Quarkonia were predicted to be suppressed in the "hot" deconfined matter known as the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), but they were also seen to suffer from "cold" nuclear matter effects (parton shadowing, nuclear absorption...). Both at SPS and RHIC, suppression beyond nuclear effects was observed, but the rapidity dependence of the RHIC result is not easy to interpret. I review here the current status of these results, their possible interpretations and the new measurements that could provide insights on quarkonia suppression. Some of them were presented at this conference.
In the fractional nonrelativistic potential model, the decomposition of heavy quarkonium in a hot magnetized medium is investigated. The analytical solution of the fractional radial Schrodinger equation for the hot-magnetized interaction potential is displayed by using the conformable fractional Nikiforov-Uvarov method. Analytical expressions for the energy eigenvalues and the radial wave function are obtained for arbitrary quantum numbers. Next, we study the charmonium and bottmonium binding energies for different magnetic field values in the thermal medium. The effect of the fractional param…
Recently there is a resurrection in the study of heavy quark bound states in a hot and baryonless matter with an ambient magnetic field but the matter produced at heavy-ion collider experiments is not perfectly baryonless, so we wish to explore the effect of small baryon asymmetry on the properties of heavy quarkonia immersed in a strongly magnetized hot quark matter. Therefore, we have first revisited the structure of gluon self-energy tensor in the above environment to compute the resummed propagator for gluons. This resummed propagator embodies the properties of medium, which gets translate…
According to the usual application of the sequential-suppression picture to the dynamics of heavy quarkonia in the hot medium formed in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions, quark-antiquark pairs created in a given bound or unbound state remain in that same state as the medium evolves. We argue that this scenario implicitly assumes an adiabatic evolution of the quarkonia, and we show that the validity of the adiabaticity assumption is questionable.
We compute the energy loss of heavy quarkonia in high temperature QCD plasmas and investigate the energy loss effects on quarkonium suppression. Based on the effective vertex derived from the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude for quarkonium, the collisional and radiative energy loss are determined by quarkonium-gluon elastic scattering and the associated gluon-bremsstrahlung, respectively. In the energy regime $E<m_Υ^2/T$ the collisional energy loss is dominant over the radiative one, and the total energy loss increases with the plasma temperature and the initial energy of quarkonium. Our numerical ana…
Before wondering about the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), one has to take into account various cold (normal) nuclear matter effects, that can be probed through p+A like collisions. This article aims at reviewing the current results (and understanding) of these effects on heavy quarks and quarkonia production.
The problem of quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions presents a set of unique theoretical challenges -- from the relevant production mechanism of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ to the relative significance of distinct cold and hot nuclear matter effects in the observed attenuation of quarkonia. Inthese proceedings we summarize recent work on the generalization of non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD) to include off-shell gluon (Glauber/Coulomb) interactions in strongly interacting matter. This new effective theory provides for the first time a universal microscopic description of the in-mediu…
We study heavy-quarkonia suppression under final-state multiple scatterings in most central Au~+~Au collisions at RHIC energy. We first calculate the survival probability of a heavy quarkonium under multiple scattering in Bjorken's expanding QGP at large $N_c$. Then, we calculate the rapidity dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ for heavy-quarkonia production by considering final-state multiple scatterings in most central Au~+~Au collisions in a simplified model. In our formula a constant $P_0$ is also introduced to estimate the possible cold nuclear effects. By fitting the d…
For heavy quarkonia of moderate energy, we generalize the relevant successful theory, non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD), to include interactions in nuclear matter. The new resulting theory, NRQCD with Glauber gluons, provides for the first time a universal microscopic description of the interaction of heavy quarkonia with a strongly interacting medium, consistently applicable to a range of phases, such as cold nuclear matter, dense hadron gas, and quark-gluon plasma. The effective field theory we present in this work is derived from first principles and is an important step forwa…
Quarkonia are the central objects to explore the non-perturbative nature of non-abelian gauge theories. We describe the confinement-deconfinement phases for heavy quarkonia in a hot QCD medium and thereby the statistical nature of the inter-quark forces. In the sense of one-loop quantum effects, we propose that the "quantum" nature of quark matters follows directly from the thermodynamic consideration of Richardson potential. Thereby we gain an understanding of the formation of hot and dense states of quark gluon plasma matter in heavy ion collisions and the early universe. In the case of the …
Quarkonium production has been considered as a tool to study the medium formed in high energy nuclear collisions, assuming that the formation of a hot and dense environment modifies the production pattern observed in elementary collisions. The basic features measured there are the relative fractions of hidden to open heavy flavor and the relative fractions of the different hidden heavy flavor states. Hence the essential question is if and how these quantities are modified in nuclear collisions. We show how the relevant data must be calibrated, i.e., what reference has to be used, in order to d…
In this lecture we apply a thermodynamic Green function formalism developed in the context of nonrelativistic plasma physics for the case of heavy quarkonia states in strongly correlated quark matter. Besides the traditional explanation of charmonium suppresion by Debye screening of the strong interaction, we discuss further effects of relevance when heavy quarkonia states propagate in a medium where strong correlations persist in the form of hadronic resonances. These effects may be absorbed in the definition of a plasma Hamiltonian, which was the main result of this work. This plasma Hamilto…
At the chiral restoration/deconfinement transition, most hadrons undergo a Mott transition from being bound states in the confined phase to resonances in the deconfined phase. We investigate the consequences of this qualitative change in the hadron spectrum on final state interactions of charmonium in hot and dense matter, and show that the Mott effect for D-mesons leads to a critical enhancement of the J/$ψ$ dissociation rate. Anomalous J/psi suppression in the NA50 experiment is discussed as well as the role of the Mott effect for the heavy flavor kinetics in future experiments at the LHC. T…
We review the progress achieved in extracting the properties of hot and dense matter from relativistic heavy ion collisions at the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the large hadron collider (LHC) at CERN. We focus on bulk properties of the medium, in particular the evidence for thermalization, aspects of the equation of state, transport properties, as well as fluctuations and correlations. We also discuss the in-medium properties of hadrons with light and heavy quarks, and measurements of dileptons and quarkonia. This review is dedicated to the memor…
I address the effect that a temperature dependent potential has on the suppression of heavy quarkonia states in deconfined hadronic matter. I focus on a simple medium: a homogenous, fixed temperature and deconfined system with a finite lifetime (QGP-brick). Assuming that all the interactions of a heavy quark anti-quark ($Q-\bar Q$) pair with the medium can be recast into an in-medium potential, I solve the time dependent Schrödinger equation to evolve the density matrix which describes the hard pair production and its connection to the final distribution of hadrons after the medium disappears.…
We study how local fluctuations in the initial states of relativistic heavy-ion collisions manifest themselves in the correlations between different orders of harmonic moments of the density profiles, particularly those involving only odd harmonics which purely arise from initial state fluctuations. We find the strengths of those correlations are sensitive to the number of hot and cold spots in the initial states. Hydrodynamic evolution of the fireball translates initial state geometric anisotropies as well as their correlations into final state momentum anisotropies and correlations. We concl…
We show that a recently proposed extension of the MSSM can provide a scenario where both the cold and hot dark matter of the universe owe their origin to a single scale connected with the breakdown of the global B-L symmetry. The susy partner of the majoron and the light Majorana neutrinos are the cold and hot dark matter candidates respectively in this model and their desired relative abundances emerge when the scale of B-L symmetry breaking is in the TeV range.
A simple model of the Majorana neutrino with the see-saw mechanism is studied, assuming that two light neutrinos are the hot dark matters with equal mass of 2.4 eV in the cold plus hot dark matter model of cosmology. We find that the heavy neutrino, which is the see-saw partner with the remaining one light neutrino, can be the cold dark matter, if the light neutrino is exactly massless. This cold dark matter neutrino is allowed to have the mass of the wide range from 5.9 x 10^2 eV to 2.2 x 10^7 eV.
The effect of parton energy loss in cold nuclear matter on the suppression of quarkonia (J/psi, Upsilon) in heavy-ion collisions is investigated, by extrapolating a model based on coherent radiative energy loss recently shown to describe successfully J/psi and Upsilon suppression in proton-nucleus collisions. Model predictions in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC (Au-Au, Cu-Cu, and Cu-Au) and LHC (Pb-Pb) show a sizable suppression arising from the sole effect of energy loss in cold matter. This effect should thus be considered in order to get a reliable baseline for cold nuclear matter effects in q…
Measurements made at the LHC have shown that the production of the ${\rm J}/ψ$, $ψ$(2S), $Υ$(1S) and $Υ$(2S) quarkonia is suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, with respect to the extrapolation of the pp production yields. The $ψ$(2S) and $Υ$(2S) states are more strongly suppressed than the ground states and the level of the suppression changes with the centrality of the collision. We show that the measured patterns can be reproduced by a simple model, where all quarkonia are treated in a unified way, starting from the recent realisation that, in pp collisions, the probability of quarkonium formatio…
Integrated and differential $J/ψ R_{AA}$ are systematically studied in Au-Au collisions at RHIC-BES energies in a transport approach, including cold and hot nuclear effects respectively in the initial condition and the collision terms. With decreasing energy, while the temperature, life time and size of the QGP fireball decrease, the nuclear absorption of the initially produced charmonia is more and more strong, and the nuclear shadowing effect on charmonium regeneration goes to anti-shadowing first and then to shadowing again. As a competition between the cold and hot nuclear effects, the QGP…
In this work, we present an updated study about the interactions of quarkonia with surrounding hadronic medium. The meson-meson interactions are described with a chiral effective Lagrangian within the framework of unitarized coupled channel amplitudes. In particular, we extend a previous work performed in the charmonium sector by calculating the cross-sections for $Υ$ scattering by light pseudoscalar mesons ($π, K, η$) and vector mesons ($ρ, K^\ast, ω$). We evaluate the relevant channels and compare the results with existing literature. The analysis is completed by including the finite-tempera…
The origin of dark matter in the universe may be scalar particles produced by amplification of quantum fluctuations during a period of dilaton-driven inflation. We show, for the first time, that a single species of particles, depending on its mass and interactions, can be a source of both cold and hot dark matter simultaneously. Detection of such weakly interacting particles with masses below a fraction of an eV presents a new challenge for dark matter searches.
The presence of a hot dark matter component has been hinted at 3 sigma by a combination of the results from different cosmological observations. We examine a possibility that pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons account for both hot and cold dark matter components. We show that the QCD axions can do the job for the axion decay constant f_a < O(10^10) GeV, if they are produced by the saxion decay and the domain wall annihilation. We also investigate the cases of thermal QCD axions, pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons coupled to the standard model sector through the Higgs portal, and axions produced by modul…
We show how hot QCD equations of states can be adapted to make definite predictions for quark-gluon plasma at RHIC. We consider equations of state up to $O(g^5)$ and $O[g^6(ln(1/g)+δ)]$. Our method involves the extraction of equilibrium distribution functions for gluons and quarks from these equations of state by capturing the the interaction effects entirely in the effective chemical potentials. We further utilize these distribution functions to study the screening length in hot QCD and dissociation phenomenon of heavy quarkonia states by combining this understanding with the semi-classical t…
As experimentalists step up their pursuit of cold dark matter particles and neutrino masses, cosmological constraints are tightening. We compute the joint constraints on 11 cosmological parameters from cosmic microwave background and large scale structure data, and find that at 95% confidence, the total (cold+hot) dark matter density is h^2 Omega_dark = 0.20 +.12 -.10 with at most 38% of it being hot (due to neutrinos). A few assumptions, including negligible neutrinos, tighten this measurement to h^2 Omega_dark = 0.13 +0.04 -0.02, i.e, 2.4e-27 kg/m^3 give or take 20%.
The E814-collaboration has found a component of very low $m_t$ $K^+$ mesons with a slope parameter of $T \sim 15 \, \rm MeV$. We will present a scenario which explains the observed slope parameter and which allows us to predict the expected slope parameter for kaons produced in heavier systems such as Au+Au. Implications for the restoration of chiral symmetry in relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed.(figures are being sent on request)
The probability distribution D(epsilon) in the energy loss incurred by incoming and outgoing hard quarks in a QCD medium is computed numerically from the BDMPS gluon spectrum. It is shown to follow an empirical log-normal behavior which allows us to give the quenching weight a simple analytic parameterization. The dependence of our results under the infrared and ultraviolet sensitivity of the gluon spectrum is investigated as well. Finally, as an illustration, we discuss and compare estimates for the quenching of hadron spectra in nuclear matter and in a quark-gluon plasma to HERA and RHIC pre…
Multiple parton interactions in relativistic heavy ion reactions result in transverse momentum diffusion and medium induced non-Abelian energy loss of the hard probes traversing cold and hot nuclear matter. A systematic study of the interplay of nuclear effects on the $p_T \geq 2$ GeV inclusive hadron spectra demonstrates that the competition between nuclear shadowing, multiple scattering and jet quenching leads to distinctly different enhancement/suppression of moderate and high-$p_T$ hadron production in $d+Au$ and $Au+Au$ collisions at RHIC. The associated increase of di-jet acoplanarity, m…
We show that hidden hot dark matter, hidden-sector dark matter with interactions that decouple when it is relativistic, is a viable dark matter candidate provided it has never been in thermal equilibrium with the particles of the standard model. This hidden hot dark matter may reheat to a lower temperature and number density than the visible Universe and thus account, simply with its thermal abundance, for all the dark matter in the Universe while evading the typical constraints on hot dark matter arising from structure formation. We find masses ranging from ~3 keV to ~10 TeV. While never in e…
We study the propagation of a color singlet q\bar{q} pair undergoing multiple scatterings in hot and cold QCD matter. The interaction of the dipole with the nucleus or plasma is described with the McLerran-Venugopalan and Gyulassy-Wang models respectively. We find identical results when expressed in terms of the saturation momentum of either the nucleus or the plasma. We compare two kinds of multiple scatterings, elastic and inelastic with respect to the target. When allowing the target to scatter inelastically, the difference with the elastic case is suppressed by a 1/N^2_c factor. We also di…
Medium modification of parton fragmentation functions induced by multiple scattering and gluon bremsstrahlung is shown to describe the recent HERMES data in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) very well, providing the first evidence of $A^{2/3}$-dependence of the modification. The energy loss is found to be $<dE/dL> \approx 0.5$ GeV/fm for a 10-GeV quark in a $Au$ nucleus. Including the effect of expansion, analysis of the $π^0$ spectra in central $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=130$ GeV yields an averaged energy loss equivalent to $<dE/dL> \approx 7.3$ GeV/fm in a static medium. Predictions for…
We investigate the thermal relics as hot, warm and cold dark matter in $\mathscr{L}=\varepsilon^{2-2β}R^β+{16π}m_{\text{Pl}}^{-2}\mathscr{L}_m$ gravity, where $\varepsilon$ is a constant balancing the dimension of the field equation, and $1<β<(4+\sqrt{6})/5$ for the positivity of energy density and temperature. If light neutrinos serve as hot/warm relics, the entropic number of statistical degrees of freedom $g_{*s}$ at freeze-out and thus the predicted fractional energy density $Ω_ψh^2$ are $β-$dependent, which relaxes the standard mass bound $Σm_ν$. For cold relics, by exactly solve the simp…
Cold + Hot Dark Matter (CHDM) $Ω=1$ cosmological models require a total neutrino mass $\sim 5$ eV. Because recent data support the $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ oscillation explanation of the cosmic ray $ν_μ$ deficit, which requires that $m(ν_μ) \approx m(ν_τ)$, this suggests that $m(ν_μ) \approx m(ν_τ) \approx 2.4$ eV. The linear calculations and N-body simulation reported here indicate that an $Ω=1$ CHDM model with two 2.4 eV neutrinos (designated C$ν^2$DM) agrees remarkably well with all available observations, but only if the Hubble parameter $h \approx 0.5$. We also show that even one 2.4 eV neutrino rais…
The spectroscopic properties of heavy quarkonia are substantially different in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that is created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions as compared to the vacuum situation that can be tested in pp collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. In this article, a series of recent works about the dissociation of the Y(nS) and chi_b(nP) states in the hot QGP is summarized. Quarkonia dissociation occurs due to (1) screening of the real quark-antiquark potential, (2) collisional damping through the imaginary part of the potential, and (3) gluon-induced dissociation. In addit…
The cold plus hot dark matter (CHDM) model is arguably the best theory we currently have for a consistent description of the observed large scale structure formation. This is especially true if the primordial density fluctuations are assumed to be essentially scale invariant, in which case a mixture with 20-25 % HDM, 5- 10 % baryons, and the rest in CDM correctly predicted (in 1989) the quadrupole anisotropy measured a few years later by the COBE satellite. After a brief historical introduction, we present a model of supersymmetric inflation in which the CHDM model is neatly realized with a sp…
The Zeldovich approximation is applied to study the accretion of hot and cold dark matter onto moving long strings. It is assumed that such defects carry a substantial amount of small-scale structure, thereby acting gravitationally as a Newtonian line source whose effects dominate the velocity perturbations. Analytical expressions for the turn-around surfaces are derived and the mass inside of these surfaces is calculated. Estimates are given for the redshift dependence of $Ω_{nl}$, the fraction of mass in nonlinear objects. Depending on parameters, it is possible to obtain $Ω_{nl} = 1$ at the…
We study the spectrum of gravitational waves produced by a first order phase transition in a hidden sector that is colder than the visible sector. In this scenario, bubbles of the hidden sector vacuum can be nucleated through either thermal fluctuations or quantum tunnelling. If a cold hidden sector undergoes a thermally induced transition, the amplitude of the gravitational wave signal produced will be suppressed and its peak frequency shifted compared to if the hidden and visible sector temperatures were equal. This could lead to signals in a frequency range that would otherwise be ruled out…
We calculate the incoherent resonant and non-resonant scattering production of sterile neutrinos in the early universe. We find ranges of sterile neutrino masses, vacuum mixing angles, and initial lepton numbers which allow these species to constitute viable hot, warm, and cold dark matter (HDM, WDM, CDM) candidates which meet observational constraints. The constraints considered here include energy loss in core collapse supernovae, energy density limits at big bang nucleosynthesis, and those stemming from sterile neutrino decay: limits from observed cosmic microwave background anisotropies, d…
We discuss the interplay of screening, absorption and regeneration effects, on the quantum mechanical evolution of quarkonia states, within a time-dependent harmonic oscillator (THO) model with complex oscillator strength. We compare the results with data for R_AA/R_AA(CNM) from CERN and RHIC experiments. In the absence of a measurement of cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects at LHC we estimate their role and interpret the recent data from the ALICE experiment. We also discuss the temperature dependence of the real and imaginary parts of the oscillator frequency which stand for screening and abso…
Mixed cold-hot dark matter cosmological models (CHDM) with $Ω_{tot}=1$, approximately flat initial spectrum of adiabatic perturbations and 1, 2 or 3 types of massive neutrinos are compared and tested using recent observational data. The models with 2 or 3 neutrino types of equal mass permit as the best fit larger values of both the Hubble constant ($H_0\le 60$ for 2 types, $H_0\le 65$ for 3 types) and the total $Ω_ν$ (up to 0.3 for 3 types) than the model with 1 massive type. Also, they have less problems with abundances of early compact objects including $Ly-α$ clouds.
The complete quasi-particle spectrum of a magnetized electromagnetic plasma is systematically explored at zero and nonzero temperatures. To this purpose, the general structure of the one-loop corrected propagator of magnetized fermions is determined, and the dispersion relations arising from the pole of this propagator are numerically solved. It turns out that in the lowest Landau level, where only one spin direction is allowed, the spectrum consists of one positively (negatively) charged fermionic mode with positive (negative) spin. In contrast, in higher Landau levels, as an indirect consequ…
