A recent microscopic model of the pseudogap state, based on the resonating valence bond (RVB) spin liquid, has provided a simple ansatz for the electronic self energy in which a gap forms on the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone as the limit of a Mott insulator is approached in the underdoped regime. Here, the ansatz is employed to calculate the electronic specific heat when a superconducting gap is also included. We find qualitative agreement with all experimental observations in the underdoped regime of the cuprates. We explore the relationship of the theory to two other purely phenomenological approaches, the nodal liquid and the Fermi arc model, and provide justification for their use on experimental data in light of this microscopic RVB theory.
We have been able to resolve two long-standing issues that are central to the theory of high Tc superconductivity: (1) How is the physics of the doped region connected to that of the Mott insulator? (2) What is the origin of the two-dimensionality of the normal state? Specifically, based on the t-J model, we derive a renormalized Hamiltonian to describe the properties of underdoped cuprates. The theory is constrained to agree with the behavior at half filling, which is well described by the bosonic RVB state of Arovas and Auerbach. Moving holes are assumed to destroy long-range magnetic order,…
An ansatz is proposed for the coherent part of the single particle Green's function in a doped resonant valence bond (RVB) state by, analogy with the form derived by Konik and coworkers for a doped spin liquid formed by an array of 2-leg Hubbard ladders near half-filling. The parameters of the RVB state are taken from the renormalized mean field theory of Zhang and coworkers for underdoped cuprates. The ansatz shows good agreement with recent angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) on underdoped cuprates and resolves an apparent disagreement with the Luttinger Sum Rule. The transition in the norm…
Recent experiments have revealed incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) in the pseudogap regime in underdoped cuprates, e.g. YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. However, its relationship with the pseudogap is still controversial. In this work, we take a phenomenological synthesis of the doped resonating valence bond (RVB) state and the CDW order. Starting from the Yang-Rice-Zhang Green's function ansatz for the doped RVB state [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 73}, 174501 (2006)], in which the Fermi surface is partially truncated into four nodal hole-like Fermi pockets by the antinodal RVB gap,…
We address the origin of the recently discovered close correspondence between the charge ordering wave vectors and the momentum-space separation between the tips of the Fermi arcs seen in angle-resolved photoemission measurements in underdoped high temperature superconducting cuprates. We calculate the Fermi surface spectral weight for a charge density-wave model, assuming a Fermi surface, charge ordering wave vectors and short correlation lengths similar to those found experimentally. We show that the observation of wavevectors spanning the tips of remnant Fermi surface sections signal Fermi …
An outstanding question concerning the underdoped cuprate concerns the true nature of their Fermi surface which appears as a set of disconnected arcs. Theoretical models have proposed two distinct possibilities: (1) each arc is the observable part of a partially-hidden closed pocket, and (2) each arc is open, truncated at its apparent ends. We show that measurements of the variation of the interlayer resistance with the direction of a magnetic field parallel to the layers can qualitatively distinguish closed pockets from open arcs. This is possible because the field can be oriented such that a…
The isotope coefficient $β$ of the magnetic penetration depth in the superconducting state is studied at T=0 for a $d$-CDW and a nodal metal model. Disregarding superconductivity the Fermi surface of the first model possesses arcs whereas the second model has no arcs. We show that a large increase of $β$ in the pseudogap region is generically incompatible with Fermi arcs in the pseudogap state. Thus only the second model shows a large increase of $β$ with decreasing doping. The required electron-phonon coupling is small and compatible with first-principles calculations based on the local densi…
We reanalyze the data on the in-plane far infrared conductivity of underdoped orthoII YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.50}$ (YBCO$_{6.50}$) in terms of a model in which a pseudogap opens on part of the Fermi surface with the remaining ungaped piece proportional to the temperature. The motivation for our model comes from recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data in underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212), which have revealed the existence of arcs on the Fermi surface. We find the optical data to be consistent with arc formation. In addition we find some evidence that the electronic…
A wave function is proposed for the "$4\times 4$" inhomogeneous structures observed on cuprate superconductors. It is based on the Gutzwiller-RVB technique proposed in recent papers, and consists of a Wigner solid of hole pairs embedded in a sea of d-wave spin singlet pairs. Arguments are given that the nodal quasiparticles may remain unscattered and even superconducting on such a structure.
We studied interactions between the coherent excitations on disconnected arcs along a bare Fermi surface (the so-called Fermi arcs (FAs)) seen by angle-resolved photo emission spectroscopy (ARPES) in several underdoped (UD) cuprates and incommensurate charge density wave (IC CDW) ordering at lowering of the temperature.
We investigate the effects of the dynamic bosonic fluctuations on the Fermi surface reconstruction in two dimensions as a model for the underdoped cuprates. At energies larger than the boson energy $ω_b$, the dynamic nature of the fluctuations is not important and the quasi-particle dispersion exhibits the shadow feature like that induced by a static long range order. At lower energies, however, the shadow feature is pushed away by the finite $ω_b$. The detailed low energy features are determined by the bare dispersion and the coupling of quasi-particles to the dynamic fluctuations. We present…
Angle resolved photoemission experiments by Kanigel, et al (cond-mat/0605499) [Nature Physics 2, 447 (2006)] have made a remarkable observation that low energy electronic excitations in the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors exist on open ``Fermi arcs'' instead of a closed Fermi surface. These arcs shrink upon cooling, with the arc length appearing to extrapolate to nodal points at zero temperature. We show that this striking non-Fermi liquid behavior could result from the underdoped normal state above Tc lying in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition between a d-wave supe…
The one-particle spectral function of a state formed by superconducting (SC) clusters is studied via Monte Carlo techniques. The clusters have similar SC amplitudes but randomly distributed phases. This state is stabilized by the competition with anti-ferromagnetism, after quenched disorder is introduced. Fermi arcs between the critical temperature Tc and the cluster formation temperature scale T* are observed, similarly as in the pseudo-gap state of the cuprates. The arcs originate at metallic regions in between the neighboring clusters that present large SC phase differences.
We show how recent angle resolved photoemission measurements addressing the Fermi arcs in the cuprates reveal a very natural phenomenological description of the complex superfluid phase. Importantly, this phenomenology is consistent with a previously presented microscopic theory. By distinguishing the order parameter and the excitation gap, we are able to demonstrate how the collapse of the arcs below $T_c$ into well defined nodes is associated with the \emph{smooth} emergence of superconducting coherence. Comparison of this theory with experiment shows good semi-quantitative agreement.
The Fermi-liquid-like (FL) resistivity recently observed in clean HgBa2CuO4 below the pseudogap temperature was related to carriers at the nodal points on the Fermi surface [4]. We show that this necessitates important implications for the electronic spectrum of underdoped (UD) cuprates in whole. Photoemission experiments picture the spectrum as of metallic arcs separated from each other by regions with large energy gaps. We solved the kinetic equation in such model rigorously. The Fermi arcs carriers contribute to FL resistivity, if scattering between the opposite nodal points admits the Umkl…
Angle resolved photoemission data in the pseudogap phase of underdoped cuprates have revealed the presence of a truncated Fermi surface consisting of Fermi arcs. We compare a number of proposed models for the arcs, and find that the one that best models the data is a d-wave energy gap with a lifetime broadening whose temperature dependence is suggestive of fluctuating pairs.
ARPES measurements on underdoped cuprates above the superconducting transition temperature exhibit the unique phenomenon of Fermi arcs, gapless arcs of Fermi surface around the nodal points of the superconducting gap, which terminate before reaching the antinodes. We show that this phenomenon is easily explained (including its temperature dependence and observed hole-electron asymmetry) as the natural consequence of a time-fluctuating d-wave gap.
It has recently been proposed that the Fermi surface of underdoped high Tc copper oxide materials within the charge-ordered regime consists of a diamond-shaped electron pocket constructed from arcs connected at vertices. We show here that on modeling the in-plane magnetotransport of such a Fermi surface using the Shockley-Chambers tube integral approach and a uniform scattering time, several key features of the normal state in-plane transport of the underdoped copper oxide systems can be understood. These include the sign reversal in the Hall coefficient, the positive magnetoresistance and mag…
Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in zero temperature limit, we find that the nodal slope $v_Δ$ of the superconducting gap has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ or value $Δ_p$. Meanwhile the maximum quasiparticle gap derived from $v_Δ$ is quite close to $T^*$. Both indicate a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is also found that $T_c \approx βv_Δγ_n(0)$, where $γ_n(0)$ is the extracted zero temperature value of the normal state specific heat coefficient which is proport…
The evidence of edge-gaps around the M-points in the metallic state of underdoped cuprates has triggered a very active debate on their origin. We first consider the possibility that this spectroscopic feature results from a quasi-static charge ordering taking place in the underdoped regime. It comes out that to explain the coexistence of gaps and arcs on the Fermi surface the charge modulation should be in an eggbox form. In the lack of evidences for that, we then investigate the local pairing induced by charge-stripe fluctuations. A proper description of the strong anisotropy of both the inte…
Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in zero temperature limit, we determined the nodal slope $v_Δ$ of the quasiparticle gap. It is found that $v_Δ$ has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ or value $Δ_p$. Meanwhile the virtual maximum gap at ($π,0$) derived from $v_Δ$ is found to follow the simple relation $Δ_q=0.46k_BT^*$ upon changing the doping concentration. This strongly suggests a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is further found that the superconducting transition t…
In underdoped cuprates, only a portion of the Fermi surface survives as Fermi arcs due to pseudogap opening. In hole-doped La$_{2}$CuO$_4$, we have deduced the "coherence temperature" $T_{coh}$ of quasi-particles on the Fermi arc above which the broadened leading edge position in angle-integrated photoemission spectra is shifted away from the Fermi level and the quasi-particle concept starts to lose its meaning. $T_{coh}$ is found to rapidly increase with hole doping, an opposite behavior to the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. The superconducting dome is thus located below both $T^*$ and $T_{coh}…
The discovery of quantum oscillations in the normal-state electrical resistivity of YBa2Cu3O6.5 provides the first evidence for the existence of Fermi surface (FS) pockets in an underdoped cuprate. However, the pockets' electron vs. hole character, and the very interpretation in terms of closed FS contours, are the subject of considerable debate. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), with its ability to probe electronic dispersion as well as the FS, is ideally suited to address this issue. Unfortunately, the ARPES study of YBa2C3O7-d (YBCO) has been hampered by the technique's sur…
We address recent experiments shedding light on the energy spectrum of under- and optimally doped cuprates at temperatures above superconducting transition. Angle resolved photoemission reveals coherent excitation only near nodal points on parts of the "bare" Fermi surface known as the Fermi arcs. The question debated in the literature is whether the small normal pocket, seen via quantum oscillations exists at higher temperatures or forms below a charge order transition in strong magnetic fields. Assuming the former case as possibility, expressions derived for the resistivity and the Hall coef…
We present a variational approach based on the string picture to analyze the internal structure and dispersion of spin polarons with different symmetries in an antiferromagnet. We then use this to discuss the properties of underdoped cuprate superconductor within the `doped insulator' picture. The theory explains the remnant Fermi surface for the undoped compunds, as well as hole pockets, Fermi arcs, high energy pseudogap and the the mid-infrared band in doped materials. Destructive interference between the phases of a photohole near $Γ$ and the internal phases of the Zhang Rice singlet combin…
Recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements found that the spin susceptibility of detwinned and highly ordered ortho-II YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.5} exhibits, in both the normal and superconducting states, one-dimensional incommensurate modulations at low energies which were interpreted as a signature of dynamic stripes. We propose an alternative model based on quasiparticle transitions between the arcs of a truncated Fermi surface. Such transitions are resonantly enhanced by scattering to the triplet spin resonance. We show that the anisotropy in the experimental spin response is consistent with thi…
The underdoped cuprates have a number of interesting and unusual properties that often seem hard to reconcile with one another. In this paper we show how many of these diverse phenomena can be synthesized into a single coherent theoretical picture. Specifically we present a description where a pseudogap and gapless Fermi arcs exist in the normal state above the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$), but give way to the observed quantum oscillations and other phenomena at low temperature when the superconductivity is suppressed by a magnetic field. We show the consistency between these…
The Fermi surface topologies of underdoped samples the high-Tc superconductor Bi2212 have been measured with angle resolved photoemission. By examining thermally excited states above the Fermi level, we show that the Fermi surfaces in the pseudogap phase of underdoped samples are actually composed of fully enclosed hole pockets. The spectral weight of these pockets is vanishingly small at the anti-ferromagnetic zone boundary, which creates the illusion of Fermi "arcs" in standard photoemission measurements. The area of the pockets as measured in this study is consistent with the doping level, …
Arguably the most intriguing aspect of the physics of cuprates is the close proximity between the record high-Tc superconductivity (HTSC) and the antiferromagnetic charge-transfer insulating state driven by Mott-like electron correlations. These are responsible for the intimate connection between high and low-energy scale physics, and their key role in the mechanism of HTSC was conjectured very early on. More recently, the detection of quantum oscillations in high-magnetic field experiments on YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO) has suggested the existence of a Fermi surface of well-defined quasiparticles in u…
By measuring the low temperature specific heat, the low energy quasi-particle excitation has been derived and analyzed in systematically doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals. The Volovik's relation predicted for a d-wave superconductor has been well demonstrated in wide doping regime, showing a robust evidence for the d-wave pairing symmetry. Furthermore the nodal gap slope $v_Δ$ of the superconducting gap is derived and is found to follow the same doping dependence of the pseudogap obtained from ARPES and tunnelling measurement. This strongly suggests a close relationship between…

The Fermi surface is a central concept in the theory of metals. Even though the optimally doped high temperature superconductors exhibit an anomalous normal state, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has revealed a large Fermi surface despite the absence of well-defined quasiparticles and the necessity of working at finite temperatures. However, the even more unusual behavior in the underdoped high temperature superconductors, which show a pseudogap above Tc, requires us to carefully re-examine this concept. Here, we present the first results on how the Fermi surface is destroyed…
Angle resolved photoemission on underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 reveals that the magnitude and d-wave anisotropy of the superconducting state energy gap are independent of temperature all the way up to Tc. This lack of T variation of the entire k-dependent gap is in marked contrast to mean field theory. At Tc the point nodes of the d-wave gap abruptly expand into finite length ``Fermi arcs''. This change occurs within the width of the resistive transition, and thus the Fermi arcs are not simply thermally broadened nodes but rather a unique signature of the pseudogap phase.
Within a gauge approach to the t-J model, we propose a new, non-BCS mechanism of superconductivity for underdoped cuprates. We implement the no-double occupancy constraint with a (semionic) slave-particle formalism. The dopant generates a vortex-like quantum distortion of the AF background centered on the empty sites, with opposite chirality for cores on the two Néel sublattices. Empty sites are described in terms of spinless fermionic holons and the long-range attraction between spin vortices on two opposite Néel sublattices is the holon pairing force, leading eventually to SC. The spin fluct…
A full Fermi surface exists in underdoped high-temperature superconductors if the temperature T lies above the pseudogap temperature T*. Below T* only arcs of Fermi surface survive, scaling with T/T* as T -> 0, with T* displaying strong doping dependence. There is no accepted explanation for this behavior. We show that generalizing the BCS theory of normal superconductivity to include d-wave pairs and antiferromagnetism leads to the origin and doping dependence of the T* scale, and a quantitative description of Fermi arcs. These results place strong constraints on viable theories of high-tempe…
We consider the effect of a short antiferromagnetic correlation length $ξ$ on the electronic bandstructure of the underdoped cuprates. Starting with a Fermi-surface topology similar to that detected in magnetic quantum-oscillation experiments, we show that a reduced $ξ$ gives an assymmetric broadening of the quasiparticle dispersion, resulting in simulated ARPES data very similar to those observed in experiment. Predicted features include the presence of `Fermi arcs' close to $a{\bf k}=(π/2,π/2)$, without the need to invoke a d-wave pseudogap order parameter. The statistical variation in the $…
The particle-hole asymmetry electronic state of cuprate superconductors and the related doping and temperature dependence of the Fermi arc length are studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. By taking into account the interplay between the SC gap and normal-state pseudogap, the essential feature of the evolution of the Fermi arc length with doping and temperature is qualitatively reproduced. It is shown that the particle-hole asymmetry electronic state is a natural consequence due to the presence the normal-state pseudogap in the particle-hole channel. The Fermi ar…
The mystery of the normal state in the underdoped cuprates has deepened with the use of newer and complementary experimental probes. While photoemission studies have revealed solely `Fermi arcs' centered on nodal points in the Brillouin zone at which holes aggregate upon doping, more recent quantum oscillation experiments have been interpreted in terms of an ambipolar Fermi surface, that includes sections containing electron carriers located at the antinodal region. To address the question of whether an ambipolar Fermi surface truly exists, here we utilize measurements of the second harmonic q…
At mean-field level the t-J model shows a phase diagram with close analogies to the phase diagram of hole doped cuprates. An order parameter associated with the flux or $d$ charge-density wave ($d$-CDW) phase competes and coexists with superconductivity at low doping showing characteristics identified with the observed pseudogap in underdoped cuprates. In addition, in the $d$-CDW state the Fermi surface is reconstructed toward pockets with low spectral weight in the outer part, resembling the arcs observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments. However, the $d$-CDW requires …
Despite twenty years of research, the phase diagram of high transition- temperature superconductors remains enigmatic. A central issue is the origin of the differences in the physical properties of these copper oxides doped to opposite sides of the superconducting region. In the overdoped regime, the material behaves as a reasonably conventional metal, with a large Fermi surface. The underdoped regime, however, is highly anomalous and appears to have no coherent Fermi surface, but only disconnected "Fermi arcs". The fundamental question, then, is whether underdoped copper oxides have a Fermi s…
The central puzzle of the cuprate superconductors at low hole density is the nature of the pseudogap regime. It has a number of seemingly distinct experimental signatures: a suppression of the paramagnetic spin susceptibility at high temperatures, low energy electronic excitations that extend over arcs in the Brillouin zone, X-ray detection of charge density wave order at intermediate temperatures, and quantum oscillations at high magnetic fields and low temperatures. We show that a model of competing charge density wave and superconducting orders provides a unified description of the intermed…
The microscopical analysis of the unconventional and puzzling physics of the underdoped cuprates, as carried out lately by means of the Composite Operator Method (COM) applied to the 2D Hubbard model, is reviewed and systematized. The 2D Hubbard model has been adopted as it has been considered the minimal model capable to describe the most peculiar features of cuprates held responsible for their anomalous behavior. COM is designed to endorse, since its foundations, the systematic emergence in any SCS of new elementary excitations described by composite operators obeying non-canonical algebras.…
The real part of the optical in-plane conductivity of p-- and n--type cuprates thin films at various doping levels was deduced from highly accurate reflectivity measurements. We present here a comprehensive set of optical spectral weight data as a function of the temperature $T (> T_c$), for underdoped and overdoped samples. The temperature dependence of the spectral weight is not universal. Using various cut-off frequencies for the spectral weight, we show that n--type Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ and p--type Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ exhibit both similarities and striking differences. The Fer…
In the underdoped high temperature superconductors, instead of a complete Fermi surface above Tc, only disconnected Fermi arcs appear, separated by regions that still exhibit an energy gap. We show that in this pseudogap phase, the energy-momentum relation of electronic excitations near E_F behaves like the dispersion of a normal metal on the Fermi arcs, but like that of a superconductor in the gapped regions. We argue that this dichotomy in the dispersion is hard to reconcile with a competing order parameter, but is consistent with pairing without condensation.
We discuss the high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxide ceramics. We propose an effective Hamiltonian to describe the dynamics of electrons or holes injected into the copper oxide layers. We show that our approach is able to account for both the pseudogap and the superconductivity gap. For the hole-doped cuprates we discuss in details the underdoped, optimal doped, and overdoped regions of the phase diagram. In the underdoped region we determine the doping dependence of the upper critical magnetic field, the vortex region, and the discrete states bounded to the core of isolated vorti…
In the pseudogap state of the high-Tc copper-oxide (cuprate) superconductors, angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements have seen an Fermi arc, i.e., an open-ended gapless section in the large Fermi surface, rather than a closed loop expected of an ordinary metal. This is all the more puzzling because Fermi pockets (small closed Fermi surface features) have been suggested from recent quantum oscillation measurements. The Fermi arcs have worried the high-Tc community for many years because they cannot be understood in terms of existing theories. Theorists came up with a way out in the f…
From the perspective of thermal fluctuations, we investigate the pseudogap phenomena in underdoped high-temperature curpate superconductors. We present a local update Monte Carlo procedure based on the Green's function method to sample the fluctuating pairing field. The Chebyshev polynomial method is applied to calculate the single-particle spectral function directly and efficiently. The evolution of Fermi arcs as a function of temperature is studied by examining the spectral function at Fermi energy as well as the loss of spectral weight. Our results signify the importance of the vortex-like …
Pseudogap phenomena and the formation of Fermi arcs in underdoped cuprates are numerically studied in the presence of phase fluctuations that are simulated by an XY model. Most importantly the spectral function for each Monte Carlo sample is calculated directly and efficiently by the Chebyshev polynomials without having to diagonalize the fermion Hamiltonian, which enables us to handle a system large enough to achieve sufficient momentum/energy resolution. We find that the momentum dependence of the energy gap is identical to that of a pure d-wave superconductor well below the KT-transition te…
Since the discovery of the pseudogap and Fermi arc states in underdoped cuprates, the understanding of such non-Fermi-liquid states and the associated violation of Luttinger's theorem have been the central theme in correlated electron systems. However, still lacking is a well-accepted theoretical framework to unambiguously explain these metallic states that are clearly beyond Landau's Fermi liquid and Luttinger's theorem of a Fermi surface and electron filling. Here, we design a lattice model of orthogonal metals with fermion and Ising matter fields coupled to topological order and, by solving…
The characteristic features of the renormalization of the electrons in the bilayer cuprate superconductors are investigated within the kinetic-energy driven superconductivity. It is shown that the quasiparticle excitation spectrum is split into its bonding and antibonding components due to the presence of the bilayer coupling, with each component that is independent. However, in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes, although the bonding and antibonding electron Fermi surface (EFS) contours deriving from the bonding and antibonding layers are truncated to form the bonding and antibonding …
By paying special attention to the fact that the doped holes induce deformation of CuO6 octahedrons (or CuO5 pyramids) in cuprate superconductors, we develop a non-rigid band theory treating doping-induced alterations of energy-band structures in copper oxide superconductors. Thanks to this theory, we obtain a complete picture of the doping-induced alteration in the electronic structure of La2CuO4, from the spin-disordered insulating phase to the metallic phase. We conclude that the Fermi surface structure of this cuprate in the underdoped region consists of Fermi pockets in the antinodal regi…
A major impediment to solving the problem of high-$T_c$ superconductivity is the ongoing confusion about the magnitude, structure and doping dependence of the superconducting gap, $Δ_0$, and of the mysterious pseudogap found in underdoped samples\cite{TallonLoram}. The pseudogap opens around the ($π$,0) antinodes below a temperature $T^*$ leaving Fermi arcs across the remnant Fermi surface\cite{Kanigel} on which the superconducting gap forms at $T_c$. One thing that seems agreed is that the ratio $2Δ_0/k_BT_c$ well exceeds the BCS value and grows with underdoping\cite{Miyakawa1,Miyakawa2}, sug…
The existence of electronic symmetry breaking in the underdoped cuprates, and its disappearance with increased hole-density $p$, are now widely reported. However, the relationship between this transition and the momentum space ($\vec{k}$-space) electronic structure underpinning the superconductivity has not been established. Here we visualize the $\vec{Q}$=0 (intra-unit-cell) and $\vec{Q}\neq$0 (density wave) broken-symmetry states simultaneously with the coherent $\vec{k}$-space topology, for Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+d}$ samples spanning the phase diagram 0.06$\leq p \leq$0.23. We show that …
One of the puzzling characteristics of the pseudogap phase of high-$T_c$ cuprates is the nodal-antinodal dichotomy. While the nodal quasiparticles have a Fermi liquid behaviour, the antinodal ones show non-Fermi liquid features and an associated pseudogap. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and electronic Raman scattering are two valuable tools which have shown universal features which are rather material-independent, and presumably intrinsic to the pseudogap phase. The doping and temperature dependence of the Fermi arcs and the pseudogap observed by photoemission near the antinode corr…
The understanding of the origin of superconductivity in cuprates has been hindered by the apparent diversity of intertwining electronic orders in these materials. We combined resonant x-ray scattering (REXS), scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM), and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to observe a charge order that appears consistently in surface and bulk, and in momentum and real space within one cuprate family, Bi2201. The observed wave vectors rule out simple antinodal nesting in the single-particle limit but match well with a phenomenological model of a many-body instability …
In the search for mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity it is critical to know the electronic spectrum in the pseudogap phase from which superconductivity evolves. The lack of angle-resolved photoemission data for every cuprate family precludes an agreement as to its structure, doping and temperature dependence and the role of charge ordering. Here we show that, in the entire Fermi-liquid-like regime that is ubiquitous in underdoped cuprates, the spectrum consists of holes on the Fermi arcs and an electronic pocket. We argue that experiments on the Hall coefficient identify the latt…
