Using a radio frequency tunnel diode oscillator technique, we measured the temperature dependence of the in-plane London penetration depth $Δλ_{ab}(T)$ in Fe$_{1+y}$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x})$ single crystals, down to temperatures as low as 50 mK. A significant number of samples, with nominal Se concentration $x$=0.36, 0.40, 0.43 and 0.45 respectively, were studied and in many cases we found that $Δλ_{ab}(T)$ shows an upturn below 0.7 K, indicative of a paramagnetic type contribution. After subtracting the magnetic background, the low temperature behavior of penetration depth is best described by a power law with exponent $n\approx2$ and with no systematic dependence on the Se concentration. Most importantly, in the limit of T$\rightarrow$0, in some samples we observed a narrow region of linear temperature dependence of penetration depth, suggestive of nodes in the superconducting gap of Fe$_{1+y}$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x})$.
We report measurements of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth in different quality polycrystalline samples of noncentrosymmetric LaNiC2 down to 0.05 K. This compound has no magnetic phases and breaks time-reversal symmetry. In our highest quality sample we observe a T^2 dependence below 0.4Tc indicative of nodes in the energy gap. We argue that previous results suggesting conventional s-wave behavior may have been affected by magnetic impurities.
We formulate a model describing the doping ($x$) and temperature ($T$) dependence of the $ab$-plane and c-axis penetration depth of a cuprate superconductor. The model incorporates the suppression of the superfluid density with underdoping as the system approaches the Mott-Hubbard insulating state by augmenting a d-wave BCS model with a phenomenological charge renormalization factor that is vanishingly small for states away from the nodes of the d-wave pair potential but close to unity in the vicinity of the nodes. The c-axis penetration depth is captured within a model of incoherent electron …
Spanning a broad range of physical systems, complex symmetry breaking is widely recognized as a hallmark of competing interactions. This is exemplified in superfluid $^3$He which has multiple thermodynamic phases with spin and orbital quantum numbers $S=1$ and $L=1$, that emerge on cooling from a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid. The heavy fermion compound UPt$_3$ exhibits similar behavior clearly manifest in its multiple superconducting phases. However, consensus as to its order parameter symmetry has remained elusive. Our small angle neutron scattering measurements indicate a linear tempera…
We study the penetration field $H_{\rm P}$ for vortex nanocrystals nucleated in micron-sized samples with edges aligned along the nodal and anti-nodal directions of the d-wave superconducting parameter of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8 - δ}$. Here we present evidence that the $H_{\rm P}$ for nanocrystals nucleated in samples with edges parallel to the nodal direction is larger than for the antinodal case, $\sim 72$\,\% at low temperatures. This finding supports the theoretical proposal that surface Andreev bound states appearing in a sample with edges parallel to the nodal direction would produce a…
The issue of whether the quantum critical point (QCP) is hidden inside unconventional superconductors is a matter of hot debate. Although a prominent experiment on London penetration depth has demonstrated the existence of the QCP in the isovalent-doped iron-based superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, with the observation of a sharp peak in the penetration depth in the vicinity of the disappearance of magnetic order at zero temperature, the nature of such an emerging QCP remains unclear. Here, we provide a unique picture to understand well the phenomena of the QCP based on the framewor…
High resolution measurements of superfluid density and broadband quasiparticle conductivity have been used to probe the low energy excitation spectrum of nodal quasiparticles in underdoped YBCO. Penetration depth is measured to temperatures as low as 0.05 K. Microwave conductivity is measured from 0.1 to 20 GHz and is a direct probe of zero-energy quasiparticles. The data are compared with predictions for a number of theoretical scenarios that compete with or otherwise modify pure d-wave superconductivity, in particular commensurate and incommensurate spin and charge density waves; d + i s and…
The in-plane magnetic penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured down to 0.4 K in single crystals of electron-doped superconductors, Pr$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (PCCO) and Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (NCCO). In PCCO, the superfluid density varies as $T^2$ from 0.025 up to roughly 0.3 $T/T_c$ suggestive of a d-wave state with impurities. In NCCO, $λ(T)$ shows a pronounced upturn for $T < 4$ K due to the paramagnetic contribution of Nd$^{3+}$ ions. Fits to an s-wave order parameter over the standard BCS range ($T/T_c$ = 0.32) limit any gap to less than $Δ_{min} (0)/T_c = 0.57$ in NCCO. …
Recent findings of anomalous super-linear scaling of low temperature ($T$) penetration depth (PD) in several nodal superconductors near putative quantum critical points suggest that the low temperature PD can be a useful probe of quantum critical fluctuations in a superconductor. On the other hand, cuprates which are poster child nodal superconductors have not shown any such anomalous scaling of PD, despite growing evidence of quantum critical points. Then it is natural to ask when and how can quantum critical fluctuations cause anomalous scaling of PD? Carrying out the renormalization group c…
The London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured in polycrystalline powders of the non-oxide perovskite superconductor $\mathrm{MgCNi_3}$ by using a sensitive tunnel-diode resonator technique. The penetration depth exhibits distinctly non s-wave BCS low-temperature behavior, instead showing quadratic temperature dependence, suggestive of a nodal order parameter.
We examine the Meissner state nonlinear electrodynamic effects on the field and angular dependence of the low temperature penetration depth, $λ$, of superconductors in several kinds of unconventional pairing states, with nodes or deep minima (``quasinodes'') in the energy gap. Our calculations are prompted by the fact that, for typical unconventional superconducting material parameters, the predicted size of these effects for $λ$ exceeds the available experimental precision for this quantity by a much larger factor than for others. We obtain expressions for the nonlinear component of the penet…
The magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ and the upper critical field $% μ_{0}H_{c2}(T_{c})$ of the non-centrosymmetric (NCS) superconductor Y$_{2} $C$_{3}$ have been measured using a tunnel-diode (TDO) based resonant oscillation technique. We found that the penetration depth $λ(T)$ and its corresponding superfluid density $ρ_{s}(T)$ show linear temperature dependence at very low temperatures ($T\ll T_{c}$), indicating the existence of line nodes in the superconducting energy gap. Moreover, the upper critical field $μ_{0}H_{c2}(T_{c})$ presents an upturn at low temperatures with a rather high val…
Temperature-dependent London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured in optimally - doped, $x=$0.35, as-grown ($T_c \approx$25 K, RRR=$ρ(300K)/ρ(T_c)$=4.5) and annealed ($T_c \approx$35 K, RRR=6.4) single crystals of SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ iron - based superconductor. Annealing increases the RRR and decreases the absolute value of the London penetration depth from $λ(0) = 300 \pm 10$ nm in as-grown sample to $λ(0) = 275 \pm 10$ nm. At low temperatures, $λ(T) \sim T$ indicating superconducting gap with line nodes. Analysis of the full - temperature range superfluid density is consisten…
We describe a method for direct measurement of the magnetic penetration length in thin (10 - 100 nm) superconducting structures having overall dimensions in the range 1 to 100 micrometers. The method is applicable for broadband magnetic fields from dc to MHz frequencies.
The isotope coefficient $β$ of the magnetic penetration depth in the superconducting state is studied at T=0 for a $d$-CDW and a nodal metal model. Disregarding superconductivity the Fermi surface of the first model possesses arcs whereas the second model has no arcs. We show that a large increase of $β$ in the pseudogap region is generically incompatible with Fermi arcs in the pseudogap state. Thus only the second model shows a large increase of $β$ with decreasing doping. The required electron-phonon coupling is small and compatible with first-principles calculations based on the local densi…
High-precision measurements of magnetic penetration depth $λ$ in clean single crystals of LiFeAs and LiFeP superconductors reveal contrasting low-energy quasiparticle excitations. In LiFeAs the low-temperature $λ(T)$ shows a flat dependence indicative of a fully gapped state, which is consistent with previous studies. In contrast, LiFeP exhibits a $T$-linear dependence of superfluid density $\propto λ^{-2}$, indicating a nodal superconducting order parameter. A systematic comparison of quasiparticle excitations in the 1111, 122, and 111 families of iron-pnictide superconductors implies that th…
Infinite-layer nickelates present a new family of potential unconventional superconductors. A key open question is the superconducting pairing symmetry. We present low-temperature measurements of the London penetration depth in optimally doped La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_{2}, Pr_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_{2}, and Nd_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_{2}. For La and Pr-nickelates, the superfluid density shows a quadratic temperature dependence, indicating nodal superconductivity in the presence of disorder. Nd-nickelate exhibits complex low-temperature behavior, which we attribute to magnetic impurities. These results are consi…
The in-plane penetration depth of Sr$_{0.88}$La$_{0.12}$CuO$_{2+x}$ thin films at various doping obtained from oxygen reduction has been measured, using AC susceptibility measurements. For the higher doping samples, the superfluid density deviates strongly from the s-wave behavior, suggesting, in analogy with other electron-doped cuprates, a contribution from a nodal hole pocket, or a small gap on the Fermi surface such as an anisotropic s-wave order parameter. The low value of the superfluid densities, likely due to a strong doping-induced disorder, places the superconducting transition of ou…
The London penetration depth, lambda{ab}(T), is reported for thin films of the electron-doped superconductor Pr{2-x}Ce{x}CuO{4-y} at three doping levels (x = 0.13, 0.15 and 0.17). Measurements down to 0.35 K were carried out using a tunnel diode oscillator with excitation fields applied both perpendicular and parallel to the conducting planes. For all samples and both field orientations lambda{ab}(T) showed power law behavior implying a superconducting gap with nodes.
We investigate the free energy and the penetration depth of a quasi-two-dimensional d-wave superconductor in the presence of a weak magnetic field by taking account of thermal, nonlocal and nonlinear effects. In an approximation in which the superfluid velocity $v_s$ is assumed to be slowly varying, the free energy is calculated and compared with available results in several limiting cases. It is shown that either nonlocal or nonlinear effects may cut off the linear-$T$ dependence of both the free energy and the penetration depth in all the experimental geometries. At extremely low $T$, the no…
We report an investigation of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ on single crystals of the layered superconductor Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$, where the crystal structure has quasi-one-dimensional characteristics. A linear temperature dependence of $Δλ(T)$ is observed for $T\ll T_c$, in contrast to the exponential decay of fully gapped superconductors. This indicates the existence of line nodes in the superconducting energy gap. A detailed analysis shows that the normalized superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$, which is converted from $Δλ(T)$, can be well described by a multigap scenario, with nodes in one…
We measure changes in the penetration depth $λ$ of the $T_c \approx 6$ K superconductor LaFePO. In the process scanning SQUID susceptometry is demonstrated as a technique for accurately measuring {\it local} temperature-dependent changes in $λ$, making it ideal for studying early or difficult-to-grow materials. $λ$ of LaFePO is found to vary linearly with temperature from 0.36 to $\sim$2 K, with a slope of 143$\pm$15 Å/K, suggesting line nodes in the superconducting order parameter. The linear dependence up to $\sim T_c/3$ is similar to the cuprate superconductors, indicating well-developed no…
CaSb2 is a topological nodal-line semimetal that becomes superconducting below 1.6 K, providing an ideal platform to investigate the interplay between topologically nontrivial electronic bands and superconductivity. In this work, we investigated the superconducting order parameter of CaSb2 by measuring its magnetic penetration depth change Δλ(T) down to 0.07 K, using a tunneling diode oscillator (TDO) based technique. Well inside the superconducting state, Δλ(T) shows an exponential activated behavior, and provides direct evidence for a nodeless superconducting gap. By analyzing the temperatur…
Unconventional superconductivity has recently been discovered in the first iron-based superconducting silicide LaFeSiH. By using the complementary techniques of muon spin rotation, tunneling diode oscillator and density functional theory, we investigate the magnetic penetration depth and thereby the superconducting gap of this novel high-temperature superconductor. We find that the magnetic penetration depth displays a sub-$T^2$ behavior in the low-temperature regime below $T_c/3$, which evidences a nodal structure of the gap (or a gap with very deep minima). Even if the topology of the comput…
The newly discovered noncentrosymmetric superconductor ThCoC$_{2}$ exhibits numerous unconventional behavior in the field dependent heat capacity data. Here we present the first measurement of the gap symmetry of ThCoC$_{2}$ by muon spin rotation/relaxation $(μ$SR) measurements. Temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth measured using the transverse field $μ$SR measurement reveal the evidence of nodal pairing symmetry. To understand these findings, we carry out the calculations of superconducting pairing eigenvalue and eigenfunction symmetry due to the spin-fluctuation mechanism…
Nodal-line semimetals are topologically non-trivial states of matter featuring band crossings along a closed curve, i.e. nodal-line, in momentum space. Through a detailed analysis of the electronic structure, we show for the first time that the normal state of the superconductor NaAlSi, with a critical temperature of $T_{\rm c} \approx$ 7 K, is a nodal-line semimetal, where the complex nodal-line structure is protected by non-symmorphic mirror crystal symmetries. We further report on muon spin rotation experiments revealing that the superconductivity in NaAlSi is truly of bulk nature, featurin…
We have investigated the doping dependence of the penetration depth vs. temperature in electron doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4-δ}$ using a model which assumes the uniform coexistence of (mean-field) antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. Despite the presence of a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing gap in the underlying spectrum, we find nodeless behavior of the low-$T$ penetration depth in underdoped case, in accord with experimental results. As doping increases, a linear-in-$T$ behavior of the penetration depth, characteristic of d-wave pairing, emerges as the lower magnetic band crosses the Fermi level…
We have succeeded in growing very high purity (99.995%) YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta} crystals in BaZrO_3 crucibles and have measured Delta-lambda(T) and R_s(T) at 1 GHz in crystals with various oxygen treatments. For an oxygen vacancy level of delta=0.007, Delta-lambda and R_s essentially reproduce our previous results and show no sign of the existence of the two order parameter components as recently reported by Srikanth et al. on BaZrO_3-grown crystals. For other oxygen concentrations, we have in some cases observed deviations from the linear low T dependence of Delta-lambda, but never any sign of a…
We investigate the effect of anti-ferromagnetic (AF) quantum criticality on the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ in line-nodal superconductors, including the cuprates, the iron pnictides, and the heavy-fermion superconductors. The critical magnetic fluctuation renormalizes the current vertex and drastically enhances zero-temperature penetration depth $λ(0)$, which is more remarkable in the iron-pnictide case due to the Fermi-surface topology. Additional temperature ($T$) dependence of the current renormalization makes the expected $T$-linear behavior at low temperatures approaching to $T^{1.5…
The newly discovered superconductors A2Cr3As3 (A = K, Rb, Cs), with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure have attracted considerable interest. The crystal structure consists of double-walled tubes of [Cr3As3]^(2-) that extend along the c-axis. Previously we reported measurements of the change in London penetration depth of polycrystalline samples of K2Cr3As3 using a tunnel diode oscillator based technique, which show a linear temperature dependence at low temperatures, giving evidence for line nodes in the superconducting gap. Here we report similar measurements of the penetration depth f…
The London penetration depth, $λ$, is directly related to the density, $n_{s}$, of the Cooper pairs ($λ^{2}\propto 1/n_{s}$) and its variation with temperature provides valuable insight into the pairing mechanism. Here we study the evolution with doping of the temperature dependence of the in-plane ($λ_{ab}$) and out-of-plane ($λ_{c}$) penetration depths in single crystals of electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. As is the case for other pnictides, $λ(T) \sim T^n$ over the whole doping range and this behavior extends down to at least $T=T_c/100$, setting a very small upper limit on th…
We have revisited the magnetic penetration depth data on the electron-doped cuprates Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-y) and La(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-y). It is proposed that the transition between the nodal-gap-like and nodeless-gap-like behaviors upon electron-doping [see, e.g., M. Kim et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 87001 (2003)] can be due to a scattering of the quasiparticles in the d-wave superconducting state by an incipient or weak antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave. This conjecture is supported by the inelastic neutron scattering and angle-resolved photoemission experiments on some closely related electron-do…
We report muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on hydrothermally-grown single crystals of the tetragonal superconductor~FeS, which help to clarify the controversial magnetic state and superconducting gap symmetry of this compound. $μ$SR time spectra were obtained from 280~K down to 0.025~K in zero field (ZF) and applied fields up to 20 mT. In ZF the observed loss of initial asymmetry (signal amplitude) and increase of depolarization rate~$Λ_\mathrm{ZF}$ below 10~K indicate the onset of static magnetism, which coexists with superconductivity below $T_c$. Transverse-field $μ$SR…
We study the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth in a 3D topological superconductor (TSC), incorporating the paramagnetic current due to the surface states. A TSC is predicted to host a gapless 2D surface Majorana fluid. In addition to the bulk-dominated London response, we identify a $T^3$ power-law-in-temperature contribution from the surface, valid in the low-temperature limit. Our system is fully gapped in the bulk, and should be compared to bulk nodal superconductivity, which also exhibits power-law behavior. Power-law temperature dependence of the penetration depth c…
High-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors are characterized by a strong momentum-dependent anisotropy between the low energy excitations along the Brillouin zone diagonal (nodal direction) and those along the Brillouin zone face (antinodal direction). Most obvious is the d-wave superconducting gap, with the largest magnitude found in the antinodal direction and no gap in the nodal direction. Additionally, while antinodal quasiparticle excitations appear only below $T_c$, superconductivity is thought to be indifferent to nodal excitations as they are regarded robust and insensitive to $T_c$. Here we r…
In several iron-arsenide superconductors there is strong evidence for a fully gapped superconducting state consistent with either a conventional s-wave symmetry or an unusual $s_\pm$ state where there the gap changes sign between the electron and hole Fermi surface sheets. Here we report measurements of the penetration depth $λ(T)$ in very clean samples of the related iron-phosphide superconductor, LaFePO, at temperatures down to $\sim$ 100 mK. We find that $λ(T)$ varies almost perfectly linearly with $T$ strongly suggesting the presence of gap nodes in this compound. Taken together with other…
Identifying the uniqueness of FeP-based superconductors may shed new lights on the mechanism of superconductivity in iron-pnictides. Here, we report nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) studies on LiFeP and LiFeAs which have the same crystal structure but different pnictogen atoms. The NMR spectrum is sensitive to inhomogeneous magnetic fields in the vortex state and can provide the information on the superconducting pairing symmetry through the temperature dependence of London penetration depth $λ_L$. We find that $λ_L$ saturates below $T \sim 0.2$ $T_c$ in LiFeAs, where $T_c$ is the superconducti…
The London penetration depth, $λ(T)$ was measured in single crystals of Ce$_{1-x}R_x$CoIn$_5$, $R$=La, Nd and Yb down to 50~mK ($T_c/T \sim$50) using a tunnel-diode resonator. In the cleanest samples $Δλ(T)$ is best described by the power law, $Δλ(T) \propto T^{n}$, with $n \sim 1$, consistent with line nodes. Substitutions of Ce with La, Nd and Yb lead to similar monotonic suppressions of $T_c$, however the effects on $Δλ(T)$ differ. While La and Nd doping results in an increase of the exponent to $n \sim 2$, as expected for a dirty nodal superconductor, Yb doping leads to $n > 3$, inconsiste…
We have probed the Landau levels of nodal quasi-particles by tunneling along a nodal direction of (110) oriented YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ thin films with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the $CuO_2$ planes, and parallel to the film's surface. In optimally doped films and at low temperature, finite energy nodal states are clearly observed in films thinner than the London penetration depth. Above a well defined temperature the order parameter reverts to a pure \emph{d}-wave symmetry.
Identifying the superconducting (SC) gap structure of the iron-based high-temperature superconductors (Fe-HTS's) remains a key issue for the understanding of superconductivity in these materials. In contrast to other unconventional superconductors, in the Fe-HTS's both $d$-wave and extended s-wave pairing symmetries are close in energy, with the latter believed to be generally favored over the former. Probing the proximity between these very different SC states and identifying experimental parameters that can tune them, are of central interest. Here we report high-pressure muon spin rotation e…
The superconducting ground state of the newly discovered superconductor Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure ($T_{\bf c}\sim$ 2.1(1) K) has been investigated using magnetization and muon-spin relaxation or rotation ($μ$SR), both zero-field (ZF) and transverse-field (TF), measurements. Our ZF $μ$SR measurements reveal the presence of spin fluctuations below 4 K and the ZF relaxation rate ($λ$) shows enhancement below $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 2.1 K, which might indicate that the superconducting state is unconventional. This observation suggests that the electrons are paired v…
We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission to measure the nodal non-equilibrium electronic states in various dopings of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. We find that the initial pump-induced transient signal of these ungapped states is strongly affected by the onset of the superconducting gap at $T_c$, superconducting pairing fluctuations at $T_p$, and the pseudogap at $T^*$. Moreover, $T_p$ marks a suggestive threshold in the fluence-dependent transient signal, with the appearance of a critical fluence below $T_p$ that corresponds to the energy required to break apart all Cooper pairs. These…
The penetration depth is calculated over the entire doping range of the cuprate phase diagram with emphasis on the underdoped regime. Pseudogap formation on approaching the Mott transition, for doping below a quantum critical point, is described within a model based on the resonating valence bond spin liquid which provides an ansatz for the coherent piece of the Green's function. Fermi surface reconstruction, which is an essential element of the model, has a strong effect on the superfluid density at T=0 producing a sharp drop in magnitude, but does not change the slope of the linear low tempe…
We report measurements of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ and the electronic specific heat $C_e(T)$ on high-quality single crystals of the filled-skutterudite superconductor PrPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ ($T_c\simeq$8K). Both quantities show a weak temperature dependence at $T\ll T_c$, following $Δλ\sim T^n$ ($n\simeq 3.2$) and $C_e/T\sim T^{2.8}$. Such temperature dependences deviate from both conventional s-wave type and nodal superconductivity. A detailed analysis indicates that the superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$, derived from the penetration depth, as well as the electronic specific heat can be cons…
Recent high-precision measurements employing different experimental techniques have unveiled an anomalous peak in the doping dependence of the London penetration depth which is accompanied by anomalies in the heat capacity in iron-pnictide superconductors at the optimal composition associated with the hidden antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. We argue that finite temperature effects can be a cause of observed features. Specifically we show that quantum critical magnetic fluctuations under superconducting dome can give rise to a nodal-like temperature dependence of both specific heat and…
Temperature-dependent London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, of a high quality optimally-doped $\text{YBa}_{2}\text{Cu}_{3}\text{O}_{7-δ}$ single crystal was measured using tunnel-diode resonator. Controlled artificial disorder was induced at low-temperature of 20~K by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation at accumulating large doses of $3.8\times10^{19}$ and $5.3\times10^{19}$ electrons per $\textrm{cm}^{2}$. The irradiation caused significant suppression of the superconductor's critical temperature, $T_{c}$, from 94.6 K to 90.0 K, and then to 78.7 K, respectively. The low-temperature behavior of $λ\left(T…
We report the electronic properties of superconductivity in the topological nodal-line semimetal PbTaSe$_2$. Angle-resolved photoemission measurements accompanied by band calculations confirmed the nodal-line band structure in the normal state of single crystalline PbTaSe$_2$. Resistivity, magnetic-susceptibility and specific heat measurements have also been performed on high-quality single crystals. We observed upward features and large anisotropy in upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) measured in-plane (H//\textbf{ab}) and out-plane (H//\textbf{c}), respectively. Especially, $H_{c2}$ measured in…
We investigate the doping dependent low energy, low temperature ($T$ = 5 K) properties of nodal quasiparticles in the d-wave superconductor Bi$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). By utilizing ultrahigh resolution laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we obtain precise band dispersions near $E_{F}$, mean free paths and scattering rates ($Γ$) of quasiparticles. For optimally and overdoped, we obtain very sharp quasiparticle peaks of 8 meV and 6 meV full-width at half-maximum, respectively, in accord with terahertz conductivity. For all doping levels, we find the energ…
CeCoIn5 is a heavy fermion superconductor with strong similarities to the high-Tc cuprates, including quasi-two-dimensionality, proximity to antiferromagnetism, and probable d-wave pairing arising from a non-Fermi-liquid normal state. Experiments allowing detailed comparisons of their electronic properties are of particular interest, but in most cases are difficult to realize, due to their very different transition temperatures. Here we use low temperature microwave spectroscopy to study the charge dynamics of the CeCoIn5 superconducting state. The similarities to cuprates, in particular to ul…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in the quasi-one-dimensional compound K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$, which consists of double-walled tubes of [(Cr$_3$As$_3$)$^{2-}]^\infty$ that run along the c axis, has attracted immediate attention as a potential system for studying superconductors with reduced dimensionality. Here we report clear experimental evidence for the unconventional nature of the superconducting order parameter in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$, by precisely measuring the temperature dependence of the change in the penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ using a tunnel diode oscillator. Linear behavior of $Δλ(T…
We have determined the superconducting and magnetic properties of four samples of Lu$_x$Zr$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ ($x=0.04$, $0.07$, $0.17$, and $0.8$) using muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and magnetometry measurements. We observed a strong magnetic signal in both the $μ$SR and magnetometry data in one sample ($x=0.07$), likely caused by the formation of static moments of size $\approx 1\,μ_{\rm B}$ due to a clustering effect of the Lu$^{3+}$ ions. In all other samples, we find only a small magnetic signal in the $μ$SR data thought to originate from boron nuclei in the B$_{12}$ cages. The superconductivi…
By employing a series of experimental techniques, we provide clear evidence that CaPtAs represents a rare example of a noncentrosymmetric superconductor which simultaneously exhibits nodes in the superconducting gap and broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in its superconducting state (below $T_c$ $\approx$ 1.5 K). Unlike in fully-gapped superconductors, the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ does not saturate at low temperatures, but instead it shows a $T^2$-dependence, characteristic of gap nodes. Both the superfluid density and the electronic specific heat are best described by a two-gap mode…
We report specific heat measurements on the Fe-based superconductor BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2, a material on which previous penetration depth, NMR, and thermal conductivity measurements have observed a high density of low-energy excitations, which have been interpreted in terms of order parameter nodes. Within the resolution of our measurements, the low temperature limiting C/T is found to be linear in field, i.e. we find no evidence for a Volovik effect associated with nodal quasiparticles in either the clean or dirty limit. We discuss possible reasons for this apparent contradiction.
