In this paper, we present new results on Hunt's hypothesis (H) for Lévy processes. We start with a comparison result on Lévy processes which implies that big jumps have no effect on the validity of (H). Based on this result and the Kanda-Forst-Rao theorem, we give examples of subordinators satisfying (H). Afterwards we give a new necessary and sufficient condition for (H) and obtain an extended Kanda-Forst-Rao theorem. By virtue of this theorem, we give a new class of Lévy processes satisfying (H). Finally, we construct a type of subordinators that does not satisfy Rao's condition.
The goal of this paper is threefold. First, we survey the existing results on Hunt's hypothesis (H) for Markov processes and Getoor's conjecture for Lévy processes. Second, we investigate (H) for multidimensional Lévy processes from the viewpoints of projections and energy, respectively. Third, we present a few open questions for further study.
In this paper, we will consider the problem that how far from Hunt's hypothesis (H) to symmetrization for a general 1-dimensional diffusion. A characterization of (H) involving the classification of points for this diffusion will be first obtained. Then the main result shows that such a process is symmetrizable, if and only if (H) holds and a certain family of asymmetric shunt points is empty. Furthermore, we will also derive the representation of associated Dirichlet forms of general 1-dimensional diffusions under symmetry.
Which Levy processes satisfy Hunt's hypothesis (H) is a long-standing open problem in probabilistic potential theory. The study of this problem for one-dimensional Levy processes suggests us to consider (H) from the point of view of the sum of Levy processes. In this paper, we present theorems and examples on the validity of (H) for the sum of two independent Levy processes. We also give a novel condition on the Levy measure which implies (H) for a large class of one-dimensional Levy processes.
Hunt's hypothesis (H) and the related Getoor's conjecture is one of the most important problems in the basic theory of Markov processes. In this paper, we investigate the invariance of Hunt's hypothesis (H) for Markov processes under two classes of transformations, which are change of measure and subordination. Our first theorem shows that for two standard processes $(X_t)$ and $(Y_t)$, if $(X_t)$ satisfies (H) and $(Y_t)$ is locally absolutely continuous with respect to $(X_t)$, then $(Y_t)$ satisfies (H). Our second theorem shows that a standard process $(X_t)$ satisfies (H) if and only if $…
In this paper, Hunt's hypothesis (H) and Getoor's conjecture for Lévy processes are revisited. Let $X$ be a Lévy process on $\mathbf{R}^n$ with Lévy-Khintchine exponent $(a,A,μ)$. {First, we show that if $A$ is non-degenerate then $X$ satisfies (H). Second, under the assumption that $μ({\mathbf{R}^n\backslash \sqrt{A}\mathbf{R}^n})<\infty$, we show that $X$ satisfies (H) if and only if the equation $$ \sqrt{A}y=-a-\int_{\{x\in {\mathbf{R}^n\backslash \sqrt{A}\mathbf{R}^n}:\,|x|<1\}}xμ(dx),\ y\in \mathbf{R}^n, $$ has at least one solution. Finally, we show that if $X$ is a subordinator and sati…
Getoor's conjecture that essentially all Levy processes satisfy (H) is a long-standing open problem in potential theory. In the beginning of the paper, we summarize the main results obtained so far for the problem. Then, we present two new necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of (H). Furthermore, we give applications of these new criteria. First, we give explicit constructions of Levy processes satisfying (H) in a context where previously known results could not be applied. Second, we show that a large class of pure jump subordinators can be decomposed into the summation of two…
Deterministic processes form an important building block of several classes of processes. We provide a method to classify deterministic Hunt processes. Within this framework we characterize different subclasses (e.g. Feller) and construct some (counter-)examples. In particular the existence of a Hunt semimartingale (on R) which is not an Itô process in the sense of Cinlar, Jacod, Protter and Sharpe (1980) is proven.
We show that any strictly quasi-regular generalized Dirichlet form that satisfies the mild structural condition D3 is associated to a Hunt process, and that the associated Hunt process can be approximated by a sequence of multivariate Poisson processes. This also gives a new proof for the existence of a Hunt process associated to a strictly quasi-regular generalized Dirichlet form that satisfies SD3 and extends all previous results.
In this paper we use the spine decomposition and martingale change of measure to establish a Kesten-Stigum $L\log L$ theorem for branching Hunt processes. This result is a generalization of the results in Asmussen-Hering (1976) and Hering (1978) for branching diffusions.
Variational formulas for the Laplace transform of the exit time from an open set of a Hunt process generated by a regular lower bounded semi-Dirichlet form are established. While for symmetric Markov processes, variational formulas are derived for the exponential moments of the exit time. As applications, we provide some comparison theorems and quantitative relations of the exponential moments and Poincaré inequalities.
We establish weak and strong law of large numbers for a class of branching symmetric Hunt processes with the branching rate being a smooth measure with respect to the underlying Hunt process, and the branching mechanism being general and state-dependent. Our work is motivated by recent work on strong law of large numbers for branching symmetric Markov processes by Chen-Shiozawa [J. Funct. Anal., 250, 374--399, 2007] and for branching diffusions by Engländer-Harris-Kyprianou [Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Probab. Stat., 46, 279--298, 2010]. Our results can be applied to some interesting examples th…
In this paper we prove that, under certain conditions, a strong law of large number holds for a class of branching particle systems $X$ corresponding to the parameters $(Y,β,ψ)$, where $Y$ is a Hunt process and $ψ$ is the generating function for the offspring. The main tool of this paper is the spine decomposition and we only need a $L\log L$ condition.
The optimal stopping problem for a Hunt processes on $\R$ is considered via the representation theory of excessive functions. In particular, we focus on infinite horizon (or perpetual) problems with one-sided structure, that is, there exists a point $x^*$ such that the stopping region is of the form $[x^*,+\infty)$. Corresponding results for two-sided problems are also indicated. The main result is a spectral representation of the value function in terms of the Green kernel of the process. Specializing in Lévy processes, we obtain, by applying the Wiener-Hopf factorization, a general represent…
A quasidiffusion is by definition a time-changed Brownian motion on certain closed subset of $\mathbb{R}$. The aim of this paper is two-fold. On one hand, we will put forward a generation of quasidiffusion, called skip-free Hunt process, by way of a pathwise setup. As an analogue of regular diffusion on an interval, a skip-free Hunt process also admits a so-called scale function and a so-called speed measure. In addition, it is uniquely determined by scale function and speed measure. Particularly, a skip-free Hunt process is a quasidiffusion, if and only if it is on the natural scale. On the o…
Let $E$ be a locally compact separable metric space and $m$ be a positive Radon measure on it. Given a nonnegative function $k$ defined on $E\times E$ off the diagonal whose anti-symmetric part is assumed to be less singular than the symmetric part, we construct an associated regular lower bounded semi-Dirichlet form $η$ on $L^2(E;m)$ producing a Hunt process $X^0$ on $E$ whose jump behaviours are governed by $k$. For an arbitrary open subset $D\subset E$, we also construct a Hunt process $X^{D,0}$ on $D$ in an analogous manner. When $D$ is relatively compact, we show that $X^{D,0}$ is censore…
In this paper we explain that the natural filtration of a continuous Hunt process is continuous, and show that martingales over such a filtration are continuous. We further establish a martingale representation theorem for a class of continuous Hunt processes under certain technical conditions. In particular we establish the martingale representation theorem for the martingale parts of (reflecting) symmetric diffusions in a bounded domain with a continuous boundary. Together with an approach put forward in Lyons et al(2009), our martingale representation theorem is then applied to the study of…
Let $(S,ρ)$ be an ultrametric space with certain conditions and $S^k$ be the quotient space of $S$ with respect to the partition by balls with a fixed radius $ϕ(k)$. We prove that, for a Hunt process $X$ on $S$ associated with a Dirichlet form $(\mathcal E, \mathcal F)$, a Hunt process $X^k$ on $S^k$ associated with the averaged Dirichlet form $(\mathcal E^k, \mathcal F^k)$ is Mosco convergent to $X$, and under certain additional conditions, $X^k$ converges weakly to $X$. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for the Markov property of $X$ to be preserved under the canonical projection $π^k…
We construct an example of a continuous centered random process with light tails of finite-dimensional distribution but with heavy tail of maximum distribution.
In this paper we prove the Poisson Hypothesis for the limiting behavior of the large queueing systems in some simple ("mean-field") cases. We show in particular that the corresponding dynamical systems, defined by the non-linear Markov processes, have a line of fixed points which are global attractors. To do this we derive the corresponding non-linear integral equation and we explore its self-averaging properties. Our derivation relies on a solution of a combinatorial problem of rode placements.
Under the hypothesis of convergence in probability of a sequence of càdlàg processes $(X^n)_n$ to a càdlàg process $X$, we are interested in the convergence of corresponding values in optimal stopping. We give results under hypothesis of inclusion of filtrations or convergence of filtrations.
In this paper we study the Poisson Hypothesis, which is a device to analyze approximately the behavior of large queueing networks. We prove it in some simple limiting cases. We show in particular that the corresponding dynamical system, defined by the non-linear Markov process, has a line of fixed points which are global attractors. To do this we derive the corresponding non-linear equation and we explore its self-averaging properties. We also argue that in cases of havy-tail service times the PH can be violated.
Network dynamics with point-process-based interactions are of paramount modeling interest. Unfortunately, most relevant dynamics involve complex graphs of interactions for which an exact computational treatment is impossible. To circumvent this difficulty, the replica-mean-field approach focuses on randomly interacting replicas of the networks of interest. In the limit of an infinite number of replicas, these networks become analytically tractable under the so-called "Poisson Hypothesis". However, in most applications, this hypothesis is only conjectured. Here, we establish the Poisson Hypothe…
We consider the goodness of fit testing problem for ergodic diffusion processes. The basic hypothesis is supposed to be simple. The diffusion coefficient is known and the alternatives are described by the different trend coefficients. We study the asymptotic distribution of the Cramer-von Mises type tests based on the empirical distribution function and local time estimator of the invariant density. At particularly, we propose a transformation which makes these tests asymptotically distribution free. We discuss the modifications of this test in the case of composite basic hypothesis.
Given a finite-valued sample $X_1,...,X_n$ we wish to test whether it was generated by a stationary ergodic process belonging to a family $H_0$, or it was generated by a stationary ergodic process outside $H_0$. We require the Type I error of the test to be uniformly bounded, while the type II error has to be mande not more than a finite number of times with probability 1. For this notion of consistency we provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the family $H_0$ for the existence of a consistent test. This criterion is illustrated with applications to testing for a membership to paramet…
