We investigate the nature of the AdS/CFT duality between a subregion of the bulk and its boundary. In global AdS/CFT in the classical G_N=0 limit, the duality reduces to a boundary value problem that can be solved by restricting to one-point functions of local operators in the CFT. We show that the solution of this boundary value problem depends continuously on the CFT data. In contrast, the AdS-Rindler subregion cannot be continuously reconstructed from local CFT data restricted to the associated boundary region. Motivated by related results in the mathematics literature, we posit that a continuous bulk reconstruction is only possible when every null geodesic in a given bulk subregion has an endpoint on the associated boundary subregion. This suggests that a subregion duality for AdS-Rindler, if it exists, must involve nonlocal CFT operators in an essential way.
In the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, imposing a scalar field in the bulk space-time leads to deform the corresponding CFT in the boundary, which may produce corrections to entanglement entropy, as well as the so-called subregion complexity. We have computed such corrections for a set of singular subregions including kink, cones and creases in different dimensions. Our calculations shows new singular terms including universal logarithmic corrections for entanglement entropy and subregion complexity for some distinct values of conformal weight.
We consider the computation of volumes contained in a spatial slice of AdS$_3$ in terms of observables in a dual CFT. Our main tool is kinematic space, defined either from the bulk perspective as the space of oriented bulk geodesics, or from the CFT perspective as the space of entangling intervals. We give an explicit formula for the volume of a general region in the spatial slice as an integral over kinematic space. For the region lying below a geodesic, we show how to write this volume purely in terms of entangling entropies in the dual CFT. This expression is perhaps most interesting in lig…
In this paper, we study the AdS-Rindler reconstruction. The CFT operators naively given by the holographic dictionary for the AdS-Rindler reconstruction contain tachyonic modes, which are inconsistent with the causality and unitarity of the CFT. Therefore, the subregion duality and the entanglement wedge reconstruction do not hold. We also find that the tachyonic modes in the AdS-Rindler patch lead to arbitrary high-energy or trans-Planckian modes in the global AdS. It means that the mode expansion of the Rindler patch is sensitive to the UV limit of the theory, that is, quantum gravity. In ad…
We study the evolution of holographic subregion complexity under a thermal quench in this paper. From the subregion CV proposal in the AdS/CFT correspondence, the subregion complexity in the CFT is holographically captured by the volume of the codimension-one surface enclosed by the codimension-two extremal entanglement surface and the boundary subregion. Under a thermal quench, the dual gravitational configuration is described by a Vaidya-AdS spacetime. In this case we find that the holographic subregion complexity always increases at early time, and after reaching a maximum it decreases and …
We study the portion of an asymptotically Anti de Sitter geometry's bulk where the metric can be reconstructed, given the areas of minimal 2-surfaces anchored to a fixed boundary subregion. We exhibit situations in which this region can reach parametrically far outside of the entanglement wedge. If the setting is furthermore holographic, so that the bulk geometry is dual to a state in a conformal field theory (CFT), these minimal 2-surface areas can be deduced from the expectation values of operators localized within the boundary subregion. This presents us with an alternative: Either the redu…
Subregion duality in AdS/CFT implies certain constraints on the geometry: entanglement wedges must contain causal wedges, and nested boundary regions must have nested entanglement wedges. We elucidate the logical connections between these statements and the Quantum Focussing Conjecture, Quantum Null Energy Condition, Boundary Causality Condition, and Averaged Null Energy Condition. Our analysis does not rely on the classical limit of bulk physics, but instead works to all orders in $G\hbar \sim 1/N$. This constitutes a nontrivial check on the consistency of subregion duality, entanglement wedg…
Different AdS-Rindler wedges can be mapped to each other using bulk isometries. In this paper we address how the boundary representations corresponding to the AdS-Rindler wedges transform under such isometries. We show that when a bulk wedge is mapped to another using a bulk isometry, their boundary representations are mapped by the conformal transformation corresponding to the isometry. We comment on the import of this result on the relation between AdS/CFT and quantum error correction.
We study shape-deformations of the entanglement entropy and the modular Hamiltonian for an arbitrary subregion and state (with a smooth dual geometry) in a holographic conformal field theory. More precisely, we study a double-deformation comprising of a shape deformation together with a state deformation, where the latter corresponds to a small change in the bulk geometry. Using a purely gravitational identity from the Hollands-Iyer-Wald formalism together with the assumption of equality between bulk and boundary modular flows for the original, undeformed state and subregion, we rewrite a pure…
AApplying the Born-Infeld Anti de Sitter charged black hole metric we calculate holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) by regarding the proposal of Ryu and Takanayagi. To do so we assume that time dependence of the black hole mass and charge to be as step function. Our work is restricted to small subregions where a collapsing null shell dose not penetrate the black holes horizon. To calculate time dependent HEE we use perturbation method for small subregions where turning point is much smaller than local equilibrium point of black hole. We choose two shape functions for entangled regions on th…
We explore several aspects of the relation between gravity and entanglement in the context of AdS/CFT, in the simple setting of 3 bulk dimensions. Specifically, we consider small perturbations of the AdS metric and the CFT vacuum state and study what can be learnt about the metric perturbation from the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) formula alone. It is well-known that, if the RT formula holds for all boundary spacelike segments, then the metric perturbation satisfies the linearized Einstein equations throughout the bulk. We generalize this result by showing that, if the RT formula holds for all spacelik…
We study the holographic quantum error correcting code properties of a Sierpinski Triangle-shaped boundary subregion in $AdS_4/CFT_3$. Due to existing no-go theorems in topological quantum error correction regarding fractal noise, this gives holographic codes a specific advantage over topological codes. We then further argue that a boundary subregion in the shape of the Sierpinski gasket in $AdS_5/CFT_4$ does not possess these holographic quantum error correction properties.
The problem of how the boundary encodes the bulk in AdS/CFT is still a subject of study today. One of the major issues that needs more elucidation is the problem of subregion duality; what information of the bulk a given boundary subregion encodes. Although the proof given by Dong, Harlow, and Wall states that the entanglement wedge of the bulk should be encoded in boundary subregions, no explicit procedure for reconstructing the entanglement wedge was given so far. In this paper, mode sum approach to obtaining smearing functions for a single bulk scalar is generalised to include bulk reconstr…
Causal shadows are bulk space-time regions between the entanglement wedges and the causal wedges, their existence encodes deep aspects of the entanglement wedge reconstruction in the context of subregion duality in AdS/CFT. In this paper, we study the perturbation theory of the causal shadows and their relation to the properties of the associated modular flows. We first revisit the cases of degenerate causal shadows based on known examples, and discuss the origin for their degeneracy via the local nature of the modular flow. We then focus on the perturbative case in which the CFT subregion con…
In this paper, we study the bulk local states in AdS/CFT correspondence in the large $N$ limit using the formula explicitly relating the bulk local operators and the CFT local operators. We identify the bulk local state in terms of CFT local states and find that the bulk local state corresponds to a CFT state supported in the whole space, which means a version of the subregion duality is not valid. On the other hand, CFT states supported in a space region are expressed in terms of the bulk states supported in a certain region. We find that the quantum error correction proposal is not realized …
We introduce a quantum notion of parallel transport between subsystems of a quantum state whose holonomies characterize the structure of entanglement. In AdS/CFT, entanglement holonomies are reflected in the bulk spacetime connection. When the subsystems are a pair of holographic CFTs in an entangled state, our quantum transport measures Wilson lines threading the dual wormhole. For subregions of a single CFT it is generated by the modular Berry connection and computes the effect of the AdS curvature on the transport of minimal surfaces. Our observation reveals a new aspect of the spacetime-en…
We consider AdS/CFT correspondence for time-dependent \II B backgrounds in this paper. The supergravity solutions we construct are supersymmetric pp-waves on AdS and may have null singularity in the bulk. The dual gauge theory is also constructed explicitly and is given by a time-dependent supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory living on the boundary. Apart from the usual terms that are dictated by the geometry, our gauge theory action features also a time-dependent axion coupling and a time-dependent gauge coupling. Both of which are necessary due to the presence of a nontrivial dilaton and axion p…
We present analytic methods for extracting a class of bulk geometries given information of certain physical quantities in the boundary CFT. More specifically we look at singular correlators and entanglement entropy in the CFT to provide information of null and spacelike geodesics repectively in the bulk. We show that static spherically symmetric, asymptotically AdS spacetimes which do not admit null circular orbits can be fully recovered, and that any spacetime can be recovered up to the local maximum of the potential. We provide analytical and numerical examples to verify the methods used.
We derive dynamics of the entanglement wedge cross section from the reflected entropy for local operator quench states in the holographic CFT. By comparing between the reflected entropy and the mutual information in this dynamical setup, we argue that (1) the reflected entropy can diagnose a new perspective of the chaotic nature for given mixed states and (2) it can also characterize classical correlations in the subregion/subregion duality. Moreover, we point out that we must improve the bulk interpretation of a heavy state even in the case of well-studied entanglement entropy. Finally, we sh…
We point out a connection between the emergence of bulk locality in AdS/CFT and the theory of quantum error correction. Bulk notions such as Bogoliubov transformations, location in the radial direction, and the holographic entropy bound all have natural CFT interpretations in the language of quantum error correction. We also show that the question of whether bulk operator reconstruction works only in the causal wedge or all the way to the extremal surface is related to the question of whether or not the quantum error correcting code realized by AdS/CFT is also a "quantum secret sharing scheme"…
In the context of AdS3/CFT2, we address spacetimes with a certain sort of internal infinity as typified by the extreme BTZ black hole. The internal infinity is a null circle lying at the end of the black hole's infinite throat. We argue that such spacetimes may be described by a product CFT of the form CFT-L * CFT-R, where CFT-R is associated with the asymptotically AdS boundary while CFT-L is associated with the null circle. Our particular calculations analyze the CFT dual of the extreme BTZ black hole in a linear toy model of AdS3/CFT2. Since the BTZ black hole is a quotient of AdS3, the dua…
We consider AdS gravity duals to CFT on background spacetimes with a null infinity. Null infinity on the conformal boundary may extend to an extremal horizon in the bulk. For example it does so for Poincare-AdS, although does not for planar Schwarzschild-AdS. If null infinity does extend into an extremal horizon in the bulk, we show that the bulk near-horizon geometry is determined by the geometry of the boundary null infinity. Hence the `infra-red' geometry of the bulk is fixed by the large scale behaviour of the CFT spacetime. In addition the boundary stress tensor must have a particular dec…
In higher derivative theories, gravity can travel slower or faster than light. With this feature in mind, we revisit the construction of the causal and entanglement wedges in this type of theories, and argue that they must be constructed using the fastest mode instead of null rays. We show that the property of causal wedge inclusion, i.e., the fact that the causal wedge must be contained in the entanglement wedge, leads to more stringent constraints on the couplings than those imposed by hyperbolicity and boundary causality. Our results imply that the full power of subregion-subregion duality …
In this Letter we prove a simple theorem in quantum information theory, which implies that bulk operators in the Anti-de Sitter / Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence can be reconstructed as CFT operators in a spatial subregion $A$, provided that they lie in its entanglement wedge. This is an improvement on existing reconstruction methods, which have at most succeeded in the smaller causal wedge. The proof is a combination of the recent work of Jafferis, Lewkowycz, Maldacena, and Suh on the quantum relative entropy of a CFT subregion with earlier ideas interpreting the correspondenc…
We study the compatibility of the AdS/CFT duality with the bulk and boundary causality, and derive a conformally invariant averaged null energy condition (CANEC) for quantum field theories in 3 and 5-dimensional curved boundaries. This is the generalization of the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) in Minkowski spacetime to curved boundaries, where null energy is averaged along the null line with appropriate weight for conformal invariance. For this purpose we take, as our guiding principle, the no-bulk-shortcut theorem of Gao and Wald, which essentially asserts that when going from one poi…
According to one of many equivalent definitions of twistors a (null) twistor is a null geodesic in Minkowski spacetime. Null geodesics can intersect at points (events). The idea of Penrose was to think of a spacetime point as a derived concept: points are obtained by considering the incidence of twistors. One needs two twistors to obtain a point. Twistor is thus a ``square root'' of a point. In the present paper we entertain the idea of quantizing the space of twistors. Twistors, and thus also spacetime points become operators acting in a certain Hilbert space. The algebra of functions on spac…
The Brown-York stress tensor provides a means for defining quasilocal gravitational charges in subregions bounded by a timelike hypersurface. We consider the generalization of this stress tensor to null hypersurfaces. Such a stress tensor can be derived from the on-shell subregion action of general relativity associated with a Dirichlet variational principle, which fixes an induced Carroll structure on the null boundary. The formula for the mixed-index tensor $T{}^i{}_j$ takes a remarkably simple form that is manifestly independent of the choice of auxiliary null vector at the null surface, an…
We study the action of the CFT total modular Hamiltonian on the CFT representation of bulk fields with spin. In the vacuum of the CFT the total modular Hamiltonian acts as a bulk Lie derivative, reducing on the RT surface to a boost perpendicular to the RT surface. This enables us to reconstruct bulk fields with spin from the CFT. On fields with gauge redundancies the total modular Hamiltonian acts as a bulk Lie derivative together with a compensating bulk gauge (or diffeomorphism) transformation to restore the original gauge. We consider the Lie algebra generated by the total modular Hamilton…
Ingoing and outgoing principal null geodesics in Kerr spacetimes are characterized as part of parametrized families of strings in complex Kerr geometry and are associated with holomorphic curves in twistor space with help of the Kerr theorem. They are defined on 2-dimensional twistor manifolds, one for outgoing and one for ingoing principal null congruences, and are solutions of free twistor string models on these 2-dimensional twistor manifolds. Such a twistor string model implies a conformal field theory and, assuming the applicability of the Cardy formula, agreement with the Bekenstein-Hawk…
It is shown that the deformed Seiberg-Witten curve equation after Fourier transform is mapped into a differential equation for the AGT dual 2d CFT cnformal block containing an extra completely degenerate field. We carefully match parameters in two sides of duality thus providing not only a simple independent prove of the AGT correspondence in Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit, but also an extension of AGT to the case when a secondary field is included in the CFT conformal block. Implications of our results in the study of monodromy problems for a large class of $n$'th order Fuchsian differential equa…
Following arXiv:1501.03019 [hep-th], we study de Sitter space and spherical subregions on a constant boundary Euclidean time slice of the future boundary in the Poincare slicing. We show that as in that case, complex extremal surfaces exist here as well: for even boundary dimensions, we isolate the universal coefficient of the logarithmically divergent term in the area of these surfaces. There are parallels with analytic continuation of the Ryu-Takayanagi expressions for holographic entanglement entropy in $AdS/CFT$. We then study the free energy of the dual Euclidean CFT on a sphere holograph…
In this paper we study the propagation of entanglement entropy after a global instantaneous quench on the CFT boundary of AdS bulk. We consider the Gauss-Bonnet model as a higher curvature gravity model for which we correct the RT(HRT) proposal to compute the holographic entanglement entropy(HEE). To obtain an analytical solution we perform an approximation approach which bounds our computations to the small subregions and we compare its thermalization regimes to the result of large subsystem case. We can see tsunami picture where the evolution of entanglement breaks down for the large systems…
We study one-loop bulk entanglement entropy in even spacetime dimensions using the heat kernel method, which captures the universal piece of entanglement entropy, a logarithmically divergent term in even dimensions. In four dimensions, we perform explicit calculations for various shapes of boundary subregions. In particular, for a cusp subregion with an arbitrary opening angle, we find that the bulk entanglement entropy always encodes the same universal information about the boundary theories as the leading entanglement entropy in the large N limit, up to a fixed proportional constant. By smoo…
We consider averaged null energy conditions (ANEC) for strongly coupled quantum field theories in even (two and four) dimensional curved spacetimes by applying the no-bulk-shortcut principle in the context of the AdS/CFT duality. In the same context but in odd-dimensions, the present authors previously derived a conformally invariant averaged null energy condition (CANEC), which is a version of the ANEC with a certain weight function for conformal invariance. In even-dimensions, however, one has to deal with gravitational conformal anomalies, which make relevant formulas much more complicated …
We study real-time correlators in the warped AdS/CFT correspondence. We apply the prescription used in the usual AdS/CFT correspondence and obtain the retarded Green's functions for the scalar and vector fields in the spacelike warped and the null warped black hole backgrounds. We find that the retarded Green's functions and the cross sections are well consistent with the predictions from dual CFT. Our results not only support strongly the conjectured warped AdS/CFT correspondence, but also show that the usual relativistic AdS/CFT prescription of obtaining the real-time correlators remain effe…
We study the reconstructability of (d+2)-dimensional bulk spacetime from (d+1)-dimensional boundary data, particularly concentrating on backgrounds which break (d+1)-dimensional Lorentz invariance. For a large class of such spacetimes, there exist null geodesics which do not reach the boundary. Therefore classically we expect some information is trapped in the bulk and thus invisible at the boundary. We show that this classical intuition correctly predicts the quantum situation: whenever there are null geodesics which do not reach the boundary, there are also "trapped scalar modes" whose bound…
