S&P 500 index data sampled at one-minute intervals over the course of 11.5 years (January 1989- May 2000) is analyzed, and in particular the Hurst parameter over segments of stationarity (the time period over which the Hurst parameter is almost constant) is estimated. An asymptotically unbiased and efficient estimator using the log-scale spectrum is employed. The estimator is asymptotically Gaussian and the variance of the estimate that is obtained from a data segment of $N$ points is of order $\frac{1}{N}$. Wavelet analysis is tailor made for the high frequency data set, since it has low computational complexity due to the pyramidal algorithm for computing the detail coefficients. This estimator is robust to additive non-stationarities, and here it is shown to exhibit some degree of robustness to multiplicative non-stationarities, such as seasonalities and volatility persistence, as well. This analysis shows that the market became more efficient in the period 1997-2000.
Multivariate (or vector-valued) processes are important for modeling multiple variables. The fractal indices of the components of the underlying multivariate process play a key role in characterizing the dependence structures and statistical properties of the multivariate process. In this paper, under the infill asymptotics framework, we establish joint asymptotic results for the increment-based estimators of bivariate fractal indices. Our main results quantitatively describe the effect of the cross-dependence structure on the performance of the estimators.
We propose a wavelet-based approach to construct consistent estimators of the pointwise Hölder exponent of a multifractional Brownian motion, in the case where this underlying process is not directly observed. The relative merits of our estimator are discussed, and we introduce an application to the problem of estimating the functional parameter of a nonlinear model.
We consider the problem of estimating the density of observations taking values in classical or nonclassical spaces such as manifolds and more general metric spaces. Our setting is quite general but also sufficiently rich in allowing the development of smooth functional calculus with well localized spectral kernels, Besov regularity spaces, and wavelet type systems. Kernel and both linear and nonlinear wavelet density estimators are introduced and studied. Convergence rates for these estimators are established, which are analogous to the existing results in the classical setting of real-valued…
In this paper, we construct the wavelet eigenvalue regression methodology in high dimensions. We assume that possibly non-Gaussian, finite-variance $p$-variate measurements are made of a low-dimensional $r$-variate ($r \ll p$) fractional stochastic process with non-canonical scaling coordinates and in the presence of additive high-dimensional noise. The measurements are correlated both time-wise and between rows. Building upon the asymptotic and large scale properties of wavelet random matrices in high dimensions, the wavelet eigenvalue regression is shown to be consistent and, under additiona…
This paper modifies a box-counting method of estimating a fractal dimension of a graph, and applies it to estimate the roughness of a sample function of a stochastic process such as a Levy process or a Gaussian process with stationary increments
In this paper, we introduce a wavelet-based method for estimating the EDR space in Li's semiparametric regression model for achieving dimension reduction. This method is obtained by using linear wavelet estimators of the density and regression functions that are involved in the covariance matrix of conditional expectation whose spectral analysis gives the EDR directions. Then, consistency of the proposed estimators is proved. A simulation study that allow one to evaluate the performance of the proposal with comparison to existing methods is presented.
In the multidimensional setting, we consider the errors-in-variables model. We aim at estimating the unknown nonparametric multivariate regression function with errors in the covariates. We devise an adaptive estimator based on projection kernels on wavelets and a deconvolution operator. We propose an automatic and fully data driven procedure to select the wavelet level resolution. We obtain an oracle inequality and optimal rates of convergence over anisotropic H{ö}lder classes. Our theoretical results are illustrated by some simulations.
This paper considers the problem of estimating probability density functions on the rotation group $SO(3)$. Two distinct approaches are proposed, one based on characteristic functions and the other on wavelets using the heat kernel. Expressions are derived for their Mean Integrated Squared Errors. The performance of the estimators is studied numerically and compared with the performance of an existing technique using the De La Vallée Poussin kernel estimator. The heat-kernel wavelet approach appears to offer the best convergence, with faster convergence to the optimal bound and guaranteed posi…
We consider stationary processes with long memory which are non-Gaussian and represented as Hermite polynomials of a Gaussian process. We focus on the corresponding wavelet coefficients and study the asymptotic behavior of the sum of their squares since this sum is often used for estimating the long-memory parameter. We show that the limit is not Gaussian but can be expressed using the non-Gaussian Rosenblatt process defined as a Wiener Itô integral of order 2. This happens even if the original process is defined through a Hermite polynomial of order higher than 2.
Most of the known methods for estimating the fractal dimension of fractal sets are based on the evaluation of a single geometric characteristic, e.g. the volume of its parallel sets. We propose a method involving the evaluation of several geometric characteristics, namely all the intrinsic volumes (i.e.\ volume, surface area, Euler characteristic etc.) of the parallel sets of a fractal. Motivated by recent results on their limiting behaviour, we use these functionals to estimate the fractal dimension of sets from digital images. Simultaneously, we also obtain estimates of the fractal curvature…
In the recent years, methods to estimate the memory parameter using wavelet analysis have gained popularity in many areas of science. Despite its widespread use, a rigorous semi-parametric asymptotic theory, comparable to the one developed for Fourier methods, is still missing. In this contribution, we adapt the classical semi-parametric framework introduced by Robinson and his co-authors for estimating the memory parameter of a (possibly) non-stationary process. As an application, we obtain minimax upper bounds for the log-scale regression estimator of the memory parameter for a Gaussian proc…
We propose a new wavelet-based method for density estimation when the data are size-biased. More specifically, we consider a power of the density of interest, where this power exceeds 1/2. Warped wavelet bases are employed, where warping is attained by some continuous cumulative distribution function. A special case is the conventional orthonormal wavelet estimation, where the warping distribution is the standard continuous uniform. We show that both linear and nonlinear wavelet estimators are consistent, with optimal and/or near-optimal rates. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to compare …
We propose a wavelet-based technique for the nonparametric estimation of functions contaminated with noise whose mean and variance are linked via a possibly unknown variance function. Our method, termed the data-driven wavelet-Fisz technique, consists of estimating the variance function via a Nadaraya-Watson estimator, and then performing a wavelet thresholding procedure which uses the estimated variance function and local means of the data to set the thresholds at a suitable level. We demonstrate the mean-square near-optimality of our wavelet estimator over the usual range of Besov classes. T…
We study the nonparametric estimation of the jump density of a compound Poisson process from the discrete observation of one trajectory over $[0,T]$. We consider the microscopic regime when the sampling rate $Δ=Δ_T\rightarrow0$ as $T\rightarrow\infty$. We propose an adaptive wavelet threshold density estimator and study its performance for the $L_p$ loss, $p\geq 1$, over Besov spaces. The main novelty is that we achieve minimax rates of convergence for sampling rates $Δ_T$ that vanish with $T$ at arbitrary polynomial rates. More precicely, our estimator attains minimax rates of convergence pro…
We consider the problem of estimating the unknown response function in the Gaussian white noise model. We first utilize the recently developed Bayesian maximum a posteriori "testimation" procedure of Abramovich et al. (2007) for recovering an unknown high-dimensional Gaussian mean vector. The existing results for its upper error bounds over various sparse $l_p$-balls are extended to more general cases. We show that, for a properly chosen prior on the number of non-zero entries of the mean vector, the corresponding adaptive estimator is simultaneously asymptotically minimax in a wide range of s…
Accurate density estimation methodologies play an integral role in a variety of scientific disciplines, with applications including simulation models, decision support tools, and exploratory data analysis. In the past, histograms and kernel density estimators have been the predominant tools of choice, primarily due to their ease of use and mathematical simplicity. More recently, the use of wavelets for density estimation has gained in popularity due to their ability to approximate a large class of functions, including those with localized, abrupt variations. However, a well-known attribute of …
While a substantial literature on structural break change point analysis exists for univariate time series, research on large panel data models has not been as extensive. In this paper, a novel method for estimating panel models with multiple structural changes is proposed. The breaks are allowed to occur at unknown points in time and may affect the multivariate slope parameters individually. Our method adapts Haar wavelets to the structure of the observed variables in order to detect the change points of the parameters consistently. We also develop methods to address endogenous regressors wit…
Independent component analysis (ICA) is linked up with the problem of estimating a non linear functional of a density, for which optimal estimators are well known. The precision of ICA is analyzed from the viewpoint of functional spaces in the wavelet framework. In particular, it is shown that, under Besov smoothness conditions, parametric rate of convergence is achieved by a U-statistic estimator of the wavelet ICA contrast, while the previously introduced plug-in estimator $\hat C^2\_j$, with moderate computational cost, has a rate in $n^{-4s\over 4s+d}$.
As a starting point we prove a functional central limit theorem for estimators of the invariant measure of a geometrically ergodic Harris-recurrent Markov chain in a multi-scale space. This allows to construct confidence bands for the invariant density with optimal (up to undersmoothing) $L^{\infty}$-diameter by using wavelet projection estimators. In addition our setting applies to the drift estimation of diffusions observed discretely with fixed observation distance. We prove a functional central limit theorem for estimators of the drift function and finally construct adaptive confidence ban…
Let $p_n(y)=\sum_k\hatα_kϕ(y-k)+\sum_{l=0}^{j_n-1}\sum_k\hat β_{lk}2^{l/2}ψ(2^ly-k)$ be the linear wavelet density estimator, where $ϕ$, $ψ$ are a father and a mother wavelet (with compact support), $\hatα_k$, $\hatβ_{lk}$ are the empirical wavelet coefficients based on an i.i.d. sample of random variables distributed according to a density $p_0$ on $\mathbb{R}$, and $j_n\in\mathbb{Z}$, $j_n\nearrow\infty$. Several uniform limit theorems are proved: First, the almost sure rate of convergence of $\sup_{y\in\mathbb{R}}|p_n(y)-Ep_n(y)|$ is obtained, and a law of the logarithm for a suitably scale…
Assume one observes independent categorical variables or, equivalently, one observes the corresponding multinomial variables. Estimating the distribution of the observed sequence amounts to estimating the expectation of the multinomial sequence. A new estimator for this mean is proposed that is nonparametric, non-asymptotic and implementable even for large sequences. It is a penalized least-squares estimator based on wavelets, with a penalization term inspired by papers of Birgé and Massart. The estimator is proved to satisfy an oracle inequality and to be adaptive in the minimax sense over a …
In this paper we develop a nonparametric regression method that is simultaneously adaptive over a wide range of function classes for the regression function and robust over a large collection of error distributions, including those that are heavy-tailed, and may not even possess variances or means. Our approach is to first use local medians to turn the problem of nonparametric regression with unknown noise distribution into a standard Gaussian regression problem and then apply a wavelet block thresholding procedure to construct an estimator of the regression function. It is shown that the esti…
We consider the problem of estimating the s-th derivative of a density function f by the tilted Kernel estimator introduced in Hall and Doosti (2012). Then we further show this estimator achieves the same convergence rate, in probability, the wavelet estimators achieved as shown in Hall and Patil (1995).
