Linear wavelet density estimators are wavelet projections of the empirical measure based on independent, identically distributed observations. We study here the law of the iterated logarithm (LIL) and a Berry-Esseen type theorem. These results are proved under different assumptions on the density $f$ that are different from those needed for similar results in the case of convolution kernels (KDE): whereas the smoothness requirements are much less stringent than for the KDE, Riemann integrability assumptions are needed in order to compute the asymptotic variance, which gives the scaling constant in LIL. To study the Berry-Esseen type theorem, a rate of convergence result in the martingale CLT is used.
Let $\{X_n: n\in \N\}$ be a linear process with density function $f(x)\in L^2(\R)$. We study wavelet density estimation of $f(x)$. Under some regular conditions on the characteristic function of innovations, we achieve, based on the number of nonzero coefficients in the linear process, the minimax optimal convergence rate of the integrated mean squared error of density estimation. Considered wavelets have compact support and are twice continuously differentiable. The number of vanishing moments of mother wavelet is proportional to the number of nonzero coefficients in the linear process and to…
We consider the problem of estimating the density of observations taking values in classical or nonclassical spaces such as manifolds and more general metric spaces. Our setting is quite general but also sufficiently rich in allowing the development of smooth functional calculus with well localized spectral kernels, Besov regularity spaces, and wavelet type systems. Kernel and both linear and nonlinear wavelet density estimators are introduced and studied. Convergence rates for these estimators are established, which are analogous to the existing results in the classical setting of real-valued…
We construct an adaptive wavelet estimator that attains minimax near-optimal rates in a wide range of Besov balls. The convergence rates are affected only by the weakest dependence amongst the channels, and take into account both noise sources.
Multivariate processes with long-range dependence properties can be encountered in many fields of application. Two fundamental characteristics in such frameworks are long-range dependence parameters and correlations between component time series. We consider multivariate long-range dependent linear processes, not necessarily Gaussian. We show that the covariances between the wavelet coefficients in this setting are asymptotically Gaussian. We also study the asymptotic distributions of the estimators of the long-range dependence parameter and the long-run covariance by a wavelet-based Whittle p…
We study the performances of an adaptive procedure based on a convex combination, with data-driven weights, of term-by-term thresholded wavelet estimators. For the bounded regression model, with random uniform design, and the nonparametric density model, we show that the resulting estimator is optimal in the minimax sense over all Besov balls under the $L^2$ risk, without any logarithm factor.
This work is intended as a contribution to a wavelet-based adaptive estimator of the memory parameter in the classical semi-parametric framework for Gaussian stationary processes. In particular we introduce and develop the choice of a data-driven optimal bandwidth. Moreover, we establish a central limit theorem for the estimator of the memory parameter with the minimax rate of convergence (up to a logarithm factor). The quality of the estimators are attested by simulations.
We consider linear processes, not necessarily Gaussian, with long, short or negative memory. The memory parameter is estimated semi-parametrically using wavelets from a sample $X_1,...,X_n$ of the process. We treat both the log-regression wavelet estimator and the wavelet Whittle estimator. We show that these estimators are asymptotically normal as the sample size $n\to\infty$ and we obtain an explicit expression for the limit variance. These results are derived from a general result on the asymptotic normality of the empirical scalogram for linear processes, conveniently centered and normaliz…
We consider a time series $X=\{X_k, k\in\mathbb{Z}\}$ with memory parameter $d\in\mathbb{R}$. This time series is either stationary or can be made stationary after differencing a finite number of times. We study the "Local Whittle Wavelet Estimator" of the memory parameter $d$. This is a wavelet-based semiparametric pseudo-likelihood maximum method estimator. The estimator may depend on a given finite range of scales or on a range which becomes infinite with the sample size. We show that the estimator is consistent and rate optimal if $X$ is a linear process and is asymptotically normal if $X$…
In this paper, we investigate the almost sure convergence, in supremum norm, of the rank-based linear wavelet estimator for a multivariate copula density. Based on empirical process tools, we prove a uniform limit law for the deviation, from its expectation, of an oracle estimator (obtained for known margins), from which we derive the exact convergence rate of the rank-based linear estimator. This rate reveals to be optimal in a minimax sense over Besov balls for the supremum norm loss, whenever the resolution level is suitably chosen.
We propose a wavelet-based approach to construct consistent estimators of the pointwise Hölder exponent of a multifractional Brownian motion, in the case where this underlying process is not directly observed. The relative merits of our estimator are discussed, and we introduce an application to the problem of estimating the functional parameter of a nonlinear model.
This paper considers the nonparametric regression model with negatively super-additive dependent (NSD) noise and investigates the convergence rates of thresholding estimators. It is shown that the term-by-term thresholding estimator achieves nearly optimal and the block thresholding estimator attains optimal (or nearly optimal) convergence rates over Besov spaces. Additionally, some numerical simulations are implemented to substantiate the validity and adaptivity of the thresholding estimators with the presence of NSD noise.
This paper is first devoted to study an adaptive wavelet based estimator of the long memory parameter for linear processes in a general semi-parametric frame. This is an extension of Bardet {\it et al.} (2008) which only concerned Gaussian processes. Moreover, the definition of the long memory parameter estimator is modified and asymptotic results are improved even in the Gaussian case. Finally an adaptive goodness-of-fit test is also built and easy to be employed: it is a chi-square type test. Simulations confirm the interesting properties of consistency and robustness of the adaptive estimat…
Operator fractional Brownian motion (OFBM) is the natural vector-valued extension of the univariate fractional Brownian motion. Instead of a scalar parameter, the law of an OFBM scales according to a Hurst matrix that affects every component of the process. In this paper, we develop the wavelet analysis of OFBM, as well as a new estimator for the Hurst matrix of bivariate OFBM. For OFBM, the univariate-inspired approach of analyzing the entry-wise behavior of the wavelet spectrum as a function of the (wavelet) scales is fraught with difficulties stemming from mixtures of power laws. The propos…
In the present paper, we derive lower bounds for the risk of the nonparametric empirical Bayes estimators. In order to attain the optimal convergence rate, we propose generalization of the linear empirical Bayes estimation method which takes advantage of the flexibility of the wavelet techniques. We present an empirical Bayes estimator as a wavelet series expansion and estimate coefficients by minimizing the prior risk of the estimator. As a result, estimation of wavelet coefficients requires solution of a well-posed low-dimensional sparse system of linear equations. The dimension of the syste…
In this paper we deal with the regression problem in a random design setting. We investigate asymptotic optimality under minimax point of view of various Bayesian rules based on warped wavelets and show that they nearly attain optimal minimax rates of convergence over the Besov smoothness class considered. Warped wavelets have been introduced recently, they offer very good computable and easy-to-implement properties while being well adapted to the statistical problem at hand. We particularly put emphasis on Bayesian rules leaning on small and large variance Gaussian priors and discuss their si…
Many statistical practices involve choosing between a full model and reduced models where some coefficients are reduced to zero. Data were used to select a model with estimated coefficients. Is it possible to do so and still come up with an estimator always better than the traditional estimator based on the full model? The James-Stein estimator is such an estimator, having a property called minimaxity. However, the estimator considers only one reduced model, namely the origin. Hence it reduces no coefficient estimator to zero or every coefficient estimator to zero. In many applications includi…
In this paper, we study robust estimators of the memory parameter d of a (possibly) non stationary Gaussian time series with generalized spectral density f. This generalized spectral density is characterized by the memory parameter d and by a function f* which specifies the short-range dependence structure of the process. Our setting is semi-parametric since both f* and d are unknown and d is the only parameter of interest. The memory parameter d is estimated by regressing the logarithm of the estimated variance of the wavelet coefficients at different scales. The two estimators of d that we c…
We construct an adaptive estimator of a density function on $d$ dimensional unit sphere $S^d$ ($d \geq 2 $), using a new type of spherical frames. The frames, or as we call them, stereografic wavelets are obtained by transforming a wavelet system, namely Daubechies, using some stereographic operators. We prove that our estimator achieves an optimal rate of convergence on some Besov type class of functions by adapting to unknown smoothness. Our new construction of stereografic wavelet system gives us a multiresolution approximation of $L^2(S^d)$ which can be used in many approximation and estim…
We propose a wavelet-based technique for the nonparametric estimation of functions contaminated with noise whose mean and variance are linked via a possibly unknown variance function. Our method, termed the data-driven wavelet-Fisz technique, consists of estimating the variance function via a Nadaraya-Watson estimator, and then performing a wavelet thresholding procedure which uses the estimated variance function and local means of the data to set the thresholds at a suitable level. We demonstrate the mean-square near-optimality of our wavelet estimator over the usual range of Besov classes. T…
We consider the statistical deconvolution problem where one observes $n$ replications from the model $Y=X+ε$, where $X$ is the unobserved random signal of interest and $ε$ is an independent random error with distribution $ϕ$. Under weak assumptions on the decay of the Fourier transform of $ϕ,$ we derive upper bounds for the finite-sample sup-norm risk of wavelet deconvolution density estimators $f_n$ for the density $f$ of $X$, where $f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}$ is assumed to be bounded. We then derive lower bounds for the minimax sup-norm risk over Besov balls in this estimation problem and s…
There have been a number of papers written on semi-parametric estimation methods of the long-memory exponent of a time series, some applied, others theoretical. Some using Fourier methods, others using a wavelet-based technique. In this paper, we compare the Fourier and wavelet approaches to the local regression method and to the local Whittle method. We provide an overview of these methods, describe what has been done, indicate the available results and the conditions under which they hold. We discuss their relative strengths and weaknesses both from a practical and a theoretical perspective.…
The aim of this paper is to show the usefulness of Meyer wavelets for the classical problem of density estimation and for density deconvolution from noisy observations. By using such wavelets, the computation of the empirical wavelet coefficients relies on the fast Fourier transform of the data and on the fact that Meyer wavelets are band-limited functions. This makes such estimators very simple to compute and this avoids the problem of evaluating wavelets at non-dyadic points which is the main drawback of classical wavelet-based density estimators. Our approach is based on term-by-term thresh…
In this paper, we study the problem of adaptive estimation of the spectral density of a stationary Gaussian process. For this purpose, we consider a wavelet-based method which combines the ideas of wavelet approximation and estimation by information projection in order to warrants that the solution is a nonnegative function. The spectral density of the process is estimated by projecting the wavelet thresholding expansion of the periodogram onto a family of exponential functions. This ensures that the spectral density estimator is a strictly positive function. Then, by Bochner's theorem, the co…
In the present paper, we consider the estimation of a periodic two-dimensional function $f(\cdot,\cdot)$ based on observations from its noisy convolution, and convolution kernel $g(\cdot,\cdot)$ unknown. We derive the minimax lower bounds for the mean squared error assuming that $f$ belongs to certain Besov space and the kernel function $g$ satisfies some smoothness properties. We construct an adaptive hard-thresholding wavelet estimator that is asymptotically near-optimal within a logarithmic factor in a wide range of Besov balls. The proposed estimation algorithm implements a truncation to e…
Let $(X_i)_{i\geq 1}$ be an i.i.d. sample on $\RRR^d$ having density $f$. Given a real function $ϕ$ on $\RRR^d$ with finite variation and given an integer valued sequence $(j_n)$, let $\fn$ denote the estimator of $f$ by wavelet projection based on $ϕ$ and with multiresolution level equal to $j_n$. We provide exact rates of almost sure convergence to 0 of the quantity $\sup_{x\in H}\mid \fn(x)-\EEE(\fn)(x)\mid$, when $n2^{-dj_n}/\log n \rar \infty$ and $H$ is a given hypercube of $\RRR^d$. We then show that, if $n2^{-dj_n}/\log n \rar c$ for a constant $c>0$, then the quantity $\sup_{x\in H}\m…
Nonparametric density estimators are studied for $d$-dimensional, strongly spatial mixing data which is defined on a general $N$-dimensional lattice structure. We consider linear and nonlinear hard thresholded wavelet estimators which are derived from a $d$-dimensional multiresolution analysis. We give sufficient criteria for the consistency of these estimators and derive rates of convergence in $L^{p'}$ for $p'\in [1,\infty)$. For this reason, we study density functions which are elements of a $d$-dimensional Besov space $B^s_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We also verify the analytic correctness of ou…
We investigate the posterior rate of convergence for wavelet shrinkage using a Bayesian approach in general Besov spaces. Instead of studying the Bayesian estimator related to a particular loss function, we focus on the posterior distribution itself from a nonparametric Bayesian asymptotics point of view and study its rate of convergence. We obtain the same rate as in \citet{abramovich04} where the authors studied the convergence of several Bayesian estimators.
Linear fractional stable motion, denoted by $\{X_{H,\al}(t)\}_{t\in \R}$, is one of the most classical stable processes; it depends on two parameters $H\in (0,1)$ and $\al\in (0,2)$. The parameter $H$ characterizes the self-similarity property of $\{X_{H,\al}(t)\}_{t\in \R}$ while the parameter $\al$ governs the tail heaviness of its finite dimensional distributions; throughout our article we assume that the latter distributions are symmetric, that $H>1/\al$ and that $H$ is known. We show that, on the interval $[0,1]$, the asymptotic behaviour of the maximum, at a given scale $j$, of absolute …
In this contribution, we extend the methodology proposed in Abry and Didier (2017) to obtain the first joint estimator of the real parts of the Hurst eigenvalues of $n$-variate OFBM. The procedure consists of a wavelet regression on the log-eigenvalues of the sample wavelet spectrum. The estimator is shown to be consistent for any time reversible OFBM and, under stronger assumptions, also asymptotically normal starting from either continuous or discrete time measurements. Simulation studies establish the finite sample effectiveness of the methodology and illustrate its benefits compared to uni…
In this paper, we introduce a wavelet-based method for estimating the EDR space in Li's semiparametric regression model for achieving dimension reduction. This method is obtained by using linear wavelet estimators of the density and regression functions that are involved in the covariance matrix of conditional expectation whose spectral analysis gives the EDR directions. Then, consistency of the proposed estimators is proved. A simulation study that allow one to evaluate the performance of the proposal with comparison to existing methods is presented.
In many statistical problems, stochastic signals can be represented as a sequence of noisy wavelet coefficients. In this paper, we develop general empirical Bayes methods for the estimation of true signal. Our estimators approximate certain oracle separable rules and achieve adaptation to ideal risks and exact minimax risks in broad collections of classes of signals. In particular, our estimators are uniformly adaptive to the minimum risk of separable estimators and the exact minimax risks simultaneously in Besov balls of all smoothness and shape indices, and they are uniformly superefficient …
Wavelet estimators for a probability density f enjoy many good properties, however they are not "shape-preserving" in the sense that the final estimate may not be non-negative or integrate to unity. A solution to negativity issues may be to estimate first the square-root of f and then square this estimate up. This paper proposes and investigates such an estimation scheme, generalising to higher dimensions some previous constructions which are valid only in one dimension. The estimation is mainly based on nearest-neighbour-balls. The theoretical properties of the proposed estimator are obtained…
Let $p_n(y)=\sum_k\hatα_kϕ(y-k)+\sum_{l=0}^{j_n-1}\sum_k\hat β_{lk}2^{l/2}ψ(2^ly-k)$ be the linear wavelet density estimator, where $ϕ$, $ψ$ are a father and a mother wavelet (with compact support), $\hatα_k$, $\hatβ_{lk}$ are the empirical wavelet coefficients based on an i.i.d. sample of random variables distributed according to a density $p_0$ on $\mathbb{R}$, and $j_n\in\mathbb{Z}$, $j_n\nearrow\infty$. Several uniform limit theorems are proved: First, the almost sure rate of convergence of $\sup_{y\in\mathbb{R}}|p_n(y)-Ep_n(y)|$ is obtained, and a law of the logarithm for a suitably scale…
This paper considers the problem of estimating probability density functions on the rotation group $SO(3)$. Two distinct approaches are proposed, one based on characteristic functions and the other on wavelets using the heat kernel. Expressions are derived for their Mean Integrated Squared Errors. The performance of the estimators is studied numerically and compared with the performance of an existing technique using the De La Vallée Poussin kernel estimator. The heat-kernel wavelet approach appears to offer the best convergence, with faster convergence to the optimal bound and guaranteed posi…
We introduce a wavelet-based model of local stationarity. This model enlarges the class of locally stationary wavelet processes and contains processes whose spectral density function may change very suddenly in time. A notion of time-varying wavelet spectrum is uniquely defined as a wavelet-type transform of the autocovariance function with respect to so-called autocorrelation wavelets. This leads to a natural representation of the autocovariance which is localized on scales. We propose a pointwise adaptive estimator of the time-varying spectrum. The behavior of the estimator studied in homoge…
We consider the problem of estimating the unknown response function in the Gaussian white noise model. We first utilize the recently developed Bayesian maximum a posteriori "testimation" procedure of Abramovich et al. (2007) for recovering an unknown high-dimensional Gaussian mean vector. The existing results for its upper error bounds over various sparse $l_p$-balls are extended to more general cases. We show that, for a properly chosen prior on the number of non-zero entries of the mean vector, the corresponding adaptive estimator is simultaneously asymptotically minimax in a wide range of s…
In this paper we study the theoretical properties of the deflation-based FastICA method, the original symmetric FastICA method, and a modified symmetric FastICA method, here called the squared symmetric FastICA. This modification is obtained by replacing the absolute values in the FastICA objective function by their squares. In the deflation-based case this replacement has no effect on the estimate since the maximization problem stays the same. However, in the symmetric case a novel estimate with unknown properties is obtained. In the paper we review the classic deflation-based and symmetric F…
We consider the regression model with (known) random design. We investigate the minimax performances of an adaptive wavelet block thresholding estimator under the $\mathbb{L}^p$ risk with $p\ge 2$ over Besov balls. We prove that it is near optimal and that it achieves better rates of convergence than the conventional term-by-term estimators (hard, soft,...).
We observe $n$ heteroscedastic stochastic processes $\{Y_v(t)\}_{v}$, where for any $v\in\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and $t \in [0,1]$, $Y_v(t)$ is the convolution product of an unknown function $f$ and a known blurring function $g_v$ corrupted by Gaussian noise. Under an ordinary smoothness assumption on $g_1,\ldots,g_n$, our goal is to estimate the $d$-th derivatives (in weak sense) of $f$ from the observations. We propose an adaptive estimator based on wavelet block thresholding, namely the "BlockJS estimator". Taking the mean integrated squared error (MISE), our main theoretical result investigates th…
We study the nonparametric estimation of the jump density of a compound Poisson process from the discrete observation of one trajectory over $[0,T]$. We consider the microscopic regime when the sampling rate $Δ=Δ_T\rightarrow0$ as $T\rightarrow\infty$. We propose an adaptive wavelet threshold density estimator and study its performance for the $L_p$ loss, $p\geq 1$, over Besov spaces. The main novelty is that we achieve minimax rates of convergence for sampling rates $Δ_T$ that vanish with $T$ at arbitrary polynomial rates. More precicely, our estimator attains minimax rates of convergence pro…
The benefits of the wavelet approach for density estimation are well established in the literature, especially when the density to estimate is irregular or heterogeneous in smoothness. However, wavelet density estimates are typically not bona fide densities. In Aya-Moreno et al (2018), a `shape-preserving' wavelet density estimator was introduced, including as main step the estimation of the square-root of the density. A natural concept involving square-root of densities is the Hellinger distance - or equivalently, the Bhattacharyya affinity coefficient. In this paper, we deliver a fully data-…
Bernstein estimators are well-known to avoid the boundary bias problem of traditional kernel estimators. The theoretical properties of these estimators have been studied extensively on compact intervals and hypercubes, but never on the simplex, except for the mean squared error of the density estimator in Tenbusch (1994) when $d = 2$. The simplex is an important case as it is the natural domain of compositional data. In this paper, we make an effort to prove several asymptotic results (bias, variance, mean squared error (MSE), mean integrated squared error (MISE), asymptotic normality, uniform…
S&P 500 index data sampled at one-minute intervals over the course of 11.5 years (January 1989- May 2000) is analyzed, and in particular the Hurst parameter over segments of stationarity (the time period over which the Hurst parameter is almost constant) is estimated. An asymptotically unbiased and efficient estimator using the log-scale spectrum is employed. The estimator is asymptotically Gaussian and the variance of the estimate that is obtained from a data segment of $N$ points is of order $\frac{1}{N}$. Wavelet analysis is tailor made for the high frequency data set, since it has low comp…
The linear minimum mean squared error (LMMSE) estimator is the best linear estimator for a Bayesian linear inverse problem with respect to the mean squared error. It arises as the solution operator to a Tikhonov-type regularized inverse problem with a particular quadratic discrepancy term and a particular quadratic regularization operator. To be able to evaluate the LMMSE estimator, one must know the forward operator and the first two statistical moments of both the prior and the noise. If such knowledge is not available, one may approximate the LMMSE estimator based on given samples. In this …
A data-driven block thresholding procedure for wavelet regression is proposed and its theoretical and numerical properties are investigated. The procedure empirically chooses the block size and threshold level at each resolution level by minimizing Stein's unbiased risk estimate. The estimator is sharp adaptive over a class of Besov bodies and achieves simultaneously within a small constant factor of the minimax risk over a wide collection of Besov Bodies including both the ``dense'' and ``sparse'' cases. The procedure is easy to implement. Numerical results show that it has superior finite sa…
Given an i.i.d. sample from a distribution $F$ on $\mathbb{R}$ with uniformly continuous density $p_0$, purely data-driven estimators are constructed that efficiently estimate $F$ in sup-norm loss and simultaneously estimate $p_0$ at the best possible rate of convergence over Hölder balls, also in sup-norm loss. The estimators are obtained by applying a model selection procedure close to Lepski's method with random thresholds to projections of the empirical measure onto spaces spanned by wavelets or $B$-splines. The random thresholds are based on suprema of Rademacher processes indexed by wave…
We propose an ICA contrast based on the density estimation of the observed signal and its marginals by means of wavelets. The risk of the associated moment estimator is linked with approximation properties in Besov spaces. It is shown to converge faster than the at least expected minimax rate carried over from the underlying density estimations. Numerical simulations performed on some common types of densities yield very competitive results, with a high sensitivity to small departures from independence.
In the multidimensional setting, we consider the errors-in-variables model. We aim at estimating the unknown nonparametric multivariate regression function with errors in the covariates. We devise an adaptive estimator based on projection kernels on wavelets and a deconvolution operator. We propose an automatic and fully data driven procedure to select the wavelet level resolution. We obtain an oracle inequality and optimal rates of convergence over anisotropic H{ö}lder classes. Our theoretical results are illustrated by some simulations.
An empirical best linear unbiased prediction (EBLUP) estimator is utilized for efficient inference in small-area estimation. To measure its uncertainty, we need to estimate its mean squared error (MSE) since the true MSE cannot generally be derived in a closed form. The "naive MSE estimator", one of the estimators available for small-area inference, is unlikely to be chosen, since it does not achieve the desired asymptotic property, namely second-order unbiasedness, although it maintains strict positivity and tractability. Therefore, users tend to choose the second-order unbiased MSE estimator…
Consider nonparametric function estimation under $L^p$-loss. The minimax rate for estimation of the regression function over a Hölder ball with smoothness index $β$ is $n^{-β/(2β+1)}$ if $1\leq p<\infty$ and $(n/\log n)^{-β/(2β+1)}$ if $p=\infty.$ There are many known procedures that either attain this rate for $p=\infty$ but are suboptimal by a $\log n$ factor in the case $p<\infty$ or the other way around. In this article, we construct an estimator that simultaneously achieves the optimal rates under $L^p$-risk for all $1\leq p\leq \infty$ without prior knowledge of $β.$ In contrast to class…
Independent component analysis (ICA) is linked up with the problem of estimating a non linear functional of a density, for which optimal estimators are well known. The precision of ICA is analyzed from the viewpoint of functional spaces in the wavelet framework. In particular, it is shown that, under Besov smoothness conditions, parametric rate of convergence is achieved by a U-statistic estimator of the wavelet ICA contrast, while the previously introduced plug-in estimator $\hat C^2\_j$, with moderate computational cost, has a rate in $n^{-4s\over 4s+d}$.
In numerous applications data are observed at random times and an estimated graph of the spectral density may be relevant for characterizing and explaining phenomena. By using a wavelet analysis, one derives a nonparametric estimator of the spectral density of a Gaussian process with stationary increments (or a stationary Gaussian process) from the observation of one path at random discrete times. For every positive frequency, this estimator is proved to satisfy a central limit theorem with a convergence rate depending on the roughness of the process and the moment of random durations between …
Strong consistency of the Bayes estimator of a regression curve for the $L^1$-squared loss function is proved. It is also shown the convergence to 0 of the Bayes risk of this estimator both for the $L^1$ and $L^1$-squared loss functions. The Bayes estimator of a regression curve is the regression curve with respect to the posterior predictive distribution.
We consider the problem of estimating the s-th derivative of a density function f by the tilted Kernel estimator introduced in Hall and Doosti (2012). Then we further show this estimator achieves the same convergence rate, in probability, the wavelet estimators achieved as shown in Hall and Patil (1995).
We consider a wavelet thresholding approach to adaptive variance function estimation in heteroscedastic nonparametric regression. A data-driven estimator is constructed by applying wavelet thresholding to the squared first-order differences of the observations. We show that the variance function estimator is nearly optimally adaptive to the smoothness of both the mean and variance functions. The estimator is shown to achieve the optimal adaptive rate of convergence under the pointwise squared error simultaneously over a range of smoothness classes. The estimator is also adaptively within a log…
