We prove that the number of limit cycles, which bifurcate from a two-saddle loop of a planar quadratic Hamiltonian system, under an arbitrary quadratic deformation, is less than or equal to three.
For flows, the singular cycles connecting saddle periodic orbit and saddle equilibrium can poten- tially result in the so-called singular horseshoe, which means the existence of a non-uniformly hyperbolic chaotic invariant set. However, it is very hard to find a specific dynamical system that exhibits such singular cycles in general. In this paper, the existence of the singular cycles involved in saddle periodic orbits is studied by two types of piecewise affine systems: one is the piecewise affine system having an admissible saddle point with only real eigenvalues and an admissible saddle per…
We prove that every heteroclinic saddle loop (a two-saddle cycle) occurring in an analytic finite-parameter family of plane analytic vector fields, may generate no more than a finite number of limit cycles within the family.
In this paper, we study limit cycle bifurcations for a class of general near-Hamiltonian systems near a heteroclinic loop with an elementary saddle and a nilpotent saddle. Firstly, we consider the behaviors of the unperturbed system, providing the phase portraits of the system and the necessary conditions for the appearance of a heteroclinic loop with an elementary saddle and a nilpotent saddle by using the relevant qualitative theory. Then, with consideration of the expression of the first-order Melnikov function, we derive its expansion near the heteroclinic loop by employing some techniques…
We prove that the cyclicity of a quadratic slow-fast integrable system of Darboux type with a double heteroclinic loop is finite and uniformly bounded.
We find an upper bound to the maximal number of limit cycles, which bifurcate from a hamiltonian two-saddle loop of an analytic vector field, under an analytic deformation.
We show that heterodimensional cycles can be born at the bifurcations of a pair of homoclinic loops to a saddle-focus equilibrium for flows in dimension 4 and higher. In addition to the classical heterodimensional connection between two periodic orbits, we found two new types of heterodimensional connections: one is a heteroclinic between a periodic orbit of index 2 and a homoclinic loop, and the other connects a periodic orbit of index 3 to the saddle-focus equilibrium.
In this paper, we deal with limit cycle bifurcations near a double homoclinic loop with a nilpotent saddle of order 2 by studying expansions of the first order Melnikov functions near the loop and coefficients in these expansions. More precisely, we prove that the perturbed system can have 11, 13, 14 or 16 limit cycles in a neighborhood of the loop under certain conditions. Finally, we give an example to illustrate the effectiveness of our main results.
Asymptotic quadratic growth rates of saddle connections and families of periodic cylinders on translation tori with n marked points are studied. For any marking the existence of limits of the quadratic growth rate is shown using elementary methods (not Ratners theorem). We study the growth rate limit as function of the marking. We give precise formulas for this function in the case of two marked points and describe the sets where the growth function is maximal and continuous in any case. For rational two markings we calculate the index of the Veech group in SL(2,Z) using two different ways.
In this paper we study a type of two singular point singular cycle where one heteroclinic orbit is the transversal intersection of the 2-dimensional stable manifold of one singular point and the 2-dimensional unstable manifold of other singular point. We show that this kind of singular cycle can give rise to a new mechanism of creation of chaos in 3-dimensional vector fields.
In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles that can bifurcate from a periodic annulus in discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system with three zones separated by two parallel straight lines, such that the linear differential systems that define the piecewise one have a center and two saddles. That is, the linear differential system in the region between the two parallel lines (i.e. the central subsystem) has a center and the others subsystems have saddles. We prove that if the central subsystem has a real or a boundary center, then we have at least six limit …
In this paper we show the finite cyclicity of the two graphics $(I_{12}^1)$ and $(I_{13}^1)$ through a triple nilpotent point of saddle type inside quadratic vector fields. These results contribute to the program launched in 1994 by Dumortier, Roussarie and Rousseau (DRR program) to show the existence of a uniform upper bound for the number of limit cycles for planar quadratic vector fields.
We consider diffeomorphisms $f$ with heteroclinic cycles associated to saddles $P$ and $Q$ of different indices. We say that a cycle of this type can be stabilized if there are diffeomorphisms close to $f$ with a robust cycle associated to hyperbolic sets containing the continuations of $P$ and $Q$. We focus on the case where the indices of these two saddles differ by one. We prove that, excluding one particular case (so-called twisted cycles that additionally satisfy some geometrical restrictions), all such cycles can be stabilized.
An in-depth analysis of nonautonomous bifurcations of saddle-node type for scalar differential equations $x'=-x^2+q(t)\,x+p(t)$, where $q\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ and $p\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ are bounded and uniformly continuous, is fundamental to explain the absence or occurrence of rate-induced tipping for the differential equation $y' =(y-(2/π)\arctan(ct))^2+p(t)$ as the rate $c$ varies on $[0,\infty)$. A classical attractor-repeller pair, whose existence for $c=0$ is assumed, may persist for any $c>0$, or disappear for a certain critical rate $c=c_0$, giving rise to rate-induc…
By applying a singular perturbation approach, canard limit cycles exhibited by a general family of singularly perturbed planar piecewise linear (PWL) differential systems are analyzed. The performed study involves both hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic canard limit cycles appearing after both a supercritical and a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. The obtained results are completely comparable with those obtained for smooth vector fields. In some sense, the manuscript can be understood as an extension towards the PWL framework of the results obtained for smooth systems by Krupa and Szmolyan [18]. In a…
In this article we study the existence of limit cycles in families of piecewise smooth differential equations having the unit circle as discontinuity region. We consider families presenting singularities of center or saddle type, visible or invisible, as well as the case without singularities. We establish an upper bound for the number of limit cycles and give examples showing that the maximum number of limit cycles can be reached. We also discuss the existence of homoclinic cycles for such differential equations in the saddle-center case.
This paper presents a mechanism for the coexistence of hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics arising in a neighbourhood of a conservative Bykov cycle where trajectories turn in opposite directions near the two saddle-foci. We show that {within the class of divergence-free vector fields that preserve the cycle,} tangencies of the invariant manifolds of two hyperbolic saddle-foci densely occur. The global dynamics is persistently dominated by heteroclinic tangencies and by the existence of infinitely many elliptic points coexisting with suspended hyperbolic horseshoes. A generalized version of …
First order policy optimization has been widely used in reinforcement learning. It guarantees to find the optimal policy for the state-feedback linear quadratic regulator (LQR). However, the performance of policy optimization remains unclear for the linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control where the LQG cost has spurious suboptimal stationary points. In this paper, we introduce a novel perturbed policy gradient (PGD) method to escape a large class of bad stationary points (including high-order saddles). In particular, based on the specific structure of LQG, we introduce a novel reparameterizati…
This paper, as a complement to the works by Hsu et al [SIAM. J. Appl. Math. 55 (1995)] and Huang et al [J. Differential Equations 257 (2014)], aims to examine the Hopf bifurcation and global dynamics of a predator-prey model of Leslie type with generalized Holling type III functional response for the two cases: (A) when it has a unique non-degenerate positive equilibrium; (B) when it has three distinct positive equilibria. For each case, the type and stability of each equilibrium, Hopf bifurcation at each weak focus, and the number and distribution of limit cycles in the first quadrant are stu…
In this paper, we study heterodimensional cycles of two-parameter families of 3-dimensional diffeomorphisms some element of which contains nondegenerate heterodimensional tangencies of the stable and unstable manifolds of two saddle points with different indexes, and prove that such diffeomorphisms can be well approximated by another element which has a quadratic homoclinic tangency associated to one of these saddle points. Moreover, it is shown that the tangency unfolds generically with respect to the family. This result together with some theorem in Viana, we detect strange attractors appear…
We prove that the asymptotic number of pairs of saddle connections with length smaller than $L$ with bounded virtual area is quadratic for almost every translation surface with respect to any ergodic $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-invariant measure. A key tool of the proof is that Siegel-Veech transforms of bounded functions with compact supports are in $L^{2+κ}$ for every $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-invariant measure.
In this paper, we study the existence of limit cycles in continuous and discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential systems with two or three zones separated by straight lines and such that the linear systems that define the piecewise one have isolated singular points, i.e. centers or saddles. In this case, we show that if the planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system is either continuous or discontinuous with two zones, then it has no limit cycles. Now, if the planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system is discontinuous with three zones, then it ha…
We formulate a two-team linear quadratic stochas- tic dynamic game featuring two opposing teams each with decentralized information structures. We introduce the concept of mutual quadratic invariance (MQI), which, analogously to quadratic invariance in (single team) decentralized control, defines a class of interacting information structures for the two teams under which optimal linear feedback control strate- gies are easy to compute. We show that, for zero-sum two- team dynamic games, structured state feedback Nash (saddle- point) equilibrium strategies can be computed from equivalent struct…
In this paper, we give a positive answer to the open question: Can there exist 4 limit cycles in quadratic near-integrable polynomial systems? It is shown that when a quadratic integrable system has two centers and is perturbed by quadratic polynomials, it can generate at least 4 limit cycles with (3,1) distribution. The method of Melnikov function is used.
Motivated by the study of billiards in polygons, we prove fine results for the distribution of gaps of directions of saddle connections on translation surfaces. As an application we prove that for almost every holomorphic differential $ω$ on a Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$ the smallest gap between saddle connection directions of length at most a fixed length decays faster than quadratically in the length. We also characterize the exceptional set: the decay rate is not faster than quadratic if and only if $ω$ is a lattice surface.
This paper is concerned with the bifurcation of limit cycles in general quadratic perturbations of quadratic codimension-four centers $Q_4$. Gavrilov and Iliev set an upper bound of {\it eight} for the number of limit cycles produced from the period annulus around the center. Based on Gavrilov-Iliev's proof, we prove in this paper that the perturbed system has at most five limit cycles which emerge from the period annulus around the center. We also show that there exists a perturbed system with three limit cycles produced by the period annulus of $Q_4$.
In this paper we study the bifurcations of a class of polycycles, called lips, occurring in generic three-parameter smooth families of vector fields on a Möbius band. The lips consists of a set of polycycles formed by two saddle-nodes, one attracting and the other repelling, connected by the hyperbolic separatrices of the saddle-nodes and by orbits interior to both nodal sectors. We determine, under certain genericity hypotheses, the maximum number of limits cycles that may bifurcate from a graphic belonging to the lips and we describe its bifurcation diagram.
This paper is concerned with a predator-prey model of Leslie type with simplified Holling type IV functional response, provided that it has either a unique non-degenerate positive equilibrium or three distinct positive equilibria. The type and stability of each equilibrium, Hopf cyclicity of each weak focus, and the number and distribution of limit cycles in the first quadrant are studied. It is shown that every equilibrium cannot be a center. If system has a unique positive equilibrium which is a weak focus, then its order is at most $2$ and it has Hopf cyclicity $2$. Moreover, some sufficien…
Heteroclinic cycles involving two saddle-foci, where the saddle-foci share both invariant manifolds, occur persistently in some symmetric differential equations on the 3-dimensional sphere. We analyse the dynamics around this type of cycle in the case when trajectories near the two equilibria turn in the same direction around a 1-dimensional connection - the saddle-foci have the same chirality. When part of the symmetry is broken, the 2-dimensional invariant manifolds intersect transversely creating a heteroclinic network of Bykov cycles. We show that the proximity of symmetry creates heterocl…
By using the Picard-Fuchs equation and the property of Chebyshev space to the discontinuous differential system, we obtain an upper bound of the number of limit cycles for the nongeneric quadratic reversible system when it is perturbed inside all discontinuous polynomials with degree $n$.
Rhythmic behaviors in neural systems often combine features of limit cycle dynamics (stability and periodicity) with features of near heteroclinic or near homoclinic cycle dynamics (extended dwell times in localized regions of phase space). Proximity of a limit cycle to one or more saddle equilibria can have a profound effect on the timing of trajectory components and response to both fast and slow perturbations, providing a possible mechanism for adaptive control of rhythmic motions. Reyn showed that for a planar dynamical system with a stable heteroclinic cycle (or separatrix polygon), small…
We study diffeomorphisms $f$ with heterodimensional cycles, that is, heteroclinic cycles associated to saddles $p$ and $q$ with different indices. Such a cycle is called fragile if there is no diffeomorphism close to $f$ with a robust cycle associated to hyperbolic sets containing the continuations of $p$ and $q$. We construct a codimension one submanifold of $\Difr(\SS^2\times \SS^1)$, $r\ge 1$, that consists of diffeomorphisms with fragile heterodimensional cycles. Our construction holds for any manifold of dimension $\ge 4$.
Let $f$ be a post-critically finite endomorphism (PCF map for short) on $\mathbb{P}^2$, let $J_1$ denote the Julia set and let $J_2$ denote the support of the measure of maximal entropy. In this paper we show that: 1. $J_1\setminus J_2$ is contained in the union of the (finitely many) basins of critical component cycles and stable manifolds of sporadic super-saddle cycles. 2. For every $x\in J_2$ which is not contained in the stable manifold of a sporadic super-saddle cycle, there is no Fatou disk containing $x$. Here sporadic means that the super-saddle cycle is not contained in a critical co…
We prove that a pair of heterodimensional cycles can be born at the bifurcations of a pair of Shilnikov loops (homoclinic loops to a saddle-focus equilibrium) having a one-dimensional unstable manifold in a volume-hyperbolic flow with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We also show that these heterodimensional cycles can belong to a chain-transitive attractor of the system along with persistent homoclinic tangency.
We apply the averaging theory of high order for computing the limit cycles of discontinuous piecewise quadratic and cubic polynomial perturbations of a linear center. These discontinuous piecewise differential systems are formed by two either quadratic, or cubic polynomial differential systems separated by a straight line. We compute the maximum number of limit cycles of these discontinuous piecewise polynomial perturbations of the linear center, which can be obtained by using the averaging theory of order $n$ for $n=1,2,3,4,5$. Of course these limit cycles bifurcate from the periodic orbits o…
The restricted version of the Hilbert 16th problem for quadratic vector fields requires an upper estimate of the number of limit cycles through a vector parameter that characterizes the vector fields considered and the limit cycles to be counted. In this paper we give an upper estimate of the number of limit cycles of quadratic vector fields $"σ$--distant from centers and $\ka $-distant from singular quadratic vector fields" provided that the limit cycles are $"δ$--distant from singular points and infinity".
It is well known that the sum of points of the period five cycle of the quadratic polynomial $f_{c}(x)=x^{2}+c$ is generally not one-valued. In this paper we will show that the sum of cycle points of the curves of period five is at most three-valued on a new coordinate plane, and that this result is essentially the best possible. The method of our proof relies on a implementing Gröbner-bases and especially extension theory from the theory of polynomial algebra.
We solve the center-focus problem in a class of piecewise quadratic polynomial differential systems with an invariant straight line. The separation curve is also a straight line which is not invariant. We provide families having at the origin a weak-foci of maximal order. In the continuous class, the cyclicity problem is also solved, being $3$ such maximal number. Moreover, for the discontinuous class but without sliding segment, we prove the existence of $7$ limit cycles of small amplitude.
Dilation surfaces are generalizations of translation surfaces where the transition maps of the atlas are translations and homotheties with a positive ratio. In contrast with translation surfaces, the directional flow on dilation surfaces may contain trajectories accumulating on a limit cycle. Such a limit cycle is called hyperbolic because it induces a nontrivial homothety. It has been conjectured that a dilation surface with no actual hyperbolic closed geodesic is in fact a translation surface. Assuming that a dilation surface contains a horizon saddle connection, we prove that the directions…
In this paper, using our bifurcational geometric approach, we solve the problem on the maximum number and distribution of limit cycles in the Kukles system representing a planar polynomial dynamical system with arbitrary linear and cubic right-hand sides and having an anti-saddle at the origin. We also apply alternatively the Wintner-Perko termination principle to solve this problem.
The main result of this paper is a proof using real analysis of the monotonicity of the topological entropy for the family of quadratic maps, sometimes called Milnor's Monotonicity Conjecture. In contrast, the existing proofs rely in one way or another on complex analysis. Our proof is based on tools and algorithms previously developed by the authors and collaborators to compute the topological entropy of multimodal maps. Specifically, we use the number of transverse intersections of the map iterates with the so-called critical line. The approach is technically simple and geometrical. The same…
In this paper, we generalize the Picard-Fuchs equation method to study the bifurcation of limit cycles of perturbed differential systems with two switching lines. We obtain the detailed expression of the corresponding first order Melnikov function which can be used to get the upper bound of the number of limit cycles for the perturbed system by using Picard-Fuchs equation. It is worth noting that we greatly simplify the computations and this method can be applied to study the number of limit cycles of other differential systems with two switching lines. Our results also show that the number of…
This paper contains two parts. In the first part, we shall study the Abelian integrals for Zoladek's example [13], in which it is claimed the existence integrals of 11 small-amplitude limit cycles around a singular point in a particular cubic vector filed. We will show that the basis chosen in the proof of [13] are not independent, which leads to failure in drawing the conclusion of the existence of 11 limit cycles in this example. In the second part, we present a good combination of Melnikov function method and focus value (or normal form) computation method to study bifurcation of limit cycl…
We prove that the $C^3$ diffeomorphisms on surfaces, exhibiting infinitely many sinksnear the generic unfolding of a quadratic homoclinic tangency of a dissipative saddle, can be perturbed along an infinite dimensional manifold of $C^3$ diffeomorphisms such that infinitely many sinks persist simultaneously. On the other hand, if they are perturbed along one-parameter families that unfold generically the quadratic tangencies, then at most a finite number of those sinks have continuation.
On the set of genotypes $Φ=\{1,...,m\}$ we introduce a binary relation generated by Volterra quadratic stochastic operator $V$ on $(m-1)$ dimensional simplex $S^{m-1}$ and prove that the operator $V$ be non-ergodic if either there exists a Hamiltonian cycle or one of the vertices $M_i=(δ_{1i},δ_{2i},...,δ_{mi})$ of the simplex $S^{m-1}$ is a source and restriction of $V$ to the invariant face $F_i=\{x\in S^{m-1}: x_i=0\}$ is non-ergodic. In this paper we prove this result for $m=2,3,4.$
In this paper we introduce new methods to prove the finite cyclicity of some graphics through a triple nilpotent point of saddle or elliptic type surrounding a center. After applying a blow-up of the family, yielding a singular 3-dimensional foliation, this amounts to proving the finite cyclicity of a family of limit periodic sets of the foliation. The boundary limit periodic sets of these families were the most challenging, but the new methods are quite general for treating such graphics. We apply these techniques to prove the finite cyclicity of the graphic $(I_{14}^1)$, which is part of the…
In this paper, by using Picard-Fuchs equations and Chebyshev criterion, we study the bifurcate of limit cycles for quadratic Hamilton system $S^{(2)}$ and $S^{(3)}$: $\dot{x}= y+2axy+by^2$, $\dot{y}=-x+x^2-ay^2$ with $a\in(-\frac{1}{2},1)$, $b=(1-a)(1+2a)^{1/2}$ and $a=1$, $b=0$ respectively, under perturbations of piecewise smooth polynomials with degree $n$. The discontinuity is the line $y=0$. We bound the number of zeros of first order Melnikov function which controls the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the center. It is proved that the upper bounds of the number of limit cycles fo…
We present a mechanism for the emergence of strange attractors (observable chaos) in a two-parameter periodically-perturbed family of differential equations on the plane. The two parameters are independent and act on different ways in the invariant manifolds of consecutive saddles in the cycle. When both parameters are zero, the flow exhibits an attracting heteroclinic cycle associated to two equilibria. The first parameter makes the two-dimensional invariant manifolds of consecutive saddles in the cycle to pull apart; the second forces transverse intersection. These relative positions may be …
In this paper we show how we can transform quadratic systems into new quadratic systems after some kind of birational transformations, the quadratic plane Cremona maps. We afterwards apply these transformations to the families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle. As a consequence, we provide a new family of quadratic systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree 5. Moreover we show how the known families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree greater than four are obtained using these transformations. We also provide the ph…
