The Haagerup property for locally compact groups is generalised to the context of locally compact quantum groups, with several equivalent characterisations in terms of the unitary representations and positive-definite functions established. In particular it is shown that a locally compact quantum group G has the Haagerup property if and only if its mixing representations are dense in the space of all unitary representations. For discrete G we characterise the Haagerup property by the existence of a symmetric proper conditionally negative functional on the dual quantum group $\hat{G}$; by the existence of a real proper cocycle on G, and further, if G is also unimodular we show that the Haagerup property is a von Neumann property of G. This extends results of Akemann, Walter, Bekka, Cherix, Valette, and Jolissaint to the quantum setting and provides a connection to the recent work of Brannan. We use these characterisations to show that the Haagerup property is preserved under free products of discrete quantum groups.
We introduce the Haagerup property for twisted groupoid $C^*$-dynamical systems in terms of naturally defined positive-definite operator-valued multipliers. By developing a version of `the Haagerup trick' we prove that this property is equivalent to the Haagerup property of the reduced crossed product $C^*$-algebra with respect to the canonical conditional expectation $E$. This extends a theorem of Dong and Ruan for discrete group actions, and implies that a given Cartan inclusion of separable $C^*$-algebras has the Haagerup property if and only if the associated Weyl groupoid has the Haagerup…
In Chapter 2 of "Groups with the Haagerup Property", Jolissaint gives on the one hand a characterization of the Haagerup property in terms of strongly mixing actions on standard probability spaces; on the other hand he gives a noncommutative analogue of this result in terms of actions on factors. In the recent paper "A new characterization of the Haagerup property by actions on infinite measure spaces", the authors give a characterization of the Haagerup property but this time dealing with $C_0$-actions on infinite measure spaces. Following the spirit of this section, we give a noncommutative …
We introduce the relative Haagerup approximation property for a unital, expected inclusion of arbitrary von Neumann algebras and show that if the smaller algebra is finite then the notion only depends on the inclusion itself, and not on the choice of the conditional expectation. Several variations of the definition are shown to be equivalent in this case, and in particular the approximating maps can be chosen to be unital and preserving the reference state. The concept is then applied to amalgamated free products of von Neumann algebras and used to deduce that the standard Haagerup property fo…
We initiate a study of maximal subgroups and maximal von Neumann subalgebras which have the Haagerup property. We determine maximal Haagerup subgroups inside $\mathbb{Z}^2 \rtimes SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and obtain several explicit instances where maximal Haagerup subgroups yield maximal Haagerup subalgebras. Our techniques are on one hand based on group-theoretic considerations, and on the other on certain results on intermediate von Neumann algebras, in particular these allowing us to deduce that all the intermediate algebras for certain inclusions arise from groups or from group actions. Some rem…
We investigate angles between Haagerup--Schultz projections of operators belonging to finite von Neumann algebras, in connection with a property analogous to Dunford's notion of spectrality of operators. In particular, we show that an operator can be written as the sum of a normal and an s.o.t.-quasinilpotent operator that commute if and only if the angles between its Haagerup--Schultz projections are uniformly bounded away from zero (and we call this the uniformly nonzero anlges property). Moreover, we show that spectrality is equivalent to this uniformly nonzero angles property plus decompos…

We initiate the large scale geometric study of Banach-Lie groups, especially of linear Banach-Lie groups. We show that the exponential length, originally introduced by Ringrose for unitary groups of $C^*$-algebras, defines the quasi-isometry type of any connected Banach-Lie group. As an illustrative example, we consider unitary groups of separable abelian unital $C^*$-algebras with spectrum having finitely many components, which we classify up to topological isomorphism and up to quasi-isometry, in order to highlight the difference. The main results then concern the Haagerup property, and Prop…
We prove that a locally compact group has the approximation property (AP), introduced by Haagerup-Kraus, if and only if a non-commutative Fejér theorem holds for the associated $C^*$- or von Neumann crossed products. As applications, we answer three open problems in the literature. Specifically, we show that any locally compact group with the AP is exact. This generalizes a result by Haagerup-Kraus, and answers a problem raised by Li. We also answer a question of Bédos-Conti on the Fejér property of discrete $C^*$-dynamical systems, as well as a question by Anoussis-Katavolos-Todorov for all l…
We define and study a notion of free wreath product with amalgamation for compact quantum groups. These objects were already introduced in the case of duals of discrete groups under the name "free wreath products of pairs" in a previous work of ours. We give several equivalent descriptions and use them to establish properties like residual finiteness, the Haagerup property or a smash product decomposition.
