We present a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation of a representative volume of the Universe, as part of the Making Galaxies in a Cosmological Context (MaGICC) project. MaGICC uses a thermal implementation for supernova and early stellar feedback. This work tests the feedback model at lower resolution across a range of galaxy masses, morphologies and merger histories. The simulated sample compares well with observations of high redshift galaxies ($z \ge 2$) including the stellar mass - halo mass ($M_\star - M_h$ ) relation, the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function (GSMF) at low masses ($M_\star \lt 5 \times 10^{10} M_\odot$ ) and the number density evolution of low mass galaxies. The poor match of $M_\star - M_h$ and the GSMF at high masses ($M_\star \ge 5 \times 10^{10} M_\odot$ ) indicates supernova feedback is insufficient to limit star formation in these haloes. At $z = 0$, our model produces too many stars in massive galaxies and slightly underpredicts the stellar mass around $L_\star$ mass galaxy. Altogether our results suggest that early stellar feedback, in conjunction with supernovae feedback, plays a major role in regulating the properties of low mass galaxies at high redshift.
Using cosmological galaxy formation simulations from the MaGICC project, spanning more than three magnitudes in stellar mass (~10^7-3x10^{10} Msun), we trace the baryonic cycle of infalling gas from the virial radius through to its participation in the star formation process. An emphasis is placed upon the temporal history of chemical enrichment during its passage through the corona and CGM. We derive the distributions of time between gas crossing the virial radius and being accreted to the star forming region (which allows mixing within the corona), as well as the time between gas being accre…

We develop an extension of subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) capable of accurately reproducing the real and redshift-space clustering of galaxies in a state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulation. Our method uses a low-resolution gravity-only simulation and it includes orphan and tidal disruption prescriptions for satellite galaxies, and a flexible amount of galaxy assembly bias. Furthermore, it includes recipes for star formation rate (SFR) based on the dark matter accretion rate. We test the accuracy of our model against catalogues of stellar-mass- and SFR-selected galaxies in the TNG300 hydro…
We carry out a systematic investigation of the total mass density profile of massive (Mstar~3e11 Msun) early-type galaxies and its dependence on redshift, specifically in the range 0<z<1. We start from a large sample of SDSS early-type galaxies with stellar masses and effective radii measured assuming two different profiles, de Vaucouleurs and Sérsic. We assign dark matter haloes to galaxies via abundance matching relations with standard LCDM profiles and concentrations. We then compute the total, mass-weighted density slope at the effective radius gamma', and study its redshift dependence at …
We investigate the evolution of dust content in galaxies from redshifts z=0 to z=9.5. Using empirically motivated prescriptions, we model galactic-scale properties -- including halo mass, stellar mass, star formation rate, gas mass, and metallicity -- to make predictions for the galactic evolution of dust mass and dust temperature in main sequence galaxies. Our simple analytic model, which predicts that galaxies in the early Universe had greater quantities of dust than their low-redshift counterparts, does a good job at reproducing observed trends between galaxy dust and stellar mass out to z~…

We demonstrate a single-parameter route for reproducing higher mass objects as observed in the LIGO--Virgo mass distribution, using only the isolated binary stellar evolution channel. This single parameter encodes the cosmological mass growth of compact stellar remnants that exceed the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit. Cosmological mass growth appears in known solutions to General Relativity with cosmological boundary conditions. We consider the possibility of solutions with cosmological boundary conditions, which reduce to Kerr on timescales short compared to the Hubble time. We discuss compl…
The nature of galaxy spin is still not fully known. Iye et al (2021) applied a 3D analysis to a dataset of bright SDSS galaxies that was used in the past for photometric analysis. They showed that the distribution of spin directions of spiral galaxies is random, providing a dipole axis with low statistical significance of 0.29$σ$. However, to show random distribution, two decisions were made, each can lead to random distribution regardless of the real distribution of the spin direction of galaxies. The first decision was to limit the dataset arbitrarily to z$<$0.1, which is a redshift range in…
We present the public data release of the Uchuu-UM galaxy catalogues by applying the UniverseMachine algorithm to assign galaxies to the dark matter halos in the Uchuu $N$-body cosmological simulation. It includes a variety of baryonic properties for all galaxies down to $\sim 5\times10^8 M_{\odot}$ with halos in a mass range of $10^{10}<M_{\rm halo}/M_{\odot}<5\times10^{15}$ up to redshift $z=10$. Uchuu-UM includes more than $10^{4}$ cluster-size halos in a volume of $ 8(h^{-1} {\rm Gpc})^3$, reproducing observed stellar mass functions across the redshift range of $z=0-7$, galaxy quenched fra…

We examine the results from the Experiment to Detect the Global Epoch of Reionization Signature (EDGES), which has recently claimed the detection of a strong absorption in the 21 cm hyperfine transition line of neutral hydrogen, at redshifts demarcating the early stages of star formation. More concretely, we study the compatibility of the shape of the EDGES absorption profile, centered at a redshift of $z \sim 17.2$, with measurements of the reionization optical depth, the Gunn-Peterson optical depth, and Lyman-$α$ emission from star-forming galaxies, for a variety of possible reionization mod…
This is the second paper in a series aimed at modeling the black hole (BH) mass function, from the stellar to the (super)massive regime. In the present work we focus on (super)massive BHs and provide an ab-initio computation of their mass function across cosmic times. We consider two main mechanisms to grow the central BH, that are expected to cooperate in the high-redshift star-forming progenitors of local massive galaxies. The first is the gaseous dynamical friction process, that can cause the migration toward the nuclear regions of stellar-mass BHs originated during the intense bursts of st…

Identifying spurious reduction artefacts in galaxy spectra is a challenge for large surveys. We present an algorithm for identifying and repairing residual spurious features in sky-subtracted galaxy spectra with application to the VIPERS survey. The algorithm uses principal component analysis (PCA) applied to the galaxy spectra in the observed frame to identify sky line residuals imprinted at characteristic wavelengths. We further model the galaxy spectra in the rest-frame using PCA to estimate the most probable continuum in the corrupted spectral regions, which are then repaired. We apply the…

Exploiting the full statistical power of future cosmic shear surveys will necessitate improvements to the accuracy with which the gravitational lensing signal is measured. We present a framework for calibrating shear with image simulations that demonstrates the importance of including realistic correlations between galaxy morphology, size and more importantly, photometric redshifts. This realism is essential so that selection and shape measurement biases can be calibrated accurately for a tomographic cosmic shear analysis. We emulate Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) observations of the COSMOS field u…
SubHalo Abundance Matching (SHAM) is an empirical method for constructing galaxy catalogues based on high-resolution $N$-body simulations. We apply SHAM on the UNIT simulation to simulate SDSS BOSS/eBOSS Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) within a wide redshift range of $0.2 < z < 1.0$. Besides the typical SHAM scatter parameter $σ$, we include $v_{\rm smear}$ and $V_{\rm ceil}$ to take into account the redshift uncertainty and the galaxy incompleteness respectively. These two additional parameters are critical for reproducing the observed 2PCF multipoles on 5--25$\,h^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc}$. The redshift …
The calibration and validation of scientific analysis in simulations is a fundamental tool to ensure unbiased and robust results in observational cosmology. In particular, mock galaxy catalogs are a crucial resource to achieve these goals in the measurement of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) in the clustering of galaxies. Here we present a set of 1952 galaxy mock catalogs designed to mimic the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 3 BAO sample over its full photometric redshift range $0.6<z_{\rm photo}<1.1$. The mocks are based upon 488 ICE-COLA fast $N$-body simulations of full-sky light cones and …
Testing predictions of semi-analytic models of galaxy evolution against observations help to understand the complex processes that shape galaxies. We compare predictions from the Garching and Durham models implemented on the Millennium Run with observations of galaxy-galaxy lensing (GGL) and galaxy-galaxy-galaxy lensing (G3L) for various galaxy samples with stellar masses in the range 0.5 < (M_* / 10^10 M_Sun) < 32 and photometric redshift range 0.2 < z < 0.6 in the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS). We find that the predicted GGL and G3L signals are in qualitative agree…
