynamic limit, where the disorder correlation length is much longer than the condensate healing length. By perturbation theory, we compute the phonon lifetime and correction to the speed of sound. This correction is found to be negative in all dimensions, with universal asymptotics for smooth correlations. Considering in detail optical speckle potentials, we find a quite rich intermediate structure. This has consequences for the average density of states, particularly in one dimens…
A comparative study is done of the propagation of sound pulses in elongated Bose liquids and Bose-Einstein condensates in Gross-Pitaevskii and logarithmic models, by means of the Thomas-Fermi approximation. It is shown that in the linear regime the propagation of small density fluctuations is essentially one-dimensional in both models, in the direction perpendicular to the cross section of a liquid's lump. Under these approximations, it is shown that the speed of sound scales as a square root of particle density in the case of the Gross-Pitaevskii liquid/condensate, but it is constant in a cas…
We investigate the mean--field equilibrium solutions for a two--species immiscible Bose--Einstein condensate confined by a harmonic confinement with additional linear perturbations. We observe a range of equilibrium density structures, including `ball and shell' formations and axially/radially separated states, with a marked sensitivity to the potential perturbations and the relative atom number in each species. Incorporation of linear trap perturbations, albeit weak, are found to be essential to match the range of equilibrium density profiles observed in a recent Rb-87 - Cs-133 Bose-Einstein …
The two-fluid model is fundamental for the description of superfluidity. In the nearly-incompressible-liquid regime, it successfully describes first and second sound, corresponding, respectively, to density and entropy waves, in both liquid helium and unitary Fermi gases. Here, we study the two sounds in the opposite regime of a highly compressible fluid, using an ultracold $^{39}$K Bose gas in a three-dimensional box trap. We excite the longest-wavelength mode of our homogeneous gas, and observe two distinct resonant oscillations below the critical temperature, of which only one persists abov…
A Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with periodically modulated interactions (PMI) has emerged as a novel kind of periodic superfluid, which has been recently experimentally created using optical Feshbach resonance. In this paper, we are motivated to investigate the superfluidity of a BEC with PMI trapped in an optical lattice (OL). In particular, we explore the effects of PMI on the sound speed and the dynamical structure factor of the model system. Our numerical results, combined with the analytical results in both the weak-potential limit and the tight-binding limit, have shown that the PMI ca…
In Bose supefluids, the single-particle Green's function can be directly related to the superfluid velocity-velocity correlation function in the hydrodynamic regime. An explicit expression for the single-particle spectral density was originally written down by Hohenberg and Martin in 1965, starting from the two-fluid equations for a superfluid. We give a simple derivation of their results. Using these results, we calculate the relative weights of first and second sound modes in the single-particle spectral density as a function of temperature in a uniform Bose gas. We show that the second soun…
We have created an analogue of a black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate. In this sonic black hole, sound waves, rather than light waves, cannot escape the event horizon. A step-like potential accelerates the flow of the condensate to velocities which cross and exceed the speed of sound by an order of magnitude. The Landau critical velocity is therefore surpassed. The point where the flow velocity equals the speed of sound is the sonic event horizon. The effective gravity is determined from the profiles of the velocity and speed of sound. A simulation finds negative energy excitations, by mea…
We experimentally and theoretically investigate the lowest-lying axial excitation of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a cylindrical box trap. By tuning the atomic density, we observe how the nature of the mode changes from a single-particle excitation (in the low-density limit) to a sound wave (in the high-density limit). Throughout this crossover the measured mode frequency agrees with Bogoliubov theory. Using approximate low-energy models we show that the evolution of the mode frequency is directly related to the interaction-induced shape changes of the condensate and the excitation. Fi…
We investigate collective excitations of density fluctuations and a dynamic density structure factor in a mixture of Bose and Fermi gases in a normal phase. With decreasing temperature, we find that the frequency of the collective excitation deviates from that of the hydrodynamic sound mode. Even at temperature much lower than the Fermi temperature, the collective mode frequency does not reach the collisionless limit analogous to zero sound in a Fermi gas, because of collisions between bosons and fermions.
A number of recent experiments with nearly pure atomic Bose-Einstein condensates have confirmed the predicted dark soliton oscillations when under harmonic trapping. However, a dark soliton propagating in an inhomogeneous condensate has also been predicted to be unstable to the emission of sound waves. Although harmonic trapping supports an equilibrium between the co-existing soliton and sound, we show that the ensuing dynamics are sensitive to trap anharmonicities. Such anharmonicities can break the soliton-sound equilibrium and lead to the net decay of the soliton on a considerably shorter t…
In this work we present numerical study of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate perturbed by an alternating potential. The relevant physical situation has been recently realized in experiment, where the trapped condensate of $^{87}$Rb, being strongly perturbed, exhibits the set of spatial structures. Firstly, regular vortices are detected. Further, increasing either the excitation amplitude or modulation time results in the transition to quantum vortex turbulence, followed by a granular state. Numerical simulation of the nonequilibrium Bose-condensed system is based on the solution of the time-d…
We show theoretically that elongated vortex-antivortex dipoles can be created controllably in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates, using known experimental techniques. Vortex dipoles of sufficient length are unstable and cascade into slow vortex rings which ultimately decay via sound emission. This instability of antiparallel vortex line elements, which self-generates Kelvin waves on vortex loops and in trapped atomic gases, may play a role in bridging the Kelvin-wave and Kolmogorov-Richardson cascades of quantum turbulence.
We calculate the temperature dependence of the first and second sound velocities in the superfluid phase of a 2D dilute Bose gas by solving Landau's two fluid hydrodynamic equations. We predict the occurrence of a significant discontinuity in both velocities at the critical temperature, as a consequence of the jump of the superfluid density characterizing the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The key role of the thermal expansion coefficient is discussed. We find that second sound in this dilute Bose gas can be easily excited through a density perturbation, thereby, making the perspe…
Quantum droplets have been realized in experiments on binary boson mixtures and dipolar Bose gases. In these systems, the mean-field energy of the Bose-Einstein condensation is attractive, and the repulsive Lee-Huang-Yang energy is crucial for stability. The Bogoliubov theory incorrectly predicts that the phonon mode is dynamically unstable in the long-wavelength limit. In this work, we go beyond the Bogoliubov theory to study how the phonon mode is stabilized in the quantum droplet of a binary boson mixture. Similar to Beliaev's approach to a single-component Bose gas, we compute higher-order…
We study excitations of the spin-1 Bose gas at finite temperatures and in the presence of a not so strong magnetic field, or equivalently, when the gas sample is partially polarized. Motivated by the success of two-fluid hydrodynamics of scalar superfluids we develop a three-fluid hydrodynamic description to treat the low frequency and long wavelength excitations of the spin-1 Bose gas. We derive the coupled linear hydrodynamic equations of the three sounds and evaluate them numerically in a self-consistent mean field approximation valid for the dilute gas at the intermediate and critical temp…
By numerical solution and variational approximation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we studied the localization of a noninteracting and weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a weakly perturbed optical lattice in one and three dimensions. The perturbation achieved through a weak delocalizing expulsive or a linear potential as well as a weak localizing harmonic potential removes the periodicity of the optical lattice and leads to localization. We also studied some dynamics of the localized state confirming its stability.
In this paper a Gaussian impurity moving through an equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate at T = 0 is studied. The problem can be described by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is solved perturbatively. The analysis is done for systems of 2 and 3 spatial dimensions and generalises the work by [G.E. Astrakharchik and L.P. Pitaevskii, Phys. Rev. A 70, 013608 (2004)]. The Bogoliubov equation solutions for the condensate perturbed by a finite impurity are calculated in the co-moving frame, which are formally equivalent up to a dimension dependent form factor for general dimensions. From those solu…
Recently there has been renewed interest in second sound in superfluid Bose and Fermi gases. By using two-fluid hydrodynamic theory, we review the density response $χ_{nn}(\bq,ω)$ of these systems as a tool to identify second sound in experiments based on density probes. Our work generalizes the well-known studies of the dynamic structure factor $S(\bq,ω)$ in superfluid $^4$He in the critical region. We show that, in the unitary limit of uniform superfluid Fermi gases, the relative weight of second vs. first sound in the compressibility sum rule is given by the Landau--Placzek ratio $\lp\equiv…
A weakly interacting, spin-orbit coupled, ultracold, dilute Bose gas on a two-dimensional square lattice with an external Zeeman field is studied. We explore the plane and stripe wave phases of the system involving nonzero condensate momenta, which occur when the Zeeman field is below a critical value. Their excitation spectra are found using Bogoliubov theory and by two different routes. The validity of each method to obtain the excitation spectrum is discussed, and it is found that projection on the lowest single-particle band is an excellent approximation in the plane wave phase, while it i…
Spectrum of bosonic scalar-mode excitations in a normal Fermi liquid with a local scalar interaction is investigated for various values and momentum dependence of the scalar Landau parameter $f_0$ in the particle-hole channel. For $f_0 >0$ the conditions are found when the phase velocity on the spectrum of the zero sound acquires a minimum at a non-zero momentum. For $-1<f_0 <0$ there are only damped excitations, and for $f_0<-1$ the spectrum becomes unstable against a growth of scalar-mode excitations. An effective Lagrangian for the scalar excitation modes is derived after performing a boson…
Based on the modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation for atoms with intrinsic dipole moments which accounts for the relaxation of a condensate, the dipole-dipole interaction and the interaction of atoms with the electromagnetic field, the propagation of the sound and electromagnetic waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied. Owing to hybridization of the electromagnetic and sound waves near the resonance frequency of an atom, there arise the two branches of excitations in which the electromagnetic oscillations transform into the sound oscillations and vice versa. It is shown that under hybridi…
We numerically model experiments on the superfluid critical velocity of an elongated, harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate as reported by [P. Engels and C. Atherton, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 160405 (2007)]. These experiments swept an obstacle formed by an optical dipole potential through the long axis of the condensate at constant velocity. Their results found an increase in the resulting density fluctuations of the condensate above an obstacle velocity of $v\approx 0.3$ mm/s, suggestive of a superfluid critical velocity substantially less than the average speed of sound. However, our ana…
In light of the experimental evidence for the existence of a superfluid region in a Bose--Condensed Sodium gas a theoretical model is put forward. It will be shown that the predictions of the present work do match with the extant experimental readouts. As a by product we also calculate the speed of sound and compare it against the current experimental results.
Quantum turbulence deals with the phenomenon of turbulence in quantum fluids, such as superfluid helium and trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Although much progress has been made in understanding quantum turbulence, several fundamental questions remain to be answered. In this work, we investigated the entropy of a trapped BEC in several regimes, including equilibrium, small excitations, the onset of turbulence, and a turbulent state. We considered the time evolution when the system is perturbed and let to evolve after the external excitation is turned off. We derived an expression for …
Finite temperature hydrodynamic model is derived for the spin-1 ultracold bosons by the many-particle quantum hydrodynamic method. It is presented as the two fluid model of the BEC and normal fluid. The linear and quadratic Zeeman effects are included. Scalar and spin-spin like short-range interactions are considered in the first order by the interaction radius. It is also represented as the set of two nonlinear Pauli equations. The spectrum of the bulk collective excitations is considered for the ferromagnetic phase in the small temperature limit. The spin wave is not affected by the presence…
We provide an overview of the recent theoretical and experimental advances in the study of second sound in ultracold atomic gases. Starting from the Landau two fluid hydrodynamic equations we develop the theory of first and second sound in various configurations characterized by different geometries and quantum statistics. These include the weakly interacting 3D Bose gas, the strongly interacting Fermi gas at unitarity in the presence of highly elongated traps and the dilute 2D Bose gas, characterized by the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. An explicit comparison with the propagatio…
In this paper we study dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in presence of an anharmonic external potential. The theoretical model is based on the Muñoz-Mateo and Delgado (MMD) equation that describes cigar-shaped BECs with repulsive interatomic interactions. Since MMD equation presents a nonpolynomial form, the soliton-sound recombination cannot display the same pattern presented in the cubic model. We perform numerical simulations to compare both cases.
We develop an analytical approach for the description of an atomic Bose gas at unitarity. By focusing in first instance on the evaluation of the single-particle density matrix, we derive several universal properties of the unitary Bose gas, such as the chemical potential, the contact, the speed of sound, the condensate density and the effective interatomic interaction. The theory is also generalized to describe Bose gases with a finite scattering length and then reduces to the Bogoliubov theory in the weak-coupling limit.
