We performed a series of resistivity measurements of a MnSi single crystal at high pressures, created by a piston-cylinder device with a liquid pressure medium. The form of the resistivity curve at ambient pressure clearly indicates a first order nature of the magnetic phase transition in MnSi. Application of high pressure shows fast degradation of the first order features of the phase transition. The temperature derivative of resistivity demonstrates two notable features of the phase transition that disappear on pressure increasing. They are a sharp peak marking the first order phase transition and a shallow maximum, situated slightly above the critical temperature and pointing to the domain of prominent helical fluctuations. The current experimental data rule out any strong first order phase transition in MnSi at high pressures and low temperatures, which would prevent development of a quantum critical region. On the contrary, there should exist true quantum critical phenomena in MnSi at high pressures because a tiny first order transition, if it survives at high pressures to the lowest temperature, hardly could suppress the entire quantum critical region.
Attention is drawn to a possibility to obtain the monochiral helimagnet MnSi in a magnetic single domain state (SDS) in zero magnetic field limit. It is shown that this metastable zero field magnetic SDS can be achieved by gradual decrease of the field down to zero after initial transformation of MnSi to a spin-polarized state in high fields $H$. This can be achieved only for $\bf{H}\parallel$ [111]. Investigations of MnSi in magnetic SDS give us a possibility to determine the two components of low field magnetic susceptibility of this compound, $χ_{\perp}(T)$ and $χ_{\parallel}(T)$ [$χ_{\perp…
We report spherical neutron polarimetry (SNP) and discuss the spin-flip scattering cross sections as well as the chiral fraction $η$ close to the helimagnetic transition in MnSi. For our study, we have developed a miniaturised SNP device that allows fast data collection when used in small angle scattering geometry with an area detector. Critical spin-flip scattering is found to be governed by chiral paramagnons that soften on a sphere in momentum space. Carefully accounting for the incoherent spin-flip background, we find that the resulting chiral fraction $η$ decreases gradually above the hel…
The heat capacity of helical magnets Cu2OSeO3 and MnSi has been investigated at high pressures by the ac-calorimetric technique. Despite the differing nature of their magnetic moments, Cu2OSeO3 and MnSi demonstrate a surprising similarity in behavior of their magnetic and thermodynamic properties at the phase transition. Two characteristic features of the heat capacity at the phase transitions of both substances (peak and shoulder) behave also in a similar way at high pressures if analyzed as a function of temperature. This probably implies that the longitudinal spin fluctuations typical of we…
Below a temperature of approximately 29 K the manganese magnetic moments of the cubic binary compound MnSi order to a long-range incommensurate helical magnetic structure. Here, we quantitatively analyze a high-statistic zero-field muon spin rotation spectrum recorded in the magnetically ordered phase of MnSi by exploiting the result of representation theory as applied to the determination of magnetic structures. Instead of a gradual rotation of the magnetic moments when moving along a <111> axis, we find that the angle of rotation between the moments of certain subsequent planes is essentiall…
Magnetization curves of MnSi single crystals have been measured in a range of temperatures $T = 5.5 - 35$ K and magnetic field strengths $H \leq 11$ kOe for $H \parallel$ [111], [001], and [110]. Special attention has been paid to the temperature interval near $T_N = 28.8$K, where MnSi exhibits a transition to the state with a long-period helical magnetic structure. Some new features in the magnetic behavior of MnSi have been found. In particular, in an intermediate temperature region above the transition (28.8 K $= T_N \leq T < 31.5$ K), the $dM(H)/dH$ curves exhibit anomalies that are not ch…
In the light of recent results obtained for the prototype helimagnet MnSi we examine the possible magnetic structures of compounds of the same family, consistent with the crystal symmetries when the magnetic propagation vector is parallel to the [001] axis. The analysis of a published muon spin rotation spectrum recorded in MnGe [Phys. Rev. B 93, 174405 (2016)] shows no deviation from the canonical helimagnetic structure, unlike in MnSi. This qualitative difference calls for further theoretical works on chiral magnets.
In this paper we propose to describe the deformed state of a helimagnet in the magnetic field (A-phase) with a pair of variables: the order parameter which characterizes the magnetic density and the tensor of distortion. Such description corresponds to discontinuities in the magnetic sublattice of the helimagnet accompanied by appearance of dislocations. It is shown that the phase diagram we found for the helimagnet is analogous to the phase diagram of the superconductors of second kind in the magnetic field, where the A-phase is a counterpart of the superconducting mixed state with the Abriko…
Chiral nematic liquid crystals sometimes form blue phases characterized by spirals twisting in different directions. By combining model calculations with neutron-scattering experiments, we show that the magnetic analogue of blue phases does form in the chiral itinerant magnet MnSi in a large part of the phase diagram. The properties of this blue phase explain a number of previously reported puzzling features of MnSi such as partial magnetic order and a two-component specific-heat and thermal-expansion anomaly at the magnetic transition.
The microscopic magnetism in the helical, the conical and the ferro-magnetically polarized phases in an itinerant helical magnet, MnSi, has been studied by an extended 29Si NMR at zero field and under external magnetic fields. The temperature dependence of staggered moment, M_Q(T), determined by the 29Si NMR frequency, nu(T), and nuclear relaxation rate, 1/T_1(T) is in general accord with the SCR theory for weak itinerant ferromagnetic metals and its extension. The external field dependence of resonance frequency, nu(H), follows a vector sum of the contributions from atomic hyperfine and macro…
Thermal expansion and forced magnetostriction of MnSi were measured as a function of temperature down to 5 K and magnetic field to 3 T. The small length (volume) discontinuity at the magnetic phase transition in MnSi decreases with application of magnetic field to a value $ΔL/L \sim 10^{-7}$, and then suddenly the discontinuity seemingly jumps to zero. Thermal expansivity peaks strongly deteriorate with magnetic fields. No specific features identifying a tricritical point were observed. We propose that the Frenkel concept of heterophase fluctuations may be relevant in the current case. Therefo…
MnSi has been extensively studied for five decades, nonetheless detailed information on the Fermi surface (FS) symmetry is still lacking. This missed information prevented from a comprehensive understanding the nature of the magnetic interaction in this material. Here, by performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on high-quality MnSi films epitaxially grown on Si(111), we unveil the FS symmetry and the evolution of the electronic structure across the paramagnetic-helimagnetic transition at T$_C$ $\sim$ 40 K, along with the appearance of sharp quasiparticle emission below T$_C$. The …
We employed small-angle neutron scattering to demonstrate that the magnetic skyrmion lattice can be realized in bulk chiral magnets as a thermodynamically stable state at temperatures much lower than the ordering temperature of the material. This is in the regime where temperature fluctuations become completely irrelevant to the formation of the topologically non-trivial magnetic texture. In this attempt we focused on the model helimagnet MnSi, in which the skyrmion lattice was previously well characterized and shown to exist only in a very narrow phase pocket close to the Curie temperature of…
In this paper we argue that rounded "hills" or "valleys" demonstrated by the heat capacity, thermal expansion coefficient, and elastic module are indications of a smeared second order phase transition, which is flattened and spread out by the application of a magnetic field. As a result, some of the curves which display a temperature dependence of the corresponding quantities cross almost at a single point. Thus, the Vollhardt crossing point should not be identified with any specific energy scale. The smeared phase transition in MnSi preceding the helical first order transition most probably c…
We report a study of the reorientation of the helimagnetic order in the archetypal cubic chiral magnet MnSi as a function of magnetic field direction. The reorientation process as inferred from small-angle neutron scattering, the magnetization, and the ac susceptibility is in excellent agreement with an effective mean-field theory taking into account the precise symmetries of the crystallographic space group. Depending on the field and temperature history and the direction of the field with respect to the crystalline axes, the helix reorientation may exhibit a crossover, a first-order, or a se…
We report muon spin spectroscopy data (muSR) obtained under hydrostatic pressure on a large single crystal of the itinerant helimagnet MnSi, and recorded down to 0.235 K and up to 15.1 kbar. Up to the critical pressure p_c = 14.9 (2) kbar, where the magnetic order is suppressed, the muSR data unambiguously demonstrate that the ground state of the system is magnetic with no indication of any phase separation.
The archetype cubic chiral magnet MnSi is home to some of the most fascinating states in condensed matter such as skyrmions and a non-Fermi liquid behavior in conjunction with a topological Hall effect under hydrostatic pressure. Using small angle neutron scattering, we study the evolution of the helimagnetic, conical and skyrmionic correlations with increasing hydrostatic pressure. We show that the helical propagation vector smoothly reorients from $\langle 111 \rangle$ to $\langle100\rangle$ at intermediate pressures. At higher pressures, above the critical pressure, the long-range helimagne…

We present a detailed AC susceptibility investigation of the fluctuation regime in the insulating cubic helimagnet Cu2OSeO3. For magnetic fields mu_0 H >= 200 mT, and over a wide temperature range, the system behaves according to the scaling relations characteristic of the classical 3D Heisenberg model. For lower magnetic fields the scaling is preserved only at higher T, and becomes renormalized in a narrow T range above the transition temperature. Contrary to the well-studied case of MnSi, where the renormalization has been interpreted within the Brazovskii theory, our analysis of the renorma…
Two centuries of research on phase transitions have repeatedly highlighted the importance of critical fluctuations that abound in the vicinity of a critical point. They are at the origin of scaling laws obeyed by thermodynamic observables close to second-order phase transitions resulting in the concept of universality classes, that is of paramount importance for the study of organizational principles of matter. Strikingly, in case such soft fluctuations are too abundant they may alter the nature of the phase transition profoundly; the system might evade the critical state altogether by undergo…
The mysterious universal line revealing an independence of spin fluctuation contributions to the heat capacity of (Mn,Co)Si on impurity contents and its nature is discovered. This situation probably declares an invariance of the spin subsystem energy that may provide by the response of itinerant electron system on the volume change at doping.
We present a comprehensive investigation of the evolution of helimagnetic correlations in Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si with increasing doping. By combining polarised neutron scattering and high resolution Neutron Spin Echo spectroscopy we investigate three samples with $x$=0.09, 0.11 and 0.14, i.e. with compositions on both sides of the concentration $x^* \sim 0.11$ where the helimagnetic Bragg peaks disappear and between $x^*$ and the quantum critical concentration $x_C \sim 0.17$, where $T_C$ vanishes. We find that the abrupt disappearance of the long range helical periodicity at $x^*$, does not affec…
We have investigated the effect of Ge-substitution to the magnetic ordering in the B20 itinerant chiral magnet MnSi prepared by melting and annealing under ambient pressure. From metallurgical survey, the solubility limit of Ge was found to be $x=0.144(5)$ with annealing temperature $T_\mathrm{an} = 1073$ K. Magnetization measurements on MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ samples show that the helical ordering temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ increases rapidly in the low-$x$ range, whereas it becomes saturated at higher concentration $x>~0.1$. The Ge substitution also increases both the saturation magnetization $…
The vicinity of quantum phase transitions has proven fertile ground in the search for new quantum phases. We propose a physically motivated and unifying description of phase reconstruction near metallic quantum-critical points using the idea of quantum order-by-disorder. Certain deformations of the Fermi surface associated with the onset of competing order enhance the phase space available for low-energy, particle-hole fluctuations and self-consistently lower the free energy. Applying the notion of quantum order-by-disorder to the itinerant helimagnet MnSi, we show that near to the quantum cri…
We report simultaneous measurements of the magnetization and the ac susceptibility across the magnetic phase diagram of single-crystal MnSi. In our study we explore the importance of the excitation frequency, excitation amplitude, sample shape, and crystallographic orientation. The susceptibility, dM/dH, calculated from the magnetization, is dominated by pronounced maxima at the transition from the helical to the conical and the conical to the skyrmion lattice phase. The maxima in dM/dH are not tracked by the ac susceptibility, which in addition varies sensitively with the excitation amplitude…
Chiral magnetic interactions induce complex spin textures including helical and conical spin waves, as well as particle-like objects such as magnetic skyrmions and merons. These spin textures are the basis for innovative device paradigms and give rise to exotic topological phenomena, thus being of interest for both applied and fundamental sciences. Present key questions address the dynamics of the spin system and emergent topological defects. Here we analyze the micromagnetic dynamics in the helimagnetic phase of FeGe. By combining magnetic force microscopy, single-spin magnetometry, and Landa…
Chirality is breaking of mirror symmetry in matter. In the fields of biology and chemistry, this is particularly important because some of the essential molecules in life such as amino acids and DNA have chirality. It is a long-standing mystery how one of the enantiomers was chosen at the beginning stage of life. The understanding of the emergence of homochirality under some conditions is indispensable for the study of the origin of life as well as pharmaceutical science. The chirality is also emergent in magnetic structures. The longitudinal helical magnetic structure is the chiral object com…

The temperature and magnetic field dependence of lattice and carrier excitations in MnSi is studied in detail using inelastic light scattering. The pure symmetry components of the electronic response are derived from the polarization dependent spectra. The $E$ and $T_2$ responses agree by and large with longitudinal and optical transport data. However, an anomaly is observed right above the magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\rm C}=29\,{\rm K}$ that is associated with the fluctuations that drive the transition into the helimagnetic phase first order. The $T_1$ spectra, reflecting mostly chiral …

We report a long-wavelength helimagnetic superstructure in bulk samples of the ferrimagnetic insulator Cu2OSeO3. The magnetic phase diagram associated with the helimagnetic modulation inferred from small angle neutron scattering and magnetisation measurements includes a skyrmion lattice phase and is strongly reminiscent of MnSi, FeGe and Fe1-xCoxSi, i.e., binary isostructural siblings of Cu2OSeO3 that order helimagnetically. The temperature dependence of the specific heat of Cu2OSeO3 is characteristic of nearly critical spin fluctuations at the helimagnetic transition. This provides putative e…
We report high-precision measurements of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat, C(T,H), across the magnetic phase diagram of MnSi. Clear anomalies establish the skyrmion lattice unambiguously as a thermodynamic phase. The evolution of the specific heat anomalies, the field dependence of the entropy released at the phase transitions, and the temperature versus field dependence of crossover lines provide striking evidence of a tricritical point at an internal magnetic field of 340mT and temperature of 28.5K. The existence of this tricritical point represents strong s…
The tensile strain is a promising tool for creation and manipulation of magnetic solitonic textures in the chiral helimagnets via tunable control of magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here, by using the in-situ resonant small-angle x-ray scattering we demonstrate that the skyrmion and chiral soliton lattices can be achieved as metastable states in FeGe lamella as distinct states or even simultaneously by combining the tensile strain and magnetic fields in various orientations with respect to the deformation. The small-angle scattering data are discussed in the frame of …
Spin waves in chiral magnetic materials are strongly influenced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction resulting in intriguing phenomena like non-reciprocal magnon propagation and magnetochiral dichroism. Here, we study the non-reciprocal magnon spectrum of the archetypical chiral magnet MnSi and its evolution as a function of magnetic field covering the field-polarized and conical helix phase. Using inelastic neutron scattering, the magnon energies and their spectral weights are determined quantitatively after deconvolution with the instrumental resolution. In the field-polarized phase the …
Hund's metals are multi-orbital systems with $3d$ or $4d$ electrons exhibiting both itinerant character and local moments, and they feature Kondo-like screenings of local orbital and spin moments, with suppressed coherence temperature driven by Hund's coupling $J_H$. They often exhibit magnetic order at low temperature, but how the interaction between the Kondo-like screening and long-range magnetic order is manifested in the quasiparticle spectrum remains an open question. Here we present spectroscopic signature of such interaction in a Hund's metal candidate MnSi exhibiting weak ferromagneti…
We study the magnetic excitations of itinerant helimagnets by applying time-resolved optical spectroscopy to Fe0.8Co0.2Si. Optically excited oscillations of the magnetization in the helical state are found to disperse to lower frequency as the applied magnetic field is increased; the fingerprint of collective modes unique to helimagnets, known as helimagnons. The use of time-resolved spectroscopy allows us to address the fundamental magnetic relaxation processes by directly measuring the Gilbert damping, revealing the versatility of spin dynamics in chiral magnets. We report an experimental study of the emergence of non-trivial topological winding and long-range order across the paramagnetic to skyrmion lattice transition in the transition metal helimagnet MnSi. Combining measurements of the susceptibility with small angle neutron scattering, neutron resonance spin echo spectroscopy and all-electrical microwave spectroscopy, we find evidence of skyrmion textures in the paramagnetic state exceeding $10^3$Åwith lifetimes above several 10$^{-9}$s. Our experimental findings establish that the paramagnetic to skyrmion lattice transition in MnSi is well-descri…
Direct measurements of the Vollhardt crossing point coordinates were performed making use data of dilatometric and ultrasound experiments on MnSi. As is shown the crossing points are not invariant in the extended range of magnetic field and should be viewed as a side effects of flattening and spreading out the fluctuation maxima or minima by magnetic field~\cite{Sti16}. Correspondingly the crossing point can not be identified with a characteristic feature controlling the phase transition. So further studies are needed to understand intriguing features of the phase diagram of helical itinerant …
Antiferromagnet Mn$_3$P with Neel temperature $T_N=30$ K is composed of Mn-tetrahedrons and zigzag chains formed by three inequivalent Mn sites. Due to the nearly frustrated lattice with many short Mn-Mn bonds, competition of the exchange interactions is expected. We here investigate the magnetic structure and physical properties including pressure effect in single crystals of this material, and reveal a complex yet well-ordered helimagnetic structure. The itinerant character of this materials is strong, and the ordered state with small magnetic moments is easily suppressed under pressure, exh…
A field theory appropriate for magnets that display helical order due to the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya mechanism, a class that includes MnSi and FeGe, is used to derive the phase diagram in a mean-field approximation. The helical phase, the conical phase in an external magnetic field, and recent proposals for the structure of the A-phase and the non-Fermi-liquid region in the paramagnetic phase are discussed. It is shown that the orientation of the helical pitch vector along an external magnetic field within the conical phase occurs via two distinct phase transitions. The Goldstone modes that resul…
It is shown how the exchange interaction, the dipole-dipole interaction, and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction between electronic spin-density fluctuations emerge naturally from a field-theoretic framework that couples electrons to the fluctuating electromagnetic potential. Semi-quantitative estimates are given to determine when the dipole-dipole interaction, which is often neglected, needs to be considered, and various applications are discussed, with an emphasis on weak ferromagnets and on helimagnets.
