We present the full characterization of phase-randomized or phase-averaged coherent states, a class of states exploited in communication channels and in decoy state-based quantum key distribution protocols. In particular, we report on the suitable formalism to analytically describe the main features of this class of states and on their experimental investigation, that results in agreement with theory. We also show the results we obtained by manipulating the phase-averaged coherent states with linear optical elements and testify their good quality by employing some non-Gaussianity measures and the concept of mutual information.
We consider a relaxation of a single mode of the quantized field in a presence of one- and two-photon absorption and emission processes. Exact stationary solutions of the master equation for the diagonal elements of the density matrix in the Fock basis are found in the case of completely saturated two-photon emission. If two-photon processes dominate over single-photon ones, the stationary state is a mixture of phase averaged even and odd coherent states.
We study the use of squeezed light for qubit coherent control and compare it with the coherent state control field case. We calculate the entanglement between a short pulse of resonant squeezed light and a two-level atom in free space and the resulting operation error. We find that the squeezing phase, the phase of the light field and the atomic superposition phase, all determine whether atom-pulse mode entanglement and the gate error are enhanced or suppressed. However, when averaged over all possible qubit initial states, the gate error would not decrease by a practicably useful amount and w…
Multiple photon subtraction applied to a displaced phase-averaged coherent state, which is a non-Gaussian classical state, produces conditional states with a non trivial (positive) Glauber-Sudarshan $P$-representation. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that, despite its simplicity, this class of conditional states cannot be fully characterized by direct detection of photon numbers. In particular, the non-Gaussianity of the state is a characteristics that must be assessed by phase-sensitive measurements. We also show that the non-Gaussianity of conditional states can be manipulate…
Quantum computers and simulators promise to enable the study of strongly correlated quantum systems. Yet, surprisingly, it is hard for them to compute ground states. They can, however, efficiently compute the dynamics of closed quantum systems. We propose a method to study the quantum thermodynamics of strongly correlated electrons from quantum dynamics. We define time-averaged classical shadows (TACS) and prove it is a classical shadow(CS) of the von Neumann ensemble, the time-averaged density matrix. We then show that the diffusion maps, an unsupervised machine learning algorithm, can effici…
We explore geometric phases of coherent states and some of their properties. A better and elegant expression of geometric phase for coherent state is derived. It is used to obtain the explicit form of the geometric phase for entangled coherent states, several interesting results followed by considering different cases for the parameters. The effects of entanglement and harmonic potential on the geometric phase are discussed.
The Berry phases for coherent states and squeezed coherent states of Landau levels are calculated. Coherent states of Landau levels are interpreted as a result of a magnetic flux moved adiabatically from infinity to a finite place on the plane. The Abelian Berry phase for coherent states of Landau levels is an analog of the Aharonov- Bohm effect. Moreover, the non-Abelian Berry phase is calculated for the adiabatic evolution of the magnetic field B.
The $s$-ordered phase-sum and phase-difference distributions are considered for Bell-like superpositions of two-mode coherent states. The distributions are sensitive, respectively, to the sum and difference of the phases of the entangled coherent states. They show loss of information about the entangled state and may take on negative values for some orderings $s$.
We propose novel coherent-state phase concentration by probabilistic measurement-induced ampli- fication. The amplification scheme uses novel architecture, thermal noise addition (instead of single photon addition) followed by feasible multiple photon subtraction using realistic photon-number resolving detector. It allows to substantially amplify weak coherent states and simultaneously reduce their phase uncertainty, contrary to the deterministic amplifier.
We study phase properties of a displacement operator type nonlinear coherent state. In particular we evaluate the Pegg-Barnett phase distribution and compare it with phase distributions associated with the Husimi Q function and the Wigner function. We also study number- phase squeezing of this state.
We study characteristic aspects of the geometric phase which is associated with the generalized coherent states. This is determined by special orbits in the parameter space defining the coherent state, which is obtained as a solution of the variational equation governed by a simple model Hamiltonian called the "resonant Hamiltonian". Three typical coherent states are considered: SU(2), SU(1,1) and Heisenberg-Weyl. A possible experimental detection of the phases is proposed in such a way that the geometric phases can be discriminated from the dynamical phase.
Polarization coherent states (PCS) are considered as generalized coherent states of $SU(2)_p$ group of the polarization invariance of the light fields. The geometric phases of PCS are introduced in a way, analogous to that used in the classical polarization optics.
Intermediate states interpolating coherent states and Pegg-Barnett phase states are investigated using the ladder operator approach. These states reduce to coherent and Pegg-Barnett phase states in two different limits. Statistical and squeezing properties are studied in detail.
We point out that harmonic oscillator coherent states, in coordinate representation, require particular phase factor, in order to represent classical time evolution properly. The presence of such a phase is clearly stated only in a minority of scientific sources discussing properties of coherent states.
Using coherent phase states, parameterized phase state distributions for a single-mode radiation field are introduced and their integral relation to the phase-parameterized field-strength distributions is studied. The integral kernel is evaluated and the problem of direct sampling of the coherent phase state distributions using balanced homodyne detection is considered. Numerical simulations show that when the value of the smoothing parameter is not too small the coherent phase state distributions can be obtained with sufficiently well accuracy. With decreasing value of the smoothing parameter…
Using the Wigner distribution function, we analyze the behavior on phase space of generalized coherent states associated with the Morse potential (Morse-like coherent states). Within the f-deformed oscillator formalism, such states are constructed by means of the two following definitions: {\it i)} as deformed displacement operator coherent states (DOCSs) and {\it ii)} as deformed photon-added coherent states (DPACSs).
It is generally assumed that on-off detectors with single-photon sensitivity cannot distinguish coherent states from phase-mixed coherent states without some form of quadrature-based tomography. Here, we show that it is theoretically possible to distinguish these states without quadrature-based methods by comparing the vacuum probability of one output port of a variable beam splitter (VBS) that has two different phase-mixed coherent states as its inputs to the well-known case of dual coherent-state inputs. As an application, a method is proposed to test whether a laser field is in a coherent s…
We discuss some basic tools for an analysis of one-dimensionalquantum systems defined on a cyclic coordinate space. The basic features of the generalized coherent states, the complexifier coherent states are reviewed. These states are then used to define the corresponding (quasi)densities in phase space. The properties of these generalized Husimi distributions are discussed, in particular their zeros.Furthermore, the use of the complexifier coherent states for a semiclassical analysis is demonstrated by deriving a semiclassical coherent state propagator in phase space.
Phase operators are constructed using a Klauder-Berezin coherent state quantization in finite Hilbert subspaces of the Hilbert space of Fourier series. The study of infinite dimensional limits of mean values of some observables phase leads towards a simpler convergence to the canonical commutation relations.
We report on a direct measurement of a phase shift on a weak coherent beam by a single Rb-87 atom in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A maximum phase shift of about 1 degree is observed experimentally.
A new technique is demonstrated for carrying out exact positive-P phase-space simulations of the coherent Ising machine quantum computer. By suitable design of the coupling matrix, general hard optimization problems can be solved. Here, computational quantum simulations of a feedback type of photonic parametric network are carried out, which is the implementation of the coherent Ising machine. Results for success rates are obtained using this scalable phase-space algorithm for quantum simulations of quantum feedback devices.
A uniform approximation for the coherent state propagator, valid in the vicinity of phase space caustics, was recently obtained using the Maslov method combined with a dual representation for coherent states. In this paper we review the derivation of this formula and apply it to two model systems: the one-dimensional quartic oscillator and a two-dimensional chaotic system.
We prove the unconditional security of coherent-state-based differential phase shift quantum key distribution protocol (DPSQKD) with block-wise phase randomization. Our proof is based on the conversion of DPSQKD to an equivalent entanglement-distillation protocol where the estimated phase error rate determines the amount of the privacy amplification. The generated final key has a contribution from events where the sender emits two or more photons, indicating the robustness of DPSQKD against photon-number-splitting attacks.
Number state filtered coherent states are a class of nonclassical states obtained by removing one or more number states from a coherent state. Phase sensitivity of an interferometer is enhanced if these nonclassical states are used as input states. The optimal phase sensitivity, which is related to the quantum Cramer-Rao bound (QCRB) for the input state, improves beyond the standard quantum limit. It is argued that removal of more than one suitable number state leads to better phase sensitivity. As an important limiting case in this context, the even and odd coherent states, where the odd and …
We construct semiclassical solutions of the symplectically covariant Schroedinger phase-space equation rigorously studied in a previous paper; we use for this purpose an adaptation of Littlejohn's nearby-orbit method. We take the opportunity to discuss in some detail the so fruitful notion of squeezed coherent state and the action of the metaplectic group on these states.
Unique set of coherent states for the anharmonic oscillator is obtained by requiring i. under the quantum mechanical time evolution a coherent state evolves into another, governed by trajectory in the classical phase space (of a related hamiltonian); ii. the resolution of identity involves exactly the classical phase space measure. The rules are invariant under unitary transformations of the quantum theory and canonical transformations of the classical theory. The states are almost, but not quite, minimal uncertainty wave packets. The construction can be generalized to quantum versions of integ…
The introduction of phase coherence in the detection of quantum noise of light yields a pure quantum measurement of spectral modes. We theoretically show that such coherent quantum measurement performed with the technique of resonator detection (RD) is able to access any direction in the two-mode phase space of spectral sidebands under appropriate conditions, thus furnishing a complete measurement of the four-dimensional Wigner function. We obtain a realistic measurement operator for coherent RD by including the effects of imperfect resonator mode matching in our analysis. Moreover, we experim…
We consider the problem of phase-covariant cloning for coherent states. We show that an experimental scheme based on ideal phase measurement and feedforward outperforms the semiclassical procedure of ideal phase measurement and preparation in terms of fidelity. A realistic scheme where the ideal phase measurement is replaced with double-homodyne detection is shown to be unable to overcome the semiclassical cloning strategy. On the other hand, such a realistic scheme is better than semiclassical cloning based on double-homodyne phase measurement and preparation.
The geometric phases for standard coherent states which are widely used in quantum optics have attracted a large amount of attention. Nevertheless, few physicists consider about the counterparts of non-linear coherent states, which are useful in the description of the motion of a trapped ion. In this paper, the non-unitary and non-cyclic geometric phases for two nonlinear coherent and one squeezed states are formulated respectively. Moreover, some of their common properties are discussed respectively, such as gauge invariance, non-locality and non-linear effects. The non-linear functions have …
We derive the form of the quantum filter equation describing the continuous observation of the phase of a quantum system in an arm of an interferometer via non-demolition measurements when the statistics of an input field used for the indirect measurement are in a general coherent state. Both quadrature homodyne detection and photon-counting dection schemes are covered, and we solve the linearized filter for a specific application.

Rapidly scanning magnetic and optical dipole traps have been widely utilised to form time-averaged potentials for ultracold quantum gas experiments. Here we theoretically and experimentally characterise the dynamic properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in ring-shaped potentials that are formed by scanning an optical dipole beam in a circular trajectory. We find that unidirectional scanning leads to a non-trivial phase profile of the condensate that can be approximated analytically using the concept of phase imprinting. While the phase profile is not accessible through in-trap imaging, time-o…

We present the multifractal analysis of coherent states in kicked top model by expanding them in the basis of Floquet operator eigenstates. We demonstrate the manifestation of phase space structures in the multifractal properties of coherent states. In the classical limit, the classical dynamical map can be constructed, allowing us to explore the corresponding phase space portraits and to calculate Lyapunov exponent. By tuning the kicking strength, the system undergoes a transition from regularity to chaos. We show that the variation of multifractal dimensions of coherent states with kicking s…
By analyzing the probability distributions of the Loschmidt echo (LE) and quantum work, we examine the nonequilibrium effects of a quantum many-body system, which exhibits an excited-state quantum phase transition (ESQPT). We find that depending on the value of the controlling parameter the distribution of the LE displays different patterns. At the critical point of the ESQPT, both the averaged LE and the averaged work show a cusplike shape. Furthermore, by employing the finite-size scaling analysis of the averaged work, we obtain the critical exponent of the ESQPT. Finally, we show that at th…
We show that the geometric phase of the gyro-motion of a classical charged particle in a uniform time-dependent magnetic field described by Newton's equation can be derived from a coherent Berry phase for the coherent states of the Schroedinger equation or the Dirac equation. This correspondence is established by constructing coherent states for a particle using the energy eigenstates on the Landau levels and proving that the coherent states can maintain their status of coherent states during the slow varying of the magnetic field. It is discovered that orbital Berry phases of the eigenstates …
Exact coherent states in the Calogero-Sutherland models (of time-dependent parameters) which describe identical harmonic oscillators interacting through inverse-square potentials are constructed, in terms of the classical solutions of a harmonic oscillator. For quasi-periodic coherent states of the time-periodic systems, geometric phases are evaluated. For the $A_{N-1}$ Calogero-Sutherland model, the phase is calculated for a general coherent state. The phases for other models are also considered.
We cast the phase state as a $SU(1,1)$ nonlinear coherent state to support the idea that the $SU(1,1)$ representation of the electromagnetic field may be helpful in some instances and to bring forward that it may relate to the phase state problem. We also construct nonlinear coherent states related to the exponential phase operator and provide their corresponding nonlinear annihilation operators. Finally, we discuss the propagation of classical fields through arrays of coupled waveguides that are solved through the use of nonlinear coherent states of $SU(1,1)$ or the exponential phase operator…
Phase-squeezed light can enhance the precision of optical phase estimation. The larger the photon numbers are and the stronger the squeezing is, the better the precision will be. We propose an experimental scheme for generating phase-squeezed light pulses with large coherent amplitudes. In our scheme, one arm of a single-photon Mach-Zehnder interferometer interacts with coherent light via a non-linear optical Kerr medium to generate a coherent superposition state. Post-selecting the single photon by properly tuning a variable beam splitter in the interferometer yields a phase-squeezed output.
We consider discrete-alphabet encoding schemes for coherent-state quantum key distribution. The sender encodes the letters of a finite-size alphabet into coherent states whose amplitudes are symmetrically distributed on a circle centered in the origin of the phase space. We study the asymptotic performance of this phase-encoded coherent-state protocol in direct and reverse reconciliation assuming both loss and thermal noise in the communication channel. In particular, we show that using just four phase-shifted coherent states is sufficient for generating secret key rates of the order of $4 \ti…
We experimentally investigate the non-Gaussian features of the phase-randomized coherent states, a class of states exploited in communication channels and in decoy state-based quantum key distribution protocols. In particular, we reconstruct their phase-insensitive Wigner functions and quantify their non-Gaussianity. The measurements are performed in the mesoscopic photon-number domain by means of a direct detection scheme involving linear detectors.
We propose the use of coherent control of a multi-qubit--cavity QED system in order to explore novel phase transition phenomena in a general class of multi-qubit--cavity systems. In addition to atomic systems, the associated super-radiant phase transitions should be observable in a variety of solid-state experimental systems, including the technologically important case of interacting quantum dots coupled to an optical cavity mode.
We report phase-coherent Doppler detection of optical dipole forces using large ion crystals in a Penning trap. The technique is based on laser Doppler velocimetry using a cycling transition in $^{9}$Be$^{+}$ near 313 nm and the center-of-mass (COM) ion motional mode. The optical dipole force is tuned to excite the COM mode, and measurements of photon arrival times synchronized with the excitation potential show oscillations with a period commensurate with the COM motional frequency. Experimental results compare well with a quantitative model for a driven harmonic oscillator. This technique pe…
Quantum versions of cylindric phase space, like for the motion of a particle on the circle, are obtained through different families of coherent states. The latter are built from various probability distributions of the action variable. The method is illustrated with Gaussian distributions and uniform distributions on intervals, and resulting quantizations are explored.
A novel quantum interference effect in disordered quasi-one-dimensional rings in the inhomogeneous magnetic field is reported. We calculate the canonical disorder averaged persistent current using the diagrammatic perturbation theory. It is shown that within the adiabatic regime the average current oscillates as a function of the geometric flux which is related to the Berry phase and the period becomes half the value of the case of a single one-dimensional ring. We also discuss the magnetic dephasing effect on the averaged current.
We first compare the geometric frameworks behind the Uhlmann and Berry phases in a fiber-bundle language and then evaluate the Uhlmann phases of bosonic and fermionic coherent states. The Uhlmann phases of both coherent states are shown to carry geometric information and decrease smoothly with temperature. Importantly, the Uhlmann phases approach the corresponding Berry phases as temperature decreases. Together with previous examples in the literature, we propose a correspondence between the Uhlmann and Berry phases in the zero-temperature limit as a general property except some special cases …
