The paper considers the possibility of the existence of the axial current, that is directed along the axis of rotation and arises due to the presence of the Q-ball.
We study the contribution of temperature-dependent chiral vortical effect to the generation and evolution of the hypermagnetic fields and the matter-antimatter asymmetries, in the symmetric phase of the early Universe, in the temperature range $100\mbox{GeV} \le T\le 10\mbox{TeV}$. Our most important result is that, due to the chiral vortical effect, small overlapping transient fluctuations in the vorticity field in the plasma and temperature of matter degrees of freedom can lead to the generation of strong hypermagnetic fields and matter-antimatter asymmetries, all starting from zero initial …
We study collective excitations in rotating chiral media in presence of magnetic field both in hydrodynamic framework and in kinetic theory. We find that the velocity of the mixed Chiral Magnetic-Vortical Wave is a vector sum of velocities of pure Magnetic and Vortical waves which do not exist separately under these conditions. We also use relaxation time approximation to prove that this wave itself is a non-dissipative phenomenon.
We revisit the evaluation of the chiral vortical effect in the accelerated matter. To first order in the acceleration the corresponding matrix element of the axial current can be reconstructed from the flat-space limit. A crucial point is the existence in the this case of an extra conservation law of fluid helicity. As a result, the chirality of the microscopic degrees of freedom and helicity of the macroscopic motion are separately conserved. This separation persists also in presence of gravity. Implications for the thermal chiral vortical effect are discussed.
We consider the system of relativistic rotating fermions in the presence of rotation. The rotation is set up as an enhancement of the angular momentum. In this approach the angular velocity for the angular momentum plays the same role as the chemical potential for density. We calculate the axial current using the direct solutions of the Dirac equation with the MIT bag boundary conditions. Next, we consider the alternative way of the rotation description, in which the local velocity of the substance multiplied by the chemical potential serves as the effective gauge field. In this approach this …
The vortical susceptibility of chiral condensate is derived in two ways. First we obtain this using the spectrum of the Dirac operator in a metric of a curved space-time, which corresponds to rotation. Second we come to the expression for the susceptibility via the holographic approach to QCD.

We perform an explicit calculation of the axial current at finite rotation and temperature in curved space. We find that finite curvature and mass corrections to the chiral vortical effect satisfy a relation of the chiral gap effect, that is, a fermion mass-shift by a scalar curvature. We also point out that a product term of the angular velocity and the scalar curvature shares the same coefficient as the mixed gravitational chiral anomaly. We discuss possible applications of the curvature induced chiral vortical effect to rotating astrophysical compact objects described by the Kerr metric. In…
We study coefficients of axial chiral vortical effect and chiral separation effect at finite temperature and vector chemical potential in massive theories. We present two independent methods of calculating the coefficients: one from field theory and the other using the mass term in axial anomaly equation. An ambiguity in the integration constant similar to hydrodynamic approach to axial chiral vortical effect exists in the latter, but can be fixed naturally in the presence of mass. We obtain perfect agreement between the methods. The results of axial chiral vortical effect and chiral separatio…
We discuss the type of the general macroscopic parity-violating effects, when there is the current along the vortex, which is concentrated in the vortex core. We consider vortices in superfluids, which contain the Weyl points. In the vortex core the positions of the Weyl points form the skyrmion structure. We show that the mass current concentrated in such a core is provided by the spectral flow through the Weyl points according to the Adler-Bell-Jackiw equation for chiral anomaly.
In this paper, we study the contribution of the chiral vortical effect, in addition to that of the chiral magnetic effect, to the evolution of the hypermagnetic field and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the symmetric phase of the early Universe in the temperature range 100GeV < T < 10TeV. We choose a fully helical Chern-Simons wave configuration for the velocity and the hypermagnetic vector potential fields. The latter makes the plasma force-free in the absence of viscosity. We show that the most pronounced effect of the chiral vorticity is the production and initial growth of the hypermagn…
In certain circumstances, chiral (parity-violating) medium can be described hydrodynamically as a chiral fluid with microscopic quantum anomalies. Possible examples of such systems include strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma, liquid helium 3He-A, neutron stars and the Early Universe. We study first-order hydrodynamics of a chiral fluid on a vortex background and in an external magnetic field. We show that there are two previously undiscovered modes describing heat waves propagating along the vortex and magnetic field. We call them the Thermal Chiral Vortical Wave and Thermal Chiral Magnetic Wa…
We employ a 3+1D anomalous hydrodynamics with initial condition generated by HIJING to simulate the chiral vortical effect and the chiral magnetic effect in heavy-ion collisions. This allows us to calculate the charge-dependent two-particle correlations with respect to the reaction plane at different collision energies and centralities. We then compare the computed results with the experimental data and give discussions on the possible background effects.
Gluon interaction introduces remarkable corrections to the magnetic polarization effects on the chiral fermions, which is known as the inverse magnetic catalysis. It is a natural speculation that the vorticity, which has many similar properties as magnetic field, would bring non-negligible contribution to the chiral rotational suppression. Using the intuitive semi-classical background field method we studied the rotation dependence of the effective strong interaction coupling. Contrary to the magnetic field case the rotation increases the effective coupling which leads to slowing down the cond…
We argue that the enhancement in the spin polarization of anti-hyperons compared to the polarization of the hyperons in noncentral relativistic heavy-ion collisions arises as a result of an interplay between the chiral and helical vortical effects. The chiral vortical effect generates the axial current of quarks along the vorticity axis while the recently found helical vortical effect generates the helicity flow -- the projection of the quark's polarization vector onto its momentum -- along the same axis. For massless fermions, the helical charge corresponds to a difference in the contribution…
The rotation of polarization occurs for light interacting with chiral materials. It requires the light states with opposite chiralities interact differently with the materials. We demonstrate analogous rotation of polarization also exists for chiral fermions interacting with quantum electrodynamics plasma with vorticity using chiral kinetic theory. We find that the rotation of polarization is perpendicular both to vorticity and fermion momentum. The effect also exists for chiral fermions in quantum chromodynamics plasma with vorticity. It could lead to generation of a vector current when the p…
We consider chiral fluids, with (nearly) massless fermionic constituents, in the confining phase. Chiral vortical effect (CVE) is the flow of axial current along the axis of rotation of the fluid while the spin alignment is a non-vanishing correlation of polarizations of baryons with the axis of rotation. As the theoretical framework we use the model of pionic superfluidity induced by a non-vanishing isotopic chemical potential. We note that the average value of spin of virtual baryons reproduces the CVE. The role of defects, or vortices is crucial. The model does not apply directly to the qua…
We consider photonic vortical effect, i.e. the difference of the flows of left- and right-handed photons along the vector of angular velocity in rotating photonic medium. Two alternative frameworks to evaluate the effect are considered, both of which have already been tried in the literature. First, the standard thermal fied theory and, alternatively, Hawking-radiation-type derivation. In our earlier attempt to compare the two approaches, we found a crucial factor of two difference. Here we revisit the problem, paying more attention to details of infrared regularizations. We find out that intr…
We study the effect of hotter or colder particles on the evolution of the chiral magnetic field in the early universe. We are interested in the temperature dependent term in the chiral vortical effect. There are no changes in the magnetic energy spectrum at large lengthscales but in the Kolmogorov regime we do find a difference. Our numerical results show that the Gaussian peak in the magnetic spectrum becomes negatively skewed. The negatively skewed peak can be fitted with a beta distribution. Analytically one can relate the non-Gaussianity of the distribution to the temperature dependent vor…
We study the chiral vortical effect far from equilibrium in a strongly coupled holographic field theory. Rotation is represented as a perturbation via a gravito-magnetic field on top of a five-dimensional charged AdS Vaidya metric. We also introduce a momentum relaxation mechanism by linear scalar field backgrounds and study the CVE dynamics as function of the charges, temperature and momentum relaxation. The far from equilibrium behavior shows that the CVE builds up with a significant delay in time compared to the quasi instantaneous equilibration of the background metric. We also pay special…
Based on a holographic model incorporating both chiral anomaly and gravitational anomaly, we study the effect of magneto-vortical coupling on transport properties of a strongly coupled plasma. The focus of present work is on the generation of a vector charge density and an axial current, as response to vorticity in a magnetized plasma. The transport coefficients parameterising the vector charge density and axial current are calculated both analytically (in the weak magnetic field limit) and also numerically (for general values of the magnetic field). We find the generation of vector charge rec…
Rotating photon gas exhibits a chirality separation along the angular velocity which is manifested through a generation of helicity and zilch currents. In this paper we study this system using the corresponding Wigner function and construct elements of the covariant chiral kinetic theory for photons from first principles. The Wigner function is solved order-by-order in $\hbar$ and the unconstrained terms are fixed by matching with quantum field theory results. We further consider the zilch and helicity currents and show that both manifestations of the chirality transport originate in the Berry…
We consider the notion of zilch current that was recently discussed in the literature as an alternative helicity measure for photons. Developing this idea, we suggest the generalization of the zilch for the systems of fermions. We start with the definition of the photonic zilch current in chiral kinetic theory framework and work out field-theoretical definition of the fermionic zilch using the Wigner function formalism. This object has similar properties to the photonic zilch and is conserved in the non-interacting theory. We also show that, in full analogy with a case of photons, the fermioni…
We develop covariant chiral kinetic theory with Landau level basis. We use it to investigate a magnetized plasma with a transverse electric field and a steady vorticity as perturbations. After taking into account vacuum shift in the latter case, we find the resulting current and stress tensor in both cases can be matched consistently with constitutive equations of magnetohydrodynamics. We find the solution in the vorticity case contains both shifts in temperature and chemical potential as well as excitations of the lowest Landau level states. The solution gives rise to an vector charge density…
The interplay of quantum anomalies with magnetic field and vorticity results in a variety of novel non-dissipative transport phenomena in systems with chiral fermions, including the quark-gluon plasma. Among them is the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) -- the generation of electric current along an external magnetic field induced by chirality imbalance. Because the chirality imbalance is related to the global topology of gauge fields, the CME current is topologically protected and hence non-dissipative even in the presence of strong interactions. As a result, the CME and related quantum phenomena …
We generalize the gravitational form factor for chiral fermion in vacuum, which reproduces the well-known spin-vorticity coupling. We also calculate radiative correction to the gravitational form factors in quantum electrodynamics plasma. We find two structures in the form factors contributing to the scattering amplitude of fermion in vorticity field, one is from the fermion self-energy correction, pointing to suppression of spin-vorticity coupling in medium; the other structure comes from graviton-fermion vertex correction, which does not adopt potential interpretation, but corresponds to tra…
We study a photonic analog of the chiral magnetic (vortical) effect. We discuss that the vector component of magnetoelectric tensors plays a role of "vector potential," and its rotation is understood as "magnetic field" of a light. Using the geometrical optics approximation, we show that "magnetic fields" cause an anomalous shift of a wave packet of a light through an interplay with the Berry curvature of photons. The mechanism is the same as that of the chiral magnetic (vortical) effect of a chiral fermion, so that we term the anomalous shift "chiral magnetic effect of a light." We further st…
Anomalous transport coefficients are known to be universal in the absence of dynamical gauge fields. We calculate the corrections to these universal values due to dynamical gluon fields at strong coupling, at finite temperature and finite density, using the holographic duality. We show that the consistent chiral magnetic and chiral vortical currents receive no corrections, while we derive a semi-analytic formula for the chiral separation conductivity. We determine these corrections in the large color, large flavor limit, in terms of a series expansion in the anomalous dimension $Δ$ of the axia…
We propose the new nondissipative transport effect - the appearance of axial current of thermal quasiparticles in the presence of background gravity with torsion. For the non-interacting model of massless Dirac fermions the response of the axial current to torsion is derived. The chiral vortical effect appears to be the particular case of the chiral torsional effect. The proposed effect may be observed in the condensed matter systems with emergent relativistic invariance (Weyl/Dirac semimetals and the $^3$He-A superfluid).
We discuss the spin, the angular momentum, and the magnetic moment of rotating chiral fermions using a kinetic theory. We find that, in addition to the chiral vortical contribution along the rotation axis, finite circular spin polarization is induced by the spin-momentum correlation of chiral fermions, which is canceled by a change in the orbital angular momentum. We point out that the eddy magnetic moment is nonvanishing due to the $g$-factors, exhibiting the chiral Barnett effect.
We present a novel perspective to characterize the chiral magnetic and related effects in terms of angular decomposed modes. We find that the vector current and the chirality density are connected through a surprisingly simple relation for all the modes and any mass, which defines the mode decomposed chiral magnetic effect in such a way free from the chiral chemical potential. The mode decomposed formulation is useful also to investigate properties of rotating fermions. For demonstration we give an intuitive account for a nonzero density emerging from a combination of rotation and magnetic fie…
In this work, we start with chiral kinetic theory and construct the spin hydrodynamic framework for a chiral spinor system. Using the 14-moment expansion formalism, we obtain the equations of motion of second-order dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics with non-trivial spin polarization density. In a chiral spinor system, the spin alignment effect could be treated in the same framework as the Chiral Vortical Effect (CVE). However, the quantum corrections due to fluid vorticity induce not only CVE terms in the vector/axial charge currents but also corrections to the stress tensor. In this fra…
Relativistic heavy ion collisions represent an arena for the probe of various anomalous transport effects. Those effects, in turn, reveal the correspondence between the solid state physics and the high energy physics, which share the common formalism of quantum field theory. It may be shown that for the wide range of {field-theoretic} models, the response of various nondissipative currents to the external gauge fields is determined by the momentum space topological invariants. Thus, the anomalous transport appears to be related to the investigation of momentum space topology -- the approach de…
We consider the question of whether Q-balls can exist in a chiral Lagrangian truncated at leading order when, in addition, the Standard Model Higgs boson couples to the pseudo-Nambu-Golstone bosons (pNGBs). In particular, we consider the so-called thin-wall limit where volume energy dominates over surface energy. It is known that the leading order chiral Lagrangian alone does not support such multi-field solutions. Augmented by the Higgs, however, we do indeed find that such solutions exist. We then study their properties numerically and, in various limits, analytically. Furthermore, since we …
The anomalous currents of two-flavor chiral nuclear matter in the presence of chiral imbalance are computed, using recently developed methods exploiting generalized transgression, which facilitates the evaluation of both the equilibrium partition function and the covariant currents. The constitutive relations for both the broken and unbroken phase of the theory are studied and the out-of-equilibrium nondissipative transport coefficients determined. In the superfluid phase, the vector covariant currents exhibit nondissipative chiral electric, magnetic, and vortical effects, the latter governed …
