We show that for any $λ\in \mathbb{C}$ with $|λ|<1$ there exists an analytic expanding circle map such that the eigenvalues of the associated transfer operator (acting on holomorphic functions) are precisely the nonnegative powers of $λ$ and $\barλ$. As a consequence we obtain a counterexample to a variant of a conjecture of Mayer on the reality of spectra of transfer operators.
We explicitly determine the spectrum of transfer operators (acting on spaces of holomorphic functions) associated to analytic expanding circle maps arising from finite Blaschke products. This is achieved by deriving a convenient natural representation of the respective adjoint operators.
We discuss dynamics of skew product maps defined by circle diffeomorphisms forced by expanding circle maps. We construct an open class of such systems that are robust topologically mixing and for which almost all points in the same fiber converge under iteration. This property follows from the construction of an invariant attracting graph in the natural extension, a skew product of circle diffeomorphisms forced by a solenoid homeomorphism.
We prove that there exists a dense set of analytic expanding maps of the circle for which the Ruelle eigenvalues enjoy exponential lower bounds. The proof combines potential theoretic techniques and explicit calculations for the spectrum of expanding Blaschke products.
Takens constructed a residual subset of the state space consisting of initial points with historic behaviour for expanding maps on the circle. We prove that this statistical property of expanding maps on the circle is preserved under small random perturbations. The proof is given by establishing a random Markov partition, which follows from a random version of Shub's Theorem on topological conjugacy with the folding maps.
We construct a real-analytic circle map for which the corresponding Perron-Frobenius operator has a real-analytic eigenfunction with an eigenvalue outside the essential spectral radius when acting upon $C^1$-functions.
We show that for a large class of potential functions and big coupling constant $λ$ the Schrödinger cocycle over the expanding map $x\mapsto bx ~( \text{mod} 1)$ on $\mathbb{T}$ has a Lyapunov exponent $>(\logλ)/4$ for all energies, provided that the integer $b\geq λ^3$.
In this paper, we prove that for real analytic expanding circle maps, all optimizing measures of a real analytic potential function have zero entropy, unless the potential is cohomologous to constant. We use the group structure of the symbolic space to solve a transversality problem involved. We also discuss applications to optimizing measures for generic smooth potentials and to Lyapunov optimizing measures.
We study random circle maps that are expanding on the average. Uniform bounds on neither expansion nor distortion are required. We construct a coupling scheme, which leads to exponential convergence of measures (memory loss) and exponential mixing. Leveraging from the structure of the associated correlation estimates, we prove an almost sure invariance principle for vector-valued observables. The motivation for our paper is to explore these methods in a nonuniform random setting.
In order to adapt to the differentiable setting a formula for linear response proved by Pollicott and Vytnova in the analytic setting, we show a result of regularity of dynamical determinants of expanding maps of the circle. The main tool is the decomposition of a transfer operator as a sum of a nuclear part and a "small" bounded part.
We consider a smooth expanding map g on the circle of degree 2. It is known that the Lyapunov exponent of g with respect to the unique invariant measure that is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure is positive and less than or equal to log 2 which, in addition, is less than or equal to the Lyapunov exponent of g with respect to the measure of maximal entropy. Moreover, the equalities only occur simultaneously. We show that these are the only restrictions on the Lyapunov exponents considered above for smooth expanding maps of degree 2.
In this short and elementary note, we study some ergodic optimization problems for circle expanding maps. We first make an observation that if a function is not far from being convex, then its calibrated sub-actions are closer to convex functions in certain effective way. As an application of this simple observation, for circle doubling map, we generalize a result of Bousch saying that translations of the cosine function are uniquely optimized by Sturmian measures. Our argument follows the mainline of Bousch's original proof, while the technical part is simplified by the observation mentioned …
This paper presents a finite difference method combined with the Crank--Nicolson scheme of the Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation defined on an expanding circle (\cite{KUY}), and the existence, uniqueness, and second-order error estimate of the scheme. The equation can be obtained as a perturbation equation from the circle solution to an interfacial equation and can provide guidelines for understanding the wavenumber selection of solutions to the interfacial equation. Our proposed numerical scheme can help with such a mathematical analysis.
In this note, we establish an original result for the thermodynamic formalism in the context of expanding circle transformations with an indifferent fixed point. For an observable whose continuity modulus is linked to the dynamics near such a fixed point, by identifying an appropriate linear space to evaluate the action of the transfer operator, we show that there is a strictly positive eigenfunction associated with the maximal eigenvalue given as the exponential of the topological pressure. Taking into account also the corresponding eigenmeasure, the invariant probability thus obtained is pro…
Given a $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ expanding map $T$ of the circle, we construct a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ of smooth functions on which the transfer operator $\mathcal{L}$ associated to $T$ acts as a compact operator. This result is made quantitative (in terms of singular values of the operator $\mathcal{L}$ acting on $\mathcal{H}$) using the language of Denjoy-Carleman classes. Moreover, the nuclear power decomposition of Baladi and Tsujii can be performed on the space $\mathcal{H}$, providing a bound on the growth of the dynamical determinant associated to $\mathcal{L}$.
This paper concerns the compact group extension \[ f:\mathbb{T}^2\to \mathbb{T}^2,\quad f (x,s)= (E(x), s+τ(x)\ \text{mod }1) \] of an expanding map $E:\mathbb{S}^1\to \mathbb{S}^1$. The dynamics of $f$ and its stochastic perturbations have previously been studied under the so-called partial captivity condition. Here we prove a supplementary result that shows that partial captivity is a $\mathscr{C}^r$ generic condition on $τ$, once we fix $E$.
It is well-known that the Manneville-Pomeau map with a parabolic fixed point of the form $x\mapsto x+x^{1+α} \mod 1$ is stochastically stable for $α\ge 1$ and the limiting measure is the Dirac measure at the fixed point. In this paper we show that if $α\in (0,1)$ then it is also stochastically stable. Indeed, the stationary measure of the random map converges strongly to the absolutely continuous invariant measure for the deterministic system as the noise tends to zero.
For any C1 expanding map f of the circle we study the equilibrium states for the potential -log |f'|. We formulate a C1 generalization of Pesin's Entropy Formula that holds for all the SRB measures if they exist, and for all the (necessarily existing) SRB-like measures. In the C1-generic case Pesin's Entropy Formula holds for a unique SRB measure which is not absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue. The result also stands in the non generic case for which no SRB measure exists.
In this paper, several fundamental facts, especially the existence and uniqueness of an absolutely continuous ergodic measure with an exponential mixing rate, are derived for smooth expanding circle maps. Although the results are classical, the coupling method is relatively modern and employed here for the first time to yield explicit bounds in terms of system constants. The work constitutes a part of the author's Bachelor's thesis. The author hopes that the manuscript can serve as a useful introduction to the flexible coupling method in the theory of dynamical systems.
A long-standing question is what invariant sets can be shared by two maps acting on the same space. A similar question stands for invariant measures. A particular interesting case are expanding Markov maps of the circle. If the two involved maps are commuting the answer is almost complete. However very little is known in the non-commutative case. A first step is to analyze the structure of the invariant sets of a single map. For a mapping of the circle of class $C^α$, $α>1$, we study the topological structure of the set containing all compact invariant sets. Furthermore for a fixed such mappin…
Using optimal transport we study some dynamical properties of expanding circle maps acting on measures by push-forward. Using the definition of the tangent space to the space of measures introduced by Gigli, their derivative at the unique absolutely continuous invariant measure is computed. In particular it is shown that 1 is an eigenvalue of infinite multiplicity, so that the invariant measure admits many deformations into nearly invariant ones. As a consequence, we obtain counter-examples to an infinitesimal version of Furstenberg's conjecture. We also prove that this action has positive met…
In this work we treat a famous topic in Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems: uniformly expanding maps. We relate regularity of expanding maps and conjugacies with Lyapunov exponents, metric and topological entropies for expanding maps of the circle. In Theorem C, we present a result of rigidity of expanding maps on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2,$ after we naturally generalize it in higher dimensions. Here, we present techniques involving ordinary differential equations to study rigidity problems of expanding maps. Along of this work we provide another proof of a Shub-Sullivan's Theorem, concerning …
Globally coupled doubling maps are studied in this paper. In this setting and for finitely many sites, two distinct bifurcation values of the coupling strength have been identified in the literature, corresponding to the emergence of contracting directions (\cite{koiller2010coupled}) and, specifically for $N=3$ sites, to the loss of ergodicity (\cite{fernandez2014breaking}). On the one hand, we reconsider these results and provide an interpretation of the observed dynamical phenomena in terms of the synchronization of the sites. On the other hand, we initiate a new point of view which focuses …
We study the effects of IID random perturbations of amplitude $ε> 0$ on the asymptotic dynamics of one-parameter families $\{f_a : S^1 \to S^1, a \in [0,1]\}$ of smooth multimodal maps which "predominantly expanding", i.e., $|f'_a| \gg 1$ away from small neighborhoods of the critical set $\{ f'_a = 0 \}$. We obtain, for any $ε> 0$, a \emph{checkable, finite-time} criterion on the parameter $a$ for random perturbations of the map $f_a$ to exhibit (i) a unique stationary measure, and (ii) a positive Lyapunov exponent comparable to $\int_{S^1} \log |f_a'| \, dx$. This stands in contrast with the …
A topological classification of many classes of dynamical systems with regular dynamics in low dimensions is often reduced to combinatorial invariants. In dimension 3 combinatorial invariants are proved to be insufficient even for simplest Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms. The complete topological invariant for the systems with a single saddle point on the 3-sphere is the embedding of the homotopy non-trivial knot into the manifold $\mathbb S^2\times\mathbb S^1$. If a diffeomorphism has several saddle points their unstable separatrices form arcs frames in the basin of the sink and circles frame in …
We prove that any $C^{1+BV}$ degree $d \geq 2$ circle covering $h$ having all periodic orbits weakly expanding, is conjugate in the same smoothness class to a metrically expanding map. We use this to connect the space of parabolic external maps (coming from the theory of parabolic-like maps) to metrically expanding circle coverings.
How can one change a system, in order to change its statistical properties in a prescribed way? In this note we consider a control problem related to the theory of linear response. Given an expanding map of the unit circle with an associated invariant density we can consider the inverse problem of finding which first order changes in the transformation can achieve a given first order perturbation in the density. We show the general mathematical structure of the problem, the existence of many solutions in the case of expanding maps of the circle and the existence of optimal ones. We investigate…
We consider quenched random perturbations of skew products of rotations on the unit circle over uniformly expanding maps on the unit circle. It is known that if the skew product satisfies a certain condition (shown to be generic in the case of linear expanding maps), then the transfer operator of the skew product has a spectral gap. Using semiclassical analysis we show that the spectral gap is preserved under small random perturbations. This implies exponential decay of quenched random correlation functions for smooth observables at small noise levels.
We show that a finitely generated group of analytic diffeomorphisms that is expanding and locally discrete in the analytic category is analytically conjugate to a uniform lattice of a finite covering of the group of projective maps of the projective line, acting naturally on the corresponding finite covering of the projective line.
We prove that there exists an open and dense subset $\mathcal{U}$ in the space of $C^{2}$ expanding self-maps of the circle $\mathbb{T}$ such that the Lyapunov minimizing measures of any $T\in{\mathcal U}$ are uniquely supported on a periodic orbit. This answers a conjecture of Jenkinson-Morris in the $C^2$ topology.
For a certain parametrized family of maps on the circle with critical points and logarithmic singularities where derivatives blow up to infinity, we construct a positive measure set of parameters corresponding to maps which exhibit nonuniformly expanding behavior. This implies the existence of "chaotic" dynamics in dissipative homoclinic tangles in periodically perturbed differential equations.
The concept of "$A$-coupled-expanding" map for a transition matrix $A$ has been studied as one of the most important criteria of chaos in the past years. In this paper, the lower bound of the topological entropy for strictly $A$-coupled-expanding maps is studied as a criterion for chaos in the sense of Li-Yorke, which is less conservative and more generalized than the latest result is presented. Furthermore, some conditions for $A$-coupled-expanding maps excluding the strictness to be factors of subshifts of finite type are derived. In addition, the topological entropy of partition-$A$-coupled…
In this work we lead with expanding maps of the circle and Anosov diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb{T}^d, d \geq 2.$ We prove that, for these maps, \textit{constant periodic data} imply \textit{same periodic data of these maps and their linearizations}, so in particular we have smooth conjugacy. For expanding maps of the circle and Anosov diffeomorphism on $\mathbb{T}^d, d= 2, 3,$ we have global rigidity. In higher dimensions, $d \geq 4,$ we can establish a result of local rigidity, in several cases. The main tools of this work are celebrated results of rigidity involving same periodic data with lin…
We consider the skew-product of an expanding map $E$ on the circle $\mathbb T$ with an almost surely $\mathcal C^k$ random perturbation $τ=τ_0+δτ$ of a deterministic function $τ_0$: \[F :\left\{\begin{array}{rcl} \mathbb T \times \mathbb R & \longrightarrow & \mathbb T \times \mathbb R\\ (x,y)& \longmapsto & (E(x), y+τ(x))\\ \end{array} \right.\] The associated transfer operator $\mathcal L:u \in \mathcal C^k (\mathbb T \times \mathbb R) \mapsto u\circ F$ can be decomposed with respect to frequency in the $y$ variable into a family of operators acting on functions on the circle: \[\mathcal L_ξ…
In this paper we generalize renormalization theory for analytic critical circle maps with a cubic critical point to the case of maps with an arbitrary odd critical exponent by proving a quasiconformal rigidity statement for renormalizations of such maps.
We extend some aspects of the smooth approximation by conjugation method to the real-analytic set-up and create examples of zero entropy, uniquely ergodic real-analytic diffeomorphisms of the two dimensional torus metrically isomorphic to some (Liouvillian) irrational rotations of the circle.
It is shown that if $f$ and $g$ are any two analytic critical circle mappings with the same irrational rotation number, then the conjugacy that maps the critical point of $f$ to that of $g$ has regularity $C^{1+α}$ at the critical point, with a universal value of $α>0$. As a consequence, a new proof of the hyperbolicity of the full renormalization horseshoe of critical circle maps is given.
We prove that if two analytic multicritical circle maps with the same bounded type rotation number are topologically conjugate by a conjugacy which matches the critical points of the two maps while preserving the orders of their criticalities, then the conjugacy necessarily has $C^{1+α}$ regularity, where $α$ depends only on the bound on the type of the rotation number. We then extend this rigidity result to $C^3$-smooth bi-cubic circle maps.
For a certain parametrized family of maps on the circle, with critical points and logarithmic singularities where derivatives blow up to infinity, a positive measure set of parameters was constructed in [19], corresponding to maps which exhibit nonuniformly hyperbolic behavior. For these parameters, we prove the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures with good statistical properties, such as exponential decay of correlations. Combining our construction with the logarithmic nature of the singularities, we obtain a positive variance in Central Limit Theorem, for any nonconstant Hö…
We consider compact Lie groups extensions of expanding maps of the circle, essentially restricting to U(1) and SU(2) extensions. The central object of the paper is the associated Ruelle transfer (or pull-back) operator $\hat{F}$. Harmonic analysis yields a natural decomposition $\hat{F}=\oplus\hat{F}_α$, where $α$ indexes the irreducible representation spaces. Using Semiclassical techniques we extend a previous result by Faure proving an asymptotic spectral gap for the family ${\hat{F}_α}$ when restricted to adapted spaces of distributions. Our main result is a fractal Weyl upper bound for the…
We consider finitely generated groups of real-analytic circle diffeomorphisms. We show that if such a group admits an exceptional minimal set (i.e., a minimal invariant Cantor set), then its Lebesgue measure is zero; moreover, there are only finitely many orbits of connected components of its complement. For the case of minimal actions, we show that if the underlying group is (algebraically) free, then the action is ergodic with respect to the Lebesgue measure. This provides first answers to questions due to É. Ghys, G. Hector and D. Sullivan.
For a Markov map of an interval or the circle with countably many branches and finitely many neutral periodic points, we establish conditional variational formulas for the mixed multifractal spectra of Birkhoff averages of countably many observables, in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of invariant probability measures. Using our results, we are able to exhibit new fractal-geometric results for backward continued fraction expansions of real numbers, answering in particular a question of Pollicott. Moreover, we establish formulas for multi-cusp winding spectra for the Bowen-Series maps associat…
