The isotope coefficient $β$ of the magnetic penetration depth in the superconducting state is studied at T=0 for a $d$-CDW and a nodal metal model. Disregarding superconductivity the Fermi surface of the first model possesses arcs whereas the second model has no arcs. We show that a large increase of $β$ in the pseudogap region is generically incompatible with Fermi arcs in the pseudogap state. Thus only the second model shows a large increase of $β$ with decreasing doping. The required electron-phonon coupling is small and compatible with first-principles calculations based on the local density approximation (LDA).
We report measurements of the oxygen isotope effect (OIE) on the in-plane penetration depth λ_{ab}(0) in underdoped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals. A highly sensitive magnetic torque sensor with a resolution of Δτ~ 10^{-12} Nm was used for the magnetic measurements on microcrystals with a mass of ~ 10 microg. The OIE on λ_{ab}^{-2}(0) is found to be -10(2)% for x = 0.080 and -8(1)% for x = 0.086. It arises mainly from the oxygen mass dependence of the in-plane effective mass m_{ab}*. The present results suggest that lattice vibrations are important for the occurrence of high temperature…
The oxygen-isotope (^16O/^18O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab} (0)$ in underdoped Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta} was studied by muon-spin rotation. A pronounced OIE on $λ_{ab}^{-2}(0)$ was observed with a relative isotope shift of $Δλ^{-2}_{ab}/λ^{-2}_{ab}$=-5(2)% for x =0.3 and -9(2)% for x=0.4. It arises mainly from the oxygen-mass dependence of the in-plane effective mass $m_{ab}^{\ast}$. The OIE exponents of T_{c} and of $λ_{ab}^{-2}(0)$ exhibit a relation that appears to be generic for cuprate superconductors.
We show that the unusual doping dependence of the isotope effects on transition temperature and zero temperature in - plane penetration depth naturally follows from the doping driven 3D-2D crossover, the 2D quantum superconductor to insulator transition (QSI) in the underdoped limit and the change of the relative doping concentration upon isotope substitution. Close to the QSI transition both, the isotope coefficient of transition temperature and penetration depth approach the coefficient of the relative dopant concentration, and its divergence sets the scale. These predictions are fully consi…
We address the origin of the recently discovered close correspondence between the charge ordering wave vectors and the momentum-space separation between the tips of the Fermi arcs seen in angle-resolved photoemission measurements in underdoped high temperature superconducting cuprates. We calculate the Fermi surface spectral weight for a charge density-wave model, assuming a Fermi surface, charge ordering wave vectors and short correlation lengths similar to those found experimentally. We show that the observation of wavevectors spanning the tips of remnant Fermi surface sections signal Fermi …
An outstanding question concerning the underdoped cuprate concerns the true nature of their Fermi surface which appears as a set of disconnected arcs. Theoretical models have proposed two distinct possibilities: (1) each arc is the observable part of a partially-hidden closed pocket, and (2) each arc is open, truncated at its apparent ends. We show that measurements of the variation of the interlayer resistance with the direction of a magnetic field parallel to the layers can qualitatively distinguish closed pockets from open arcs. This is possible because the field can be oriented such that a…
We report site-selective oxygen isotope ($^{16}$O/$^{18}$O) effect (OIE) measurements on the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab} $ in underdoped Y$_{0.6}$Pr$_{0.4}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$, using the muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) technique. A pronounced OIE on the transition temperature $T_c$ as well as on $λ_{ab}^{-2}(0)$ was observed, which mainly arises from the oxygen sites within the superconducting CuO$_2$ planes (100 % within error bar). The values of the corresponding relative isotope shifts were found to be $T_c/T_c= -3.7(4)%$ and $Δλ^{-2}_{ab}(0)/λ^{-2}_{ab}(0)= -6.2(1.0)%$. Our results imp…
We reanalyze the data on the in-plane far infrared conductivity of underdoped orthoII YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.50}$ (YBCO$_{6.50}$) in terms of a model in which a pseudogap opens on part of the Fermi surface with the remaining ungaped piece proportional to the temperature. The motivation for our model comes from recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data in underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212), which have revealed the existence of arcs on the Fermi surface. We find the optical data to be consistent with arc formation. In addition we find some evidence that the electronic…
We have investigated the doping dependence of the penetration depth vs. temperature in electron doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4-δ}$ using a model which assumes the uniform coexistence of (mean-field) antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. Despite the presence of a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing gap in the underlying spectrum, we find nodeless behavior of the low-$T$ penetration depth in underdoped case, in accord with experimental results. As doping increases, a linear-in-$T$ behavior of the penetration depth, characteristic of d-wave pairing, emerges as the lower magnetic band crosses the Fermi level…
A recent microscopic model of the pseudogap state, based on the resonating valence bond (RVB) spin liquid, has provided a simple ansatz for the electronic self energy in which a gap forms on the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone as the limit of a Mott insulator is approached in the underdoped regime. Here, the ansatz is employed to calculate the electronic specific heat when a superconducting gap is also included. We find qualitative agreement with all experimental observations in the underdoped regime of the cuprates. We explore the relationship of the theory to two other purely phenomenologic…
High resolution measurements of superfluid density and broadband quasiparticle conductivity have been used to probe the low energy excitation spectrum of nodal quasiparticles in underdoped YBCO. Penetration depth is measured to temperatures as low as 0.05 K. Microwave conductivity is measured from 0.1 to 20 GHz and is a direct probe of zero-energy quasiparticles. The data are compared with predictions for a number of theoretical scenarios that compete with or otherwise modify pure d-wave superconductivity, in particular commensurate and incommensurate spin and charge density waves; d + i s and…
We formulate a model describing the doping ($x$) and temperature ($T$) dependence of the $ab$-plane and c-axis penetration depth of a cuprate superconductor. The model incorporates the suppression of the superfluid density with underdoping as the system approaches the Mott-Hubbard insulating state by augmenting a d-wave BCS model with a phenomenological charge renormalization factor that is vanishingly small for states away from the nodes of the d-wave pair potential but close to unity in the vicinity of the nodes. The c-axis penetration depth is captured within a model of incoherent electron …
We studied interactions between the coherent excitations on disconnected arcs along a bare Fermi surface (the so-called Fermi arcs (FAs)) seen by angle-resolved photo emission spectroscopy (ARPES) in several underdoped (UD) cuprates and incommensurate charge density wave (IC CDW) ordering at lowering of the temperature.
We investigate the effects of the dynamic bosonic fluctuations on the Fermi surface reconstruction in two dimensions as a model for the underdoped cuprates. At energies larger than the boson energy $ω_b$, the dynamic nature of the fluctuations is not important and the quasi-particle dispersion exhibits the shadow feature like that induced by a static long range order. At lower energies, however, the shadow feature is pushed away by the finite $ω_b$. The detailed low energy features are determined by the bare dispersion and the coupling of quasi-particles to the dynamic fluctuations. We present…
Angle resolved photoemission experiments by Kanigel, et al (cond-mat/0605499) [Nature Physics 2, 447 (2006)] have made a remarkable observation that low energy electronic excitations in the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors exist on open ``Fermi arcs'' instead of a closed Fermi surface. These arcs shrink upon cooling, with the arc length appearing to extrapolate to nodal points at zero temperature. We show that this striking non-Fermi liquid behavior could result from the underdoped normal state above Tc lying in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition between a d-wave supe…
We report and analyze in-plane penetration depth measurements in YBa2Cu3O7-x taken close to the critical temperature Tc. In underdoped YBa2Cu3O6:59 we find consistent evidence for charged critical behavior. Noting that the effective dimensionless charge scales as 1/sqrt(Tc), this new critical behavior should be generically observable in suitably underdoped cuprates.
The one-particle spectral function of a state formed by superconducting (SC) clusters is studied via Monte Carlo techniques. The clusters have similar SC amplitudes but randomly distributed phases. This state is stabilized by the competition with anti-ferromagnetism, after quenched disorder is introduced. Fermi arcs between the critical temperature Tc and the cluster formation temperature scale T* are observed, similarly as in the pseudo-gap state of the cuprates. The arcs originate at metallic regions in between the neighboring clusters that present large SC phase differences.
We show how recent angle resolved photoemission measurements addressing the Fermi arcs in the cuprates reveal a very natural phenomenological description of the complex superfluid phase. Importantly, this phenomenology is consistent with a previously presented microscopic theory. By distinguishing the order parameter and the excitation gap, we are able to demonstrate how the collapse of the arcs below $T_c$ into well defined nodes is associated with the \emph{smooth} emergence of superconducting coherence. Comparison of this theory with experiment shows good semi-quantitative agreement.
The penetration depth is calculated over the entire doping range of the cuprate phase diagram with emphasis on the underdoped regime. Pseudogap formation on approaching the Mott transition, for doping below a quantum critical point, is described within a model based on the resonating valence bond spin liquid which provides an ansatz for the coherent piece of the Green's function. Fermi surface reconstruction, which is an essential element of the model, has a strong effect on the superfluid density at T=0 producing a sharp drop in magnitude, but does not change the slope of the linear low tempe…
The Fermi-liquid-like (FL) resistivity recently observed in clean HgBa2CuO4 below the pseudogap temperature was related to carriers at the nodal points on the Fermi surface [4]. We show that this necessitates important implications for the electronic spectrum of underdoped (UD) cuprates in whole. Photoemission experiments picture the spectrum as of metallic arcs separated from each other by regions with large energy gaps. We solved the kinetic equation in such model rigorously. The Fermi arcs carriers contribute to FL resistivity, if scattering between the opposite nodal points admits the Umkl…
We report on muon spin rotation measurements of the internal magnetic field distribution n(B) in the vortex solid phase of YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) single crystals, from which we have simultaneously determined the hole doping dependences of the in-plane Ginzburg-Landau (GL) length scales in the underdoped regime. We find that Tc has a sublinear dependence on 1/lambda_{ab}^2, where lambda_{ab} is the in-plane magnetic penetration depth in the extrapolated limits T -> 0 and H -> 0. The power coefficient of the sublinear dependence is close to that determined in severely underdoped YBCO thin films, indic…
We report measurements of the ab-plane superfluid density Ns (magnetic penetration depth, λ) of severely underdoped films of YBa2Cu3O6+x, with Tc's from 6 to 50 K. Tc is not proportional to Ns(0); instead, we find Tc ~ Ns^{1/2.3 +/- 0.4}. At the lowest dopings, Tc is as much as 5 times larger than the upper limit set by the KTB transition temperature of individual CuO2 bilayers.
Angle resolved photoemission data in the pseudogap phase of underdoped cuprates have revealed the presence of a truncated Fermi surface consisting of Fermi arcs. We compare a number of proposed models for the arcs, and find that the one that best models the data is a d-wave energy gap with a lifetime broadening whose temperature dependence is suggestive of fluctuating pairs.
We measure the penetration depth of optimally doped and underdoped La2-xCexCuO4 in the millimeter frequency domain (4 - 7 cm-1) and for temperatures 2 K < T < 300 K. The penetration depth as function of temperature reveals significant changes on electron doping. It shows quadratic temperature dependence in underdoped samples, but increases almost exponentially at optimal doping. Significant changes in the gap anisotropy (or even in the gap symmetry) may account for this transition.
Zuev et al. reported measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth of supposedly underdoped films of YBa2Cu3O6+x, with Tc from 6 to 50 K. They argue that their data is inconsistent with a linear relationship between Tc and the inversw of the T=0 in-plane penetration depth squared, as expected for a two dimensional quantum superconductor to insulator (2D-QSI) transition where Tc vanishes and the anisotropy diverges. It is shown that the data of Zuev et al. do not fall onto the regime where the linear relationship applies, because the observed reduction of Tc is not associated with an …
ARPES measurements on underdoped cuprates above the superconducting transition temperature exhibit the unique phenomenon of Fermi arcs, gapless arcs of Fermi surface around the nodal points of the superconducting gap, which terminate before reaching the antinodes. We show that this phenomenon is easily explained (including its temperature dependence and observed hole-electron asymmetry) as the natural consequence of a time-fluctuating d-wave gap.
The effect of thermal phase fluctuations (TPF's) on the ab-plane penetration depth, lambda(T), of thin YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) films is found to be much smaller than expected from the paradigm of cuprates as weakly-coupled 2D superconducting layers. A 2D vortex-pair-unbinding transition is observed, but the effective thickness for fluctuations is the film thickness, not a CuO bilayer thickness. In a strongly underdoped YBCO film, Tc= 34 K, TPF's suppress Tc by only about 3 K. They cannot be a significant factor in the suppression of Tc and emergence of the pseudogap with underdoping.
Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in zero temperature limit, we find that the nodal slope $v_Δ$ of the superconducting gap has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ or value $Δ_p$. Meanwhile the maximum quasiparticle gap derived from $v_Δ$ is quite close to $T^*$. Both indicate a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is also found that $T_c \approx βv_Δγ_n(0)$, where $γ_n(0)$ is the extracted zero temperature value of the normal state specific heat coefficient which is proport…
It has recently been proposed that the Fermi surface of underdoped high Tc copper oxide materials within the charge-ordered regime consists of a diamond-shaped electron pocket constructed from arcs connected at vertices. We show here that on modeling the in-plane magnetotransport of such a Fermi surface using the Shockley-Chambers tube integral approach and a uniform scattering time, several key features of the normal state in-plane transport of the underdoped copper oxide systems can be understood. These include the sign reversal in the Hall coefficient, the positive magnetoresistance and mag…
A variety of experiments suggest that in the cuprates, the low-energy superconducting quasiparticles undergo forward scattering from extended impurity potentials. We argue that when such potentials dominate the scattering, the penetration depth may be computed in a simple zero-angle scattering approximation (ZSA), in which the vertex corrections to the Meissner effect may be summed exactly. We find a remarkably simple relationship between the normal fluid density and the quasiparticle density of states of the disordered system which holds for every realization of the disorder. We expect this r…
The London penetration depth $λ(T)$ has been measured in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ using the tunnel diode resonator technique. The measured doping levels of $x=$~0.038, 0.047, 0.058, 0.074 and 0.10 range from underdoped to overdoped concentrations. The measurements have shown that the density of carriers participating in superconductivity decreases sharply in the underdoped regime, but the penetration depth as a function of temperature exhibits a robust power law, $Δλ(T)\sim T^{n}$, for all measured dopings, with $n$ between 2 and 2.5. We discuss the implications …
We explore the relationship between the critical temperature, T_c, the mobile areal carrier density, n_2D, and the zero temperature magnetic in-plane penetration depth, lambda_ab(0), in very thin underdoped NdBa2Cu3O{7-delta} films near the superconductor to insulator transition using the electric field effect technique. We observe that T_c depends linearly on both, n_2D and lambda_ab(0), the signature of a quantum superconductor to insulator (QSI) transition in two dimensions with znu-bar where z is the dynamic and nu-bar the critical exponent of the in-plane correlation length.
Vortex thermal fluctuations in heavily underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Tc=69.4 K) are studied using Josephson plasma resonance (JPR). From the data in zero magnetic field, we obtain the penetration depth along the c-axis, lambda_{L,c}(0) = 229 micrometers and the anisotropy ratio gamma(0) = 600. The low plasma frequency allows us to study phase correlations over the whole vortex solid (Bragg-glass) state. The JPR results yield a wandering length r_{w} of vortex pancakes. The temperature dependence of r_{w} as well as its increase with applied dc magnetic field can only be explained by the renormal…
We report magnetization measurements under high hydrostatic pressure in the newly discovered pyrochlore superconductor RbOs_2O_6 (T_c\simeq6.3K at p=0). A pronounced and {\it positive} pressure effect (PE) on T_c with dT_c/dp =0.090(1)K/kbar was observed, whereas no PE on the magnetic penetration depth λwas detected. The relative pressure shift of T_c [ dlnT_c/dp \simeq 1.5%/kbar] is comparable with the highest values obtained for highly underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors. Our results suggest that RbOs_2O_6 is an adiabatic BCS-type superconductor.
Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in zero temperature limit, we determined the nodal slope $v_Δ$ of the quasiparticle gap. It is found that $v_Δ$ has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ or value $Δ_p$. Meanwhile the virtual maximum gap at ($π,0$) derived from $v_Δ$ is found to follow the simple relation $Δ_q=0.46k_BT^*$ upon changing the doping concentration. This strongly suggests a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is further found that the superconducting transition t…
The evidence of edge-gaps around the M-points in the metallic state of underdoped cuprates has triggered a very active debate on their origin. We first consider the possibility that this spectroscopic feature results from a quasi-static charge ordering taking place in the underdoped regime. It comes out that to explain the coexistence of gaps and arcs on the Fermi surface the charge modulation should be in an eggbox form. In the lack of evidences for that, we then investigate the local pairing induced by charge-stripe fluctuations. A proper description of the strong anisotropy of both the inte…
In underdoped cuprates, only a portion of the Fermi surface survives as Fermi arcs due to pseudogap opening. In hole-doped La$_{2}$CuO$_4$, we have deduced the "coherence temperature" $T_{coh}$ of quasi-particles on the Fermi arc above which the broadened leading edge position in angle-integrated photoemission spectra is shifted away from the Fermi level and the quasi-particle concept starts to lose its meaning. $T_{coh}$ is found to rapidly increase with hole doping, an opposite behavior to the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. The superconducting dome is thus located below both $T^*$ and $T_{coh}…
The investigation of the penetration depth λ_{ab}(T,p) in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x} crystals allowed to observe the following features of the superfluid density n_s(T,p)\propto λ_{ab}^{-2}(T,p) as a function of temperature T<Tc/2 and carrier concentration 0.078\le p\le 0.16 in CuO_2 planes: (i) n_s(0,p) depends linearly on p, (ii) the derivative |dn_s(T,p)/dT|_{T\to 0} depends on p slightly in the optimally and moderately doped regions (0.10<p\le 0.16); however, it rapidly increases with p further lowering and (iii) the latter finding is accompanied by the linear low-temperature dependence [-Δn_s(T)]\p…
The pressure dependence of the magnetic penetration depth in polycrystalline samples of YBa2Cu3Ox with different oxygen concentrations x = 6.45, 6.6, 6.8, and 6.98 was studied by muon spin rotation (muSR). The pressure dependence of the superfluid density (p_s) as a function of the superconducting transition temperature Tc is found to deviate from the usual Uemura line. The ratio (dTc/dP)/(dp_s/dP) is factor of 2 smaller than that of the Uemura relation. In underdoped samples, the zero temperature superconducting gap and the BCS ratio both increase with increasing external hydrostatic pressure…
We analyze magnetic penetration depth data of the recently discovered superconducting pyrochlore oxide RbOs2O6. Our results strongly suggest that in RbOs2O6 charged critical fuctuations dominate the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth near Tc. This is in contrast to the mean-field behavior observed in conventional superconductors and the uncharged critical behavior found in nearly optimally doped cuprate superconductors. However, this finding agrees with the theoretical predictions for charged criticality and the charged criticality observed in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.59.
We calculate the change in susceptibility resulting from a thin sheet with reduced penetration depth embedded perpendicular to the surface of an isotropic superconductor, in a geometry applicable to scanning Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) microscopy, by numerically solving Maxwell's and London's equations using the finite element method. The predicted stripes in susceptibility agree well in shape with the observations of Kalisky et al. of enhanced susceptibility above twin planes in the underdoped pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (Ba-122). By comparing the predicte…
The discovery of quantum oscillations in the normal-state electrical resistivity of YBa2Cu3O6.5 provides the first evidence for the existence of Fermi surface (FS) pockets in an underdoped cuprate. However, the pockets' electron vs. hole character, and the very interpretation in terms of closed FS contours, are the subject of considerable debate. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), with its ability to probe electronic dispersion as well as the FS, is ideally suited to address this issue. Unfortunately, the ARPES study of YBa2C3O7-d (YBCO) has been hampered by the technique's sur…
We address recent experiments shedding light on the energy spectrum of under- and optimally doped cuprates at temperatures above superconducting transition. Angle resolved photoemission reveals coherent excitation only near nodal points on parts of the "bare" Fermi surface known as the Fermi arcs. The question debated in the literature is whether the small normal pocket, seen via quantum oscillations exists at higher temperatures or forms below a charge order transition in strong magnetic fields. Assuming the former case as possibility, expressions derived for the resistivity and the Hall coef…
In-plane microwave penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ and quaiparticle conductivity at 28 GHz are measured in underdoped single crystals of the Fe-based superconductor PrFeAsO$_{1-y}$ ($T_c\approx 35$ K) by using a sensitive superconducting cavity resonator. $λ_{ab}(T)$ shows flat dependence at low temperatures, which is incompatible with the presence of nodes in the superconducting gap $Δ({\bf k})$. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density demonstrates that the gap is non-zero ($Δ/k_BT_c\gtrsim 1.6$) all over the Fermi surface. The microwave conductivity below $T_c$ exhibits an enhancemen…
We study Cooper-pair phase fluctuations in cuprate superconductors for a spin fluctuation pairing interaction. Using an electronic theory we calculate in particular for the underdoped cuprate superconductors the superfluid density $n_s(T)$, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c(x) \propto n_s$ below which phase coherent Cooper-pairs occur, and $T_c^{*}(x)$ where the phase incoherent Cooper-pairs disappear. Also we present results for the penetration depth $λ(x,T)$ and for the weak pseudogap temperature $T^{*}(x)$ at which a gap structure occurs in the spectral density. A Meißner effe…
It is shown that the empirical relations between transition temperature, normal state conductivity linearly extrapolated to the value at the transition temperature, zero temperature penetration depths, etc., as observed in a rich variety of cuprate superconductors, are remarkably consistent with the universal critical properties of anisotropic systems which fall into the 3D-XY universality class and undergo a crossover to a quantum critical point in 2D. The variety includes n- and p-type cuprates, comprises the underdoped and overdoped regimes and the consistency extends up to six decades in t…
We present a variational approach based on the string picture to analyze the internal structure and dispersion of spin polarons with different symmetries in an antiferromagnet. We then use this to discuss the properties of underdoped cuprate superconductor within the `doped insulator' picture. The theory explains the remnant Fermi surface for the undoped compunds, as well as hole pockets, Fermi arcs, high energy pseudogap and the the mid-infrared band in doped materials. Destructive interference between the phases of a photohole near $Γ$ and the internal phases of the Zhang Rice singlet combin…
Using differential magneto-optical imaging, we address the question of mesoscopic inhomogeneity in underdoped Bi-2212 single crystals. Among other features, it is shown that an anomalous temperature dependence of the penetration field and of the first order transition (FOT) field of the vortex lattice in such crystals can be understood as arising from inhomogeneity. The effect of chemical inhomogeneity and pinning on flux penetration and the FOT is discussed.
Recent experiments have revealed incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) in the pseudogap regime in underdoped cuprates, e.g. YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. However, its relationship with the pseudogap is still controversial. In this work, we take a phenomenological synthesis of the doped resonating valence bond (RVB) state and the CDW order. Starting from the Yang-Rice-Zhang Green's function ansatz for the doped RVB state [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 73}, 174501 (2006)], in which the Fermi surface is partially truncated into four nodal hole-like Fermi pockets by the antinodal RVB gap,…
The oxygen-isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane magnetic penetration depth λ_{ab}(0) in optimally-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} and La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_4, and in slightly underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 and Y_{0.8}Pr_{0.2}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} was studied by means of muon-spin rotation. A substantial OIE on λ_{ab}(0) with an OIE exponent β_O=-d\lnλ_{ab}(0)/d\ln M_O\approx - 0.2 (M_O is the mass of the oxygen isotope), and a small OIE on the transition temperature T_c with an OIE exponent α_O=-d\ln T_{c}/d \ln M_O\simeq0.02 to 0.1 were observed. The observation of a substantial isotope effect on λ…
Recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements found that the spin susceptibility of detwinned and highly ordered ortho-II YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.5} exhibits, in both the normal and superconducting states, one-dimensional incommensurate modulations at low energies which were interpreted as a signature of dynamic stripes. We propose an alternative model based on quasiparticle transitions between the arcs of a truncated Fermi surface. Such transitions are resonantly enhanced by scattering to the triplet spin resonance. We show that the anisotropy in the experimental spin response is consistent with thi…
Measurements of London penetration depth are a sensitive tool to study multi-band superconductivity and it has provided several important insights to the behavior of Fe-based superconductors. We first briefly review the "experimentalist - friendly" self-consistent Eilenberger model that relates the measurable superfluid density and structure of superconducting gaps. Then we focus on the \BaFe -derived materials, for which the results are consistent with 1) two distinct superconducting gaps; 2) development of strong in-plane gap anisotropy with the departure from the optimal doping; 3) appearan…
The underdoped cuprates have a number of interesting and unusual properties that often seem hard to reconcile with one another. In this paper we show how many of these diverse phenomena can be synthesized into a single coherent theoretical picture. Specifically we present a description where a pseudogap and gapless Fermi arcs exist in the normal state above the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$), but give way to the observed quantum oscillations and other phenomena at low temperature when the superconductivity is suppressed by a magnetic field. We show the consistency between these…
The Fermi surface topologies of underdoped samples the high-Tc superconductor Bi2212 have been measured with angle resolved photoemission. By examining thermally excited states above the Fermi level, we show that the Fermi surfaces in the pseudogap phase of underdoped samples are actually composed of fully enclosed hole pockets. The spectral weight of these pockets is vanishingly small at the anti-ferromagnetic zone boundary, which creates the illusion of Fermi "arcs" in standard photoemission measurements. The area of the pockets as measured in this study is consistent with the doping level, …
We report on measurements of the low temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth lambda_ab in several single crystals of La_2-xSr_xCuO_4, Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 and YBa_2Cu_3O_6+x at various doping levels ranging from the under- to the overdoped regimes by using a novel single-coil technique achieving 10 pm resolution. We have found a linear dependence of lambda_ab in all samples with a rapidly increasing slope dlambda_ab/dT as doping decreases. Our analysis of the data indicates that a superconducting gap with d-wave symmetry is sufficient to quantitatively account for the above slope…
By measuring the low temperature specific heat, the low energy quasi-particle excitation has been derived and analyzed in systematically doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals. The Volovik's relation predicted for a d-wave superconductor has been well demonstrated in wide doping regime, showing a robust evidence for the d-wave pairing symmetry. Furthermore the nodal gap slope $v_Δ$ of the superconducting gap is derived and is found to follow the same doping dependence of the pseudogap obtained from ARPES and tunnelling measurement. This strongly suggests a close relationship between…
Tracking unconventional superconductivity in the presence of strongly correlated Fermi arcs
Beijing National Laboratory for Condensed Matter Physics and Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences(中国科学院物理研究所);Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Materials Research Institute, The Pennsylvania State University(宾夕法尼亚州立大学材料科学与工程系及材料研究所)
We perform a detailed analysis of the irreversible magnetization data of Salem-Sugui et al. and Babis et al. of underdoped and optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7+x single crystals. Near the zero field transition temperature we observe extended consistency with the properties of the 3D-xy universality class, even though the attained critical regime is limited by an inhomogeneity induced finite size effect. Nevertheless, as Tc falls from 93.5 to 41.5 K the critical amplitude of the in-plane correlation length gsiab0, the anisotropy amma=gsiab0/gsic0 and the critical amplitude of the in-plane penetration …
The Fermi surface is a central concept in the theory of metals. Even though the optimally doped high temperature superconductors exhibit an anomalous normal state, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has revealed a large Fermi surface despite the absence of well-defined quasiparticles and the necessity of working at finite temperatures. However, the even more unusual behavior in the underdoped high temperature superconductors, which show a pseudogap above Tc, requires us to carefully re-examine this concept. Here, we present the first results on how the Fermi surface is destroyed…
