We consider diffeomorphisms $f$ with heteroclinic cycles associated to saddles $P$ and $Q$ of different indices. We say that a cycle of this type can be stabilized if there are diffeomorphisms close to $f$ with a robust cycle associated to hyperbolic sets containing the continuations of $P$ and $Q$. We focus on the case where the indices of these two saddles differ by one. We prove that, excluding one particular case (so-called twisted cycles that additionally satisfy some geometrical restrictions), all such cycles can be stabilized.
In dimension three and under certain regularity assumptions, we construct a renormalisation scheme at the heterodimensional tangency of a non-transverse heterodimensional cycle associated with a pair of saddle-foci whose limit dynamic is a center-unstable Hénon-like family displaying blender-horseshoes. As a consequence, the initial cycle can be approximated in higher regularity topologies by diffeomorphisms having blender-horseshoes.
We show that heterodimensional cycles can be born at the bifurcations of a pair of homoclinic loops to a saddle-focus equilibrium for flows in dimension 4 and higher. In addition to the classical heterodimensional connection between two periodic orbits, we found two new types of heterodimensional connections: one is a heteroclinic between a periodic orbit of index 2 and a homoclinic loop, and the other connects a periodic orbit of index 3 to the saddle-focus equilibrium.
We prove that heterodimensional cycles can be created by unfolding a pair of homoclinic tangencies in a certain class of C-infinity diffeomorphisms. This implies the existence of a C2- open domain in the space of dynamical systems with a certain type of symmetry where systems with heterodimensional cycles are dense in C-infinity. In particular, we describe a class of three-dimensional flows with a Lorenz-like attractor such that an arbitrarily small perturbation of any such flow can belong to this domain - in this case the corresponding heterodimensional cycles belong to a chain-transitive att…
We prove that a pair of heterodimensional cycles can be born at the bifurcations of a pair of Shilnikov loops (homoclinic loops to a saddle-focus equilibrium) having a one-dimensional unstable manifold in a volume-hyperbolic flow with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We also show that these heterodimensional cycles can belong to a chain-transitive attractor of the system along with persistent homoclinic tangency.
We present a sufficient condition for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms having heterodimensional cycles to be approximated arbitrarily well by diffeomorphisms with non-trivial contracting wandering domains via several perturbations. The key idea is to show that diffeomorphisms with heterodimensional cycles associated with saddle points with non-real eigenvalues can be approximated by diffeomorphisms with generalized homoclinic tangencies presented by Tatjer. The generalized homoclinic tangency is an organizing center including a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation, by which one can obtain non-trivial …
In this paper, we study heterodimensional cycles of two-parameter families of 3-dimensional diffeomorphisms some element of which contains nondegenerate heterodimensional tangencies of the stable and unstable manifolds of two saddle points with different indexes, and prove that such diffeomorphisms can be well approximated by another element which has a quadratic homoclinic tangency associated to one of these saddle points. Moreover, it is shown that the tangency unfolds generically with respect to the family. This result together with some theorem in Viana, we detect strange attractors appear…
A heterodimensional cycle consists of a pair of heteroclinic connections between two saddle periodic orbits with unstable manifolds of different dimensions. Recent theoretical work on chaotic dynamics beyond the uniformly hyperbolic setting has shown that heterodimensional cycles may occur robustly in diffeomorphisms of dimension at least three. We study a concrete example of a heterodimensional cycle in the continuous-time setting, specifically in a four-dimensional vector field model of intracellular calcium dynamics. By employing advanced numerical techniques, Zhang, Krauskopf and Kirk [Dis…
We consider $C^r$ ($r\geqslant 1$) diffeomorphisms $f$ defined on manifolds of dimension $\geqslant 3$ with homoclinic tangencies associated to saddles. Under generic properties, we show that if the saddle is homoclinically related to a blender then the diffeomorphism $f$ can be {$C^r$} approximated by diffeomorphisms with {$C^1$} robust heterodimensional cycles. As an application, we show that the classic Simon-Asaoka's examples of diffeomorphisms with $C^1$ robust homoclinic tangencies also display {$C^1$} robust heterodimensional cycles. In a second application, we consider homoclinic tange…
We consider three-dimensional diffeomorphisms having simultaneously heterodimensional cycles and heterodimensional tangencies associated to saddle-foci. These cycles lead to a completely nondominated bifurcation setting. For every $r\geqslant 2$, we exhibit a class of such diffeomorphisms whose heterodimensional cycles can be $C^r$ stabilised and (simultaneously) approximated by diffeomorphisms with $C^r$ robust homoclinic tangencies. The complexity of our nondominated setting with plenty of homoclinic and heteroclinic intersections is used to overcome the difficulty of performing $C^r$ pertur…
We give an explicit family of polynomial maps called center unstable Hénon-like maps and prove that they exhibits blenders for some parametervalues. Using this family, we also prove the occurrence of blenders near certain non-transverse heterodimensional cycles under high regularity assumptions. The proof involves a renormalization scheme along heteroclinic orbits. We also investigate the connection between the blender and the original heterodimensional cycle.

We study diffeomorphisms $f$ with heterodimensional cycles, that is, heteroclinic cycles associated to saddles $p$ and $q$ with different indices. Such a cycle is called fragile if there is no diffeomorphism close to $f$ with a robust cycle associated to hyperbolic sets containing the continuations of $p$ and $q$. We construct a codimension one submanifold of $\Difr(\SS^2\times \SS^1)$, $r\ge 1$, that consists of diffeomorphisms with fragile heterodimensional cycles. Our construction holds for any manifold of dimension $\ge 4$.
As a model to provide a hands-on, elementary understanding of chaotic dynamics in dimension three, we introduce a $C^2$-open set of diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb R^3$ having two horseshoes with different dimensions of instability. We prove that: the unstable set of one horseshoe and the stable set of the other are of Hausdorff dimension nearly $2$ whose cross sections are Cantor sets; the intersection of the unstable and stable sets contains a fractal set of Hausdorff dimension nearly $1$. As a corollary we detect $C^2$-robust heterodimensional cycles. Our proof employs the theory of normally hy…
In the spirit of Kolmogorov typicality, we introduce the notion of germ-typicality: in a space of dynamics, it encompass all these phenomena that occur for a dense and open subset of parameters of any generic parametrized family of systems. For any $2\le r<\infty$, we prove that the Newhouse phenomenon (the coexistence of infinitely many sinks) is locally $C^r$-germ-typical, nearby a dissipative bicycle: a dissipative homoclinic tangency linked to a special heterodimensional cycle. During the proof we show a result of independent interest: the stabilization of some heterodimensional cycles for…
We consider C^r-diffeomorphisms of a compact smooth manifold having a pair of robust heterodimensional cycles where r is a positive integer or infinity. We prove that if certain conditions about the signatures of non-linearities and Schwarzian derivatives of the transition maps are satisfied, then by giving C^r arbitrarily small perturbation, we can produce a periodic point at which the first return map in the center direction is C^r-flat. As a consequence, we will prove that C^r-generic diffeomorphisms in the neighborhood of the initial diffeomorphism exhibit super-exponential growth of numbe…
We construct open sets of degenerate unfoldings of heterodimensional cycles of any co-index $c>0$ and homoclinic tangencies of arbitrary codimension $c>0$. These sets are known to be the support of unexpected phenomena in families of diffeomorphisms, such as the Kolmogorov typical co-existence of infinitely many attractors. As a prerequisite we also construct robust homoclinic tangencies of large codimension which cannot be inside a strong partially hyperbolic set.
We explain how to obtain non-trivial historic contractive wandering domains for a dense set of diffeomorphisms in certain type of $C^r$-Newhouse domains of homoclinic tangencies in dimension $d\geq 3$ and $r\geq 1$. In particular, this gives for the first time a contribution to Takens' last problem in the $C^1$ topology and in dimension $d>2$. We show how these Newhouse domains can be obtained arbitrarily close to diffeomorphisms exhibiting heterodimensional cycles (in dimension $d=3$) or non-transverse equidimensional cycles (in any dimension $d\ge 3$) associated with periodic points with non…
Difference equations, such as a Ricker map, for an increased value of the parameter, experience instability of the positive equilibrium and transition to deterministic chaos. To achieve stabilization, various methods can be applied. Proportional Feedback control suggests a proportional reduction of the state variable at every $k$th step. First, if $k \neq 1$, a cycle is stabilized rather than an equilibrium. Second, the equation can incorporate an additive noise term, describing the variability of the environment, as well as multiplicative noise corresponding to possible deviations in the cont…
Pulse stabilization of cycles with Prediction-Based Control including noise and stochastic stabilization of maps with multiple equilibrium points is analyzed for continuous but, generally, non-smooth maps. Sufficient conditions of global stabilization are obtained. Introduction of noise can relax restrictions on the control intensity. We estimate how the control can be decreased with noise and verify it numerically.
We stabilize a prescribed cycle or an equilibrium of the difference equation using pulsed stochastic control. Our technique, inspired by the Kolmogorov's Law of Large Numbers, activates a stabilizing effect of stochastic perturbation and allows for stabilization using a much wider range for the control parameter than would be possible in the absence of noise. Our main general result applies to both Prediction-Based and Target-Oriented Controls. This analysis is the first to make use of the stabilizing effects of noise for Prediction-Based Control; the stochastic version has been examined in th…
We consider optimization problems associated to a delayed feedback control (DFC) mechanism for stabilizing cycles of one dimensional discrete time systems. In particular, we consider a delayed feedback control for stabilizing $T$-cycles of a differentiable function $f: \mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ of the form $$x(k+1) = f(x(k)) + u(k)$$ where $$u(k) = (a_1 - 1)f(x(k)) + a_2 f(x(k-T)) + \cdots + a_N f(x(k-(N-1)T))\;,$$ with $a_1 + \cdots + a_N = 1$. Following an approach of Morgül, we associate to each periodic orbit of $f$, $N \in \mathbb{N}$, and $a_1,\ldots,a_N$ an explicit polynomial wh…
