We present a novel perspective to characterize the chiral magnetic and related effects in terms of angular decomposed modes. We find that the vector current and the chirality density are connected through a surprisingly simple relation for all the modes and any mass, which defines the mode decomposed chiral magnetic effect in such a way free from the chiral chemical potential. The mode decomposed formulation is useful also to investigate properties of rotating fermions. For demonstration we give an intuitive account for a nonzero density emerging from a combination of rotation and magnetic field as well as an approach to the chiral vortical effect at finite density.
Semiclassical chiral kinetic theories in the presence of electromagnetic fields as well as vorticity can be constructed by means of some different relativistic or nonrelativistic approaches. To cover the noninertial features of rotating frames one can start from the modified quantum kinetic equation of Wigner function in Minkowski spacetime. It provides a relativistic chiral transport equation whose nonrelativistic limit yields a consistent three-dimensional kinetic theory which does not depend explicitly on spatial coordinates. Recently a chiral transport equation in curved spacetime has been…
We study the chiral phase transition inside a rotating cylinder within the framework of the Namb--Jona-Lasinio model. A spectral boundary condition is imposed to avoid faster than light. We investigate how the geometry of the cylinder and rotation influence the chiral phase transition at finite temperature and chemical potential. The inhomogeneous effects caused by the finite size and rotation are also taken into account. It is found that finite size will reduce the chiral transition temperature and raises the chiral transition chemical potential, while the rotation reduces both the chiral tra…

We show the existence of a new gapless collective excitation in a rotating fluid system with chiral fermions, named as the Chiral Vortical Wave (CVW). The CVW has its microscopic origin at the quantum anomaly and macroscopically arises from interplay between vector and axial charge fluctuations induced by vortical effects. The wave equation is obtained both from hydrodynamic current equations and from chiral kinetic theory and its solutions show nontrivial CVW-induced charge transport from different initial conditions. Using the rotating quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions as a concrete…
It is shown that when the mass matrix changes in orientation (rotates) in generation space for changing energy scale, then the masses of the lower generations are not given just by its eigenvalues. In particular, these masses need not be zero even when the eigenvalues are zero. In that case, the strong CP problem can be avoided by removing the unwanted $θ$ term by a chiral transformation in no contradiction with the nonvanishing quark masses experimentally observed. Similarly, a rotating mass matrix may shed new light on the problem of chiral symmetry breaking. That the fermion mass matrix may…
A chiral soliton lattice (CSL), proposed as the ground state of rotating baryonic matter at a finite density, is shown to be unstable in a large parameter region for two flavors owing to pion condensations, leading to two types of non-Abelian (NA) CSL phases (dimer and deconfining phases). We determine the phase diagram where the dimer phase meets the other phases and QCD vacuum at three tricritical points. The critical angular velocity for NA-CSLs is lower than the $η$-CSL. Each NA soliton carries an isospin, and an antiferro-isospin chain is formed leading to gapless isospinons. The anomalou…
We propose an experimental setup using 3D Dirac semimetals to access a novel phenomenon induced by the chiral anomaly. We show that the combination of a magnetic field and a circularly polarized laser induces a finite charge density with an accompanying axial current. This is because the circularly polarized laser breaks time-reversal symmetry and the Dirac point splits into two Weyl points, which results in an axial-vector field. We elucidate the appearance of the axial-vector field with the help of the Floquet theory by deriving an effective Hamiltonian for high-frequency electric fields. Th…
The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a phenomenon in which an electric current is induced parallel to an external magnetic field in the presence of chiral asymmetry in a fermionic system. In this paper, we show that the electric current induced by the dynamics of a pseudo-scalar field which anomalously couples to electromagnetic fields can be interpreted as closely analogous to the CME. In particular, the velocity of the pseudo-scalar field, which is the phase of a complex scalar, indicates that the system carries a global U(1) number asymmetry as the source of the induced current. We demonstra…
We discuss the origins of temperature dependence of the axial vortical effect, i.e. generation of an axial current in a rotating chiral medium along the rotation axis. We show that the corresponding transport coefficient depends, in general, on the number of light weakly interacting degrees of freedom, rather than on the gravitational anomaly. We also comment on the role of low-dimensional defects in the rotating medium, and appearance of the chiral vortical effect due to them.
We study the ground states of low-density hadronic matter and high-density color-flavor locked color superconducting phase in three-flavor QCD at finite baryon chemical potential under rotation. We find that, in both cases under sufficiently fast rotation, the combination of the rotation-induced topological term for the eta' meson and the QCD anomaly leads to an inhomogeneous condensate of the eta' meson, known as the chiral soliton lattice (CSL). We find that, when baryon chemical potential is much larger than isospin chemical potential, the critical angular velocity for the realization of th…

We perform an explicit calculation of the axial current at finite rotation and temperature in curved space. We find that finite curvature and mass corrections to the chiral vortical effect satisfy a relation of the chiral gap effect, that is, a fermion mass-shift by a scalar curvature. We also point out that a product term of the angular velocity and the scalar curvature shares the same coefficient as the mixed gravitational chiral anomaly. We discuss possible applications of the curvature induced chiral vortical effect to rotating astrophysical compact objects described by the Kerr metric. In…
We study chiral fermions electroweakly interacting with a background matter having the nonuniform density and the velocity arbitrarily depending on coordinates. The dynamics of this system is described approximately by finding the Berry phase. The effective action and the kinetic equations for right and left particles are derived. In the case of a rotating matter, we obtain the correction to the anomalous electric current and to the Adler anomaly. Then we study some astrophysical applications. Assuming that the chiral imbalance in a rotating neutron star vanishes, we obtain the rate of the mag…
We consider the effects of an external magnetic field on rotating fermions in 1+2,3 dimensions. The dual effect of a rotation parallel to the magnetic field causes a net increase in the fermionic density by centrifugation, which follows from the sinking of the particle lowest Landau level in the Dirac sea for free Dirac fermions. In 1+d = 2n dimensions, this effect is related to the chiral magnetic effect in 2n-2 dimensions. This phenomenon is discussed specifically for both weak and strong inter-fermion interactions in 1+2 dimensions. For QCD in 1+3 dimensions with Dirac quarks, we show that …
In order to avoid unphysical causality-violating effects any rigidly rotating system must be bounded in directions transverse to the axis of rotation. We demonstrate that this requirement implies substantial dependence of properties of relativistically rotating system on the boundary conditions. We consider a system of interacting fermions described by the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a space bounded by cylindrical surface of finite radius. In order to confine the fermions inside the cylinder we impose "chiral" MIT boundary conditions on its surface. These boundary conditions are parameterized …
Present gravitational wave detectors are based on the measurement of linear displacement in stable optical cavities. Here, we instead suggest the measurement of the twist of a chiral mechanical element induced by a gravitational wave. The induced twist rotates a flat optical mirror on top of this chiral element, leading to the deflection of an incident laser beam. This angle change is enhanced by multiple bounces of light between the rotating mirror and an originally parallel nearby fixed flat mirror. Based on detailed continuum-mechanics calculations, we present a feasible design for the chir…
We study collective excitations in rotating chiral media in presence of magnetic field both in hydrodynamic framework and in kinetic theory. We find that the velocity of the mixed Chiral Magnetic-Vortical Wave is a vector sum of velocities of pure Magnetic and Vortical waves which do not exist separately under these conditions. We also use relaxation time approximation to prove that this wave itself is a non-dissipative phenomenon.
By making use of a covariant formulation of the chiral kinetic theory in the relaxation-time approximation, we derive the first-order dissipative hydrodynamics equations for a charged chiral plasma with background electromagnetic fields. We identify the global equilibrium state for a rotating chiral plasma confined to a cylindrical region with realistic boundary conditions. Then, by using linearized hydrodynamic equations, supplemented by the Maxwell equations, we study hydrodynamic modes of magnetized rotating chiral plasma in the regimes of high temperature and high density. We find that, in…
We study collective excitations in hot rotating chiral media in presence of magnetic field in kinetic theory, namely Chiral Heat Wave and its' mixings with Chiral Vortical Wave and Chiral Magnetic Wave. Our results for velocities of these waves have slight alterations from those obtained earlier. We explain the origin of these alterations and also give the most general expressions for the velocities of all these waves in hydrodynamic approach.
We discuss the spin, the angular momentum, and the magnetic moment of rotating chiral fermions using a kinetic theory. We find that, in addition to the chiral vortical contribution along the rotation axis, finite circular spin polarization is induced by the spin-momentum correlation of chiral fermions, which is canceled by a change in the orbital angular momentum. We point out that the eddy magnetic moment is nonvanishing due to the $g$-factors, exhibiting the chiral Barnett effect.
In order to gain deeper insight into the physics of the novel rotating solution of nonideal transverse magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), presented in one of our recent works, we replace the previously considered Maxwell theory with the ${\cal{CP}}$ violating Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) theory. In this way, dissipationless chiral magnetic (CM) and anomalous Hall (AH) currents appear in the MCS equation of motion, that, together with equations of relativistic hydrodynamics, builds the set of constitutive equations of the nonideal transverse Chern-Simons magnetohydrodynamics (CSMHD). We are, in particul…
The relativistic mean field (RMF) model of the nuclear matter equation of state has been modified by including the effect of Pauli-blocking owing to quark exchange between the baryons. Different schemes of a chiral enhancement of the quark Pauli blocking have been suggested according to the adopted density dependence of the dynamical quark mass. The resulting equations of state for the pressure are compared to the RMF model DD2 with excluded volume correction. On the basis of this comparison a density-dependent nucleon volume is extracted which parametrises the quark Pauli blocking effect in t…
Rotating photon gas exhibits a chirality separation along the angular velocity which is manifested through a generation of helicity and zilch currents. In this paper we study this system using the corresponding Wigner function and construct elements of the covariant chiral kinetic theory for photons from first principles. The Wigner function is solved order-by-order in $\hbar$ and the unconstrained terms are fixed by matching with quantum field theory results. We further consider the zilch and helicity currents and show that both manifestations of the chirality transport originate in the Berry…
We study rotating fermionic matter at finite temperature in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. In order to respect causality the rigidly rotating system must be bound by a cylindrical boundary with appropriate boundary conditions that confine the fermions inside the cylinder. We show the finite geometry with the MIT boundary conditions affects strongly the phase structure of the model leading to three distinct regions characterized by explicitly broken (gapped), partially restored (nearly gapless) and spontaneously broken (gapped) phases at, respectively, small, moderate and large …
We consider six-dimensional supergravity compactified on orbifolds with Wilson lines and bulk flux. Torus Wilson lines are decomposed into Wilson lines around the orbifold fixed points, and twisted boundary conditions of matter fields are related to fractional localized flux. Both, orbifold singularities and flux lead to chiral fermions in four dimensions. We show that in addition to the standard bulk and fixed point anomalies the Green-Schwarz term also cancels the four-dimensional anomaly induced by the flux background. The two axions contained in the antisymmetric tensor field both contribu…
We discuss the effect of rapid rotation on the phase diagram of hadronic matter. The energy dispersion relation is shifted by an effective chemical potential induced by rotation. This suggests that rotation should lower the critical temperature of chiral restoration, but it is still controversial how the deconfinement temperature should change as a function of angular velocity. We adopt the hadron resonance gas model as an approach free from fitting parameters. We identify the deconfinement from the thermodynamic behavior and find that rotation decreases the deconfinement temperature. We also …
The chiral magnetic and chiral separation effects---quantum-anomaly-induced electric current and chiral current along an external magnetic field in parity-odd quark-gluon plasma---have received intense studies in the community of heavy-ion collision physics. We show that analogous effects occur in rotating trapped Fermi gases with Weyl-Zeeman spin-orbit coupling where the rotation plays the role of an external magnetic field. These effects can induce a mass quadrupole in the atomic cloud along the rotation axis which may be tested in future experiments. Our results suggest that the spin-orbit …
We argue that, because of the peculiar properties of the $η'$ meson, it is a promising probe of "chiral" dynamics. In particular, we show that a rotating gluon-dominated plasma might lead to an enhanced production of $η'$ w.r.t. statistical model expectations. The presence of a strong topological susceptibility might give a similar effect. In both cases, unlike the statistical model,we expect a non-trivial dependence on event geometry, such as initial volume and impact parameter. Hence, an observation of $η'/π^0$ ratio depending strongly on impact parameter might be a good indication of chiral…
