Quantum droplets have been realized in experiments on binary boson mixtures and dipolar Bose gases. In these systems, the mean-field energy of the Bose-Einstein condensation is attractive, and the repulsive Lee-Huang-Yang energy is crucial for stability. The Bogoliubov theory incorrectly predicts that the phonon mode is dynamically unstable in the long-wavelength limit. In this work, we go beyond the Bogoliubov theory to study how the phonon mode is stabilized in the quantum droplet of a binary boson mixture. Similar to Beliaev's approach to a single-component Bose gas, we compute higher-order contributions to the self-energy of the boson propagator. We find that the interaction between spin and phonon excitations is the key for the phonon stability. We obtain the sound velocity which can be tested by measuring the superfluid critical velocity of the droplet in experiments. Beliaev damping of this quantum droplet is also discussed.
Stabilized by quantum fluctuations, dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates can form self-bound liquidlike droplets in the mean-field unstable regime. However in the Bogoliubov theory, some phonon energies are imaginary in the long-wavelength limit, implying dynamical instability of this system. A similar instability appears in the Bogoliubov theory of a binary quantum droplet, and is removed due to higher-order quantum fluctuations as shown recently [1]. In this work, we study the phonon energy of a dipolar quantum droplet in the Beliaev formalism, and find that quantum fluctuations can enhance the…
In a binary quantum droplet, the interspecies attraction dominates over the intraspecies repulsions and the mean-field energy is unstable. The mechanical stability is restored by the repulsive Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) energy [1]. In the Bogoliubov theory of the binary quantum droplet, there are two branches of gapless excitations. The lower branch describes the phonon excitation and its energy is imaginary in the long-wavelength limit, implying dynamical instability. Recently it is found that the phonon energy is renormalized by higher-order quantum fluctuations and the dynamical instability is re…
We define a formalism of a self-consistent description of the ground state of a weakly interacting Bose system, accounting for higher order terms in expansion of energy in the diluteness parameter. The approach is designed to be applied to a Bose-Bose mixture in a regime of weak collapse where quantum fluctuations lead to stabilization of the system and formation of quantum liquid droplets. The approach is based on the Generalized Gross -- Pitaevskii equation accounting for quantum depletion and anomalous density terms. The equation is self-consistently coupled to modified Bogoliubov equations…
We calculate the collective excitations of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the regime where it self-binds into droplets stabilized by quantum fluctuations. We show that the filament-shaped droplets act as a quasi-one-dimensional waveguide along which low angular momentum phonons propagate. The evaporation (unbinding) threshold occurring as the atom number $N$ is reduced to the critical value $N_c$ is associated with a monopole-like excitation going soft as $ε_0\sim(N-N_c)^{1/4}$. Considering the system in the presence of a trapping potential, we quantify the crossover from a trap-bound c…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of the phonon mode in a unitary Fermi gas. Using two-photon Bragg spectroscopy, we measure excitation spectra at a momentum of approximately half the Fermi momentum, both above and below the superfluid critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$. Below $T_\mathrm{c}$, the dominant excitation is the Bogoliubov-Anderson (BA) phonon mode, driven by gradients in the phase of the superfluid order parameter. The temperature dependence of the BA phonon is consistent with a theoretical model based on the quasiparticle random phase approximation in which the dom…
We study the equilibrium properties of self-bound droplets in two-dimensional Bose mixtures employing the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. This theory allows one to understand both the many-body and temperature effects beyond the Lee-Huang-Yang description. We calculate higher-order corrections to the excitations, the sound velocity, and the energy of the droplet. Our results for the ground-state energy are compared with the diffusion Monte Carlo data and good agreement is found. The behavior of the depletion and anomalous density of the droplet is also discussed. At finite tempe…

We study normal modes propagating on top of the stable uniform background in arrays of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) droplets trapped in a deep optical lattice. Both the on-site mean-field dynamics of the droplets and their displacement due to the repulsive dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs) are taken into account. Dispersion relations for two modes, \textit{viz}., high- and low- frequency counterparts of optical and acoustic phonon modes in condensed matter, are derived analytically and verified by direct simulations, for both cases of the repulsive and attractive contact interactions…
We study the recently proposed effective field theory for the phonon of an arbitrary non-relativistic superfluid. After computing the one-loop phonon self-energy, we obtain the low temperature T contributions to the phonon dispersion law at low momentum, and see that the real part of those can be parametrized as a thermal correction to the phonon velocity. Because the phonons are the quanta of the sound waves, at low momentum their velocity should agree with the speed of sound. We find that our results match at order T^4ln(T) with those predicted by Andreev and Khalatnikov for the speed of sou…
An ultradilute quantum droplet is a self-bound liquid-like state recently observed in ultracold Bose-Einstein condensates. In all previous theoretical studies, it is described by a phenomenological low-energy effective theory, termed as the extended Gross\textendash Pitaevskii equation. Here, we microscopically derive the Gross\textendash Pitaevskii equation for the condensate and also for a pairing field in an inhomogeneous quantum droplet realized by Bose-Bose mixtures with attractive inter-species interaction. We show that the inclusion of the pairing field is essential, in order to have a …
We calculate the excitation spectrum of a one-dimensional self-bound quantum droplet in a two-component bosonic mixture described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with cubic and quadratic nonlinearities. The cubic term originates from the mean-field energy of the mixture proportional to the effective coupling constant $δg$, whereas the quadratic nonlinearity corresponds to the attractive beyond-mean-field contribution. The droplet properties are governed by a control parameter $γ\propto δg N^{2/3}$, where $N$ is the particle number. For large $γ>0$ the droplet features the flat-top shape…
Quantised sound waves -- phonons -- govern the elastic response of crystalline materials, and also play an integral part in determining their thermodynamic properties and electrical response (e.g., by binding electrons into superconducting Cooper pairs). The physics of lattice phonons and elasticity is absent in simulators of quantum solids constructed of neutral atoms in periodic light potentials: unlike real solids, traditional optical lattices are silent because they are infinitely stiff. Optical-lattice realisations of crystals therefore lack some of the central dynamical degrees of freedo…
We study the resonant excitation of sound modes from Josephson oscillations in Bose-Einstein condensates. From the simulations for various setups using the Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field equations and Josephson equations we observe additional tunneling currents induced by resonant phonons. The proposed experiment may be used for spectroscopy of phonons as well as other low-energy collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates. We also argue that the observed effect may mask the observation of Shapiro resonances if not carefully controlled.
We demonstrate the possibility of drastically reducing the velocity of phonons in quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. Our scheme consists of a dilute dark-soliton "gas" that provide the trapping for the impurities that surround the condensate. We tune the interaction between the impurities and the condensate particles in such a way that the dark solitons result in an array of {\it qutrits} (three-level structures). We compute the phonon-soliton coupling and investigate the decay rates of these three-level qutrits inside the condensate. As such, we are able to reproduce the phenome…
In the present work we consider models of quantum droplets in the presence of a defect in the form of a laser beam moving through the respective condensates including the Lee-Huang-Yang correction. Our analysis features separately an exploration of the existence, stability, bifurcations and dynamics in 1D, 2D and 3D settings. In the absence of an analytical solution of the problem, we provide an analysis of the speed of sound and observe how the states traveling with the defect may feature a saddle-center bifurcation as the speed or the strength of the defect is modified. Relevant bifurcation …
Disorder modifies the sound-wave excitation spectrum of Bose-Einstein condensates. We consider the classical hydrodynamic limit, where the disorder correlation length is much longer than the condensate healing length. By perturbation theory, we compute the phonon lifetime and correction to the speed of sound. This correction is found to be negative in all dimensions, with universal asymptotics for smooth correlations. Considering in detail optical speckle potentials, we find a quite rich intermediate structure. This has consequences for the average density of states, particularly in one dimens…

We analyze sound waves (phonons, Bogoliubov excitations) propagating on continuous wave (cw) solutions of repulsive $F=1$ spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), such as $^{23}$Na (which is antiferromagnetic or polar) and $^{87}$Rb (which is ferromagnetic). Zeeman splitting by a uniform magnetic field is included. All cw solutions to ferromagnetic BECs with vanishing $M_F=0$ particle density and non-zero components in both $M_F=\pm 1$ fields are subject to modulational instability (MI). MI increases with increasing particle density. MI also increases with differences in the components' wavenu…
