We report on a Suzaku observation of the newly discovered X-ray binary MAXI J1836-194. The source is found to be in the hard/intermediate spectral state and displays a clear and strong relativistically broadened iron emission line. We fit the spectra with a variety of phenomenological, as well as physically motivated disk reflection models, and find that the breadth and strength of the iron line is always characteristic of emission within a few gravitational radii around a black hole. This result is independent of the continuum used and strongly points toward the central object in MAXI J1836-194 being a stellar mass black hole rotating with a spin of $a=0.88\pm0.03$ (90% confidence). We discuss this result in the context of spectral state definitions, physical changes (or lack thereof) in the accretion disk and on the potential importance of the accretion disk corona in state transitions.
With the Suzaku satellite, we observed an unidentified TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1741$-$302 and its surroundings. No diffuse or point-like X-ray sources are detected from the bright southern emission peak of HESS J1741$-$302. From its neighborhood, we found a new intermediate polar candidate at the position of $(α, δ)_{\rm J2000.0} = (\timeform{17h40m35.6s}, \timeform{-30D14m16s})$, which is designated as Suzaku J174035.6$-$301416. The spectrum of Suzaku J174035.6$-$301416 exhibits emission lines at the energy of 6.4, 6.7 and 7.0 keV, which can be assigned as the K$α$ lines from neutral, He-l…
We report on X-ray observations of the radio-intermediate, X-ray bright Seyfert 1 galaxy, III Zw 2, obtained with XMM-Newton, Suzaku, and Swift over the past 17-years. The source brightness varies significantly over yearly time scales, but more modestly over periods of days. Pointed observations with XMM-Newton in 2000 and Suzaku in 2011 show spectral differences despite comparable X-ray fluxes. The Suzaku spectra are consistent with a power law continuum and a narrow Gaussian emission feature at ~6.4 keV, whereas the earlier XMM-Newton spectrum requires a broader Gaussian profile and soft-exc…
We report the discovery of a cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF) in the X-ray spectrum of GX 304-1, obtained by RXTE and Suzaku during major outbursts detected by MAXI in 2010. The peak intensity in August reached 600 mCrab in the 2-20 keV band, which is the highest ever observed from this source. The RXTE observations on more than twenty occasions and one Suzaku observation revealed a spectral absorption feature at around 54 keV, which is the first CRSF detection from this source. The estimated strength of surface magnetic field, $4.7 \times 10^{12}$ G, is one of the highest among b…
We present Suzaku XIS observation of V2491 Cyg (Nova Cyg 2008 No. 2) obtained in quiescence, more than two years after the outburst. The nova was detected as a very luminous source in a wide spectral range from soft to hard X-rays. A very soft blackbody-like component peaking at 0.5 keV indicates that either we observe remaining, localized hydrogen burning on the surface of the white dwarf, or accretion onto a magnetized polar cap. In the second case, V2491 Cyg is a candidate "soft intermediate polar". We obtained the best fit for the X-ray spectra with several components: two of thermal plasm…
Unified X-ray spectral and timing studies of Cygnus X-1 in the low/hard and hard intermediate state were conducted in a model-independent manner, using broadband Suzaku data acquired on 25 occasions from 2005 to 2009 with a total exposure of ~ 450 ks. The unabsorbed 0.1--500 keV source luminosity changed over 0.8--2.8% of the Eddington limit for 14.8 solar masses. Variations on short (1--2 seconds) and long (days to months) time scales require at least three separate components: a constant component localized below ~2 keV, a broad soft one dominating in the 2--10 keV range, and a hard one most…
4U 1210-64 has been postulated to be a High-Mass X-ray Binary powered by the Be mechanism. X-ray observations with Suzaku, the ISS Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array (PCA) and All Sky Monitor (ASM) provide detailed temporal and spectral information on this poorly understood source. Long term ASM and MAXI observations show distinct high and low states and the presence of a 6.7101 +/- 0.0005 day modulation, interpreted as the orbital period. Folded light curves reveal a sharp dip, interpreted as an eclipse. To determine the nature…
We report on the X-ray spectral analysis of the black hole candidate XTE\ J1752--223 in the 2009--2010 outburst, utilizing data obtained with the MAXI/Gas Slit Camera (GSC), the Swift/XRT, and Suzaku, which work complementarily. As already reported by Nakahira et al. (2010) MAXI monitored the source continuously throughout the entire outburst for about eight months. All the MAXI/GSC energy spectra in the high/soft state lasting for 2 months are well represented by a multi-color disk plus power-law model. The innermost disk temperature changed from $\sim$0.7 keV to $\sim$0.4 keV and the disk fl…
Context. White dwarfs (WDs) in cataclysmic variables (CVs) are important experimental laboratories where the electron degeneracy is taking place on a macroscopic scale. Magnetic CVs increase in number especially in the hard X-ray band (>10 keV) thanks to sensitive hard X-ray missions. Aims. From X-ray spectroscopy, we estimate the masses of nearby WDs in moderately-magnetized CVs, or Intermediate Polars (IPs). Methods. Using the Suzaku satellite, we aquired wide-band spectra of 17 IPs, covering 3-50 keV. An accretion column model of Suleimanov et al. (2005) and an optically-thin thermal emissi…
We methodically model the broad-band Suzaku spectra of a small sample of six 'bare' Seyfert galaxies: Ark 120, Fairall 9, MCG-02-14-009, Mrk 335, NGC 7469 and SWIFT J2127.4+5654. The analysis of bare Seyferts allows a consistent and physical modelling of AGN due to a weak amount of any intrinsic warm absorption, removing the degeneracy between the spectral curvature due to warm absorption and the red-wing of the Fe K region. Through effective modelling of the broad-band spectrum and investigating the presence of narrow neutral or ionized emission lines and reflection from distant material, we …
We report on the geometry of accretion disk and high energy coronae in the strong Comptonization state (the very high/steep power law/hard intermediate state) based on a Suzaku observation of the famous Galactic black hole GX 339-4. These data were taken just before the peak of the 2006-2007 outburst, and the average X-ray luminosity in the 0.7-200 keV band is estimated to be 2.9E38 erg/s for a distance of 8 kpc. We fit the spectrum with both simple (independent disk and corona) and sophisticated (energetically coupled disk and corona) models, but all fits imply that the underlying optically t…
Diffusive shock acceleration by the shockwaves in supernova remnants (SNRs) is widely accepted as the dominant source for Galactic cosmic rays. However, it is unknown what determines the maximum energy of accelerated particles. The surrounding environment could be one of the key parameters. The SNR RCW 86 shows both thermal and non-thermal X-ray emission with different spatial morphologies. These emission originate from the shock-heated plasma and accelerated electrons respectively, and their intensities reflect their density distributions. Thus, the remnant provides a suitable laboratory to t…
A detailed search for emission and absorption lines and assessing their upper limits are performed for Suzaku data. The method utilizes a matched-filtering approach to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio for a given energy resolution, which could be applicable to many types of line search. We first applied it to well-known AGN spectra that have been reported to have ultra-fast outflows, and find that our results are consistent with previous findings at the ~3σ level. We proceeded to search for emission and absorption features in the two bright magnetars 4U 0142+61 and 1RXS J1708-4009, applying …
This work presents the broad-band time-averaged spectral analysis of neutron star low-mass X-ray binary, XTE J1710-281 by using the Suzaku archival data. The source was in a hard or an intermediate spectral state during this observation. This is the first time that a detailed spectral analysis of the persistent emission spectra of XTE J1710-281 has been done up to 30 keV with improved constraints on its spectral parameters. By simultaneously fitting the XIS (0.6-9.0 keV) and the HXD-PIN (15.0-30.0 keV) data, we have modelled the persistent spectrum of the source with models comprising a soft c…
We report on results of imaging and spectral studies of X-ray emission from Jupiter observed by Suzaku. In 2006 Suzaku had found diffuse X-ray emission in $1\unicode{x2013}5$ keV associated with Jovian inner radiation belts. It has been suggested that the emission is caused by the inverse-Compton scattering by ultra-relativistic electrons ($ \sim 50 $ MeV) in Jupiter's magnetosphere. To confirm the existence of this emission and to understand its relation to the solar activity, we conducted an additional Suzaku observation in 2014 around the maximum of the 24th solar cycle. As a result, we suc…
MAXI J1421-613 is an X-ray burster discovered by Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) on 9 January 2014 and is considered to be a low-mass X-ray binary. A previous study analyzing follow-up observation data obtained by Suzaku on 31 January to 3 February 2014 reported that an annular emission of ~3'-9' radius was found around the transient source. The most plausible origin of the annular emission is a dust scattering echo by the outburst of MAXI J1421-613. In this paper, we confirm the annular emission by analyzing the data of the Swift follow-up observation which was conducted by the photon c…
Mars was observed in X-rays during April 3-5 2008 for 82 ksec with the Japanese Suzaku observatory. Mars has been known to emit X-rays via the scattering of solar X-rays and via the charge exchange between neutral atoms in the exosphere and solar wind ions. Past theoretical studies suggest that the exospheric neutral density may vary by a factor of up to 10 over the solar cycle. To investigate a potential change of the exospheric charge exchange emission, Mars was observed with Suzaku at solar minimum. Significant signals were not detected at the position of Mars in the energy band of 0.2-5 ke…
We report on Suzaku observations of large-scale X-ray structures possibly related with the Fermi Bubbles obtained in 2013 with a total duration of ~ 80 ks. The observed regions were the: (i) northern cap (N-cap; l ~ 0 deg, 45 deg < b < 55 deg) seen in the Mid-band (1.7-4.0 keV) map recently provided by MAXI-SSC and (ii) southeast claw (SE-claw; l ~ 10 deg, -20 deg < b < -10 deg) seen in the ROSAT all-sky map and MAXI-SSC Low-band (0.7-1.7 keV) map. In each region, we detected diffuse X-ray emissions which are represented by a three component plasma model consisting of an unabsorbed thermal com…
We present three Suzaku observations of the black hole candidate 4U 1957+11 (V1408 Aql) --- a source that exhibits some of the simplest and cleanest examples of soft, disk-dominated spectra. 4U 1957+11 also presents among the highest peak temperatures found from disk-dominated spectra. Such temperatures may be associated with rapid black hole spin. The 4U 1957+11 spectra also require a very low normalization, which can be explained by a combination of small inner disk radius and a large distance (>10 kpc) which places 4U 1957+11 well into the Galactic halo. We perform joint fits to the Suzaku …
X-ray reverberation lags from the vicinity of supermassive black holes have been detected in almost 30 AGN. The soft lag, which is the time delay between the hard and soft X-ray light curves, is usually interpreted as the time difference between the direct and reflected emission, but is alternatively suggested to arise from the direct and scattering emission from distant clouds. By analysing the archival Suzaku observations totalling an exposure time of ~ 770 ks, we discover a soft lag of $10\pm3.4$ ks at $9.58\times10^{-6}$ Hz in the luminous quasar PDS 456, which is the longest soft lag and …
NGC 1275 is a gamma-ray-emitting radio galaxy at the center of the Perseus cluster. Its multi-wavelength spectrum is similar to that of blazers, and thus a jet-origin of gamma-ray emissions is believed. In the optical and X-ray region, NGC 1275 also shows a bright core, but their origin has not been understood, since a disk emission is not ruled out. In fact, NGC 1275 exhibits optical broad emission lines and a X-ray Fe-K line, which are typical for Seyfert galaxies. In our precious studies of NGC 1275 with Suzaku/XIS, no X-ray time variability was found from 2006 to 2011, regardless of modera…
The intermediate polar GK Per exhibited a dwarf nova outburst in March-April 2015. Suzaku X-ray telescope serendipitously captured the onset of the outburst during its pre-scheduled pointing observation spanning four days. In this paper, we present temporal and spectral analysis results of this outburst, together with those from archival data of quiescent obtained in 2009 and 2014. Our temporal analysis confirmed previously reported spin modulation of X-ray count rates in outburst with a WD spin period of P_WD=351.4+/-0.5 s. The modulation is also detected in the hard X-ray band (16-60 keV), a…
We report the results of a Suzaku X-ray imaging study of NGC6251, a nearby giant radio galaxy with intermediate FR I/II radio properties. Our pointing direction was centered on the gamma -ray emission peak recently discovered with Fermi-LAT around the position of the north-west radio lobe 15 arcmin offset from the nucleus. After subtracting two "off-source" pointings adjacent to the radio lobe, and removing possible contaminants in the XIS field of view, we found significant residual X-ray emission most likely diffuse in nature. The spectrum of the excess X-ray emission is well fit by a power …
Previous X-ray spectral analysis has revealed an increasing number of AGNs with high accretion rates where an outflow with a mildly relativistic velocity originates from the inner accretion disk. Here we report the detection of a new ultra-fast outflow (UFO) with a velocity of $v_{\rm out}=0.319^{+0.005}_{-0.008}c$ in addition to a relativistic disk reflection component in a poorly studied NLS1 WKK~4438, based on archival \nustar and \suzaku observations. The spectra of both \suzaku and \nustar observations show an Fe~\textsc{xxvi} absorption feature and the \suzaku data also show evidence for…
The microquasar GX 339-4 was observed by Suzaku five times, spaced by a few days, during its transition back to the hard state at the end of its 2010-2011 outburst. The 2-10 keV source flux decreases by a factor ~10 between the beginning and the end of the monitoring. Simultaneous radio and OIR observations highlighted the re-ignition of the radio emission just before the beginning of the campaign, the maximum radio emission being reached between the two first Suzaku pointings, while the IR peaked a few weeks latter. A fluorescent iron line is always significantly detected. Fits with a gaussia…

We report on the deepest X-ray observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 335 in the low-flux state obtained with Suzaku. The data are compared to a 2006 high-flux Suzaku observation when the source was ~10-times brighter. Describing the two flux levels self-consistently with partial covering models would require extreme circumstances, as the source would be subject to negligible absorption during the bright state and ninety-five per cent covering with near Compton-thick material when dim. Blurred reflection from an accretion disc around a nearly maximum spinning black hole (a>0.91, w…
The X-ray spectrum of the nearest ultraluminous X-ray source, M33 X-8, obtained by Suzaku during 2010 January 11 -- 13, was closely analyzed to examine its nature. It is, by far, the only data with the highest signal statistic in 0.4 -- 10 keV range. Despite being able to reproduce the X-ray spectrum, Comptonization of the disk photons failed to give a physically meaningful solution. A modified version of the multi-color disk model, in which the dependence of the disk temperature on the radius is described as r^(-p) with p being a free parameter, can also approximate the spectrum. From this mo…
We present X-ray timing and spectral analyses of simultaneous 150 ks Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Suzaku X-ray observations of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 4151. We disentangle the continuum emission, absorption, and reflection properties of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) by applying inner accretion disk reflection and absorption-dominated models. With a time-averaged spectral analysis, we find strong evidence for relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk. We find that relativistic emission arises from a highly ionized inner accretion disk with a steep emissi…
We report the results from X-ray studies of the newly discovered black hole candidate MAXI J1305-704 based on Suzaku and Swift observations in the low/hard and high/soft states, respectively. The long Suzaku observation shows two types of clear absorption dips, both of which recur on a dip interval of 9.74 +- 0.04 hours, which we identify with the orbital period. There is also partially ionized absorption in the non-dip (persistent) emission in both the high/soft state and, very unusually, the low/hard state. However, this absorption (in both states) has substantially lower ionization than tha…
We present an analysis of the 101 ks, 2007 Suzaku spectrum of the LINER galaxy NGC 1052. The 0.5-10 keV continuum is well-modeled by a power-law modified by Galactic and intrinsic absorption, and it exhibits a soft, thermal emission component below 1 keV. Both a narrow core and a broader component of Fe K emission centered at 6.4 keV are robustly detected. While the narrow line is consistent with an origin in material distant from the black hole, the broad line is best fit empirically by a model that describes fluorescent emission from the inner accretion disk around a rapidly rotating black h…
We present a broad-band analysis of deep Suzaku observations of nearby Seyfert 1 AGN: Fairall 9, MCG--6-30-15, NGC 3516, NGC 3783 and NGC 4051. The use of deep observations (exposures >200 ks) with high S/N allows the complex spectra of these objects to be examined in full, taking into account features such as the soft excess, reflection continuum and complex absorption components. After a self-consistent modelling of the broad-band data (0.6-100.0 keV, also making use of BAT data from Swift), the subtle curvature which may be introduced as a consequence of warm absorbers has a measured affect…
We construct full broadband models in an analysis of Suzaku observations of nearby Seyfert 1 AGN (z<0.2) with exposures >50ks and with greater than 30000 counts in order to study their iron line profiles. This results in a sample of 46 objects and 84 observations. After a full modelling of the broadband Suzaku and Swift-BAT data (0.6-100 keV) we find complex warm absorption is present in 59% of the objects in this sample which has a significant bearing upon the derived Fe K region parameters. Meanwhile 35% of the 46 objects require some degree of high column density partial coverer in order to…
We report on the findings of a 364 ksec observation of the BL LAC object Mrk 421 with the X-ray observatory Suzaku. The analysis in this paper uses fluxes and hardness ratios in the broad energy range from 0.5 keV to 30 keV. During the course of the observation, the 0.5 keV - 30 keV flux decreased by a factor of $\sim$2 and was accompanied by several large flares occurring on timescales of a few hours. We find that fitting a broken power model to spectra from isolated epochs during the observation describes the data well. Different flares exhibit different spectral and hardness ratio evolution…
Studies were made of the 1-70 keV persistent spectra of fifteen magnetars as a complete sample observed with Suzaku from 2006 to 2013. Combined with early NuSTAR observations of four hard X-ray emitters, nine objects showed a hard power-law emission dominating at $\gtrsim$10 keV with the 15--60 keV flux of $\sim$1-$11\times 10^{-11}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. The hard X-ray luminosity $L_{\rm h}$, relative to that of a soft-thermal surface radiation $L_{\rm s}$, tends to become higher toward younger and strongly magnetized objects. Updated from the previous study, their hardness ratio, defined …
We analyzed the Suzaku data of M86 and its adjacent regions to study the extended emission around it. The M86 core, the plume, and the tail extending toward the northwest were clearly detected, as well as the extended halo around them. From the position angle $\sim45°$ to $\sim275°$, the surface brightness distribution of the core and the extended halo was represented relatively well with a single $β$-model of $β\sim0.5$ up to 15'-20'. The X-ray spectra of the core was represented with a two-temperature model of $kT\sim 0.9$ keV and $\sim0.6$ keV. The temperatures of the core and the halo have…
Long-exposure Suzaku X-ray observations of the active galaxy NGC 4051 from 2005 and 2008 are analysed, in an attempt to reach a self-consistent understanding of the spectral variability on long timescales and at high time resolution. Principal components analysis and a maximum likelihood method of power spectrum analysis are used. In common with other type I AGN, the spectral variability is dominated by a varying-normalisation power-law component together with a quasi-steady, hard-spectrum offset component that contains Fe K atomic features. NGC 4051 displays a strong excess over a power-law a…
Suzaku observations of the blazar OJ 287 were performed in 2007 April 10--13 and November 7--9. They correspond to a quiescent and a flaring state, respectively. The X-ray spectra can be well described with single power-law models in both exposures. The derived X-ray photon index and the flux density at 1 keV were found to be Gamma = 1.65 +- 0.02 and S_{1 keV} = 215 +- 5 nJy, in the quiescent state. In the flaring state, the source exhibited a harder X-ray spectrum (Gamma = 1.50 +- 0.01) with a nearly doubled X-ray flux density S_{1 keV} = 404^{+6}_{-5} nJy. Moreover, significant hard X-ray si…
We review the X-ray spectral properties of magnetic cataclysmic binaries derived from observations obtained during the last decade with the large X-ray observatories XMM-Newton, Chandra and Suzaku. We focus on the signatures of the different accretion modes which are predicted according to the values of the main physical parameters (magnetic field, local accretion rate and white dwarf mass). The observed large diversity of spectral behaviors indicates a wide range of parameter values in both intermediate polars and polars, in line with a possible evolutionary link between both classes.
We present an analysis of the spectral properties observed in X-rays from active galactic nucleus BL Lacertae using RXTE, Suzaku, ASCA, BeppoSAX, and Swift observations. The total time covered by these observations is approximately 20 years. We show that this source undergoes X-ray spectral transitions from the low hard state (LHS) through the intermediate state (IS) to the high soft state (HSS) during these observations. During the RXTE observations (1997 -- 2001, {180 ks, for a total 145 datasets}), the source was approximately 75%, 20% and only 5 of the time in the IS, LHS, and HSS, respect…
The wide-band Suzaku spectra of the black hole binary GX 339-4, acquired in 2007 February during the Very High state, were reanalyzed. Effects of event pileup (significant within ~ 3' of the image center) and telemetry saturation of the XIS data were carefully considered. The source was detected up to ~ 300$ keV, with an unabsorbed 0.5--200 keV luminosity of ~3.8 10^{38} erg/s at 8 kpc. The spectrum can be approximated by a power-law of photon index 2.7, with a mild soft excess and a hard X-ray hump. When using the XIS data outside 2' of the image center, the Fe-K line appeared extremely broad…
The Galactic Black hole candidate XTE J1752-223 was observed during the decay of its 2009 outburst with the Suzaku and XMM-Newton observatories. The observed spectra are consistent with the source being in the ''intermediate`` and ''low-hard state`` respectively. The presence of a strong, relativistic iron emission line is clearly detected in both observations and the line profiles are found to be remarkably consistent and robust to a variety of continuum models. This strongly points to the compact object in \j\ being a stellar-mass black hole accretor and not a neutron star. Physically-motiva…
A significant number of cataclysmic variables were detected as hard X-ray sources in the INTEGRAL survey, most of them of the magnetic intermediate polar type. We present a detailed X-ray broad-band study of two new sources, IGR J00234+6141 and 1RXS J213344.1+510725, that allow us to classify them as secure members of the intermediate polar class. Timing and spectral analysis of IGR J00234+6141 are based on a XMM-Newton observation and INTEGRAL publicly available data. For 1RXS J213344.1+510725 we use XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations at different epochs, as well as INTEGRAL publicly availabl…
We present broad-band pulsation and spectral characteristics of the accreting X-ray pulsar OAO 1657--415 with a 2.2 d long \emph{Suzaku} observation carried out covering its orbital phase range $\sim$ 0.12--0.34, with respect to the mid-eclipse. During the last third of the observation, the X-ray count rate in both the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) and the HXD-PIN instruments increased by a factor of more than 10. During this observation, the hardness ratio also changed by a factor of more than 5, uncorrelated with the intensity variations. In two segments of the observation, lasting for $\…
We present measurements of the soft X-ray background emission for 130 Suzaku observations at $75^\circ<l < 285^\circ$ and $|b|>15^\circ$ obtained from 2005 to 2015, covering nearly one solar cycle. In addition to the standard soft X-ray background model consisting of the local hot bubble and the Milky Way Halo (MWH), we include a hot collisional-ionization-equilibrium component with a temperature of $\sim 0.8$ keV to reproduce spectra of a significant fraction of the lines of sight. Then, the scatter in the relation between the emission measure vs. temperature of the MWH component is reduced. …
We report the discovery of an annular emission of $\sim$3'-9' radius around the center of a transient source, an X-ray burster MAXI J1421-613, in the Suzaku follow-up analysis. The spectrum of the annular emission shows no significant emission-line structure, and is well explained by an absorbed power law model with a photon index of $\sim$4.2. These features exclude the possibility that the annular emission is a shell-like component of a supernova remnant. The spectral shape, the time history, and the X-ray flux of the annular emission agree with the scenario that the emission is due to a dus…
We systematically reanalyze two previous observations of the black hole (BH) GX 339-4 in the very high and intermediate state taken with $\emph{XMM-Newton}$ and $\emph{Suzaku}$. We utilize up-to-date data reduction procedures and implement the recently developed, self-consistent model for X-ray reflection and relativistic ray tracing, {\sc relxill}. In the very high and intermediate state, the rate of accretion is high and thus the disk remains close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). We require a common spin parameter and inclination when fitting the two observations since these p…
We present a detailed spectral analysis of the black hole candidate MAXI J1836-194. The source was caught in the intermediate state during its 2011 outburst by Suzaku and RXTE. We jointly fit the X-ray data from these two missions using the relxill model to study the reflection component, and a steep inner emissivity profile indicating a compact corona as the primary source is required in order to achieve a good fit. In addition, a reflection model with a lamp-post configuration (relxilllp), which is normally invoked to explain the steep emissivity profile, gives a worse fit and is excluded at…
The X-ray transient MAXI J1631-479 went into outburst on 2018 December 21 and remained active for about seven months. Owing to various constraints it was monitored by NICER only during the decay phase of the outburst for about four months. The NICER observations were primarily in the soft state with a brief excursion to the hard intermediate state. While the soft state spectrum was dominated by thermal disk emission, the hard intermediate state spectrum had maximum contribution from the thermal Comptonization. Almost all intermediate-state power spectra had a Type-C low frequency quasi-periodi…
Detecting and modelling the reprocessed hard X-ray emission component in the accretion flow, so-called reflection spectrum is a main tool to estimate black hole spins in a wide range of astrophysical black holes regardless of their mass or distance. In this work, we studied the X-ray spectra of the Seyfert I galaxy III Zw 2 using multi-epoch XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and Suzaku observations. The X-ray spectra exhibit a soft-excess below 1 keV and a prominent excess at the location of the broad Fe Kα line at 6.4 keV. To account for these spectral features, we have fitted the spectra with multiple mode…
[Abridged] Context: We present a systematic X-ray spectral-timing study of the recently discovered, exceptionally bright black hole X-ray binary system MAXI J1820+070. Our analysis focuses on the first part of the 2018 outburst, covering the rise throughout the hard state, the bright hard and hard-intermediate states, and the transition to the soft-intermediate state. Aims: We address the issue of constraining the geometry of the innermost accretion flow and its evolution throughout an outburst. Methods: We employed two independent X-ray spectral-timing methods applied to the NICER data of MAX…
We have observed the hard X-ray selected Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy SWIFT J2127.4+5654 with Suzaku. We report the detection of a broad relativistic iron emission line from the inner accretion disc. By assuming that the inner edge of the accretion disc corresponds to the innermost stable circular orbit of the black hole spacetime, the line profile enables us to measure a black hole spin a= 0.6\pm0.2. However, a non-rotating Schwarzschild spacetime is excluded at just above the 3 sigma level, while a maximally spinning Kerr black hole is excluded at the ~5 sigma level. The intermediate spin we…
We report results from X-ray and optical observations of the Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1828-249, performed with Suzaku and the Kanata telescope around the X-ray flux peak in the 2013 outburst. The time-averaged X-ray spectrum covering 0.6--168 keV was approximately characterized by a strong multi-color disk blackbody component with an inner disk temperature of ~0.6 keV, and a power-law tail with a photon index of ~2.0. We detected an additional structure at 5-10 keV, which can be modelled neither with X-ray reflection on the disk, nor relativistic broadening of the disk emission. Ins…
We report the first robust detection of the hard X-ray emission in the 15--30\,keV band from Kepler's supernova remnant with the silicon PIN-type semiconductor detector of the hard X-ray detector (HXD-PIN) onboard Suzaku. The detection significance is 7.17 $σ$ for the emission from Kepler's entire X-ray emitting region. The energy spectrum is found to be well reproduced by a single power-law function with a photon index of $3.13^{+1.85+0.69}_{-1.52-0.36}$, where the first and second errors represent 90\%-statistical and systematic errors, respectively. The X-ray flux is determined to be 2.75$_…
We performed timing and spectral analysis of multi-epoch Suzaku, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) Circinus ULX5, to put constraints on the mass of the central object and the accretion mode operating in this source. We aim to answer whether the source contains a stellar mass black hole with a super-Eddington accretion flow or an intermediate mass black hole accreting matter in a sub-Eddington mode. Moreover, we search for major observed changes in spectra and timing occur, and determine if they are associated with major structural changes in the disk, s…
We report results on the joint-fit of the NuSTAR and HXMT data for the black hole X-ray binary candidate MAXI J1535-571. The observations were obtained in 2017 when the source evolved through the hard, hard-intermediate and soft-intermediate states over the rising phase of the outburst. After subtracting continuum components, X-ray reflection signatures are clearly showed in those observations. By modeling the relativistic reflection in detail, we find that the inner radius $R_{\rm{in}}$ is relatively stable with $R_{\rm{in}}\lesssim 1.55 R_{\rm{g}}$ during the three states, which implies that…
We present the discovery of a low-frequency $\approx 5.7$ Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) feature in observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571 in its soft-intermediate state, obtained in September-October 2017 by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). The feature is relatively broad (compared to other low-frequency QPOs; quality factor $Q\approx 2$) and weak (1.9% rms in 3-10 keV), and is accompanied by a weak harmonic and low-amplitude broadband noise. These characteristics identify it as a weak Type A/B QPO, similar to ones previously identified in the s…
We report the energy-resolved broadband timing analysis of the black hole X-ray transient MAXI J1631-479 during its 2019 outburst from February 11 to April 9, using data from the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), which caught the source from its hard intermediate state to the soft state. Thanks to the large effective area of Insight-HXMT at high energies, we are able to present the energy dependence of fast variability up to ~100 keV. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with frequency varying between 4.9 Hz and 6.5 Hz are observed in the 1-100 keV energy band. While…
