CTA 1 (G119.5+10.2) is a composite supernova remnant (SNR) with a shell-type structure in the radio band and a center filled morphology at X-ray energies. Fermi has detected a radio-quiet pulsar PSR J0007+7303 within the radio shell of CTA 1 in a blind search within its first months of operation. Located within an X-ray synchrotron pulsar wind nebula (PWN), the Fermi source is spatially coincident with the EGRET source 3EG J0010+7309. We present the the detection of the system in very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays by VERITAS, with a preliminary comparison to other TeV-detected PWNe.
The VERITAS array of 12-m atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes is used in an intensive observation program focused on the discovery of VHE (E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray-emitting blazars. Since VERITAS began full-scale operation in 2007, more than 1000 hours of observation, on ~90 targets, have been devoted to the VHE blazar discovery effort and to timely follow-up in multi-wavelength (MWL) observation campaigns. These data have resulted in the discovery of VHE emission from 10 blazars (6 HBLs and 4 IBLs). A summary of these VHE discoveries is presented.
VERITAS is a major ground-based detector of very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma rays and cosmic rays. VERITAS consists of an ar- ray of four 12m-diameter atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes that has been fully operational since September 2007. 1ES 1218+304 is a moderate-redshift (z = 0.182) high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object (HBL). Detected by both the MAGIC and VERITAS gamma-ray observatories, 1ES 1218+304 is frequently monitored by VERITAS as part of its long-term blazar monitoring program. On the 3rd of January 2019, during a regularly scheduled blazar snapshot, VERITAS observed 1ES 1218+304 to have an elevated VHE flux state which continued through January 5 (ATEL #12360). HESS J0632+057 is an unidentified gamma-ray source located in the Monoceros region, probably associated with the massive Be star MWC 148. H.E.S.S. and VERITAS observations in the very high energy (VHE) range combined with Swift X-ray data indicate that this object is a new member of the elusive gamma-ray binary class. We present long-term observations of several VHE (E > 100 GeV) blazars with VERITAS, together with contemporaneous Swift and RXTE X-ray data. The observed targets include Mrk 421, Mrk 501, 1ES 2344+514. Strong flux and spectral variability is seen in Mrk 421 on nightly time-scales between January and June 2008, revealing a highly correlated X-ray to GeV/TeV connection. Modest X-ray variability is evident in Mrk 501. Observations of 1ES 2344+514 in December 2007 show VHE gamma-ray and X-ray flux doubling on nightly time-scales.
A few Galactic objects are known to be variable sources of photons with energies above 100 GeV. These systems are mostly binaries, where variability can often be connected to the orbital period. Particle acceleration and gamma-ray production processes in binaries are generally not well understood. We present here an overview of VERITAS observations of binary systems at very-high energies (VHE) with emphasis on LS I +61 303 and 1A0535+262. The results are discussed in the context of recent observations of RXTE, Swift and Fermi LAT at X- and Gamma-ray energies.
We report on the VERITAS detection of very-high-energy (VHE, $E > 100~\mathrm{GeV}$) $γ$-ray emission from the optically bright quasar OJ 287 which is located at a redshift of z = 0.306. OJ 287 has been observed to display regular optical outbursts with a period of approximately 12 years, with the last major optical outburst having occurred in 2015. To explain this periodicity, models involving a binary supermassive black hole system at the core of OJ 287, or a helical jet, have been developed. Gamma-ray binaries are variable sources of GeV-to-TeV photons with the peak in their spectral energy distributions above 100 MeV. There are only five Galactic gamma-ray binaries known and the processes which govern particle acceleration, non-thermal emission and the variability patterns are not well understood. We present here for the first time results of the VERITAS binary discovery program at VHE energies and a summary of eleven years of observations of the gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057. We present results from a deep VERITAS exposure of the distant (z=0.89) flat-spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) 4C +55.17. The high flux, hard index and steady emission found by Fermi LAT observations make this blazar a promising very-high-energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) candidate, offering a possibility to clarify the location of FSRQ VHE emission. The Cygnus region is a nearby very active star forming region, containing several OB associations, considered as tracers of young pulsars. Above 12 TeV, the Milagro Collaboration has reported the discovery of a very large source, MGRO J2019+37, lying towards the Cyg OB1 association, at the edge of the Cygnus region. We present new high angular resolution and high sensitivity radio observations toward the neutron star RX J0007.0+7303, carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at 1.5 GHz. This source powers a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) only detected in the X-ray and gamma-ray domains. The new high quality radio observations do not show any evidence of a source, either point-like or extended, that could be interpreted as the radio counterpart of the high energy PWN, down to a noise level of 15 mJy/beam.

The VERITAS array of Cherenkov telescopes was used to observe ~130 blazars from 2007 to 2012. Of these, 25 were detected as very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) sources. We present here the results of the analysis of 65 VERITAS non-detected blazars, including upper limits on their VHE flux. Results from a stacked analysis of the entire data set and of smaller sub-sets (defined as a function of the redshift and the blazar class) are presented and discussed.

In recent years, the Fermi-LAT gamma-ray telescope has detected a population of over 160 gamma-ray pulsars, which has enabled the detailed study of electromagnetic radiation from pulsars at energies above 100 MeV. Non-thermal variable emission from radio to very-high energy gamma rays (VHE; >100 GeV) are the prime characteristics of gamma-ray binaries. Diffuse gamma rays are tracers of cosmic rays, providing information on their origin, interaction and diffusion through a galaxy. M 31 (the Andromeda Galaxy) is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way (d = 780 kpc) and is very well studied at all wavelengths. Thus it is a prime target for the study of diffuse gamma-ray emission. These objects enable the investigation of the main substructures of the AGN, in particular the core, the jet and its interaction with the intergalactic environment. The galaxy M82 has long been considered a promising target for VHE gamma-ray observations because of the compact starburst region in its core. Theoretical predictions have suggested it should be detectable by ground-based imaging Cherenkov telescopes like VERITAS and that a detection would have implications for the understanding of the origin of cosmic rays. M82 was observed with the VERITAS array during the 2007-2009 observing seasons. With an exposure of 137 hours, VERITAS was able to detect a gamma-ray signal at the 5 sigma level. In any given 24-hour period, the Fermi-LAT detects photons with energies of order 100 GeV not associated with any known VHE emitter. Fast radio burst (FRBs) are an exciting class of bright, extragalactic, millisecond radio transients. The recent development of large field-of-view (FOV) radio telescopes has caused a rapid rise in the number of identified single burst and repeating FRBs. This has allowed for the extensive multi-wavelength follow-up to search for the potential counterparts predicted by theoretical models. The radio source 3C 264, hosted by the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 3862, was observed with VERITAS between February 2017 and May 2019. These deep observations resulted in the discovery of very-high-energy (VHE; E $>100$ GeV) $γ$-ray emission from this active galaxy. The CTA pulse profile of the Crab pulsar is simulated with the specific goal of determining the accuracy of the position of the interpulse. Radio, infrared, X-ray, and GeV gamma-ray counterparts have been identified for HESS J1943+213; however, the classification of the source is still uncertain. The recent detection by the Fermi gamma-ray space telescope of high-energy gamma-rays from the radio galaxy NGC 1275 makes the observation of the very high energy (VHE: E > 100 GeV) part of its broadband spectrum particularly interesting, especially for the understanding of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with misaligned multi-structured jets. The radio galaxy NGC 1275 was recently observed by VERITAS at energies above 100 GeV for about 8 hours. No VHE gamma-ray emission was detected by VERITAS from NGC 1275. Very high energy (VHE, i.e. $\gtrsim 10$ GeV) photons from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), as high as 90 GeV in rest frame energy, have been detected by the $Fermi$ Large Area Telescope (LAT). This provides hope for a high statistics GRB detection by a ground-based instrument in the VHE domain. We conduct a search for periodic emission in the very high-energy gamma-ray band (VHE; E > 100 GeV) from a total of 13 pulsars in an archival VERITAS data set with a total exposure of over 450 hours. The set of pulsars includes many of the brightest young gamma-ray pulsars visible in the Northern Hemisphere. The data analysis resulted in non-detections of pulsed VHE gamma rays from each pulsar. Upper limits on a potential VHE gamma-ray flux are derived at the 95% confidence level above three energy thresholds using two methods. VERITAS is an array of four 12-m diameter imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes located in southern Arizona. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next generation instrument for the very high energy gamma-ray astrophysics domain. The H.E.S.S. Galactic plane scan has revealed a large population of Galactic very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) emitters. The majority of the galactic sources are extended and can typically be associated with pulsar wind nebulae (35%) and supernova remnants (21%), while some of the sources remain unidentified (31%). A much smaller fraction of point-like sources (5 in total, corresponding to 4%) are identified as gamma-ray binaries.
