I address the effect that a temperature dependent potential has on the suppression of heavy quarkonia states in deconfined hadronic matter. I focus on a simple medium: a homogenous, fixed temperature and deconfined system with a finite lifetime (QGP-brick). Assuming that all the interactions of a heavy quark anti-quark ($Q-\bar Q$) pair with the medium can be recast into an in-medium potential, I solve the time dependent Schrödinger equation to evolve the density matrix which describes the hard pair production and its connection to the final distribution of hadrons after the medium disappears. For those temperatures in which bound states survive in the medium, I find a non-trivial dependence of the production of excited quarkonia states on the in-medium levels, due to the mixing of vacuum and in-medium wave functions. This mixing leads, in particular, to the enhancement of the relative abundance of 2S to 1S states for those systems in which the in-medium ground state of the $Q-\bar Q$ system is dissolved or close to threshold. I also explore quarkonia production in a non-homogeneous expanding medium and find that the finite formation time effects arising from the low binding energies of in-medium states lead to the insensitivity of the heavy mesons yield to the hottest part of the system evolution.
Emphasizing the possibility of moderate suppression of heavy quarkonium states, we invite some attention towards the issue of real time evolution of quarkonia during the cooling phase of quark gluon plasma(QGP). In this context, we have used time dependent perturbation theory to show that $Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$, $J/Ψ$ can further be dissociated in the medium at a temperature below their dissociation thresholds even though they survive the Debye screening. We have presented and compared the dissociation probabilities and dissociation rates of these states in real and complex valued potential in this …
We summarize results of recent studies of heavy quarkonia correlators and spectral functions at finite temperatures from lattice QCD and systematic T-matrix studies using QCD motivated finite-temperature potentials. We argue that heavy quarkonia dissociation shall occur in the temperature range $1.2 \le T_d/T_c \le 1.5$ by the interplay of both screening and absorption in the strongly correlated plasma medium. We discuss these effects on the quantum mechanical evolution of quarkonia states within a time-dependent harmonic oscillator model with complex oscillator strength and compare the result…
Quarkonia are some of the most important probes of the medium created in relativistic heavy ion collision experiments, but it is still difficult to get quantitative results for its behavior in the plasma. Here I discuss the decay width of a heavy quarkonium system, and calculate the gluodissociation width of bottomonia. In the end I comment on study of quarkonia as open quantum systems.
We present a modified colour screening model for $J/ψ$ suppression in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) using quasi-particle model (QPM) as equation of state (EOS). Other theoretical ingredients incorporated in the model are feed-down from higher resonances namely, $χ_c$, and $ψ^{'}$, dilated formation time for quarkonia and viscous effects of the QGP medium. Assuming further that the QGP is expanding with Bjorken's hydrodynamical expansion, the present model is used to analyze the centrality dependence of the $J/ψ$ suppression in mid-rapidity region and compare it with the data obtained from SPS, …
We have implemented the LPM effect into a microscopic transport model with partonic degrees of freedom by following the algorithm of Zapp & Wiedemann. The Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect is a quantum interference process that modifies the emission of radiation in the presence of a dense medium. In QCD this results in a quadratic length dependence for radiative energy loss. This is an important effect for the modification of jets by their passage through the QGP. We verify the leading parton energy loss in the model against the leading order Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff-Zakharo…
A thermal potential can be defined to facilitate understanding the behavior of quarkonia in quark-gluon plasma. A nonperturbative evaluation of this potential from lattice QCD is difficult, as it involves real-time corelation function, and has often involved the use of Bayesian analysis, with its associated systematics. In this work we show that using the properties of the static quarkonia thermal correlation functions, one can directly extract a thermal potential for quarkonia from Euclidean Wilson loop data. This leads to a controlled extraction, and allows us to judge the suitability of var…

In relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC, a quark gluon plasma (QGP) is created for a short duration of about 10fm/c. Quarkonia (bound states of $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$) are sensitive probes of this phase on length scales comparable to the size of the bound states which are less than 1fm. Observations of quarkonia in these collisions provide us with a lot of information about how the presence of a QGP affects various quarkonium states. This has motivated the development of the theory of heavy quarks and their bound states in a thermal medium, and its application to the phenom…
We study different processes responsible for the modification of quarkonia yields in the medium produced in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The quarkonia and heavy flavour cross sections are estimated using the measurements in pp collisions at LHC energies and shadowing corrections are obtained using the EPS09 parametrizations. A kinetic model is used which incorporates quarkonia suppression inside the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), suppression due to hadronic comovers, and regeneration from recombination of heavy quark pairs. The quarkonia dissociation cross section due to gluon col…

The non-equilibrium properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) have been a topic of intensive research. In this contribution, we explore the nature of heavy quarkonia immersed in a QGP with bulk viscosity. We incorporate the bulk viscous effect through the deformation of the distribution functions of thermal quarks and gluons, with which the color dielectric permittivity can be computed. We use the color dielectric permittivity to compute the heavy quark potential inside a bulk viscous plasma and solve the Schrödinger equation using the potential to obtain the physical properties such as binding e…
This is an introduction to the study of the in-medium behavior of quarkonia and its application to the quark-gluon plasma search in high energy nuclear collisions.
We estimate the modification of quarkonia yields due to different processes in the medium produced in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energy. The quarkonia and heavy flavour cross sections calculated up to next-to-leading order (NLO) are used in the study. Shadowing corrections are obtained with the NLO EPS09 parametrization. A kinetic model is employed which incorporates quarkonia suppression inside a QGP, suppression due to hadronic comovers, and regeneration from charm pairs. The quarkonia dissociation cross section due to gluon collisions has been considered and the regeneration rate has been obta…
Rapid thermalization in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions leads to fast changing potential between a heavy quark and antiquark from zero temperature potential to the finite temperature one. Time dependent perturbation theory can then be used to calculate the survival probability of the initial quarkonium state. In view of very short time scales of thermalization at RHIC and LHC energies, we calculate the survival probability of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ using sudden approximation. Our results show that quarkonium decay may be significant even when temperature of QGP remains low enough so that the co…
We present a brief report on a thought experiment in which an incident energetic parton traverses a brick of quark-gluon plasma (QGP), see arXiv:1808.03250 for the full report. We calculate the probability of detecting a parton showing up at a large angle with respect to its initial direction due to scattering with the constituents of QGP, using leading order perturbative QCD. We include all relevant channels, including the Rutherford-like channel as considered in early works, and those that are not Rutherford-like but become important at a large angle. The resulting probability distributions …
Some aspects of heavy flavor probes of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) including quarkonia and open heavy flavor D- and B-mesons, aimed to study the properties of QGP, are discussed in this lecture note.
The strong suppression of heavy quarkonia is a good indicator that one has generated a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in an ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision. Recent advancements in first principles calculations of the heavy quark potential provide additional insight into this suppression and can be used to further pin down the in-medium properties of the QGP. Realistic 3+1d dissipative hydrodynamical models can be used to simulate the QGP and, with bottomonium as a probe, one can make inferences for the initial temperature of the QGP and other phenomenological parameters such as the shear visco…
Measurements made at the LHC have shown that the production of the ${\rm J}/ψ$, $ψ$(2S), $Υ$(1S) and $Υ$(2S) quarkonia is suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, with respect to the extrapolation of the pp production yields. The $ψ$(2S) and $Υ$(2S) states are more strongly suppressed than the ground states and the level of the suppression changes with the centrality of the collision. We show that the measured patterns can be reproduced by a simple model, where all quarkonia are treated in a unified way, starting from the recent realisation that, in pp collisions, the probability of quarkonium formatio…
Quarkonia were predicted to be suppressed in the "hot" deconfined matter known as the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), but they were also seen to suffer from "cold" nuclear matter effects (parton shadowing, nuclear absorption...). Both at SPS and RHIC, suppression beyond nuclear effects was observed, but the rapidity dependence of the RHIC result is not easy to interpret. I review here the current status of these results, their possible interpretations and the new measurements that could provide insights on quarkonia suppression. Some of them were presented at this conference.
The spectroscopic properties of heavy quarkonia are substantially different in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that is created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions as compared to the vacuum situation that can be tested in pp collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. In this article, a series of recent works about the dissociation of the Y(nS) and chi_b(nP) states in the hot QGP is summarized. Quarkonia dissociation occurs due to (1) screening of the real quark-antiquark potential, (2) collisional damping through the imaginary part of the potential, and (3) gluon-induced dissociation. In addit…
Direct probes for the QGP must be hard enough to resolve sub-hadronic scales ($\ll \la^{-1}$) and distinguish confined and deconfined media. This can be achieved by fast colour charges (jets) and heavy quark resonances (quarkonia). After a general survey, we study quarkonia as confinement probe and show in particular that confined matter is transparent, deconfined matter opaque to \J's.
Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), a QCD state of matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, has remarkable properties, including, for example, a low shear viscosity over entropy ratio. By detecting the collection of low-momentum particles that arise from the collision, it is possible to gain quantitative insight into the created matter. However, its fast evolution and thermalization properties remain elusive. Only using high momentum objects as probes of QGP can unveil its constituents at different wavelengths. In this review, we attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of what was, …
Heavy-ion collisions at very high colliding energies are expected to produce a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at the highest temperature obtainable in a laboratory setting. Experimental studies of these reactions can provide an unprecedented range of information on properties of the QGP at high temperatures. We report theoretical investigations of the physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at a future high-energy collider. These include initial parton production, collective expansion of the dense medium, jet quenching, heavy-quark transport, dissociation and regeneration of quarkonia, photon a…
We study heavy-quarkonia suppression under final-state multiple scatterings in most central Au~+~Au collisions at RHIC energy. We first calculate the survival probability of a heavy quarkonium under multiple scattering in Bjorken's expanding QGP at large $N_c$. Then, we calculate the rapidity dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ for heavy-quarkonia production by considering final-state multiple scatterings in most central Au~+~Au collisions in a simplified model. In our formula a constant $P_0$ is also introduced to estimate the possible cold nuclear effects. By fitting the d…

Transport and Langevin equations are employed to study hadronic medium effects on charmonium elliptic flows in heavy-ion collisions. In Pb-Pb collisions, the anisotropic energy density of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in the transverse plane is transformed into hadron momentum anisotropy after the phase transition. Charmonia with high transverse momentum $p_T$ are produced via the primordial hard process and undergo different degrees of dissociation along different paths in the QGP. They then scatter with light hadrons in the hadron phase. Both contributions to the charmonium elliptic flows are…
Dissociation of quarkonium in quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is a long standing topic in relativistic heavy-ion collisions because it has been believed to signal one of the fundamental natures of the QGP -- Debye screening due to the liberation of color degrees of freedom. Among recent new theoretical developments is the application of open quantum system framework to quarkonium in the QGP. Open system approach enables us to describe how dynamical as well as static properties of QGP influences the time evolution of quarkonium in a coherent way. Currently, there are several master equations for quark…
We had been gradually working towards building a comprehensive quarkonia suppression formalism to explain all 3 dependencies of quarkonium suppression obtained from heavy-ion collision experiments. We present here the improved version of quarkonia suppression framework. It assumes bottomonia produced in the early stage which dissociates due to color screening, gluonic dissociation, and collisional damping in addition to the shadowing as an initial state effect. The QGP medium formed in the collisions is assumed to evolve under ($3+1$)-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamics which is mod…
Data driven studies of heavy-ion results has played a big role in highlighting interesting features of these complex systems. In this proceeding, a simple QGP-brick interpretation of the $R_{\rm AA}$ and $v_{2}$ at high $p_{\rm T}$ ($p_{\rm T} \approx 10$ GeV/c) is presented. This interpretation draws attention to two fundamental questions: is there an effect of the asymmetric QGP expansion on the $v_{2}$ at high $p_{\rm T}$? is there an energy loss difference between quarks and gluons? Finally, it is discussed how these studies can be extended using Event-Shape Engineering and how they can be…
We study quantitatively the formation and evolution of B_c bound states in a space-time domain of deconfined quarks and gluons (quark-gluon plasma, QGP). At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) one expects for the first time that typical central collisions will result in multiple pairs of heavy (in this case charmed) quarks. This provides a new mechanism for the formation of heavy quarkonia which depends on the properties of the deconfined region. We find typical enhancements of about 500 fold for the B_c production yields over expectations from the elementary coherent hadronic B_c-meson…
By finding rare (but not exponentially rare) large-angle deflections of partons within a jet produced in a heavy ion collision, or of such a jet itself, experimentalists can find the weakly coupled short-distance quark and gluon particles (scatterers) within the strongly coupled liquid quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy ion collisions. This is the closest one can come to probing QGP via a scattering experiment and ultimately learning how a strongly coupled liquid emerges from an asymptotically free gauge theory. The short-distance, particulate, structure of liquid QGP can be revealed i…
Before wondering about the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), one has to take into account various cold (normal) nuclear matter effects, that can be probed through p+A like collisions. This article aims at reviewing the current results (and understanding) of these effects on heavy quarks and quarkonia production.
The suppression of heavy quarkonia e.g. $J/ψ$, $Υ$ etc. is considered as a suitable probe to identify the nature of the matter created in heavy ion collisions. Recently we have presented a modified colour screening model for $J/ψ$ suppression in the quark gluon plasma (QGP) using quasiparticle model as the equation of state. In this paper, we extend our model to calculate the anomalous suppression of various states of $Υ$ arising due to QGP medium alone. We obtain the suppression patterns of different bottomonia states with respect to centrality at various available collision energies and comp…
The radiative energy loss of fast partons traveling through the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is commonly studied within perturbative QCD (pQCD). Nonperturbative (NP) effects, which are expected to become important near the critical temperature, have been much less investigated. Here, we utilize a recently developed $T$-matrix approach to incorporate NP effects for gluon emission off heavy quarks propagating through the QGP. We set up four cases that contain, starting from a Born diagram calculation with color-Coulomb interaction, an increasing level of NP components, by subsequently including (rem…
The potential between a heavy quark and an anti-quark inside the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is studied on the basis of the gauge/gravity duality. A real-time complex potential V_{Q\bar{Q}}(t,r) is derived from the Wilson loop with the Euclidean five-dimensional anti-de-Sitter black hole metric. To make the analytic continuation from the imaginary time to the real time, specific variational configurations of the string world sheet in the Euclidean metric are introduced. Rapid approach of V_{Q\bar{Q}}(t,r) to its stationary value is found at the time scale t=1/πT independent of the 't Hooft coupli…
We introduce a framework called Heavy Quarkonium Quantum Dynamics (HQQD) which can be used to compute the dynamical suppression of heavy quarkonia propagating in the quark-gluon plasma using real-time in-medium quantum evolution. Using HQQD we compute large sets of real-time solutions to the Schrödinger equation using a realistic in-medium complex-valued potential. We sample 2 million quarkonia wave packet trajectories and evolve them through the QGP using HQQD to obtain their survival probabilities. The computation is performed using three different HQQD model parameter sets in order to estim…
Deconfined QCD matter in heavy-ion collisions has been a topic of paramount interest for many years. Quarkonia suppression in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments indicate the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation in such collisions. Recent experiments at LHC has given some indications of hot matter effect in asymmetric p$-$Pb nuclear collisions. Here, we employ a theoretical model to investigate the bottomonium suppression in Pb$-$Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$, $5.02$ TeV, and in p$-$Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV center-of-m…
