Variational formulas for the Laplace transform of the exit time from an open set of a Hunt process generated by a regular lower bounded semi-Dirichlet form are established. While for symmetric Markov processes, variational formulas are derived for the exponential moments of the exit time. As applications, we provide some comparison theorems and quantitative relations of the exponential moments and Poincaré inequalities.
We show that any strictly quasi-regular generalized Dirichlet form that satisfies the mild structural condition D3 is associated to a Hunt process, and that the associated Hunt process can be approximated by a sequence of multivariate Poisson processes. This also gives a new proof for the existence of a Hunt process associated to a strictly quasi-regular generalized Dirichlet form that satisfies SD3 and extends all previous results.
We give some relationships between the first Dirichlet eigenvalues and the exit time moments for the general symmetric Markov processes. As applications, we present some examples, including symmetric diffusions and $α$-stable processes, and provide the estimates of their first Dirichlet eigenvalues and the exit time moments.
We consider random walks in Dirichlet environment, introduced by Enriquez and Sabot in 2006. As this distribution on environments is not uniformly elliptic, the annealed integrability of exit times out of a given finite subset is a non-trivial property. We provide here an explicit equivalent condition for this integrability to happen, on general directed graphs. Such integrability problems arise for instance from the definition of Kalikow auxiliary random walk. Using our condition, we prove a refined version of the ballisticity criterion given by Enriquez and Sabot.
This paper discusses the first exit and Dirichlet problems of the nonisotropic tempered $α$-stable process $X_t$. The upper bounds of all moments of the first exit position $\left|X_{τ_D}\right|$ and the first exit time $τ_D$ are firstly obtained. It is found that the probability density function of $\left|X_{τ_D}\right|$ or $τ_D$ exponentially decays with the increase of $\left|X_{τ_D}\right|$ or $τ_D$, and $\mathrm{E}\left[τ_D\right]\sim \left|\mathrm{E}\left[X_{τ_D}\right]\right|$,\ $\mathrm{E}\left[τ_D\right]\sim\mathrm{E}\left[\left|X_{τ_D}-\mathrm{E}\left[X_{τ_D}\right]\right|^2\right] $…
A quasidiffusion is by definition a time-changed Brownian motion on certain closed subset of $\mathbb{R}$. The aim of this paper is two-fold. On one hand, we will put forward a generation of quasidiffusion, called skip-free Hunt process, by way of a pathwise setup. As an analogue of regular diffusion on an interval, a skip-free Hunt process also admits a so-called scale function and a so-called speed measure. In addition, it is uniquely determined by scale function and speed measure. Particularly, a skip-free Hunt process is a quasidiffusion, if and only if it is on the natural scale. On the o…
Let $E$ be a locally compact separable metric space and $m$ be a positive Radon measure on it. Given a nonnegative function $k$ defined on $E\times E$ off the diagonal whose anti-symmetric part is assumed to be less singular than the symmetric part, we construct an associated regular lower bounded semi-Dirichlet form $η$ on $L^2(E;m)$ producing a Hunt process $X^0$ on $E$ whose jump behaviours are governed by $k$. For an arbitrary open subset $D\subset E$, we also construct a Hunt process $X^{D,0}$ on $D$ in an analogous manner. When $D$ is relatively compact, we show that $X^{D,0}$ is censore…
It is well known that a regular diffusion on an interval $I$ without killing inside is uniquely determined by a canonical scale function $s$ and a canonical speed measure $m$. Note that $s$ is a strictly increasing and continuous function and $m$ is a fully supported Radon measure on $I$. In this paper we will associate a general triple $(I,s,m)$, where $s$ is only assumed to be increasing and $m$ is not necessarily fully supported, to certain Markov processes by way of Dirichlet forms. A straightforward generalization of Dirichlet form associated to regular diffusion will be first put forward…
This paper investigates sufficient conditions for a Feynman-Kac functional up to an exit time to be the generalized viscosity solution of a Dirichlet problem. The key ingredient is to find out the continuity of exit operator under Skorokhod topology, which reveals the intrinsic connection between overfitting Dirichlet boundary and fine topology. As an application, we establish the sub and supersolutions for a class of non-stationary HJB (Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman) equations with fractional Laplacian operator via Feynman-Kac functionals associated to $α$-stable processes, which help verify the so…
This paper is devoted to studying the properties of the exit times of stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion ($G$-SDEs). In particular, we prove that the exit times of $G$-SDEs has the quasi-continuity property. As an application, we give a probabilistic representation for a large class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations with Dirichlet boundary.
We consider open quantum walks on a graph, and consider the random variables defined as the passage time and number of visits to a given point of the graph. We study in particular the probability that the passage time is finite, the expectation of that passage time, and the expectation of the number of visits, and discuss the notion of recurrence for open quantum walks. We also study exit times and exit probabilities from a finite domain, and use them to solve Dirichlet problems and to determine harmonic measures. We consider in particular the case of irreducible open quantum walks. The result…
This paper presents estimates for the distribution of the exit time from balls and short time asymptotics for measure metric Dirichlet spaces. The estimates cover the classical Gaussian case, the sub-diffusive case which can be observed on particular fractals and further less regular cases as well. The proof is based on a new chaining argument and it is free of volume growth assumptions.
We consider a kind of stochastic exit time optimal control problems, in which the cost function is defined through a nonlinear backward stochastic differential equation. We study the regularity of the value function for such a control problem. Then extending Peng's backward semigroup method, we show the dynamic programming principle. Moreover, we prove that the value function is a viscosity solution to the following generalized Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation with Dirichlet boundary: \[ \left\{ \begin{array} [c]{l} \inf\limits_{v\in V}\left\{\mathcal{L}(x,v)u(x)+f(x,u(x),\nabla u(x) σ(x,v),v)…
Let $(S,ρ)$ be an ultrametric space with certain conditions and $S^k$ be the quotient space of $S$ with respect to the partition by balls with a fixed radius $ϕ(k)$. We prove that, for a Hunt process $X$ on $S$ associated with a Dirichlet form $(\mathcal E, \mathcal F)$, a Hunt process $X^k$ on $S^k$ associated with the averaged Dirichlet form $(\mathcal E^k, \mathcal F^k)$ is Mosco convergent to $X$, and under certain additional conditions, $X^k$ converges weakly to $X$. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for the Markov property of $X$ to be preserved under the canonical projection $π^k…
We investigate long-time behaviors of empirical measures associated with subordinated Dirichlet diffusion processes on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M$ to some reference measure, under the quadratic Wasserstein distance. For any initial distribution not concentrated on $\partial M$, we obtain the rate of convergence and even the precise limit for the conditional expectation of the quadratic Wasserstein distance conditioned on the process killed upon exiting $M\setminus\partial M$. In particular, the results coincide with the recent ones proved by F.-Y. Wang in \cite…
Using the standard tools of Daniell-Stone integrals, Stone-Čech compactification and Gelfand transform, we discuss how any Dirichlet form defined on a measurable space can be transformed into a regular Dirichlet form on a locally compact space. This implies existence, on the Stone-Čech compactification, of the associated Hunt process. As an application, we show that for any separable resistance form in the sense of Kigami there exists an associated Markov process.
In this paper we consider the Dirichlet form on the half-space $\mathbb{R}^d_+$ defined by the jump kernel $J(x,y)=|x-y|^{-d-α}\mathcal{B}(x,y)$, where $\mathcal{B}(x,y)$ can be degenerate at the boundary. Unlike our previous works [6,7] where we imposed critical killing, here we assume that the killing potential is identically zero. In case $α\in (1,2)$ we first show that the corresponding Hunt process has finite lifetime and dies at the boundary. Then, as our main contribution, we prove the boundary Harnack principle and establish sharp two-sided Green function estimates. Our results cover t…
We apply the Stochastic Perron method, created by Bayraktar and Sîrbu, to a stochastic exit time control problem. Our main assumption is the validity of the Strong Comparison Result for the related Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. Without relying on Bellman's optimality principle we prove that inside the domain the value function is continuous and coincides with a viscosity solution of the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the HJB equation.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic of exit problem for controlled Markov diffusion processes with random jumps and vanishing diffusion terms, where the random jumps are introduced in order to modify the evolution of the controlled diffusions by switching from one mode of dynamics to another. That is, depending on the state-position and state-transition information, the dynamics of the controlled diffusions randomly switches between the different drift and diffusion terms. Here, we specifically investigate the asymptotic exit problem concerning such controlled Markov diffusion processes in …
In his seminal work from the 1950s, William Feller classified all one-dimensional diffusions on $-\infty\leq a<b\leq \infty$ in terms of their ability to access the boundary (Feller's test for explosions) and to enter the interior from the boundary. Feller's technique is restricted to diffusion processes as the corresponding differential generators allow explicit computations and the use of Hille-Yosida theory. In the present article we study exit and entrance from infinity for the most natural generalization, that is, jump diffusions of the form \[ dZ_t=σ(Z_{t-})\,dX_t, \] driven by stable Lé…
We obtain a formula for the distribution of the first exit time of Brownian motion from the alcove of an affine Weyl group. In most cases the formula is expressed compactly, in terms of Pfaffians. Expected exit times are derived in the type à case. The results extend to other Markov processes. We also give formulas for the real eigenfunctions of the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians on alcoves, observing that the `Hot Spots' conjecture of J. Rauch is true for alcoves.
We show existence of an infinitesimally invariant measure $m$ for a large class of divergence and non-divergence form elliptic second order partial differential operators with locally Sobolev regular diffusion coefficient and drift of some local integrability order. Subsequently, we derive regularity properties of the corresponding semigroup which is defined in $L^s(\mathbb{R}^d,m)$, $s\in [1,\infty]$, including the classical strong Feller property and classical irreducibility. This leads to a transition function of a Hunt process that is explicitly identified as a solution to an SDE. Further …
We consider a class of exit time stochastic control problems for diffusion processes with discounted criterion, where the controller can utilize a given amount of resource, called "fuel". In contrast to the vast majority of existing literature, concerning the "finite fuel" problems, it is assumed that the intensity of fuel consumption is bounded. We characterize the value function of the optimization problem as the unique continuous viscosity solution of the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the correspondent Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. Our assumptions concern the HJB equations,…
Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold and $D\subset M$ a smoothly bounded domain with compact closure. We use Brownian motion and the classic results on the Stieltjes moment problem to study the relationship between the Dirichlet spectrum of $D$ and the heat content asymptotics of $D.$ Central to our investigation is a sequence of invariants associated to $D$ defined using exit time moments. We prove that our invariants determine that part of the spectrum corresponding to eigenspaces which are not orthogonal to constant functions, that our invariants determine the heat content asymptotics …
Let $X$ be a $μ$-symmetric Hunt process on a LCCB space E. For an open set G $\subseteq$ E, let $τ_G$ be the exit time of $X$ from G and $A^G$ be the generator of the process killed when it leaves G. Let $r:[0,\infty[\to[0,\infty[$ and $R (t) = \int_0^t r(s) ds$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for $\E_μ R (τ_G)<\infty$ in terms of the behavior near the origin of the spectral measure of $-A^G.$ When $r(t)=t^l$, $l>0$, by means of this condition we derive the Nash inequality for the killed process. In the case of one-dimensional diffusions, this permits to show that the existence of…
In this paper we consider a large class of symmetric Markov processes $X=(X_t)_{t\ge0}$ on $\R^d$ generated by non-local Dirichlet forms, which include jump processes with small jumps of $α$-stable-like type and with large jumps of super-exponential decay. Let $D\subset \R^d$ be an open (not necessarily bounded and connected) set, and $X^D=(X_t^D)_{t\ge0}$ be the killed process of $X$ on exiting $D$. We obtain explicit criterion for the compactness and the intrinsic ultracontractivity of the Dirichlet Markov semigroup $(P^{D}_t)_{t\ge0}$ of $X^D$. When $D$ is a horn-shaped region, we further o…
The theory of Dirichlet forms as originated by Beurling-Deny and developed particularly by Fukushima and Silverstein, is a natural functional analytic extension of classical (and axiomatic) potential theory. Although some parts of it have abstract measure theoretic versions, the basic general construction of a Hunt process properly associated with the form, obtained by Fukushima and Silverstein, requires the form to be defined on a locally compact separable space with a Radon measure $m$ and the form to be regular (in the sense of the continuous functions of compact support being dense in the …
In this work, we analyse the metastability of non-reversible diffusion processes $$dX_t=\boldsymbol{b}(X_t)dt+\sqrt h\,dB_t$$ on a bounded domain $Ω$ when $\mathbf{b}$ admits the decomposition $\mathbf{b}=-(\nabla f+\mathbf{\ell})$ and $\nabla f \cdot \mathbf{\ell}=0$. In this setting, we first show that, when $h\to 0$, the principal eigenvalue of the generator of $(X_t)_{t\ge 0}$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary $\partialΩ$ of $Ω$ is exponentially close to the inverse of the mean exit time from $Ω$, uniformly in the initial conditions $X_0=x$ within the compacts of $Ω$. The …
We introduce a class of interesting stochastic processes based on Brownian-time processes. These are obtained by taking Markov processes and replacing the time parameter with the modulus of Brownian motion. They generalize the iterated Brownian motion (IBM) of Burdzy and the Markov snake of Le Gall, and they introduce new interesting examples. After defining Brownian-time processes, we relate them to fourth order parabolic PDEs. We then study their exit problem as they exit nice domains in $\Rd$, and connect it to elliptic PDEs. We show that these processes have the peculiar property that they…
Consider an intersection measure $\ell_t ^{\mathrm{IS}}$ of $p$ independent (possibly different) $m$-symmetric Hunt processes up to time $t$ in a metric measure space $E$ with a Radon measure $m$. We derive a Donsker-Varadhan type large deviation principle for the normalized intersection measure $t^{-p}\ell_t ^{\mathrm{IS}}$ on the set of finite measures on $E$ as $t \rightarrow \infty$, under the condition that $t$ is smaller than life times of all processes. This extends earlier work by W. König and C. Mukherjee (2013), in which the large deviation principle was established for the intersect…

Let $D\subset R^d$ be a bounded domain and denote by $\mathcal P(D)$ the space of probability measures on $D$. Let \begin{equation*} L=\frac12\nabla\cdot a\nabla +b\nabla \end{equation*} be a second order elliptic operator. Let $μ\in\mathcal P(D)$ and $δ>0$. Consider a Markov process $X(t)$ in $D$ which performs diffusion in $D$ generated by the operator $δL$ and is stopped at the boundary, and which while running, jumps instantaneously, according to an exponential clock with spatially dependent intensity $V>0$, to a new point, according to the distribution $μ$. The Markov process is generated…

Consider the following Dirichlet initial-boundary problem of nonlocal operators with a drift: $$ \partial_t u={\mathscr L}^{(α)}_κu+b\cdot \nabla u+f\ \mathrm{in}\ \mathbb R_+\times D,\ \ u|_{\mathbb R_+\times D^c}=0,\ u(0,\cdot)|_{D}=φ, $$ where $α\in(0,2)$ and $\mathscr L^{(α)}_κ$ is an $α$-stable-like nonlocal operator with kernel function $κ(x,z)$ bounded from above and below by positive constants, and $b:\mathbb R^d\to\mathbb R^d$ is a bounded $C^β$-function with $α+β>1$, $f: \mathbb R_+\times D\to\mathbb R$ is a $C^γ$-function in $D$ uniformly in $t$ wi…
