This paper is first devoted to study an adaptive wavelet based estimator of the long memory parameter for linear processes in a general semi-parametric frame. This is an extension of Bardet {\it et al.} (2008) which only concerned Gaussian processes. Moreover, the definition of the long memory parameter estimator is modified and asymptotic results are improved even in the Gaussian case. Finally an adaptive goodness-of-fit test is also built and easy to be employed: it is a chi-square type test. Simulations confirm the interesting properties of consistency and robustness of the adaptive estimator and test.
Traditionally, the Dirichlet-multinomial distribution has been recognized as a key model for contingency tables generated by cluster sampling schemes. There are, however, other possible distributions appropriate for these contingency tables. This paper introduces new test-statistics capable to test log-linear modeling hypotheses with no distributional specification, when the individuals of the clusters are possibly homogeneously correlated. The estimator for the intracluster correlation coefficient proposed in Alonso-Revenga et al. (2016), valid for different cluster sizes, plays a crucial rol…
The increment ratio (IR) statistic was first defined and studied in Surgailis {\it et al.} (2007) for estimating the memory parameter either of a stationary or an increment stationary Gaussian process. Here three extensions are proposed in the case of stationary processes. Firstly, a multidimensional central limit theorem is established for a vector composed by several IR statistics. Secondly, a goodness-of-fit $χ^2$-type test can be deduced from this theorem. Finally, this theorem allows to construct adaptive versions of the estimator and test which are studied in a general semiparametric fra…
In quantitative finance, we often fit a parametric semimartingale model to asset prices. To ensure our model is correct, we must then perform goodness-of-fit tests. In this paper, we give a new goodness-of-fit test for volatility-like processes, which is easily applied to a variety of semimartingale models. In each case, we reduce the problem to the detection of a semimartingale observed under noise. In this setting, we then describe a wavelet-thresholding test, which obtains adaptive and near-optimal detection rates.
In this article, the weighted empirical likelihood is applied to a general setting of two-sample semiparametric models, which includes biased sampling models and case-control logistic regression models as special cases. For various types of censored data, such as right censored data, doubly censored data, interval censored data and partly interval-censored data, the weighted empirical likelihood-based semiparametric maximum likelihood estimator $(\tildeθ_n,\tilde{F}_n)$ for the underlying parameter $θ_0$ and distribution $F_0$ is derived, and the strong consistency of $(\tildeθ_n,\tilde{F}_n)$…
There exist a number of tests for assessing the nonparametric heteroscedastic location-scale assumption. Here we consider a goodness-of-fit test for the more general hypothesis of the validity of this model under a parametric functional transformation on the response variable. Specifically we consider testing for independence between the regressors and the errors in a model where the transformed response is just a location/scale shift of the error. Our criteria use the familiar factorization property of the joint characteristic function of the covariates under independence. The difficulty is t…
We introduce a new framework for constructing tests of general semiparametric hypotheses which have nontrivial power on the $n^{-1/2}$ scale in every direction, and can be tailored to put substantial power on alternatives of importance. The approach is based on combining test statistics based on stochastic processes of score statistics with bootstrap critical values.
Multivariate processes with long-range dependent properties are found in a large number of applications including finance, geophysics and neuroscience. For real data applications, the correlation between time series is crucial. Usual estimations of correlation can be highly biased due to phase-shifts caused by the differences in the properties of autocorrelation in the processes. To address this issue, we introduce a semiparametric estimation of multivariate long-range dependent processes. The parameters of interest in the model are the vector of the long-range dependence parameters and the lo…
A mixed Gaussian fractional process $\{Y(t)\}_{t \in {\Bbb R}} = \{PX(t)\}_{t \in {\Bbb R}}$ is a multivariate stochastic process obtained by pre-multiplying a vector of independent, Gaussian fractional process entries $X$ by a nonsingular matrix $P$. It is interpreted that $Y$ is observable, while $X$ is a hidden process occurring in an (unknown) system of coordinates $P$. Mixed processes naturally arise as approximations to solutions of physically relevant classes of multivariate fractional SDEs under aggregation. We propose a semiparametric two-step wavelet-based method for estimating both …
There exists a wide literature on modelling strongly dependent time series using a longmemory parameter d, including more recent work on semiparametric wavelet estimation. As a generalization of these latter approaches, in this work we allow the long-memory parameter d to be varying over time. We embed our approach into the framework of locally stationary processes. We show weak consistency and a central limit theorem for our log-regression wavelet estimator of the time-dependent d in a Gaussian context. Both simulations and a real data example complete our work on providing a fairly general a…
In this paper, we introduce a wavelet-based method for estimating the EDR space in Li's semiparametric regression model for achieving dimension reduction. This method is obtained by using linear wavelet estimators of the density and regression functions that are involved in the covariance matrix of conditional expectation whose spectral analysis gives the EDR directions. Then, consistency of the proposed estimators is proved. A simulation study that allow one to evaluate the performance of the proposal with comparison to existing methods is presented.
We study nonparametric estimation of the diffusion coefficient from discrete data, when the observations are blurred by additional noise. Such issues have been developed over the last 10 years in several application fields and in particular in high frequency financial data modelling, however mainly from a parametric and semiparametric point of view. This paper addresses the nonparametric estimation of the path of the (possibly stochastic) diffusion coefficient in a relatively general setting. By developing pre-averaging techniques combined with wavelet thresholding, we construct adaptive estim…
Parameter shrinkage applied optimally can always reduce error and projection variances from those of maximum likelihood estimation. Many variables that actuaries use are on numerical scales, like age or year, which require parameters at each point. Rather than shrinking these towards zero, nearby parameters are better shrunk towards each other. Semiparametric regression is a statistical discipline for building curves across parameter classes using shrinkage methodology. It is similar to but more parsimonious than cubic splines. We introduce it in the context of Bayesian shrinkage and apply it …
Given an i.i.d. sample $\{(X_i,Y_i)\}_{i \in \{1 \ldots n\}}$ from the random design regression model $Y = f(X) + ε$ with $(X,Y) \in [0,1] \times [-M,M]$, in this paper we consider the problem of testing the (simple) null hypothesis $f = f_0$, against the alternative $f \neq f_0$ for a fixed $f_0 \in L^2([0,1],G_X)$, where $G_X(\cdot)$ denotes the marginal distribution of the design variable $X$. The procedure proposed is an adaptation to the regression setting of a multiple testing technique introduced by Fromont and Laurent (2005), and it amounts to consider a suitable collection of unbiased…
"For how many days during the past 30 days was your mental health not good?" The responses to this question measure self-reported mental health and can be linked to important covariates in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). However, these count variables present major distributional challenges: the data are overdispersed, zero-inflated, bounded by 30, and heaped in five- and seven-day increments. To meet these challenges, we design a semiparametric estimation and inference framework for count data regression. The data-generating process is defined by simultaneously …
In partially linear single-index models, we obtain the semiparametrically efficient profile least-squares estimators of regression coefficients. We also employ the smoothly clipped absolute deviation penalty (SCAD) approach to simultaneously select variables and estimate regression coefficients. We show that the resulting SCAD estimators are consistent and possess the oracle property. Subsequently, we demonstrate that a proposed tuning parameter selector, BIC, identifies the true model consistently. Finally, we develop a linear hypothesis test for the parametric coefficients and a goodness-of-…
Suppose we are interested in the mean of an outcome variable missing not at random. Suppose however that one has available a fully observed shadow variable, which is associated with the outcome but independent of the missingness process conditional on covariates and the possibly unobserved outcome. Such a variable may be a proxy or a mismeasured version of the outcome available for all individuals. We have previously established necessary and sufficient conditions for identification of the full data law in such a setting, and have described semiparametric estimators including a doubly robust e…
In the world of multivariate extremes, estimation of the dependence structure still presents a challenge and an interesting problem. A procedure for the bivariate case is presented that opens the road to a similar way of handling the problem in a truly multivariate setting. We consider a semi-parametric model in which the stable tail dependence function is parametrically modeled. Given a random sample from a bivariate distribution function, the problem is to estimate the unknown parameter. A method of moments estimator is proposed where a certain integral of a nonparametric, rank-based estimat…
Semiparametric single-index assumptions are convenient and widely used dimen\-sion reduction approaches that represent a compromise between the parametric and fully nonparametric models for regressions or conditional laws. In a mean regression setup, the SIM assumption means that the conditional expectation of the response given the vector of covariates is the same as the conditional expectation of the response given a scalar projection of the covariate vector. In a conditional distribution modeling, under the SIM assumption the conditional law of a response given the covariate vector coincide…
This paper is concerned with a semiparametric partially linear regression model with unknown regression coefficients, an unknown nonparametric function for the non-linear component, and unobservable Gaussian distributed random errors. We present a wavelet thresholding based estimation procedure to estimate the components of the partial linear model by establishing a connection between an $l_1$-penalty based wavelet estimator of the nonparametric component and Huber's M-estimation of a standard linear model with outliers. Some general results on the large sample properties of the estimates of b…
We consider a time series $X=\{X_k, k\in\mathbb{Z}\}$ with memory parameter $d\in\mathbb{R}$. This time series is either stationary or can be made stationary after differencing a finite number of times. We study the "Local Whittle Wavelet Estimator" of the memory parameter $d$. This is a wavelet-based semiparametric pseudo-likelihood maximum method estimator. The estimator may depend on a given finite range of scales or on a range which becomes infinite with the sample size. We show that the estimator is consistent and rate optimal if $X$ is a linear process and is asymptotically normal if $X$…
