Let G be a plane graph of girth at least five. We show that if there exists a 3-coloring phi of a cycle C of G that does not extend to a 3-coloring of G, then G has a subgraph H on O(|C|) vertices that also has no 3-coloring extending phi. This is asymptotically best possible and improves a previous bound of Thomassen. In the next paper of the series we will use this result and the attendant theory to prove a generalization to graphs on surfaces with several precolored cycles.

Combined, our work shows that three-coloring a graph with no induced seven-vertex path can be done in polynomial time.

In this paper, we prove that the class of graphs with no triangle and no induced cycle of even length at least 6 has bounded chromatic number. It is well-known that even-hole-free graphs are $χ$-bounded but we allow here the existence of $C_4$. The proof relies on the concept of Parity Changing Path, an adaptation of Trinity Changing Path which was recently introduced by Bonamy, Charbit and Thomassé to prove that graphs with no induced cycle of length divisible by three have bounded chromatic number.
It is proved that triangle-free intersection graphs of $n$ L-shapes in the plane have chromatic number $O(\log\log n)$. This improves the previous bound of $O(\log n)$ (McGuinness, 1996) and matches the known lower bound construction (Pawlik et al., 2013).

Thomassen conjectured that triangle-free planar graphs have exponentially many 3-colorings. Recently, he disproved his conjecture by providing examples of such graphs with $n$ vertices and at most $2^{15n/\log_2 n}$ 3-colorings. We improve his construction, giving examples of such graphs with at most $64^{n^{log_{9/2} 3}}<64^{n^{0.731}}$ 3-colorings. We conjecture this exponent is optimal.

We show that if a coloring of the plane has the properties that any two points at distance one are colored differently and the plane is partitioned into uniformly colored triangles under certain conditions, then it requires at least seven colors. A recent lower bound on the number of edges in a k-critical n-vertex graph by Kostochka and Yancey yields a half-page proof of the celebrated Grötzsch Theorem that every planar triangle-free graph is 3-colorable. In this paper we use the same bound to give short proofs of other known theorems on 3-coloring of planar graphs, among whose is the Grünbaum-Aksenov Theorem that every planar with at most three triangles is 3-colorable. We also prove the new result that every graph obtained from a triangle-free planar graph by adding a vertex of degree at most four is 3-colorable.
For positive integers $n$ and $r$, we consider $n$-vertex graphs with the maximum number of $r$-edge-colorings with no copy of a triangle where exactly two colors appear. We prove that, if $2 \leq r \leq 26$ and $n$ is sufficiently large, the maximum is attained by the bipartite Turán graph $T_2(n)$ on $n$ vertices. This is best possible, as $T_2(n)$ is not extremal for $r \geq 27$ colors and $n \geq 3$.
In the first partial result toward Steinberg's now-disproved three coloring conjecture, Abbott and Zhou used a counting argument to show that every planar graph without cycles of lengths 4 through 11 is 3-colorable. Implicit in their proof is a fact about plane graphs: in any plane graph of minimum degree 3, if no two triangles share an edge, then triangles make up strictly less than 2/3 of the faces. We show how this result, combined with Kostochka and Yancey's resolution of Ore's conjecture for k = 4, implies that every planar graph without cycles of lengths 4 through 8 is 3-colorable.

We study 3-coloring properties of triangle-free planar graphs $G$ with two precolored 4-cycles $C_1$ and $C_2$ that are far apart. We prove that either every precoloring of $C_1\cup C_2$ extends to a 3-coloring of $G$, or $G$ contains one of two special substructures which uniquely determine which 3-colorings of $C_1\cup C_2$ extend. We show that the size of a 4-critical graph of girth at least five is bounded by a linear function of its genus. This strengthens the previous bound on the size of such graphs given by Thomassen. It also serves as the basic case for the description of the structure of 4-critical triangle-free graphs embedded in a fixed surface, presented in a future paper of this series.
We give a randomized algorithm that properly colors the vertices of a triangle-free graph G on n vertices using O(Δ(G)/ log Δ(G)) colors, where Δ(G) is the maximum degree of G. The algorithm takes O(n\Delta2(G)logΔ(G)) time and succeeds with high probability, provided Δ(G) is greater than log^{1+ε}n for a positive constant ε. We study a certain relaxation of the classic vertex coloring problem, namely, a coloring of vertices of undirected, simple graphs, such that there are no monochromatic triangles. We give the first classification of the problem in terms of classic and parametrized algorithms. Several computational complexity results are also presented, which improve on the previous results found in the literature. For a poset P, a subposet A, and an order preserving map F from A into the real numbers, the marked order polytope parametrizes the order preserving extensions of F to P. We show that the function counting integral-valued extensions is a piecewise polynomial in F and we prove a reciprocity statement in terms of order-reversing maps. We apply our results to give a geometric proof of a combinatorial reciprocity for monotone triangles due to Fischer and Riegler (2011) and we consider the enumerative problem of counting extensions of partial graph colorings of Herzberg and Murty (2007).

Let $H$ be a graph with $Δ(H) \leq 2$, and let $G$ be obtained from $H$ by gluing in vertex-disjoint copies of $K_4$. We prove that if $H$ contains at most one odd cycle of length exceeding $3$, or if $H$ contains at most $3$ triangles, then $χ(G) \leq 4$. This proves the Strong Coloring Conjecture for such graphs $H$. For graphs $H$ with $Δ=2$ that are not covered by our theorem, we prove an approximation result towards the conjecture.

Dvořák, Král' and Thomas gave a description of the structure of triangle-free graphs on surfaces with respect to 3-coloring. Their description however contains two substructures (both related to graphs embedded in plane with two precolored cycles) whose coloring properties are not entirely determined. An edge coloring of the $n$-vertex complete graph, $K_n$, is a Gallai coloring if it does not contain any rainbow triangle, that is, a triangle whose edges are colored with three distinct colors. We prove that for $n$ large and every $k$ with $k\le 2^{n/4300}$, the number of Gallai colorings of $K_n$ that use at most $k$ given colors is $(\binom{k}{2}+o_n(1))\,2^{\binom{n}{2}}$. Our result is asymptotically best possible and implies that, for those $k$, almost all Gallai $k$-colorings use only two colors. However, this is not true for $k \ge Ω(2^{2n})$.

A graph drawn in a surface is a near-quadrangulation if the sum of the lengths of the faces different from 4-faces is bounded by a fixed constant. We leverage duality between colorings and flows to design an efficient algorithm for 3-precoloring-extension in near-quadrangulations of orientable surfaces. Furthermore, we use this duality to strengthen previously known sufficient conditions for 3-colorability of triangle-free graphs drawn in orientable surfaces.
