We study nonparametric estimation of the diffusion coefficient from discrete data, when the observations are blurred by additional noise. Such issues have been developed over the last 10 years in several application fields and in particular in high frequency financial data modelling, however mainly from a parametric and semiparametric point of view. This paper addresses the nonparametric estimation of the path of the (possibly stochastic) diffusion coefficient in a relatively general setting. By developing pre-averaging techniques combined with wavelet thresholding, we construct adaptive estimators that achieve a nearly optimal rate within a large scale of smoothness constraints of Besov type. Since the diffusion coefficient is usually genuinely random, we propose a new criterion to assess the quality of estimation; we retrieve the usual minimax theory when this approach is restricted to a deterministic diffusion coefficient. In particular, we take advantage of recent results of Reiss [33] of asymptotic equivalence between a Gaussian diffusion with additive noise and Gaussian white noise model, in order to prove a sharp lower bound.
This paper is first devoted to study an adaptive wavelet based estimator of the long memory parameter for linear processes in a general semi-parametric frame. This is an extension of Bardet {\it et al.} (2008) which only concerned Gaussian processes. Moreover, the definition of the long memory parameter estimator is modified and asymptotic results are improved even in the Gaussian case. Finally an adaptive goodness-of-fit test is also built and easy to be employed: it is a chi-square type test. Simulations confirm the interesting properties of consistency and robustness of the adaptive estimat…
We investigate the estimation of a weighted density taking the form $g=w(F)f$, where $f$ denotes an unknown density, $F$ the associated distribution function and $w$ is a known (non-negative) weight. Such a class encompasses many examples, including those arising in order statistics or when $g$ is related to the maximum or the minimum of $N$ (random or fixed) independent and identically distributed (\iid) random variables. We here construct a new adaptive non-parametric estimator for $g$ based on a plug-in approach and the wavelets methodology. For a wide class of models, we prove that it atta…
We study the nonparametric estimation of the jump density of a compound Poisson process from the discrete observation of one trajectory over $[0,T]$. We consider the microscopic regime when the sampling rate $Δ=Δ_T\rightarrow0$ as $T\rightarrow\infty$. We propose an adaptive wavelet threshold density estimator and study its performance for the $L_p$ loss, $p\geq 1$, over Besov spaces. The main novelty is that we achieve minimax rates of convergence for sampling rates $Δ_T$ that vanish with $T$ at arbitrary polynomial rates. More precicely, our estimator attains minimax rates of convergence pro…
We present a novel approach for nonparametric regression using wavelet basis functions. Our proposal, $\texttt{waveMesh}$, can be applied to non-equispaced data with sample size not necessarily a power of 2. We develop an efficient proximal gradient descent algorithm for computing the estimator and establish adaptive minimax convergence rates. The main appeal of our approach is that it naturally extends to additive and sparse additive models for a potentially large number of covariates. We prove minimax optimal convergence rates under a weak compatibility condition for sparse additive models. …
This work is concerned with the study of asymptotic properties of nonparametric density estimates in the framework of circular data. The estimation procedure here applied is based on wavelet thresholding methods: the wavelets used are the so-called Mexican needlets, which describe a nearly-tight frame on the circle. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the $L^{2}$-risk function for these estimates, in particular its adaptivity, proving that its rate of convergence is nearly optimal.
We consider the nonparametric estimation problem of time-dependent multivariate functions observed in a presence of additive cylindrical Gaussian white noise of a small intensity. We derive minimax lower bounds for the $L^2$-risk in the proposed spatio-temporal model as the intensity goes to zero, when the underlying unknown response function is assumed to belong to a ball of appropriately constructed inhomogeneous time-dependent multivariate functions, motivated by practical applications. Furthermore, we propose both non-adaptive linear and adaptive non-linear wavelet estimators that are asym…
Consider nonparametric function estimation under $L^p$-loss. The minimax rate for estimation of the regression function over a Hölder ball with smoothness index $β$ is $n^{-β/(2β+1)}$ if $1\leq p<\infty$ and $(n/\log n)^{-β/(2β+1)}$ if $p=\infty.$ There are many known procedures that either attain this rate for $p=\infty$ but are suboptimal by a $\log n$ factor in the case $p<\infty$ or the other way around. In this article, we construct an estimator that simultaneously achieves the optimal rates under $L^p$-risk for all $1\leq p\leq \infty$ without prior knowledge of $β.$ In contrast to class…
In this paper, we consider an unknown functional estimation problem in a general nonparametric regression model with the feature of having both multiplicative and additive noise. We propose two new wavelet estimators in this general context. We prove that they achieve fast convergence rates under the mean integrated square error over Besov spaces. The obtained rates have the particularity of being established under weak conditions on the model. A numerical study in a context comparable to stochastic frontier estimation (with the difference that the boundary is not necessarily a production funct…
This paper considers the nonparametric regression model with negatively super-additive dependent (NSD) noise and investigates the convergence rates of thresholding estimators. It is shown that the term-by-term thresholding estimator achieves nearly optimal and the block thresholding estimator attains optimal (or nearly optimal) convergence rates over Besov spaces. Additionally, some numerical simulations are implemented to substantiate the validity and adaptivity of the thresholding estimators with the presence of NSD noise.
We construct an adaptive wavelet estimator that attains minimax near-optimal rates in a wide range of Besov balls. The convergence rates are affected only by the weakest dependence amongst the channels, and take into account both noise sources.
The development of wavelet theory has in recent years spawned applications in signal processing, in fast algorithms for integral transforms, and in image and function representation methods. This last application has stimulated interest in wavelet applications to statistics and to the analysis of experimental data, with many successes in the efficient analysis, processing, and compression of noisy signals and images. This is a selective review article that attempts to synthesize some recent work on ``nonlinear'' wavelet methods in nonparametric curve estimation and their role on a variety of a…
We introduce a wavelet-based model of local stationarity. This model enlarges the class of locally stationary wavelet processes and contains processes whose spectral density function may change very suddenly in time. A notion of time-varying wavelet spectrum is uniquely defined as a wavelet-type transform of the autocovariance function with respect to so-called autocorrelation wavelets. This leads to a natural representation of the autocovariance which is localized on scales. We propose a pointwise adaptive estimator of the time-varying spectrum. The behavior of the estimator studied in homoge…
In the multidimensional setting, we consider the errors-in-variables model. We aim at estimating the unknown nonparametric multivariate regression function with errors in the covariates. We devise an adaptive estimator based on projection kernels on wavelets and a deconvolution operator. We propose an automatic and fully data driven procedure to select the wavelet level resolution. We obtain an oracle inequality and optimal rates of convergence over anisotropic H{ö}lder classes. Our theoretical results are illustrated by some simulations.
In the present paper, we derive lower bounds for the risk of the nonparametric empirical Bayes estimators. In order to attain the optimal convergence rate, we propose generalization of the linear empirical Bayes estimation method which takes advantage of the flexibility of the wavelet techniques. We present an empirical Bayes estimator as a wavelet series expansion and estimate coefficients by minimizing the prior risk of the estimator. As a result, estimation of wavelet coefficients requires solution of a well-posed low-dimensional sparse system of linear equations. The dimension of the syste…
This work is intended as a contribution to a wavelet-based adaptive estimator of the memory parameter in the classical semi-parametric framework for Gaussian stationary processes. In particular we introduce and develop the choice of a data-driven optimal bandwidth. Moreover, we establish a central limit theorem for the estimator of the memory parameter with the minimax rate of convergence (up to a logarithm factor). The quality of the estimators are attested by simulations.
We construct an adaptive estimator of a density function on $d$ dimensional unit sphere $S^d$ ($d \geq 2 $), using a new type of spherical frames. The frames, or as we call them, stereografic wavelets are obtained by transforming a wavelet system, namely Daubechies, using some stereographic operators. We prove that our estimator achieves an optimal rate of convergence on some Besov type class of functions by adapting to unknown smoothness. Our new construction of stereografic wavelet system gives us a multiresolution approximation of $L^2(S^d)$ which can be used in many approximation and estim…
In this paper, we study the problem of adaptive estimation of the spectral density of a stationary Gaussian process. For this purpose, we consider a wavelet-based method which combines the ideas of wavelet approximation and estimation by information projection in order to warrants that the solution is a nonnegative function. The spectral density of the process is estimated by projecting the wavelet thresholding expansion of the periodogram onto a family of exponential functions. This ensures that the spectral density estimator is a strictly positive function. Then, by Bochner's theorem, the co…
Supremum norm loss is intuitively more meaningful to quantify function estimation error in statistics. In the context of multivariate nonparametric regression with unknown error, we propose a Bayesian procedure based on spike-and-slab prior and wavelet projections to estimate the regression function and all its mixed partial derivatives. We show that their posterior distributions contract to the truth optimally and adaptively under supremum-norm loss. The master theorem through tests with exponential errors used in Bayesian nonparametrics was not adequate to deal with this problem, and we deve…
In the present paper, we consider the estimation of a periodic two-dimensional function $f(\cdot,\cdot)$ based on observations from its noisy convolution, and convolution kernel $g(\cdot,\cdot)$ unknown. We derive the minimax lower bounds for the mean squared error assuming that $f$ belongs to certain Besov space and the kernel function $g$ satisfies some smoothness properties. We construct an adaptive hard-thresholding wavelet estimator that is asymptotically near-optimal within a logarithmic factor in a wide range of Besov balls. The proposed estimation algorithm implements a truncation to e…
In many statistical problems, stochastic signals can be represented as a sequence of noisy wavelet coefficients. In this paper, we develop general empirical Bayes methods for the estimation of true signal. Our estimators approximate certain oracle separable rules and achieve adaptation to ideal risks and exact minimax risks in broad collections of classes of signals. In particular, our estimators are uniformly adaptive to the minimum risk of separable estimators and the exact minimax risks simultaneously in Besov balls of all smoothness and shape indices, and they are uniformly superefficient …
We propose a nonlinear, wavelet based signal representation that is translation invariant and robust to both additive noise and random dilations. Motivated by the multi-reference alignment problem and generalizations thereof, we analyze the statistical properties of this representation given a large number of independent corruptions of a target signal. We prove the nonlinear wavelet based representation uniquely defines the power spectrum but allows for an unbiasing procedure that cannot be directly applied to the power spectrum. After unbiasing the representation to remove the effects of the …
A $d$-dimensional nonparametric additive regression model with dependent observations is considered. Using the marginal integration technique and wavelets methodology, we develop a new adaptive estimator for a component of the additive regression function. Its asymptotic properties are investigated via the minimax approach under the $\mathbb{L}_2$ risk over Besov balls. We prove that it attains a sharp rate of convergence which turns to be the one obtained in the $\iid$ case for the standard univariate regression estimation problem.
We study the performances of an adaptive procedure based on a convex combination, with data-driven weights, of term-by-term thresholded wavelet estimators. For the bounded regression model, with random uniform design, and the nonparametric density model, we show that the resulting estimator is optimal in the minimax sense over all Besov balls under the $L^2$ risk, without any logarithm factor.
Given an i.i.d. sample from a distribution $F$ on $\mathbb{R}$ with uniformly continuous density $p_0$, purely data-driven estimators are constructed that efficiently estimate $F$ in sup-norm loss and simultaneously estimate $p_0$ at the best possible rate of convergence over Hölder balls, also in sup-norm loss. The estimators are obtained by applying a model selection procedure close to Lepski's method with random thresholds to projections of the empirical measure onto spaces spanned by wavelets or $B$-splines. The random thresholds are based on suprema of Rademacher processes indexed by wave…
We consider a wavelet thresholding approach to adaptive variance function estimation in heteroscedastic nonparametric regression. A data-driven estimator is constructed by applying wavelet thresholding to the squared first-order differences of the observations. We show that the variance function estimator is nearly optimally adaptive to the smoothness of both the mean and variance functions. The estimator is shown to achieve the optimal adaptive rate of convergence under the pointwise squared error simultaneously over a range of smoothness classes. The estimator is also adaptively within a log…
We consider the regression model with (known) random design. We investigate the minimax performances of an adaptive wavelet block thresholding estimator under the $\mathbb{L}^p$ risk with $p\ge 2$ over Besov balls. We prove that it is near optimal and that it achieves better rates of convergence than the conventional term-by-term estimators (hard, soft,...).
We consider data-adaptive wavelet estimation of a trend function in a time series model with strongly dependent Gaussian residuals. Asymptotic expressions for the optimal mean integrated squared error and corresponding optimal smoothing and resolution parameters are derived. Due to adaptation to the properties of the underlying trend function, the approach shows very good performance for smooth trend functions while remaining competitive with minimax wavelet estimation for functions with discontinuities. Simulations illustrate the asymptotic results and finite-sample behavior.
We investigate the nonparametric bivariate additive regression estimation in the random design and long-memory errors and construct adaptive thresholding estimators based on wavelet series. The proposed approach achieves asymptotically near-optimal convergence rates when the unknown function and its univariate additive components belong to Besov space. We consider the problem under two noise structures; (1) homoskedastic Gaussian long memory errors and (2) heteroskedastic Gaussian long memory errors. In the homoskedastic long-memory error case, the estimator is completely adaptive with respect…

Dual-tree wavelet decompositions have recently gained much popularity, mainly due to their ability to provide an accurate directional analysis of images combined with a reduced redundancy. When the decomposition of a random process is performed -- which occurs in particular when an additive noise is corrupting the signal to be analyzed -- it is useful to characterize the statistical properties of the dual-tree wavelet coefficients of this process. As dual-tree decompositions constitute overcomplete frame expansions, correlation structures are introduced among the coefficients, even when a whit…
S&P 500 index data sampled at one-minute intervals over the course of 11.5 years (January 1989- May 2000) is analyzed, and in particular the Hurst parameter over segments of stationarity (the time period over which the Hurst parameter is almost constant) is estimated. An asymptotically unbiased and efficient estimator using the log-scale spectrum is employed. The estimator is asymptotically Gaussian and the variance of the estimate that is obtained from a data segment of $N$ points is of order $\frac{1}{N}$. Wavelet analysis is tailor made for the high frequency data set, since it has low comp…
