The itinerant quasi-ferromagnetic metal MnSi has been studied by detailed thermal expansion measurements under pressures and magnetic fields. A sudden decrease of the volume at the critical pressure Pc ~1.6 GPa has been observed and is in good agreement with the pressure variation of the volume fraction of the spiral magnetic ordering. This confirms that the magnetic order disappears by a first order phase transition. The energy change estimated by the volume discontinuity on crossing Pc is of similar order as the Zeeman energy of the transition from the spiral ground state to a polarized paramagnetic one under magnetic field. In contrast to the strong pressure dependence of the transition temperature, the characteristic fields are weakly pressure dependent, indicating that the strength of the ferromagnetic and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions do not change drastically around Pc. The evaluated results of the thermal expansion coefficient and the magnetostriction are analyzed thermodynamically. The Sommerfeld coefficient of the linear temperature term of the specific heat is enhanced just below Pc. The magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams in the ordered and paramagnetic phases are also compared. Comparison is made with other heavy fermion compounds with first order phase transition at 0 K.
We study an extended Heisenberg model on the MnSi lattice. In the cubic B20 crystal structure of MnSi, Mn atoms form lattices of of corner-shared equilateral triangles. We find an ubiquitous spiral ordering along (110) for J1 <0, and J2=J3 >0, where J1, J2, and J3 are 1st, 2nd and 3rd nearest neighbor Heisenberg interactions, respectively. While the ordering direction of (110) is reasonably robust to the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, it can be shifted to the (111) direction with the introduction of a magnetic anisotropy term for small J2/|J1|. We discuss the possible relev…
Symmetry analysis of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in MnSi-type cubic crystals demonstrates that the magnetic moments are tilted periodically, producing a weak antiferromagnetic pattern, when the helix is unwound by magnetic field. The tilt angles of four Mn sublattices are determined by a component of the DM vector perpendicular to that one responsible for helical spiraling; both components have been evaluated using a simple model. It is shown that the tilting should induce pure magnetic reflections 00l, l=2n+1 in neutron or x-ray magnetic scattering, and the structure factors of…
The vicinity of quantum phase transitions has proven fertile ground in the search for new quantum phases. We propose a physically motivated and unifying description of phase reconstruction near metallic quantum-critical points using the idea of quantum order-by-disorder. Certain deformations of the Fermi surface associated with the onset of competing order enhance the phase space available for low-energy, particle-hole fluctuations and self-consistently lower the free energy. Applying the notion of quantum order-by-disorder to the itinerant helimagnet MnSi, we show that near to the quantum cri…
We study a classical ferromagnetic Heisenberg model in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on the corner-shared triangle lattice formed by the Mn sites of MnSi. We show that a sizable spin helicity can be obtained only when the microscopic Moriya vectors lie parallel to the Mn-Mn bonds. Further, such vectors are shown to produce an unpinned helical order characterized by a particular ordering wavevector magnitude but unpinned direction, dubbed partial order, at physically realizable temperatures. A consequence of such an unpinned helical ordering is that the neutron scattering i…
In this paper we argue that rounded "hills" or "valleys" demonstrated by the heat capacity, thermal expansion coefficient, and elastic module are indications of a smeared second order phase transition, which is flattened and spread out by the application of a magnetic field. As a result, some of the curves which display a temperature dependence of the corresponding quantities cross almost at a single point. Thus, the Vollhardt crossing point should not be identified with any specific energy scale. The smeared phase transition in MnSi preceding the helical first order transition most probably c…
Polycrystalline samples of Lu{1-x}Sc{x}MnSi (x= 0, 0.25, 0.50) are studied using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), heat capacity Cp, magnetization M, magnetic susceptibility chi, and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T and magnetic field H. This system crystallizes in the primitive orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure (space group Pnma) as previously reported. The rho(T) data indicate metallic behavior. The Cp(T), chi(T), and rho(T) measurements consistently indicate long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) transitions with AF ordering temperatures TN = 246, 215 and 188 K for x =…
We have investigated the effect of Ge-substitution to the magnetic ordering in the B20 itinerant chiral magnet MnSi prepared by melting and annealing under ambient pressure. From metallurgical survey, the solubility limit of Ge was found to be $x=0.144(5)$ with annealing temperature $T_\mathrm{an} = 1073$ K. Magnetization measurements on MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ samples show that the helical ordering temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ increases rapidly in the low-$x$ range, whereas it becomes saturated at higher concentration $x>~0.1$. The Ge substitution also increases both the saturation magnetization $…
A phenomenological model accounts for the calculation of incommensurate ordering wave vectors (IC) in several Ce- and U-based f-electron itinerant compounds (CePtSn, CePdSn, CeNiSn, CeRhIn$_5$, URu$_2$Si$_2$, CeNiAsO, CeCu$_{(6-x)}$Au$_x$, UNi$_2$Al$_3$, CeCuSn) as well as in BSSCO, Rb$_2$ZnBr$_4$, MnSi and prototypical IC system Chromium metal. This model is justified by a many-body topological one-dimensional (1-D) Dirac Hamiltonian after center of mass transformation on a chiral set of momenta defined by a local expansion of crystallographic Bragg planes. Implications for the emergence of l…
Fermi liquid theory provides a remarkably powerful framework for the description of the conduction electrons in metals and their ordering phenomena, such as superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and spin- and charge-density-wave order. A different class of ordering phenomena of great interest concerns spin configurations that are topologically protected, that is, their topology can be destroyed only by forcing the average magnetization locally to zero. Examples of such configurations are hedgehogs (points at which all spins are either pointing inwards or outwards) or vortices. A central question …
The Karplus-Luttinger anomalous velocity is shown to lead to electric-field-induced charge accumulation in nearly ferromagnetic noncollinear magnets with itinerant electrons, like $MnSi$. For helical magnetic ordering, the balance between this accumulation and the Coulomb interaction leads to a nonequilibrium charge density wave state with the period of the helix, even when such accumulation is forbidden by an approximate gauge-like symmetry in the absence of electric field. We compute the strength of such charge accumulation as an example of how unexpected many-electron physics is induced by …
The temperature and magnetic field dependence of lattice and carrier excitations in MnSi is studied in detail using inelastic light scattering. The pure symmetry components of the electronic response are derived from the polarization dependent spectra. The $E$ and $T_2$ responses agree by and large with longitudinal and optical transport data. However, an anomaly is observed right above the magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\rm C}=29\,{\rm K}$ that is associated with the fluctuations that drive the transition into the helimagnetic phase first order. The $T_1$ spectra, reflecting mostly chiral …
We employed small-angle neutron scattering to demonstrate that the magnetic skyrmion lattice can be realized in bulk chiral magnets as a thermodynamically stable state at temperatures much lower than the ordering temperature of the material. This is in the regime where temperature fluctuations become completely irrelevant to the formation of the topologically non-trivial magnetic texture. In this attempt we focused on the model helimagnet MnSi, in which the skyrmion lattice was previously well characterized and shown to exist only in a very narrow phase pocket close to the Curie temperature of…
The thermal expansion of the heavy fermion compound CeRh2Si2 has been measured under pressure as a function of temperature using strain gages. A large anomaly associated to the Neel temperature has been detected even above the suspected critical pressure Pc = 1.05 GPa where no indication of antiferromagnetism has been observed in calorimetry experiments sensitive to the entropy change. An unexpected feature is the pressure slowdown of the antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition by comparison to the fast pressure collapse predicted for homogeneous first order quantum phase transition with one…
Magnetic frustration in Fe$_3$PO$_4$O$_3$ has been shown to produce to an unusual magnetic state below T$_N = 163$ K, where incommensurate antiferromagnetic order is restricted to nanosized needle-like domains, as inferred from neutron powder diffraction. Here we show using single-crystal neutron diffraction that Fe$_3$PO$_4$O$_3$ does not exhibit a preferred ordering wavevector direction in the $ab$ plane despite having a well-defined ordering wavevector length. This results in the observation of continuous rings of scattering rather than satellite Bragg peaks. The lack of a preferred incomme…
We report results of tunneling studies on the charge ordering compound Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3} in a magnetic field up to 6T and for temperature down to 25K.We show that a gap (2Δ_{CO} \approx 0.5eV opens up in the density of state (DOS) at the Fermilevel (E_F) on charge ordering (T_{CO}=150K) which collapses in an applied magnetic field when the charge ordered state melts. There is a clear correspondence between the behavior of the resistivity and the gap formation and its collapse in an applied magnetic field. We conclude that a gap in the DOS at E_F is necessary for the stability of the char…
We have investigated the specific heat and resistivity of a single crystal of Pr_{0.63}Ca_{0.37}MnO_3 around the charge ordering (CO) transition temperature, T_{CO}, in the presence of high magnetic fields (<=12T) which can melt the charge ordered state. At low magnetic fields (<=10T), the manganite transforms from a charge-disordered paramagnetic insulating (PI) state to a charge-ordered insulating (COI) state as the temperature is lowered. The COI state becomes unstable beyond a threshold magnetic field and melts to a ferromagnetic metallic phase (FMM). This occurs for T < T_{CO}. However, a…
We report a new tetragonal ground-state for perovskite-structured PbCrO3 from DFT+U calculations, and explain its anomalously large volume. The new structure is stabilized due to orbital ordering of Cr-d in the presence of a large tetragonal crystal field, mainly due to off-centering of the Pb atom. At higher pressures (smaller volumes) there is a first-order transition to a cubic phase where the Cr-d orbitals are orbitally liquid. This phase-transition is accompanied by a ~11.5% volume collapse, one of the largest known for transition-metal oxides. The large ferroelasticity and its strong cou…
We investigate the quantum phase transition of itinerant electrons from a paramagnet to a state which displays long-period helical structures due to a Dzyaloshinskii instability of the ferromagnetic state. In particular, we study how the self-generated effective long-range interaction recently identified in itinerant quantum ferromagnets is cut-off by the helical ordering. We find that for a sufficiently strong Dzyaloshinskii instability the helimagnetic quantum phase transition is of second order with mean-field exponents. In contrast, for a weak Dzyaloshinskii instability the transition is a…
Chirality of matter can produce unique responses in optics, electricity and magnetism. In particular, magnetic crystals transmit their handedness to the magnetism via antisymmetric exchange interaction of relativistic origin, producing helical spin orders as well as their fluctuations. Here we report for a chiral magnet MnSi that chiral spin fluctuations manifest themselves in the electrical magnetochiral effect (eMChE), i.e. the nonreciprocal and nonlinear response characterized by the electrical conductance depending on inner product of electric and magnetic fields $\boldsymbol{E} \cdot \bol…
We report the magnetization, ac susceptibility, and specific heat of optically float-zoned single crystals of Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si, $0.20 \leq x \leq 0.50$. We determine the magnetic phase diagrams for all major crystallographic directions and cooling histories. After zero-field cooling, the phase diagrams resemble that of the archetypal stoichiometric cubic chiral magnet MnSi. Besides the helical and conical state, we observe a pocket of skyrmion lattice phase just below the helimagnetic ordering temperature. At the phase boundaries between these states evidence for slow dynamics is observed.…
We present an ab initio based method which gives clear insight into the interplay between the hybridization, the coulomb exchange, and the crystal-field interactions, as the degree of 4f localization is varied across a series of strongly correlated cerium systems. The results for the ordered magnetic moments, magnetic structure, and ordering temperatures are in excellent agreement with experiment, including the occurence of a moment collapse of non-Kondo origin. In contrast, standard ab initio density functional calculations fail to predict, even qualitatively, the trend of the unusual magenti…
Effects of randomness on interacting fermionic systems in one dimension are investigated by quantum Monte-Carlo techniques. At first, interacting spinless fermions are studied whose ground state shows charge ordering. Quantum phase transition due to randomness is observed associated with the collapse of the charge ordering. We also treat random Hubbard model focusing on the Mott gap. Although the randomness closes the Mott gap and low-lying states are created, which is observed in the charge compressibility, no (quasi-) Fermi surface singularity is formed. It implies localized nature of the lo…
Based on a two-dimensional extended Hubbard model with electron-phonon interaction, we have studied the effect of polaron formation on the charge ordering (CO) transition. It is found that for fully ferromagnetically ordered spins the CO state may go through a process of appearance, collapse and reappearance with decreasing temperature. This is entirely due to a emperature-dependent polaron bandwidth. On the other hand, when a paramagnetic spin state is considered, only a simple reentrant behavior of the CO transition is found, which is only partly due to polaron effect. This model is proposed…
In previous studies the pressure dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\text{o}}$ of Dy was found to exhibit a sharp increase above its volume collapse pressure of 73 GPa, appearing to reach temperatures well above ambient at 157 GPa. In a search for a second such lanthanide, electrical resistivity measurements were carried out on neighboring Tb to 141 GPa over the temperature range 3.8 - 295 K. Below Tb's volume collapse pressure of 53 GPa, the pressure dependence $T_{\text{o}}(P)$ mirrors that of both Dy and Gd. However, at higher pressures $T_{\text{o}}(P)$ for Tb becomes high…
The classical Heisenberg model on the trillium and distorted windmill lattices exhibits a degenerate ground state within large-$N$ theory, where the degenerate wavevectors form a surface and line, in 3-dimensional space, respectively. We name such states partially ordered to represent the existence of long-range order along the direction normal to these degenerate manifolds. We investigate the effects of thermal fluctuations using Monte Carlo (MC) methods, and find a first order transition to a magnetically ordered state for both cases. We further show that the ordering on the distorted windmi…
In an attempt to destabilize the magnetic state of the heavy lanthanides Dy and Gd, extreme pressures were applied in an electrical resistivity measurement to 157 GPa over the temperature range 5 - 295 K. The magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\text{o}}$ and spin-disorder resistance $R_{sd}$ of Dy, as well as the superconducting pair-breaking effect $ΔT_{c}$ in Y(1 at.\% Dy), are found to track each other in a highly non-monotonic fashion as a function of pressure, all three increasing sharply above 73 GPa, the critical pressure for a 6\% volume collapse in Dy. At 157 GPa $T_{\text{o}}$ is esti…
In positive muon spin rotation and relaxation spectroscopy it is becoming nowadays customary to take advantage of Density Functional Theory (DFT) based computational methods to aid the experimental data analysis. DFT aided muon site determination is especially useful for measurements performed in magnetic materials, where large contact hyperfine interactions may arise. Here we present a systematic analysis of the accuracy of the ab initio estimation of muon's hyperfine contact field on elemental transition metals, performing state of the art spin-polarized plane wave DFT and using the projecto…
Impurity effects on the stability of a ferromagnetic metallic state in a bicritical-state manganite, (La0.7Pr0.3)0.65Ca0.35MnO3, on the verge of metal-insulator transition have been investigated by substituting a variety of transition-metal atoms for Mn ones. Among them, Fe doping exhibits the exceptional ability to dramatically decrease the ferromagnetic transition temperature. Systematic studies on the magnetotransport properties and x-ray diffraction for the Fe-doped crystals have revealed that charge-orbital ordering evolves down to low temperatures, which strongly suppresses the ferromagn…
Hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is a three-dimensional analogue of two-dimensional honeycomb iridates, such as $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, which recently appeared as another playground for the physics of Kitaev-type spin liquid. $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ shows a non-collinear spiral ordering of spin-orbital-entangled $J_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 moments at low temperature, which is known to be suppressed under a pressure of $\sim$2 GPa. With further increase of pressure, a structural transition is observed at $P_{\rm S}$ $\sim$ 4 GPa at room temperature. Using the neutron powder diffraction technique, the crys…
We present the electrical resistivity data under application of pressures up to $\sim$ 26 GPa and down to 50 mK temperatures on YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$. We find a pressure induced magnetic phase transition with an onset at $p_c$=18.2$\pm$0.8 GPa. At ambient pressure, YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ manifests a heavy fermion, nonmagnetic ground state and the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures. As pressure is increased, the power law exponent in resistivity, $n$, deviates significantly from Fermi liquid behavior and tends to saturate with $n$ = 1 near $p_c$. A pronounced resistivity maximum, $T_\text{max}$, …
A pressure-induced collapse of magnetic ordering in $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ at $P_m\sim1.5- 2$ GPa has previously been interpreted as evidence for possible emergence of spin liquid states in this hyperhoneycomb iridate, raising prospects for experimental realizations of the Kitaev model. Based on structural data obtained at \emph{room temperature}, this magnetic transition is believed to originate in small lattice perturbations that preserve crystal symmetry, and related changes in bond-directional anisotropic exchange interactions. Here we report on the evolution of the crystal structure of $β$-Li$…
The effects of off-stoichiometry and elemental substitution on electronic properties of iron-based ladder compound BaFe$_{2}$S$_{3}$ are investigated. Resistivity and magnetization are revealed to be quite sensitive to the stoichiometry of Fe atoms, and 10 \% deficiency at Fe sites reduces the antiferromagnetic transition temperature by 40 K. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature decreases even faster and collapse to zero with hole doping through 10 \% K substitution at Ba site, while the antiferromagnetic ordering phase remains with electron doping through 20 \% Co substitution at Fe s…
RuSr2(Nd,Y,Ce)2Cu2O10-d ruthenocuprates have been studied by neutron diffraction, magnetotransport and magnetisation measurements and the electronic phase diagram is reported. Separate Ru and Cu spin ordering transitions are observed, with spontaneous Cu antiferromagnetic order for low hole doping levels p, and a distinct, induced-antiferromagnetic Cu spin phase in the 0.02 < p < 0.06 pseudogap region. This ordering gives rise to large negative magnetoresistances which vary systematically with p in the RuSr2Nd1.8-xY0.2CexCu2O10-d series. A collapse of the magnetoresistance (MR) and magnetisati…
The dynamics of the charge ordered (CO) state under non-equilibrium conditions created by strong dc-electric field (~106 V/cm) and photo-illumination with short (~ 6 ns) laser pulses is investigated in Bi1-xCaxMnO3 (x > 0.5) epitaxial films. A pulsed laser deposition method was used to synthesize films on (100) LaAlO3 (LAO) and (100) SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. The crystallographic structure, temperature dependence of electrical resistivity and magnetization of the samples of different composition prepared under different oxygen partial pressure (pO2) and deposition temperature (TD) are studied. …
Single crystal neutron and high-energy x-ray diffraction have identified the phase lines corresponding to transitions between the ambient-pressure tetragonal (T), the antiferromagnetic orthorhombic (O) and the non-magnetic collapsed tetragonal (cT) phases of CaFe2As2. We find no evidence of additional structures for pressures up to 2.5 GPa (at 300 K). Both the T-cT and O-cT transitions exhibit significant hysteresis effects and we demonstrate that coexistence of the O and cT phases can occur if a non-hydrostatic component of pressure is present. Measurements of the magnetic diffraction peaks s…
Neutron diffraction is used to probe the (H,T) phase diagram of magneto-electric (ME) LiNiPO4 for magnetic fields along the c-axis. At zero field the Ni spins order in two antiferromagnetic phases. One has commensurate (C) structures and general ordering vectors (0,0,0), the other one is incommensurate (IC) with ordering vector (0,q,0). At low temperatures the C order collapses above 12 Tesla and adopts an IC structure with modulation vector parallel to (0,q,0). We show that C order is required for the ME effect and establish how electric polarization results from a field-induced reduction of …
Electric transport measurements of the charge frustrated LuFe2O4, in which the charge ordering (CO) and electronic ferroelectricity are found, reveal strong nonlinear electric conduction upon application of electrical field in both single crystalline and polycrystalline samples. The threshold electric fields (Et) in single crystalline LuFe2O4 are estimated respectively to be about 60V/cm and 10V/cm with E parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis direction. Experimental measurements also demonstrate that the I-V nonlinearity increases quickly with lowering temperature. Furthermore, our in-situ …
Electronic structure and magnetic properties of Fe$_3$Se$_4$ are calculated using the density functional approach. Due to the metallic properties, magnetic moments of the iron atoms in two nonequivalent positions in the unit cell are different from ionic values for Fe$^{3+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$ and are equal to $M_1=2.071 μ_B$ and $M_2=-2.042 μ_B$, making the system ferrimagnetic. The total magnetic moment for the unit cell is $2.135 μ_B$. Under isotropic compression, the total magnetic moment decreases non-monotonically and correlates with the non-monotonic dependence of the density of states at th…
We have investigated the effect of Ti doping on the transport properties coupled with the magnetic ones in Sm$_{0.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$Mn$_{1-η}$Ti$_η$O$_3$ ($0 \leq η\leq 0.04$). The parent compound, Sm$_{0.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$MnO$_3$, exhibits a first-order paramagnetic-insulator to ferromagnetic-metal transition just below $T_{\rm c}$ = 128 K. With substitution of Ti at Mn sites ($B$-site), $T_{\rm c}$ decreases approximately linearly at the rate of 22 K$\%^{-1}$ while the width of thermal hysteresis in magnetization and resistivity increases almost in an exponential fashion. The most spectacular effe…
In this work, we study strongly interacting spinor atoms in a lattice subject to a 2 dimensional (2d) anisotropic Rashba type of spin orbital coupling (SOC) and an Zeeman field. We find the interplay between the Zeeman field and the SOC provides a new platform to host rich and novel classes of quantum commensurate and in-commensurate phases, excitations and phase transitions. These commensurate phases include two collinear states at low and high Zeeman field, two co-planar canted states at Mirror reflected SOC parameters respectively. Most importantly, there are non-coplanar incommensurate Sky…
Inelastic and elastic neutron scattering is used to study spin correlations in the quasi-one dimensional quantum antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3 in strong applied magnetic fields. A condensation of magnons and commensurate transverse long-range ordering is observe at a critical filed $H_c=9.5$ T. The field dependencies of the energies and polarizations of all magnon branches are investigated both below and above the transition point. Their dispersion is measured across the entire 1D Brillouin zone in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The critical wave vector of magnon spectrum truncation [Masuda et al., P…
We present high-energy x-ray diffraction data under applied pressures up to p = 29 GPa, neutron diffraction measurements up to p = 1.1 GPa, and electrical resistance measurements up to p = 5.9 GPa, on SrCo2As2. Our x-ray diffraction data demonstrate that there is a first-order transition between the tetragonal (T) and collapsed-tetragonal (cT) phases, with an onset above approximately 6 GPa at T = 7 K. The pressure for the onset of the cT phase and the range of coexistence between the T and cT phases appears to be nearly temperature independent. The compressibility along the a-axis is the same…
The magnetic and electronic structures of Fe4O5 have been investigated at ambient and high pressures via a combination of representation analysis, density functional theory (DFT+U) calculations, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. A few spin configurations corresponding to the different irreducible representations have been considered. The total-energy calculations reveal that the magnetic ground state of Fe4O5 corresponds to an orthogonal spin order. Depending on the magnetic propagation vector k two spin ordered phases with minimal energy differences are realized. The lowest energy magnetic phase is…
