We report on an 105 ks Suzaku observation of the supernova remnant CTA 1 (G119.5+10.2). The Suzaku soft X-ray observation was carried out with both timing mode and imaging mode. A ~ 10' extended feature, which is interpreted as a bow-shock component of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN), is revealed in this deep observation for the first time. The nebular spectrum can be modelled by a power-law with a photon index of ~ 1.8 which suggests a slow synchrotron cooling scenario. The photon index is approximately constant across this extended feature. We compare and discuss our observations of this complex nebula with previous X-ray investigations. We do not obtain any significant pulsation from the central pulsar in the soft (0.2-12 keV) and hard (10-60 keV) X-ray data. The non-detection is mainly due to the loss of the precise imaging ability to accurately determine the source contribution. The spectra of XIS and HXD can be directly connected without a significant spectral break according to our analysis. Future observations of NuSTAR and Astro-H would be able to resolve the contamination and provide an accurate hard X-ray measurement of CTA 1.
We present a uniform broadband X-ray (0.5-100.0 keV) spectral analysis of 12 Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) selected Compton-thick ($\log N_{\mathrm{H}}/\mathrm{cm}^{-2} \geq 24$) Active Galactic Nuclei (CTAGNs) observed with Suzaku. The Suzaku data of 3 objects are published here for the first time. We fit the Suzaku and Swift spectra with models utilizing an analytic reflection code and those utilizing the Monte Carlo based model from an AGN torus by Ikeda et al. 2009. The main results are as follows. (1) The estimated intrinsic luminosity of a CTAGN strongly depends on the model; applyin…
X-Ray Observation of the Galactic Supernova Remnant G355.6-0.0 with Suzaku
We report on the timing and spectral analysis of two Suzaku observations with different flux levels of the high-mass X-ray binary KS 1947+300 during its 2013 outburst. In agreement with simultaneous NuSTAR observations, the continuum is well described by an absorbed power law with a cut-off and an additional black body component. In addition we find fluorescent emission from neutral, He-like, and even H-like iron. We determine a pulse period of ~18.8 s with the source showing a spin-up between the two observations. Both Suzaku observations show a very similar behavior of the pulse profile, whi…
A southwest region of the Carina nebula was observed with the Suzaku observatory for 47 ks in 2010 December. This region shows distinctively soft X-ray emission in the Chandra campaign observations. Suzaku clearly detects the diffuse emission above known foreground and background components between 0.4-5 keV at the surface brightness of 3.3x10^-14 erg s^{-1} arcmin^{-2}. The spectrum requires two plasma emission components with kT~0.2 and 0.5 keV, which suffer interstellar absorption of N_H~1.9x10^{21} cm^{-2}. Multiple absorption models assuming two temperature plasmas at ionization equilibri…
We report the results of Suzaku observations of the young supernova remnant, Vela Jr.\ (RX J0852.0$-$4622), which is known to emit synchrotron X-rays, as well as TeV gamma-rays. Utilizing 39 Suzaku mapping observation data from Vela Jr., a significant hard X-ray emission is detected with the hard X-ray detector (HXD) from the north-west TeV-emitting region. The X-ray spectrum is well reproduced by a single power-law model with the photon index of 3.15$^{+1.18}_{-1.14}$ in the 12--22 keV band. Compiling this with the soft X-ray spectrum simultaneously observed with the X-ray imaging spectromete…
GRS 1747$-$312 is a neutron star Low-Mass X-ray Binary in the globular cluster Terzan 6, located at a distance of 9.5 kpc from the Earth. During its outbursts, periodic eclipses were known to occur. Observations for the outbursts were performed with Chandra in 2004 and Swift in 2013. XMM-Newton observed its quiescent state in 2004. In addition, when Suzaku observed it in 2009 as a part of Galactic center mapping observations, GRS 1747$-$312 was found to be in a low luminosity state with $L_{\rm x} \sim 1.2 \times 10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$. All of the observations except for XMM-Newton included the…
We present detailed broadband timing and spectral analysis of the persistent, low luminosity and slowly spinning pulsar X Persei using a deep Suzaku observation of the source. The spectrum is unusually hard with a cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF), the presence of which has been debated. By comparing the spectral models relevant for accretion powered pulsars, we have obtained the best constraint on the broadband spectral model of X Persei obtained so far. The CRSF is not confirmed in the average spectrum. We have also identified, the presence of different intensity levels in the so…
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will perform a survey of the whole Galactic disk with unprecedented sensitivity at energies up to 300 TeV. One of the key science projects of the CTA consortium is the discovery of Galactic PeVatrons (cosmic ray accelerators to PeV energies). The determination of efficient criteria to identify PeVatron candidates during the Galactic plane survey observations is essential in order to trigger deeper observations. This contribution presents a method which relies on the broadband spectrum of the source to investigate high energy spectral features. The applicatio…
We present a multi-wavelength study of the FSRQ CTA 102 using Fermi-LAT and simultaneous Swift-XRT/UVOT observations. The Fermi-LAT telescope detected one of the brightest flares from this object during Sep, 2016 to Mar, 2017. In the 190 days of observation period the source underwent four major flares. A detailed analysis of the temporal and spectral properties of these flares indicates the flare at MJD 57751.594 has a $γ$-ray flux of (30.12$\pm$4.48)$\times 10^{-6}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (from 90 minutes binning) in the energy range of 0.1--300 GeV. This has been found to be the highest flux…
We analyze the Suzaku XIS data of the central region of supernova remnant G332.5-5.6. The X-ray data are well described by a single non-equilibrium ionization thermal model, {\tt vnei}, with an absorbing hydrogen column density of 1.4$^{+0.4}_{-0.1}$ $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. The plasma is characterized by an electron temperature of 0.49$^{+0.08}_{-0.06}$ keV with subsolar abundances for O (0.58$^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ solar value) and Fe (0.72$^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ solar value) and slightly overabundance for Mg (1.23$^{+0.14}_{-0.14}$ solar value). It seems that the central X-ray emission originate…
We describe the X-ray emission as observed with Suzaku from five symbiotic stars that we selected for deep Suzaku observations after their initial detection with ROSAT, ASCA and Swift. We find that the X-ray spectra of all five sources can be adequately fit with absorbed, optically thin thermal plasma models, with either single- or multi-temperature plasmas. These models are compatible with the X-ray emission originating in the boundary layer between an accretion disk and a white dwarf. The high plasma temperatures of kT$~>3$ keV for all five targets were greater than expected for colliding wi…
We present results from an emission code that assumes millisecond pulsars (MSPs) to be sources of relativistic particles in globular clusters (GCs) and models the resulting spectral energy distribution (SED) of Galactic GCs due to these particle's interaction with the cluster magnetic and soft-photon fields. We solve a transport equation for leptons and calculate inverse Compton (IC) and synchrotron radiation (SR) to make predictions for the flux expected from Galactic GCs. We perform a parameter study and also constrain model parameters for three GCs using gamma-ray and X-ray data. We next st…
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will have a unique chance of discovery for a large range of masses in Weakly Interacting Massive Particles models of dark matter. The principal target for dark matter searches with CTA is the centre of the Galactic Halo. The best strategy is to perform CTA observations within a few degrees of the Galactic Centre, with the Galactic Centre itself and the most intense diffuse emission regions removed from the analysis. Assuming a cuspy dark matter density profile for the Milky Way, 500 hours of observations in this region provide sensitivities to and below the …
Suzaku Observations of the Great Annihilator and the Surrounding Diffuse Emissions
X-ray reverberation lags from the vicinity of supermassive black holes have been detected in almost 30 AGN. The soft lag, which is the time delay between the hard and soft X-ray light curves, is usually interpreted as the time difference between the direct and reflected emission, but is alternatively suggested to arise from the direct and scattering emission from distant clouds. By analysing the archival Suzaku observations totalling an exposure time of ~ 770 ks, we discover a soft lag of $10\pm3.4$ ks at $9.58\times10^{-6}$ Hz in the luminous quasar PDS 456, which is the longest soft lag and …
We present torus modelling for the X-ray spectra of a nearby narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1239 ($z=0.0199$), based on archival Suzaku, NuSTAR and Swift observations. Our model suggests very soft intrinsic power-law continuum emission of $Γ\approx2.57$ in 2019 and $Γ\approx2.98$ in 2007. By applying a correction factor to the unabsorbed X-ray luminosity, we find that Mrk 1239 is accreting near or around the Eddington limit. Our best-fit spectral model also suggests a torus with a column density of $\log(N_{\rm H, ave}/$cm$^{-2})=25.0\pm0.2$ and a high covering factor of $0.90$ in Mrk 1239, …
